St. John Chimchimeli the Philosopher Commemorated on February 10 Little information about the life of Saint John of Chimchimeli has been preserved, but we know that he was a great translator, philosopher, and defender of the Georgian Christian Faith. John received his education in present-day Bulgaria, at the literary school of the famous Petritsoni (now Bachkovo) Georgian Monastery. One historian writes: “In his eulogy on the death of Saint Demetre the King, John the Philosopher of Chimchimeli brilliantly describes the glory, honor, and heroism of this holy man’s life.” Saint John translated many exegetical compositions, including two commentaries on the Book of Ecclesiastes, one by Metrophanes of Smyrna (Metropolitan of Smyrna (857-880). His Commentary on Ecclesiastes is preserved only in Georgian.) and the other by Olympiodorus of Alexandria. (A 6th-century deacon who wrote a series of commentaries on the books of the Bible, not to be confused with the neoplatonist philosopher also of the 6th century.) He also translated An Explanation of the Gospel According to Saint Mark and An Explanation of the Gospel According to Saint Luke , both by Blessed Theophylactus of Bulgaria. The works of our Holy Father John of Chimchimeli are fundamental to the canon of Georgian theological literature. In his work Pilgrimage , the eminent eighteenth-century historian Archbishop Timote (Gabashvili) mentions John of Chimchimeli among the holy fathers portrayed in the frescoes at the Holy Cross Monastery in Jerusalem. In the second half of the 19th century the historian Mose Janashvili wrote, in his History of the Georgian Church , that John of Chimchimeli directed a literary school in the village of Gremi in Kakheti. According to Janashvili, students at Saint John’s school were instructed in philosophy and theology as well as in the Greek, Syrian, and Arabic languages. Thy soul rejoices with the holy Apostles, O Father Grigol, crown of the martyrs. Through thy prayers make us worthy of everlasting joy! According to another account, the martyr entered the gas chamber in place of a Jewish man with a large family. This was reported by a former prisoner, who, after being liberated, visited Metropolitan Dionysius and gave him St. Grigol’s cross.   Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze For further information on the book THE LIVES OF THE GEORGIAN SAINTS by Archpriest Zakaria Machitadze contact St. Herman Press : St. Herman Press, P.O. There is also a Russian Orthodox parish of St. Kentigern in Glasgow. All the parish churches (among them are several ancient ones) in Scotland, which bear the name of St. Kentigern, are officially dedicated to " St. Mungo " . Many of them are situated in the places where the saint preached or built chapels and churches. St. Mungo " s Church in Bromfield, Cumbria. No fewer than nine Anglican and Catholic churches in the north of England, particularly in Cumbria, are dedicated to St. Kentigern. Thus, there are a very early church of St. Mungo and a holy well in the village of Bromfield in Cumbria (near Hadrian " s Wall, the church is even probably of Roman origin); there are also an ancient church and a holy well of St. Mungo in the village of Caldbeck in the same county (the well may date back to the 6th century); another ancient church of St. Kentigern stands in the Cumbrian village of Crosthwaite, just outside Keswick (the original name was Crosfeld; the saint most certainly preached here)—nine ancient crosses were found near this church and one more ancient cross inside it. Together with his mother St. Theneva, St. Kentigern is venerated as the patron-saint of Glasgow. He is also considered the apostle of northwestern England and southwestern Scotland. Together with Sts Columba of Iona and Ninian of Whithorn he is also considered to be one of the greatest saints and enlighteners of the Scottish land. Holy Hierarch Kentigern, pray to God for us! Fr. Paul affirms that they are all parishioners of this church—the only one there that serves the Eucharist, the sacrament of Thanksgiving to God, for Whom all are living. Added to the number of reposed parishioners for whom we pray in Antarctica was one more name—a cameraman of Russia’s Channel One, Anatoly Klyan, who filmed the laying of the foundation of the church on King George Island. Anatoly was killed last spring in Donetsk. I remember him standing with his camera on his shoulder, pointed at the porthole of an aircraft carrier C-130. With these shots from the clouds of the wing and propeller of the military aircraft flying to Antarctica began within a few days the report of our expedition on the “Vremya” (“Time”) TV program. Two years later, the church assembled in the Altai and disassembled for its travel to King George Island, then reassembled from numbered logs, was consecrated by Bishop Theognost (Superior of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra) in the name of the Holy Trinity, although at first is was planned that it would be dedicated to St. Nicholas, the protector of sailors, and therefore also of polar explorers. But here is something symbolic: the only icon on the table that served as temporary altar was a small plastic icon that I had purchased the day before in Catholic store in Punta Arenas—the southernmost city of Chili and Latin America. It was a table icon of the Holy Trinity by St. Andrei Rublev. Symbolic. And the church in Antarctica, a church amidst an icy universe with the Southern Cross above it, is perhaps the best illustration for the last line of the Creed: “I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come.” Priest Constantine Kravtsov spoke with Hieromonk Pavel (Gelyastanov) Translation by OrthoChristian.com 18 декабря 2014 г. Archive Clergy of the Northern Deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese of ROCOR call for the protection of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church 24 March 2023 year 19:33 On Wednesday, 22 March, 2023, the Great Lenten Pastoral Retreat of the northern deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia concluded with the celebration of the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The services were led by His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of ROCOR, along with His Grace Bishop Luke of Syracuse, the brethren and a multitude of diocesan clerics. Singing at the services was a unified choir of monastics and students of Holy Trinity Seminary under the direction of Deacon Nicholas Kotar and Priest Efrem Willmarth. The gathering issued a resolution calling for the protection of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church.  The resolution  states: " Having gathered in Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York, for the Lenten retreat and conference of clergy of the northern deaneries of the Eastern American Diocese, we, clergy and monastics, having bowed down in worship before the Cross, communed of the Holy Mysteries, and honored the memory of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste, raised up our prayers for the flock entrusted to us. We prayed especially for our persecuted brothers and sisters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, led by His Beatitude Onuphry, Metropolitan of Kiev & All Ukraine. As citizens of the United States – founded 250 years ago on the principles of religious rights and freedoms – we ask all of the Orthodox Christians living in this country, as well as its politicians, representatives of various governmental institutions and social organizations, to raise their voices in defense of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, her archpastors, clergy, monastics, and the millions of parishioners who have been subjected to years of persecution by their own government. Having learned of the closure of the Near and Far Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra – the cradle of Orthodoxy in Rus’ and the looming eviction of all of its monks and inhabitants, including the students of the Kiev Theological Schools we express our vigorous protest against the actions of the Ukrainian government toward the canonical Church, which nourishes the overwhelming majority of that country’s citizens " .
