Every year on Palm Sunday, thousands of people gather in the village of Petrokerasa in Greece to welcome the Holy Cross of the Monastery of Xeropotamou. The welcoming ceremony is a momentous event organised with ecclesiastical grandeur and spirituality. The journey, welcoming ceremony and hosting of the True Cross of the Holy Monastery of Xeropotamou occurs every year without fail to this village from the year 1768 and probably even longer every Palm Sunday.    This ancient tradition, to which the fathers of The Holy Monastery keep true, is done in the same manner and tradition which has been handed down and historically documented since 1768. This is due to a great miracle that occurred in the eighteenth century in this village. The village was plagued by a deadly disease which was affecting all of the inhabitants. The Holy Monastery of Xeropotamou was contacted by the villagers in order to bring the True Cross to the village in order to bless it. The fathers, immediately after receiving word, and with great honours and a grand procession, brought the piece of the True Cross to the village and upon Its procession around the village, the village was saved and the disease that plagued its inhabitants was eradicated in miraculous circumstances due to the presence of the True Cross.    In memory of this great miracle, the True Cross of the Holy Monastery of Xeropotamou Mount Athos is taken to the same village every year to be venerated by the villagers and faithful. There " s no describing the shock and sense of violation when an object pierces your body " s integrity. But as I sat in the ER at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, I remember thinking that if this is what it felt like to be pierced by a tiny nail, how must it feel to have large ones pounded through your wrists and feet. It made me say to myself, " Lord, thank you for doing that, for me. " The Cross became personal like never before, from a little taste of pain. God doesn " t send pain. He doesn " t afflict us with kidney stones, lacerations, infections or nails through the feet. But as Joseph discovered in Egypt, what his brethren meant for evil (what comes our way from sin, the devil and death), God can use for good. May we find some blessing in pain, and bear this cross as something that unites us to each other and to Christ. Fr. Barnabas Powell 27 сентября 2017 г. " - Troparion to St. Hilarion of Verey On Tuesday the 27th and Wednesday the 28th of December, the historic first celebration in the English language of the service to St. Hilarion (Troitsky), Archbishop of Verey, was held at Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV. The divine services were led by His Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop George of Mayfield, co-served by monastery dean Hieromonk Alexander (Frizzell), Priest Ilia Marzev (dean of St. Sergius Cathedral in Cleveland, OH), and monastery clergy: Hieromonks Andrew (O’Leary) and Nektarios (Merry), and Hierodeacon Sergius (Wilson). The monks of Holy Cross Monastery share a special connection with St. Hilarion, many of whose writings have been translated into English and are extremely helpful for converts because they deal with issues that pertain to Catholics and Protestants. " Many of the questions that we began to ask when we were looking for the historic Christian Church are addressed in St. Hilarion’s writings, for instance, the place of Holy Scripture in Christian history and Christian Tradition, " said monastery dean Hieromonk Alexander (Frizzell). " I recall having read ‘Holy Scripture in the Church’ by St. Hilarion, and in this wonderful essay he places the Bible in context as the possession, the property, of the Orthodox Church, not as something separate from the Church. " St. Hilarion is also dear to the monks of Holy Cross Monastery, because as one of the new hieromartyrs of Russia, he served Christ under circumstances that were far from normal. Before the revolution, many bishops such as St. Hilarion had all of the material things that they needed, thanks to the ruling Orthodox monarchy. A large cathedral, many parishioners, several staff members and government support were some of things that made life easier for Russian Orthodox bishops during the rule of the Tsar. The tribulations that overcame Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution removed all of these external supports for any bishop or clergymen, who now found himself living in a completely foreign world.

Two New Mexico Churches Rocked by Explosions Sunday Morning August 3, 2015 Back-to-back explosions rattled two churches in a New Mexico town Sunday morning, police said. No one was injured in either explosion, and damage to each church was " relatively minor, " according to a statement from the Las Cruces Police Department. Aaliyah Doninguez, 11, holds a sign advising parishioners in Las Cruces, New Mexico, that Mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church mass was canceled on Sunday. Robin Zielinski/AP A mailbox was blasted at Calvary Baptist Church in Las Cruces, about 50 miles from the Mexico border, around 8 a.m. local time, the police statement said. Parishioners were gathered inside the church at the time of the explosion, but services had not yet begun, the statement said. Less than half-hour later, police were called to Holy Cross Catholic Church, about three miles away, where an explosive device had gone off in a trash can near the entrance of the church, according to police. The service at Holy Cross had started, and worshippers were evacuated, police said. The churches remained closed Sunday afternoon while multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the nearly-simultaneous blasts, according to police. Holy Cross Catholic Church said activities at their adjoining school would be canceled Monday morning. " Please pray for our community, " said a statement from the church. " Just the fact that they were at churches the same day a half an hour apart or so, that leads us to believe it could be something related, " police spokesman Dan Trujillo told the Las Cruces News . Trujillo said police have advised other churches in the area " to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. " While waiting in a staging area, Holy Cross Catholic Church Pastor John Anderson tries to get in touch with other local churches to warn them of the two explosions that occurred on Sunday.
