In this interview he discusses modern asceticism, the question of the future of Orthodox Christianity, and how Christians can best tackle the crises of the modern world. Статья   Priest Antoniy Borisov: Could you please introduce yourself? Professor Constantine Niarchos: Yes. My name is Constantine Niarchos, and I am a Professor of Ancient Greek Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy in the University of Athens. I teach ancient Greek philosophy, but I am very much interested in the relation between philosophy in general, and especially ancient Greek philosophy, to the Christian doctrines, to the Christian faith, and to Christian ethics. I believe that there is an interaction between ancient Greek philosophy and Christianity, especially in the early times when dogma was formulated, and the Greek Fathers of the early period, let’s say of the 3 rd or the 4 th centuries, integrated into Christian teaching quite a lot of the philosophical terms and philosophical expressions and even the ideas of the antique Greek philosophers – I’m especially referring to Plato and Aristotle – and concerning ethics we have a great influence of Stoic ethics on the Christian formulation of ethics. Taking into account that there are quite large differences between philosophy and theology, I personally believe that philosophy is an creation of the human mind and theology is the revelation of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, to the universe. A.B.: Thank you very much for this introduction. And so the first question. What do you think is the role of the traditional Orthodox ascetic in the modern world nowadays?

John Whiteford In his most recent blog post, he has now taken aim against not only the " religious right " (a favorite target of his in recent years), but now even the Orthodox Church that he still is ostensibly a member of is in his cross-hairs—because they support Russia " s laws restricting the promotion of homosexuality. Christianity as threatened by liberalised doctrine as by Islamic violence: Nigerian Anglican Primate Christianity as threatened by liberalised doctrine as by Islamic violence: Nigerian Anglican Primate Christianity is an “endangered species” in Africa, pressed between violence from Islamist terrorism on one side and doctrinal and moral “disunity” among Christians on the other, a leading Nigerian Anglican bishop has said. The Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, the Anglican Primate of Nigeria’s 18 million Anglican Christians, warned the other African nations that doctrinal relativism, which he called “nominalism,” and the “doctrine of prosperity” – the idea that God rewards the morally upright with material wealth - are creating as serious a threat to the continuance of Christianity as Islamic violence on the continent. Cultic Groups Stalk Harvest Crusade Attendees/Православие.Ru Cultic Groups Stalk Harvest Crusade Attendees Torrence, California, August 4, 2010 - Christian Newswire When Lynn’s son Bryce went to the annual Harvest Crusade, a Christian music and evangelism event, she had no way of knowing he would be lured into a cultic group known as the Twelve Tribes . Before she knew it, Bryce abandoned his studies at Christian college and disowned his family. The Twelve Tribes regularly field teams of proselytizers to intercept new converts and their friends as they leave the Crusade. Dancing and distributing literature around their brightly painted “hippie bus” in the Angel Stadium parking lot, Twelve Tribes members invite passerby’s to commit themselves to a more authentic Christian lifestyle in their “messianic communities.” But as Lynn discovered to her dismay, behind the quaint “freepapers” and homespun clothing is a religious system marked by exclusivism, racism, manipulation, and the spiritual domination of a man who calls himself “Yoneq.” Seventh-day Adventists are among the other groups that chase down Crusade attendees. These followers of the prophetess Ellen G. White emphasize end-time themes, especially the observance of Saturday as the true day of worship, in order to avoid the coming wrath of God. “Churches need to inoculate their members against ‘love bombing’ by predatory groups at crusades and concerts,” says Gretchen Goldsmith, CEO of Rose Publishing. “Christians need help in discerning truth from error so they can recognize and resist counterfeits–and this is especially true of new believers who have just responded to an invitation to trust in Jesus.” Goldsmith recommends that churches educate their attendees on a regular basis on key beliefs and doctrines, and be familiar with the way these are twisted or denied by groups claiming to be Christian but actually rejecting the 2000-year-old message. To help bridge the gap for Christians, Rose Publishing has just released a new 6-session DVD-based course called Christianity, Cults & Religions . It covers the key Christian beliefs and why Christians hold them. It also goes into detail on the beliefs of six groups that aggressively proselytize today and how to answer them.

Christian religious education ‘naïve, cartoonish’ and lacking substance: Oxford researchers/Православие.Ru Christian religious education ‘naïve, cartoonish’ and lacking substance: Oxford researchers Hilary White “Naïve,” “cartoonish” and “lacking intellectual development.” This is how a group of education experts at Oxford University have described the quality of religious education on Christianity in British schools. The group has sharply criticized the way multiculturalism, secularism and fear of offending have watered down the teaching of Christianity in religious education (RE) classes. Currently, RE classes, which are mandatory in state schools in England up to age 16, offer little more than a “naive and cartoonish” understanding of Christians, and fail to delve into more substantive theological content, the group has said. “Fearful of evangelising,” teachers “may reduce Christianity to a series of factoids” while avoiding more personal, “confessional, nurturing approaches,” particularly in non-religious state schools, said Dr. Nigel Fancourt, the group’s lead researcher. The reluctance of teachers to give substantive lessons in the meaning of Christian doctrines has resulted in students being “presented with inaccurate stereotypes of Christians,” and a skewed and watered-down understanding of Christian moral doctrine. Out of a fear of offending non-Christian students, teachers are instead favouring more in-depth study of other religions, such as Islam or Judaism, rather than Christianity. “Concerns have been raised about how pupils often leave with an incoherent or stereotypical picture of Christianity, or without having been intellectually challenged,” Fancourt added. Teachers tend to shy away from the religious content of RE, focusing instead on a “soft generic moral message.” “The feeding of the 5,000 becomes sharing your lunchbox, not a way of raising questions about ‘miracles’”. Such teaching, Dr. Fancourt wrote in the Guardian, cannot help students “develop the essential values for life in a multicultural society, such as tolerance and respect” and presents little more than a “cardboard cutout” of Christians.

Abstract: The subject of this research is the question of the name of God in biblical texts. From the linguistic perspective, the author reviews the religious doctrine of the banned in the Russian Federation pseudo-Christian organization Jehovah’s Witnesses, which speculative teaching has a destructive impact upon the society. This community endows a biblical name with exclusive meaning that is implicitly presented in Tetragrammaton (YHWH), and explicitly – in the medieval Masoretic version of vowel marking Jehovah (in fact, erroneous). Beyond the sectarian doctrine hides the polemical rhetoric, aimed at the names of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, since the proclamation of Jesus as Good ( Κριος)in the Greek Language, according to sectarian logic, is merely a titular nomination, relegating Christ Himself to the level of most venerated righteous men and prophets. The scientific novelty consists in the thesis that the principles of nomination of God in biblical texts are studied from the linguoculturological perspective. The conclusion is made that speculative teaching of pseudo-Christian religious organization is structured on the wittingly distorted and inaccurate interpretations of translation of the name of God. Philological research of the principles of nomination of God in biblical texts not only exacerbates the understanding of the religious doctrines belonging to the traditional Christian confessions, but also allows to critically assess the speculative teachings of pseudo-Christian organizations.

Christianity: a persecuted religion/Православие.Ru Christianity: a persecuted religion Source: stuff.co.nz Thursday is Christmas Day. For most New Zealanders, this is not much more than a hard-earned day-off, an occasion to gather with family and licence to eat a quite a bit more than one " s diet allows. It is also (particularly for children) about the material aspirations of gift giving. For New Zealand " s Christians, of course, it is also an important religious festival commemorating the nativity of their Man-God. It is the end of the penitential season known as advent and a time of great celebration. The accoutrements of the season are more than quaint customs and traditions to these people: they are symbols of intense spiritual yearning. But this is true for fewer and fewer New Zealanders. Overall, we are not a religious society and, truth be told, it is difficult to remain an observant Christian in our present age. Changing times have eroded the faith " s once privileged position in our social order. The informal pressures that kept them in place have been washed away. People no longer feel duty-bound to go along with the extraordinary claims of Christianity and its often-demanding moral injunctions. Instead, the wider culture is now hostile to orthodox Christianity, which is held to a much higher standard of scrutiny than other religions and cultures. Those who are quite happy to casually sneer at Christians around the office coffee machine seldom have the courage to do the same when other minority identities are concerned. Where media commentators are purposely respectful of other faiths, they are seldom afraid to propound ignorantly about Christian doctrine or issue bone-headed advice to Christian leaders. Last month one of Labour " s candidates at the election took to a popular Left-wing blog to publish a tirade against Christians in the party. The Bible was repeatedly denounced as " snake-oil " and the Christian God was described as " a mean Mutha " who " nailed up his only son as a lesson to other wrongdoers " .
