For him, there wasn’t the slightest separation between the service of a sovereign and the fulfillment of his personal Christian duty. To the end of time, and especially in the latter times, the Church will be tempted by the devil, as Christ was in Gethsemane and on Golgotha: “Come down from the Cross!” “Depart just a little from the demands of man’s greatness, about which Your Gospels speak, become more accessible to all, and we will believe in You. There are situations when it is necessary to do this. Come down from the Cross, and the Church’s affairs will go better.” The main spiritual significance of today’s events—the conclusion drawn from centuries infected by the spirit of Machiavelli and especially the twentieth century—are the ever more successful efforts of the enemy directed at making our “salt lose its flavor”. Just as before the [Bolshevik] Revolution, so also now, the greatest danger consists in “outward appearances”. Many believe in God, in His Providence, many strive to restore an Orthodox monarchy, but in their hearts they rely on earthly power: on “horses and chariots” (Ps. 18:8). They say, let the cross be as a beautiful symbol… Meanwhile we will set up our own earthly kingdom, according to our earthly understanding. But the martyric blood of the holy Tsar rebukes the apostates now, just as it did then. Sermon on the Feast of the Three Hierarchs Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) Sermon on the Feast of the Three Hierarchs Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) There is much in common among the three hierarchs and great ecumenical teachers whom we commemorate today: Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. All three lived in a time when the Christian Church, after almost three centuries of persecution, received freedom and was flourishing throughout the Byzantine ‘oikoumene’. All the three were involved in contesting contemporary heresies. All the three combined serving the Church in episcopal rank with literary activity, and it is precisely their literary legacy which secured for them the paramount place that they occupy in Christian Tradition. All the three were victims of ecclesiastical intrigues. Their posthumous glory, however, exceeded any expectations their contemporaries might have had, and their significance for the entire Christian Church in East and West cannot be overestimated. Most Christians, including Protestants, claim to believe the Nicene Creed, and the Nicene Creed is unambiguous on this point, and its statement that Christ " Kingdom shall have no end " is taken straight from Scripture. Some early fathers, who did not have the benefit of the instruction of the Second Ecumenical Council, have some excuse for being mistaken on this point; but now we have no such excuse. The problem with premillennialism is that it tended to feed into other heresies, such as Montanism, which believed that Montanus was the Holy Spirit incarnate, and which believed that the Kingdom of God was soon to come to be established in Phrygia. We have seen similar heresies with millenialist eschatology in more recent times, with the Jehovah " s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists , Mormonism , the Jim Jones Cult, and Branch Davidians. Given the excesses this view has tended to produce, the Church felt it necessary to clearly define the matter. Fr. John Whiteford " s News, Comments, & Reflections Fr. Restoration of Holy Sepulchre completed Moscow, March 21, 2017 Photo: The Times of Israel      The restoration work on the edicule over the Lord’s tomb has been completed according to the previously announced schedule. Earlier, His Holiness Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem stated that the tomb would open to pilgrims sometime between March 22 and 25. The iron cage built around the Holy Sepulchre in 1947 by British authorities has been removed, as the walls of the edicule have been reinforced to be self-sustaining, reports The Times of Israel . The black soot on the stone façade from years of pilgrims’ candles was also cleaned as part of the first restoration work in 200 years. “If this intervention hadn’t happened now, there is a very great risk that there could have been a collapse,” Bonnie Burnham of the World Monuments Fund, which gave the initial million for the million project, said Monday. “This is a complete transformation of the monument.” King Abdullah II of Jordan and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also donated about 150,000 euros each. The shrine, standing in the middle of the ancient church, was in bad condition after years of water, humidity, and candle smoke. The National Technical University of Athens’ restoration team removed the stone slabs from the edicule’s façade, and cleaned and replaced them, reinforcing the walls with tubes of grout and titanium bolts. Restorers also cut a small window through the edicule’s marble walls for pilgrims to see into the tomb itself, where Christ was laid after His Crucifixion and death on Holy Friday. While historians believed the original remnants of the tomb had been destroyed over the centuries, with the original church being destroyed in 1099 by order of the Fatimid caliph of Egypt, researchers in fact found a limestone slab with a cross carved into it that dated to the fourth century, to the time when Sts. Constantine and Helen had the original Holy Sepulchre Church built. Further restorations are planned to consolidate the underground drainage and sewage pipes and to stabilize the shrine’s foundation. The restoration team’s worksite is being dismantled in preparation for a ceremony on Wednesday to mark the end of the restorations to be led by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic confession. 21 марта 2017 г. Russian Palestine is a marvelous spiritual and historical phenomenon, headed by the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem founded in 1847. Through the care, energy, and labors of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian government in the latter half of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, a whole cluster of holy sites connected with significant events in sacred history where acquired for Russian pilgrims, many churches, pilgrimage guesthouses, and metochia were built, and several monasteries were founded. Russian Palestine represents vast enlightenment, scholarly research, and charitable activity. Its golden age could be considered those thirty years (1865–1894) when the head of the Russian spiritual mission was Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin). Despite its perennial lack of money, many hardships and obstacles, he was able to acquire a large amount of land, the value of which cannot be measured in the material terms: a parcel in Hebron with the Oak of Mamre, under which the patriarch Abraham received the three mysterious Visitors; a parcel on the Mount of Olives, not far from the site of the Lord’s ascension; land in the settlement of Ein-Karem—the place where the Most Holy Theotokos and righteous Elizabeth met; parcels in biblical Jericho and in Haifa (Joppa) with the tomb of righteous Tabitha, who was resurrected by the holy apostle Peter, and others. Thanks to the scholarly work of Archimandrite Antonin in ecclesiastical archeology, near the church of the Lord’s Sepulcher was discovered the threshold to the Judgment gates, through which our Savior’s way of the cross passed, and an ancient necropolis in Haifa. The Russian presence in the Holy Land became possible also thanks to the charity of Orthodox Russian people—from 1886 on, every year on the feast of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, Palm Sunday, donations for the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem were collected in every diocese and church in Russia. Russian Palestine was created and supported by the whole world, however it suffered great losses, and became forgotten and desolate after the Bolshevik revolution. That in our days the monasteries, metochia, and pilgrimage guesthouses of the Russian Mission in the Holy Land are again able to receive the thousands of pilgrims who come every year is the result of peoples’ enormous labor, faith, hope, and sacrificial love.   23 октября 2017 г. скрыть способы оплаты скрыть способы оплаты Комментарии Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю: Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку
