Feast of the Deposition of Holy Cincture of the Mother of God solemnly celebrated at Vatopedi Monastery Holy Mount Athos, September 15, 2014      The feast of Deposition (Placing) of the Holy Girdle (Cincture) of the Mother of God (September 13) has been celebrated on Mt. Athos with Byzantine solemnity. Hours-long services have been celebrated in all Athonite monasteries, reports AgionOros.ru .      A night service was performed at the Vatopedi Monastery, after which blessing of waters was performed and a procession of the cross around the monastery held. Metropolitan Gabriel of Leontopolis headed the Divine Liturgy. Archbishop Veniamin of Barisaw (Belarus), Archbishop Gurius of Navahrudak and Lida (Belarus), Abbot of Vatopedi Monastery Archimandrite Ephraim, Abbot Christophoros of Grigoriou Monastery as well as a large number of hieromonks concelebrated with him.      Hundreds of pilgrims from Greece, Russia, Belarus and many other countries were present at the service. They had an opportunity to venerate the Holy Cincture of All-Holy Theotokos, kept at Vatopedi Monastery. Source: Romfea.gr .         According to the Church tradition, the Mother of God entrusted Her Garments to Holy Apostle Thomas. They were kept on the Holy Land until the 4th century. Under the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius (395-408), the relic was solemnly translated to Constantinople, and on September 13 (August 31 according to the old calendar) placed at the Church of Blachernae. After numerous miracles had occurred from this relic the event of Placing (of the Girdle of Holy Theotokos) became a universal Christian feast.      After the invasion of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in the mid-15th century most of the relics associated with the Mother of God left this city. A portion of the Girdle was translated to Vatopedi Monastery on Mt. Athos where it is kept to this day. (Reference by AgionOros.ru ) Pravoslavie.ru 17 сентября 2014 г. Orthodox Christians begin celebration of Holy Week/Православие.Ru Orthodox Christians begin celebration of Holy Week SOURCE: Amarillo Globe News By Eboni Graham Sean Steffen/Amarillo Globe-NewsDavid Eckley is protopresbyter at St. John " s Eastern Orthodox Church, where members began their observance of Holy Week starting Friday. For Orthodox Christians in Amarillo, Friday marks the most spiritual of Christian journeys known as Holy Week with services that began Friday and ending with Pascha on May 5. “We have services every morning and every evening throughout that week,” said Carl Williams, parishioner and president of the parish council at St. John’s Eastern Orthodox Church. “Our Holy Week is centered around Passover; that’s why it’s different from the Western church.” The Orthodox Church identifies its roots in the early Church, particularly as it developed within the Greek-speaking eastern side of the Roman Byzantine Empire. “Because we’re Orthodox, we’re worldwide and we’re one of the original churches,” said David Eckley, protopresbyter (priest) of St. John’s Eastern Orthodox Church. “We are the original church in the sense that it’s from the apostles that we were formed, Pentecostal.” In accordance with the Old Testament, the Jewish Passover happens first, then follows the observance of Holy Week, Eckley said. “Holy Week starts with the service of Lazarus on Saturday,” he said. “Then we have Palm Sunday, the Bridegroom service, and in some instances, when you get into Holy Week toward the end, you’re going to get into stations of the cross; what we do is take him down from the cross for Holy Friday.” In the United States, many Christians follow the Gregorian calendar established in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. However, Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar, established by Julius Caesar in 42 B.C. “It’s rare that Pascha falls on the same day as everyone else,” Eckley said. The contrast between the two calendars can be vastly different. This year, for example, the majority of Christians celebrated Easter on March 31.

Ukrainian army shelling Iveron Convent in Donetsk Donetsk, October 19, 2014 The Convent of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God in Donetsk is being continuously shelled. It is situated near the airport where there is an ongoing fighting in spite of the truce declared not long ago, reports the Zvezda (“ The Star ”) TV channel.      There is only one inaccuracy in the TV story of Zvezda : the Wonder-Working Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the main shrine of the convent, painted on Holy Mount Athos at the request and with the blessing of the famous elder Schema-Archimandrite Zosima (Sokur; 1944-2002), has left the convent. The icon is temporarily staying in Larinka village, the convent informs. From the feast of the Protection to October 26, the feast of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the convent sisters and parishioners will be praying hard so that the Holy Theotokos might reveal Her will as to where this holy icon should be kept afterwards. One of the volunteer corps members who currently guards the church has reported that the convent is regularly shelled from the airport side. “Every day they fire at us, lay mines and other ammunition,” the self-defense forces representative related. The church is in half-ruined state. Shells shatter windows, damage walls, icons are hit by shrapnel. About the main shrine of the convent Through the efforts of late elder Zosima (Sokur) a request was made to paint a copy of the Wonder-Working Iveron Icon of the Mother of God on Holy Mount Athos, reports Donbass Pravoslavny . The copy of the wonder-working icon was painted by Monk Yannis from the Russian St. Panteleimon’s Monastery on Mt. Athos with observance of all the canons of icon-painting (fasting, prayer, pouring of holy water over the icon board, mixing the colors with holy water, celebration of Liturgies). Miracles and healings from this copy of the wonder-working icon have been witnessed. With the joint efforts of generous donors and those people whose prayer requests to Holy Theotokos were fulfilled, the icon was adorned with golden crowns (garlands). After the cross procession the icon was installed at the Holy Iveron Convent. 21 октября 2014 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

They will remove the Lord’s clothes—hurry to clothe yourself with them, to cover your sinful nakedness with His righteousness and accomplishments. A spear shall bring forth water and blood from His side—stand beneath the Cross with open mouth, that at least a drop of life will fall inside you, to extinguish the flames of hell which consume you. Again, I repeat: the coming days are the most favorable for sinners’ repentance, for the essence of these days is the salvation of the whole world, to which the wise thief bears witness. Amen. In a passage describing the frescoes and commemoration books of the Holy Cross Monastery in Jerusalem, Bishop Timote writes that an image of St. Kaikhosro the Georgian is among the sacred frescoes. New York Street may be Named in Honor of Holy Patriarch Tikhon New York City, August 1, 2014      The Northern Cross Historical Society of Russian Compatriots in the USA has proposed naming a street in New York City after Holy Patriarch Tikhon (Belavin) of Moscow and All Russia (1865-1925), reports ITAR-TASS . This initiative is supported by Russians and Orthodox Americans living in New York, hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Patriarchal parishes in the USA. “The petition concerning this will be submitted to the mayor’s office in the next few days, in September it will go through the City Council, and we feel certain that in the coming months we will have a Patriarch Tikhon Street in the city,” said the president of the Northern Cross Society, Yuri Sandulov. It is supposed to extend along East 97 th Street from Park Avenue to Fifth Avenue. According to present New York City municipal laws, at least 20,000 New York citizens must support the renaming of a street. “There are more than 300,000 Russian-speaking citizens in the city who consider themselves to be children of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church outside of Russia, which is a part of the former. Most of them are enthusiastic about the idea of perpetuating the memory of His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon, who became the first patriarch after the restoration of the Patriarchate in Russia” in 1918, noted Sandulov. Patriarch Tikhon’s ministry was closely connected with America: between 1898 and 1907 he was Bishop of North America, Alaska and the Aleutians. Through St. Tikhon’s efforts many Orthodox books were translated into English, and St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York was built (the cathedral is situated on the very part of 97 th Street that will probably be named after the patriarch). He also undertook an enormous amount of missionary work—dozens of new churches were open during his time as bishop there. “Orthodox Christians of America remember that Holy Patriarch Tikhon succeeded in preserving the Church in the circumstances of the most cruel persecutions against the faithful that followed the October revolution in Russia. He was our great compatriot who greatly contributed to the rapprochement between Russia and the USA. It is particularly necessary to remember his spiritual and secular exploits now, when the tension between our countries has increased,” believes the president of the Northern Cross Society. 4 августа 2014 г.
