Tweet Нравится Georgian Church reassures believers—Pope " s visit not to cross into ecumenism September 29, 2016      In response to some strong reactions among the clergy and faithful to the Pope " s upcoming visit to the country of Georgia, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, which will include meeting with His Holiness Patriarch Ilia II, the Patriarchate has released a statement aimed at reassuring those concerned. " We note that prayerful-sacramental communion between us and the Catholic church of Rome has been severed since medieval times and as long as there are dogmatic differences between us, according to Church law, Orthodox believers do not take part in their services, " the statement reads. The release notes that Pope Francis " visit to Georgia is by invitation of President Margvelashvili and Patriarcha Ilia and aimed at strengthening multilateral relations towards peacekeeping in the region. Referring to some excited public statements of clergy and laity, the statement calls upon all to remain calm, stating that " It is obvious that the Pope will serve Mass only for Catholics, which means it can’t be considered proselytism, as some people claim. " It should be noted that Pope John Paul II also visited Georgia in November 1999, meeting with Patriarcha Ilia, although no ecumenical prayers took place. The Georgian Church has taken a strict stance on matters of ecumenism, ceasing activity in the World Council of Churches in 1983 and abstaining from the recent pan-Orthodox gathering on Crete, offering critiques of its documents as well as the joint statement stemming from the recent Orthodox-Catholic meeting in Chieti, Italy. Metropolitan Amfilohije: “The spirit of neofascism is sowing seeds of discord” Niksic, May 16, 2014 Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral has stated that the revived spirit of neofascism is sowing seeds of discord, “trying to cause a quarrel between brothers in the Ukraine and Russia”.      The hierarch said these words during the solemn cross procession, dedicated to the feast-day of Holy Hierarch Basil of Ostrog, which gathered bishops and priests of the Serbian and Russian Orthodox Churches in Montenegro this year. President of the Serbian Republic Milorad Dodik, ambassadors of Russia and the Ukraine to Montenegro as well as representatives of the Office for Religious Affairs at the Serbian government also took part in the cross procession. The metropolitan recalled the statements of some European politicians, who expressed their open discontent with the fact that the present Russian government and president Vladimir Putin are defending Orthodox traditions and the Church. Remembering the statement of the NATO secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen that America and Europe had bombed Serbia and Montenegro, “defending Kosovo and Metodija from genocide”, the metropolitan stressed that their actions were not a defense against genocide, but rather its continuation. The hierarch has wondered who will answer for destruction of hundreds of churches, killing of people, crimes, and razing of houses. According to Metropolitan Amfilohije, this genocide found continuation in the recent events in Odessa, where innocent people died in extreme suffering. The hierarch has concluded that if this is truly the so-called path to attainment of human rights, freedom and democracy, then there is no democracy in it any more, and “demonocracy has started ruling the world”. The metropolitan has stressed that the Montenegrin authorities, joining the European Union in the sanctions against Russia, “are adding fuel to the fire in which people were burned alive in Odessa”. 19 мая 2014 г.    At the end of the Liturgy the supplicatory canon of the Mother of God is sung, and then the Great Cross Procession begins with the icon of “It is Truly Meet,” which is kept in the altar of the Koinotita church. The procession lasts for about five to six hours. The centuries-old rite of procession with the miracle-working icon makes strictly observed stops in a specific order. Thus, the icon visits Koutloumousiou, which is located near the Koinotita, and then the metochia of all the Athonite communities in the capital of the Holy Mountain, as well as certain sketes, such as that of St. Andrew.          Unfortunately, this year the Cross Procession ended earlier than usual due to torrential rains that swept across Mt. Athos, and the icon was not able to visit the metochia of Agios Pavlos, Hilandar, Xeropotamou, and the Russian St. Panteleimon monasteries. The rains also prevented the processions of the Koutloumousiou and Iveron monasteries. Translation by OrthoChristian.com Pravoslavie.ru 21 апреля 2017 г. Archive Vinnitsa people accord solemn welcome to newly appointed diocesan bishop, Archbishop Varsonofy 18 December 2018 year 19:09 On December 18, 2018, the clergy and parishioners of churches in the city of Vinnitsa, as well as the abbots and representatives of the three diocesan monasteries, gave a solemn welcome to the newly appointed ruling bishop of Vinnitsa, Archbishop Varsonofy.  The meeting took place in the square at the church of the Epiphany of the Vinnitsa Community of the Elevation of the Cross. Archbishop Varsonofy of Vinnitsa and Bar was accompanied by vicars of the Metropolis of Kiev, Archbishop Damian of Fastov and Bishop Gedeon of Makarov. The people welcomed Archbishop Varsonofy with church hymns and exclamations ‘Christ Is Risen!’ A representative of the city clergy presented His Eminence with a cross, with which the hierarch blessed the faithful. A thanksgiving was celebrated, after which Archbishop Damian read out the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Synod’s resolution of December 12, 2018 (Minutes No. 72) on the appointment of Archbishop Varsonofy as ruling bishop of the diocese of Vinnitsa. The choir and people sang ‘Many Years’ to His Eminence. His Eminence Varsonofy addressed his flock, thanking them for the warm welcome, common prayer and support. He also stressed that he was not going to interfere with the Vinnitsa Cathedral of the Holy Transfiguration, which has been occupied by Metropolitan Simeon (Shostatsky) who has diverted into the schism, but he will, he said, seek to solve legally the problem of returning the church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. ‘We are people of Christ, and we do not say in words that we love one another but we should testify to it by our whole life. Evil can be overcome only by love. And I call upon you all, dear fathers, brothers and sisters, to be aware in this hard time that it is only with the help of God that we will be able to rectify the situation so unpleasant for us’, the archbishop said, adding, ‘We will not capture anything by force, nor press him (Metropolitan Simeon) but we will ask and pray for him. Because the most important thing for us is to preserve the true faith. Truth and faith – how important they are for our salvation! Not the cathedral nor the wall is what we need but faith, prayer and love for each other’. The hierarch asked for people’s prayer and support ‘so that I could perform my ministry zealously, in purity and immaculacy’, and thanked the city clergy for their courage in defending the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. After the archbishop’s homily, the clergy of the Vinnitsa diocese were invited to a general assembly, report the  Pravoslavnaya zhizn  portal and the official site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
