Tweet Нравится Venerable Fathers Mikael and Arsen the Georgians (9th century) Memory 3 (16) May Sts. Mikael and Arsen the Georgians. Sts. Mikael and Arsen the Georgians. The biographies of Sts. Mikael and Arsen the Georgians have unfortunately not been preserved. It is known that they were contemporaries of Patriarch Sergius of Jerusalem (843–859). The following entry is recorded in the synodicon of Jerusalem’s Holy Cross Monastery: “Our Holy Fathers Mikael and Arsen, founders of Olympus.” The record indicates that Sts. Arsen and Mikael established Georgian monasticism on Mt. Olympus. According to Paul Ingorokva, a scholar of the Georgian Middle Ages, Arsen was probably a disciple of St. Grigol of Khandzta. Ingorokva calls Arsen “a handsome gentleman, a kind monk full of wisdom, the son of a great nobleman, and a relative of St. Eprem, bishop of Atsquri.” It is believed that at some point Arsen moved from Khandzta Monastery to Palestine and labored there with a certain Macarius of Leteti. Afterward, St. Arsen founded a Georgian monastery on Mt. Olympus in Asia Minor. Twenty years later, Venerable Ilarion the Georgian arrived on Mt. Olympus and found three Georgian monks who were almost certainly disciples of Mikael and Arsen. O Holy Fathers Mikael and Arsen, most radiant stars, bestow upon us the grace of your prayers and enlighten the faithful of our nation and the world! The monasteries of Olympus came to include the monastic communities on the plain of Prousa. The number of monasteries in the region is numbered at around fifty, their apogee occurring between the 8th and 10th centuries, when Olympus occupied the first place in the list of holy mountains. Monasteries in the region included Atroa, Chenolakkos, Medikion, and Pelekete.

Valaam Monastery Celebrates Twenty-seventh Anniversary of Revival of Monastic Life      On December 13, 2016, the feast-day of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called, the Stavropegic Valaam Monastery of the Transfiguration celebrated the twenty-seventh anniversary of the rebirth of monastic life on Valaam. In 1989, the first six monks arrived to restore Valaam Monastery. These were Hieromonks Barsanuphius (Kapralov), Gerontius (Fedorenko), Photius (Begal), Hierodeacon Seraphim (Gordeyev), and novices Leonid Makarov and Vadim Erlikh. With the coming of the first monks, spiritual life began anew on the island, and services were resumed at the Church of Venerable Sergius and Herman of Valaam, the Wonder-workers.      “More than a quarter-century—that is a whole generation,” noted Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk, Abbot of Valaam Monastery. “Now I am happy to see the same pilgrims who visited the monastery nearly thirty years ago and were baptized and entered into the Orthodox Church. I see their children too: now they are adults and many of them have their own families. And now we are baptizing their children. This really gladdens us! Today the second generation of Christian families who found the true faith owing to Valaam Monastery is growing up.      “For centuries, the brethren of Valaam Monastery has preserved a tradition according to which the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called stopped here, on Valaam, during his travels through the vast expanse of the future Holy Rus’. In memory of this monastery’s tradition, the great builder of Valaam Monastery, Abbot Damascene, in the mid-nineteenth century built a chapel in honor of Apostle Andrew the First-Called and a memorial cross here. Later, when this site was visited by the prominent Russian merchant and benefactor Innocent (later Schema-Monk Innocent) Mikhailovich Sibiryakov (1860-1901) shortly before his move to the St. Andrew’s Skete on Holy Mount Athos, his heart was filled with the desire to build a Church in honor of Apostle Andrew the First-Called. Thanks to his contribution a fine church was constructed here.      “Valaam was predestined by God to be a place of solitary monastic prayer, a place of ascetic labors—and we should always keep this in mind. We mustn’t grow slack but endure all the temporary hardships and temptations, all the sorrows which are inevitable on the monastic path for the sake of the promise of Christ, Who said, H e that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved (Mt. 24:13) and Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven (Mt. 5:12).” Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю: Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

The best example of such an understanding, and the presentation of such an understanding of the Old Testament, is the famous sermon of the holy First Martyr Stephan, related in the 7 th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. Those who are interested in the topic mentioned here, should compare the conception of the Old Testament in the presentation of the Apostle Stephan and the same conception in the presentation of Prof. Kartashev. They will be easily convinced of their contrasts and will be able to judge for themselves, which of these conceptions is more logical, successive, has more historical understanding and artistic intuition. The true church understanding of this question is still absolutely identical to the understanding of it by the Apostle Stephan in the, one might say, first minutes of the Christian Church – Its unified character and catholicity, as it was defined by the great teacher of the Church St. Vicente Lerinsky: «What the whole Church always and everywhere believes and believed is unified-catholic.» Because the Church and Church truth, necessary for the eternal salvation of the soul, cannot depend on temporary historical and geographical factors. The Church considers only that theology, which has roots in eternity, to be Its own. Then it does not ask for any scientific diplomas from a theologian, but Itself confers them on Galilean fisherman John the Theologian and even on the malefactor on the cross: «for while the one was led down to hades by the heaviness of his blaspheming, the other was lightened of his sins, unto the knowledge of things divine.» The Church will never accept any other deep thinking as Its own and does not call it by the holy and elevated name of Theology, recognizing everything that does not belong to It – as mundane foolish wisdom, no matter what the external world calls it. Protestantism sank to the disgrace of «theologians,» like Prof. B. Bauer, «Pastor» Drews and others, who rejected the reality of Christ’s existence. Is it possible that scholarly «Orthodox theology» will come to such disgrace as well? Читать далее Источник: Translated from Russian by Tatiana Pavlova. Ukrainian officials exerting pressure on priests of the canonical Church Kiev, October 29, 2014 The official website of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) has published the statement of the External Church Relations Department of UOC MP, made in connection with an attempt of the state authority in the Kirovohrad region to force the rector of the parish of Exaltation of Holy Cross to transfer to the uncanonical “Kyiv Patriarchate”.      The full text of the statement is as follows: In connection with the attempted interference of the state authority bodies of the Golovanevsk (Holovanivsk) district of the Kirovohrad region in the activities of the local parishes of UOC MP with the purpose of the forced change of their confessional status, the UOC External Church Relations Department reports the following: On October 20, 2014, Rector of the parish of Exaltation of Holy Cross in Peregonovka village of Golovanevsk district of the Kirovohrad region Archpriest Svyatoslav Levandovsky was summoned to the Peregonovka village council, where deputy head of the district administration Vladimir Vladimirovich Kozak compelled him to transfer his parish from UOC MP to the so-called “Kyiv Patriarchate”, unrecognized throughout the universal Orthodox world. The government official exerted psychological pressure on Archpriest Svyatoslav Levandovsky and threatened him that in case of refusal to transfer to the “Kyiv Patriarchate” the clergyman would be forcibly driven away from the church and “left without his job and salary”. The UOC MP External Church Relations Department is authorized to state that such actions are a crude violation of the international and national legislation about freedom of conscience (of worship). Furthermore, the above-mentioned actions of a government official is a sheer abuse of his power. The mentioned fact also reveal’s the neglect of the commission of the Ukrainian prime minister Arseny Yatsenyuk to the executive state authority bodies of October 13, on “prevention of aggravation of interreligious relations, including seizure of buildings for public worship.” Once again we would like to stress that such gross interference by the civil authorities in UOC MP affairs is absolutely inadmissible. We state that information on this incident as well as other similar incidents will be reported to the competent Ukrainian bodies and international agencies that monitor cases of human rights violations, and the right to freedom of conscience and freedom of religion is an integral part of human rights. 1 ноября 2014 г.
