Scenes from Solovki The Solovki Islands clustered within the White Sea not far from the Artic Circle have been home to monastic prayer since 1429, when monks Herman and Savvatius arrived from the St. Cyril of White Lake Monastery to live the anchoretic life. Solovki Monastery was soon founded in 1436 by Monk Zosima, who became its first abbot. Since then the islands of Solovki have played a vast historic role in Russian national life. In honor of these three saints of Solovki whom we celebrate today, we are revisiting selections from an amazing photo exhibit displayed i n November of 2010 in the Christ the Savior Cathedral: " Solovki: Golgotha and Resurrection " , dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the renewal of monastic life at Solovki. The exhibition showed the history of Solovki Monastery from its height spanning the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries to the time of its discretion in the twentieth century, when it was turned into a concentration camp. Here are photos by a participant in the exhibit, Sergei Veretennikov, showing the northern splendor of Solovki. The workers of evil fought back but did not conquer. There can be no question that the return of angelic habits to Solovki will give rest to the souls tortured there by the godless: joy in place of sorrow. Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Orthodox Christians celebrated the Nativity of Christ in the Holy Land Jerusalem, January 8, 2015      The festal service begins with the Christmas Eve, or “Sochelnik”, which is celebrated on January 6, reports the website of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. At the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Mission in Jerusalem the reading of the Great, or Royal Hours, followed by the Vespers with the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great began at 6 AM. Performing of an earlier Christmas Eve service enables the Mission representatives to take part in the celebrations in Bethlehem, where by tradition the feast of the Birth of Christ is met with a particular solemnity. On this day a special “procession” is held to the site of the Lord’s Birth which symbolizes the Magi, or the Wise Men, who followed the star, according to the Gospel.      The Patriarch of Jerusalem, accompanied by the hierarchs, in a procession of automobiles sets out from the Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate of the old city walls, stopping on the way at the Monastery of Holy Prophet Elias and meeting with representatives of the Palestinian administration and the public.      The solemn procession and the meeting of the Patriarch that symbolizes the meeting with the Infant Christ took place in the famous Manger Square opposite the Church of the Nativity of Christ in central Bethlehem.      As usual, on this day scouts from Orthodox Arab schools of Bethlehem proceeded one after another, “armed” with various musical instruments. An assembly of clergy went out of the church and solemnly received Patriarch Theophilos III; among them were representatives of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem: its head Igumen Theophan and Igumen Leonty.      After that the procession walked to the Basilica of the Nativity of Christ where the Christmas Eve services began. The midnight service started with the Matins which was finished by His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos in the Grotto of Nativity. This was followed by a procession of the cross inside the church and the Divine Liturgy in the catholicon of the Church of the Nativity of Christ which was headed by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. The Russian Ecclesiastical Mission was represented by Igumen Leonty. The clerics of the Russian Orthodox Church who are currently on their pilgrimage to the Holy Land participated in the midnight service as well.      At the same time the Liturgy was celebrated in the Cave of Nativity, headed by Metropolitan Timothy of Vostra (the Patriarchate of Jerusalem). The midnight Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral was served by Igumen Theophan with the Mission’s clergy concelebrating. 13 января 2015 г. Later on, when the catechumenate was dissolved and baptism of children was generalied, the blessing of the water was preserved, being related to the feast, but with a different significance. As Archbishop Simeon of Thessaloniki points out, on Epiphany day not only is renewal in the baptism of the Lord accomplished, but also the grace of the baptism we all received. The origin of the service of the Great Blessing of Waters is found in Jerusalem, where the very vivid remembrance of the baptism of the Savior by the Forerunner, in the waters of the Jordan River was preserved; hence it spread to Antioch, then to Constantinople and to Asia Minor. This is why the present service of the Great Blessing of Water is ascribed, according to tradition, entirely to Saint Sophrony, patriarch of Jerusalem (+638), to whom the January Menaion ascribes the troparia sung at the beginning of the celebration, while the Euchologion ascribes him a prayer for the blessing of water.      Basilica News Agency 18 января 2016 г. The lofty guests were greeted by the Secretary of the Kazakhstan Metropoliate, Mr ON Ovchinnikov, Protopriest Valery Zakharov, the Senior Priest of the Cathedral and Dean of the Almaty Churches, and other clergymen and parishioners of the Cathedral. The visitors venerated the holy relics of the cathedral: the honorable relics of St Nicholas the Miracle-worker of Myra, Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon and Holy Great Martyr Barbara. A prayer and laudation were sung before the relics of Holy Martyr Metropolitan Nicholas of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan and all the New Martyrs and Confessors of Kazakhstan. The archpastors and clergymen viewed the water-blessing chapel of St John the Baptist and Forerunner, on the cathedral’s property. Eternal Memory was sung to all “who in the years of brutal persecutions by the godless were tortured and killed”—to all the New Martyrs and Confessors of Kazakhstan—at a cross and rock in the plaza of the grounds. His Eminence Metropolitan Alexander showed the guests a parish school hosted by St Nicholas Cathedral, which was a gift to the Orthodox children and youth of Almaty by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr NA Nazarbaev. The hierarchs were given a tour of the auditorium, library, administrative offices, and spoke to the teachers and students. His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Borjomi and Bakurian and His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany and Great Britain made inscriptions in the guest book in memory of their visit. After the visit to St Nicholas Cathedral, the delegates traveled to the main cemetery of Almaty, where a memorial litany was performed for Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan. That afternoon, the delegates accompanying the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God to Kazakhstan visited Iveron-St Seraphim Convent in Almaty. They prayed at the monastery’s St Sophia Church and visited St Matrona of Moscow Church, where daily monastic services are held and the psalter is read daily, where they met with Abbess Liubov (Yakushkina). Metropolitan Alexander and the other archpastors then laid the foundation for a chapel dedicated to St Seraphim of Sarov. That evening, a reception was given at the premises of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Almaty, hosted by the Head of the Metropoliate District of Kazakhstan in honor of the delegation which brought the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God to Kazakhstan. The shrine had been brought to Swiss parishes with a blessing of Archbishop Kirill of San Francisco and Western America and Bishop Irenaeus of Richmond and Western Europe, on the occasion of the 25 th  anniversary of the glorification of the saint. After the Prayer of Fervent Supplication, Metropolitan Hilarion lifted up a prayer for peace in Ukraine. In his sermon after the service, His Eminence Hilarion conveyed to the congregation a blessing from His Holiness Kirill, Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia. Then he spoke about the Gospel’s story about the healing of a man born blind, stressing that the Lord healed the blind man not only physically but also spiritually, bringing him to faith in Christ not just as man but as God Incarnate. “Every Gospel’s story speaks of Jesus Christ as God”, His Eminence said, “And He continues to live in our midst, with us and in us, for when we partake of the Holy Communion, the Lord Jesus Christ comes to dwell in us entering into our human essence”. Speaking about the difference between Christianity and other religions, he said that the difference between the life of a Christian and that of a non-believer is the same as the life of a blind one and a sighted one. “Externally, everything in our life as Christians seems to be similar to the life of other people, but inwardly our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ makes us aware of the meaning of our life and all that happens in it”. His Eminence concluded his sermon with the traditional exclamation “Christ is Risen!” Then Bishop Alexander of Vevey greeted Metropolitan Hilarion and presented him with an Icon of All Saints in memory of the common prayer and a leaflet about the restoration of the church of the Elevation of the Cross. Patriarch Irinej said that the celebration of 17 centuries since the adoption of the Edict of Milan is an opportunity for Orthodox nations to come closer to each other, and also to extend their “brotherly hand to other close churches and religions.” Patriarch Kirill said that the Milan Edict celebrations in Serbia are also an opportunity to analyze all issues of importance to the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches. Patriarch Kirill said that the Edict of Milan defines the relationship between the church and state, which is the Christian foundation for the development of European civilization, and pointed to the need to constantly remind everyone about it when they try to deny the importance of the Edict of Milan. The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest Orthodox church in the world and an Old Calendarist just like the Serbian Orthodox Church. Tanjug.rs 5 октября 2013 г. ... Church representative calls upon the Ukrainian people to resist the diktat of extremists Moscow, March 26, 2015 The citizens of the Ukraine, both believers and non-believers, should find strength to resist the diktat of a bunch of extremists who are imposing their will on the people around, said chairman of the Synodal Information Department of the Russian Orthodox Church Vladimir Legoida to RIA-Novosti, commenting on the prohibition of the authorities of the Ukrainian city of Sumy to hold an annual procession of the cross on the feast of the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God (March 14/27).      As became known earlier, the Sumy authorities had prohibited the faithful from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC MP) to arrange the large-scale cross procession on the feast of this icon, referring to it as to “a political event”. One of the reasons for the ban was the fact that the Theodorovskaya Icon of Holy Theotokos is closely linked to the Russian Empire, as it is considered to be one of the greatest shrines of the House of Romanov. This very fact, in the politicians’ view, may become excuse for provocations. “The decision of the Sumy authorities – prohibition to hold a traditional cross procession – can only be interpreted as intimidation. Humanly speaking, fear of the city executive committee members to support arranging the cross procession can be understood, since armed extremists lie behind the proposal to ban the event. Naturally, the authorities fear for themselves and for their relatives who may fall victims of opponents of their favorable decision. But, nevertheless, this incident is evidence of a paralysis of the power,” the Russian Orthodox Church representative stressed. He has reminded that the ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate “has nothing to do with any politics”. “Apparently, the consistent peace-making efforts of the Church make It an easy target for those who are not used to meet with a fitting rebuff and are content with attacks on the defenseless,” said the chairman of the Synodal Information Department in conclusion. 27 марта 2015 г.
