A carved cross, Govan Old Church, Glasgow We can add that the healing powers of its water were praised as early as the Norman Conquest. It was even said that praying at this well could bring rain at times of drought! The well was subsequently forgotten and subsided due to the dunes, and unexpectedly rediscovered only in 1911. Now its water is clean again. For many years, Constantine was the patron saint of the parishes of Dunsterton and Milton Abbot in Devon, and the latter still has a parish Church of St. Constantine that has been traced back to 1155. The area called Welsh Bicknor in the English county of Herefordshire close to the Welsh border has a church in honor of St. Margaret, but the Welsh name of the parish is “Llangystennin Garth Brenni”. The parish church in the Welsh village Llangystennin (“enclosure” or “church of Constantine”) in Conwy is dedicated to St. Constantine, although it is not known whether its patron is St. Constantine of Cornwall or the Holy Emperor Constantine the Great. Holy fathers Piran and Constantine, pray to God for us! Dmitry Lapa 22 марта 2017 г.  According to tradition, the Archangel Michael appeared in a vision to Cornish fishermen in 495 on a tidal isle just to the south of Cornwall, and the site has been regarded as holy since then. It is called St. Michael’s Mount (similarly, there is a tidal isle of Mont St. Michel in Normandy wit h a Benedictine Abbey-fortress). An Orthodox monastery existed there probably from the eighth till the eleventh century, becoming the most visited pilgrimage destination in Cornwall and a popular spiritual center nationally. After the Norman Conquest, the monastery became a Catholic priory dependent on Mont St. Michel Abbey in France. This great monastic center was sadly suppressed by Henry V in 1414 together with all other “alien priories” in England. The magnificent twelfth-century former monastery church still dominates this island’s summit, and, along with its castle, attracts numerous believers and tourists. The site still retains its spirit of isolation and mystery. Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю:

O God-fearing and thrice-venerable Syrian Fathers, lift up your holy hands to the Heavenly King and pray that He grant peace to our nation, safety to all Christian people, and great mercy to all those who call upon His name! Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf LENT LENT. There are technically four “lents,” or fasting seasons, during the liturgical year of the Orthodox Church: the Great Lent consisting of “forty days” preceding Holy Week and Easter, the Apostles’ Fast preceding the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul (June 29th), two weeks preceding the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15th), and the forty days in preparation for the Nativity of Christ (December 25th). It is Great Lent, however, that enjoys both chronological and liturgical primacy, and was the model for the others. A fasting period of up to a week preceding the paschal vigil appears as early as the 3rd c. Believers, according to the Apostolic Tradition (q.v.), were expected to share in the catechumens’ preparation for their Baptism (q.v.) during the Easter Vigil. The 4th c. expansion of Christianity saw this period extended to essentially its present dimensions, as is evident in the account Egeria (q.v.) gives of Lent in late 4th c. Jerusalem. As presently observed, the Orthodox Lent includes six weeks of fasting, less the Saturday of Lazarus and Palm Sunday, which begin the Holy Week commemorating Christ’s suffering. For four Sundays prior to the fast, reckoned as beginning on a Monday, the themes that are to predominate during the forty days are brought to the believers’ attention through the reading of the Gospel lessons of the Pharisee and Publican (humility), Prodigal Son (repentance), the Last Judgment (righteous deeds and the memory of death), and forgiveness. Each of the lenten Sundays is also devoted to a particular theme. The first commemorates the final victory over iconoclasm (q.v.) in 843, the second remembers Gregory Palamas (q.v.), the champion of asceticism, the third the Holy Cross, the fourth Joh n Climacus (q.v.), and the fifth the great image of repentance, Mary of Egypt. Church services during this period reflect the themes of repentance (q.v.), godly sorrow, and entrance into the Church. They are longer, make greater use of Old Testament readings (reflecting also Lent’s origins as a preparation for Baptism), and in Russian employ melodies in the minor key and vestments of somber hue. Perhaps the characteristic service par excellence of Great Lent is the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. Since the Byzantine Church forbade the celebration of the Eucharist (q.v.) during the weekdays of the fast, communion was-and is-provided the faithful through an evening service, essentially Vespers, on Wednesdays and Fridays. The communion is taken from a eucharistic host consecrated the preceding Sunday, hence the “presanctified” in the service’s title. Venerable Ioseb of Khevi, Elder and Wonderworker (†1763) Memory 7 (20) October Little is known about the life of St. Ioseb of Khevi. The Church is certain only that he was a native of Khevi (in northern Georgia) and served as a priest in that village. In addition to being great warriors, the people of Khevi have throughout history been remarkably steadfast in the Christian Faith. The churches and monasteries in Khevi are extraordinary in both beauty and inaccessibility. They were deliberately built in mountainous places, as if reaching them should demand the greatest of zeal. The most important ornament and symbol of Khevi is the ice that perpetually caps the peak of Mt. Mqinvari (Kazbegi). On the slope of this mountain stands Trinity Monastery, where at one time St. Nino’s cross was preserved (it is presently kept in Tbilisi, in the northern section of the iconostasis at Sioni Cathedral). Located above Trinity Monastery, on the ice-covered, vertical cliff of Mt. Mqinvari, is a cave hermitage at 13,450 feet, known as the Bethlehem Cave. It is possible to reach this hermitage only by climbing chains let down from its height. According to the chronicle Life of Kartli, this cave has throughout history been used to store sacred objects and treasures of the Church. The historian Davit Batonishvili records that St. Ioseb was especially known for his love of holy objects, for keeping the strictest of fasts, and for his outstanding virtues. He climbed to the Bethlehem Hermitage and returned with a piece of the tent of the patriarch Abraham, which he presented to King Erekle. Having attained the heights of clairvoyance and miracle-working, St. Ioseb reposed peacefully in the year 1763. Thou art illumined by divine grace, O Holy Father Ioseb the Elder. Pray to Christ God on behalf of those who venerate thy holy name! Georgian tradition relates that both the tent of the Patriarch Abraham and the manger of Christ were kept in the Bethlehem Cave for many centuries.   Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze 8 ноября 2007 г. ... Road accident in the Khabarovsk region: a seriously injured priest helped rescue many passengers; 84-year-old survivor baptized Khabarovsk (a port in Eastern Russia near the Chinese border), August 7, 2015      Secretary of the Amur Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, Dean of the Cathedral of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Igumen Tikhon (Tyuryumin) was seriously injured in the road accident that occurred on the Khabarovsk-Komsomolsk motorway on August 5. After the accident, Fr. Tikhon was taken to the Clinical Hospital No. 1 of Khabarovsk. According to the doctors, his condition is serious and he is currently in the intensive care unit, reports the Pravostok.ru portal. According to eyewitnesses, at the scene of the accident Fr. Tikhon, with serious injuries (multiple rib fractures, hemathorax, a penetrating wound of the left eye, multiple contusions and abrasions on torso and extremities), nevertheless helped evacuate the injured passengers from the severely damaged buses. On August 7 the clergy of the Khabarovsk Diocese visited the crash survivors at Clinical Hospital No. 1 of Khabarovsk in order to perform holy sacraments. On that day, 84-year-old Maria Ivanovna in the traumatic surgery department was baptized by Hieromonk Innocent (Mitin). In spite of her poor condition (she could hardly sit up on her bed), Maria Ivanovna rejoiced at her Baptism and was grateful for the kind attention.      According to the woman, “a bearded man” helped her get out of the bus after that terrible accident – it was Fr. Tikhon (Tyutyurin) from the Amur Diocese. On that day a lady named Elena with her 6-year-old daughter Anastasia were given Holy Communion. Elena lost a close friend in that crash, while little Anastasia was not injured at all. “It was because I was wearing a cross,” said Anastasia, addressing her mother. “I will never take it off again. And you, please, always wear it too.” 10 августа 2015 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Serbia without Kosovo is like a corpse without soul and heart, Patriarch Irinej says/Православие.Ru Serbia without Kosovo is like a corpse without soul and heart, Patriarch Irinej says Hieromonk Ignaty (Shestakov) Gracanica, Kosovo, June 29, 2015 On June 28 Serbs all over the world commemorated the Battle of Kosovo (1389) – Vidovdan. On this day solemn services, processions of the cross, prayers for repose of souls of the heroes who gave their lives for the faith and freedom are held in Serbia and abroad.      This year at Gracanica Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Kosovo His Holiness Patriarch Irinej celebrated a Divine Liturgy with several Serbian hierarch concelebrating. After the service the primate addressed himself to the faithful and noted that on that day all Serbs were spiritually with Kosovo. “Today the eyes, thoughts, and feelings of all Serbs – in our motherland and all over the world – are spiritually here, together with us. There is no greater sacrifice than to lay down one’s life and sacrifice oneself; it was this sacrifice that the Holy Prince Lazar made and with him – the numerous army of Kosovan heroes who came together with him to the Battle of Kosovo (“the Kosovo Polje”), who shed there their blood and filled this holy soil with it,” the patriarch accentuated. Speaking of the special significance of Kosovo and Metodija (Metohija) for all Serbs, the Patriarch stressed that they (Serbs) should make every effort so that Kosovo could remain Serbian. “What is Serbia without Kosovo and Metodija? It is a corpse without a soul and heart. Holy Serbia can exist only together with Kosovo and Metodija,” Patriarch Irinej emphasized. Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, Bishops Joanikije of Budimlje- Niksic, Teodosije of Raska-Prizren, Jovan of Slavonia, Atanasije of Zahumlje and Herzegovina (retired) as well as an assembly of clergy concelebrated with the Patriarch at the Divine Liturgy at Gracanica. New Orthodox church consecrated in New York New York City, October 6, 2014      On Saturday, October 4, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York (the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) consecrated the new Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in New York (Brooklyn, Sheepshead Bay). It can be said that for today this is one of the largest Orthodox churches in New York City and is inferior only to the St. Nicholas Cathedral on Manhattan (belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate) in respect of capacity and adornments. Most likely, only the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia on 18th Avenue (the first of four Orthodox churches now active in this NY borough) can rival the newly consecrated church.      The new Church of St. John the Baptist now occupies the building of a former Methodist church; only a small, splendid dome and a distinctive cross above the entrance indicate that this is an Orthodox church. One can understand the joy of the church Rector Archpriest Alexander Belya, the parish council and all the parishioners, who over several years had to move from one rented premise of Brooklyn to another. Within the shortest possible space of time the church was repaired by the Kadar Elite Construction company, led by Michael Kadar. Benefactors and volunteers from among the parishioners actively helped in arranging the church. On Friday evening trowel men were still working here, and on Saturday morning the church was already receiving its parishioners and clergymen from neighboring communities, arriving to the celebration.      Clergy of the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God “Of the Sign”, of the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, the Church of the Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “The Inexhaustible Cup” as well as priests and deacons of other parishes of the diocese concelebrated with Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York at the Divine Liturgy and the church consecration. After the service the constructioin company director Michael Kadar and the churchwarden of the St. John the Baptist’s Church John (Ivan) Belya were presented with the highest award of the ROCOR—the Synodal Order of the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, 3rd Class. The active volunteer builders received diocesan diplomas. Pravoslavie.ru 6 октября 2014 г. Over half the Palestinians killed have been attackers in a spree of lone-wolf assaults, mainly with knives and mostly carried out by frustrated youths. Around a third of all incidents have occurred in and around Hebron, and the Ibrahimi Mosque/Cave of the Patriarchs site has seen multiple attacks. In response, Israeli forces have periodically stepped up their restrictions on movement, with night-time raids relatively common. “We are scared,” said Larisa Loukianova, a Russian Orthodox who married a Palestinian Muslim and moved to Hebron 25 years ago, in front of her family Christmas tree a few minutes from the church. Unlike other churches in the West Bank, which are mostly attended by Palestinian Christians and have often overtly criticised Israel’s occupation of the territory, Eliseev takes an apolitical line. Speaking before Christmas, he admitted celebrations would be smaller this year “because of the situation”. “But should we (abandon) Christmas? That is wrong. But also to celebrate in a big way would be wrong,” he says. “You need a middle way, like a Christmas in a war.” They needn’t have worried. On the night of the mass, six priests prepared the church for their guests. Three turned up. The Express Tribune 17 января 2016 г. Not far is a small forest which locals have called “Russian” for over 200 years. On its edge is a small hillock. On a picturesque parcel on this hill is a granite staircase with a stone over two meters high. An Orthodox cross is carved out of it with inscriptions in Russian and German: “To the Miracle Giants of Suvorov.”  Two hundred ten years ago, Russia’s General Alexander Suvorov, along with several thousand of his soldiers fighting against Napoleon, performed a legendary trek across the Alps. Not all of these heroes returned to their homeland: the injured and exhausted soldiers of Suvorov’s army were left to the care of a local monastery in Weingarten. Over 2,000 Russian soldiers were interred in German soil near the town. The oldest Russian cemetery in Germany, “Russenfriedhof” im Wald/”Russenholzle”is at Wolfeggerstrasse, 88250 Weingarten. The organizer of the commemoration of the Russian soldiers of Suvorov is Protodeacon Georg Kobro. From the recollections of a local German, Johann Baptist Pflug, kept in the local town hall’s chronicles: “Russians had a great deal of respect for their dead… For each soldier they crafted a coffin from well-finished planks. A priest would sprinkle holy water on the grave. The dead were carried by their companions to the cemetery by hand, a half-hour-long journey. They filled the graves with their hands, watching that stones did not fall on the coffins, only soft clumps of earth, so that ‘light’ would be the foreign soil covering their graves. Leveling out the grave mound, the covered them with large stones. Over each grave they would erect a well-made cross…” The graves themselves have long vanished, the “Russian forest” having taken their place.
