Our Churches intend to defend the principles of Christian morality in the public space  and oppose to erroneous theological understanding of it. The Commission recommends to establish professional cooperation between our respective Church institutions in the future. The Russian Orthodox Church has a Synodal Commission on Bioethics, and there are also the appropriate specialists under the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. As a first practical step, the Russian and Ethiopian sides will exchange their official Church documents on this topic. The mentioned documents shall be carefully studied, translated into Amharic and Russian, respectively, and published for the attention of our believers and a wider audience. In the future, it could also make a weighty contribution to the development of the official dialogue between the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Church families. 4) Exchange of experience in the media space The great success of our Bilateral Dialogue was the press-tour of the Russian secular and church media specialists headed by co-secretary of our Commission Rev. Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov) to Ethiopia September, 27 – October, 4, 2019, during the Meskel (Holy Cross) Celebration. In addition to establishing professional contacts, a number of TV projects issued about the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, its history, traditions and modern life. All of them had a great success among the millions of Russian Orthodox believers. Our colleagues who made these exclusive documentary materials brilliantly reflected the fraternal spirit of the relationship between our peoples. Russian side express special thanks for accompanying the project to co-secretary from Ethiopian side Rev. Fr. Daniel Seifemichael, general director of Media Corporation of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Mr. Vladimir Legoyda, the Head of the Department for Church’s society and media relations of the Russian Orthodox Church. This cooperation in media seems to be a very promising field of cooperation.  It should definitely be continued on a regular basis.

Am 23. Oktober 2015 wurde er zum Bischof im Optina-Kloster ernannt. Am 26. Oktober wurde er während des Gottesdienstes im Nowodewitschi-Kloster in Moskau zum Bischof geweiht. Die Gottesdienste hat der Heiligste Patriarch Kyrill vorstanden. Mit Erlass des Heiligsten Patriarchen Kyrill ab 28. Oktober 2015 wurde er zum Vorsteher der Kirche der Geburt Johannes des Täufers in Moskau (Priesnensky) ernannt. Mit Beschluss vom Heiligen Synod ab 24. Dezember 2015 (Protokolle 89) wurde er in den Kirchlichen Oberrat der Russischen Orthodoxen Kirche aufgenommen. Mit Beschluss vom Heiligen Synod ab 29. Juli 2017 (Protokolle 52) wurde er vom Amt des Leiters der Kirchen des Moskauer Patriarchats in Italien und des Vorstehers der Russischen Kirche St. Katharina von Rom freigemacht. Der Synod hat beschlossen, den Titel “Zwenigorodskij” zu haben. Im September- Dezember 2017 - der vorläufige Geschäftsführer der Berliner Diözese. Mit Beschluss vom Heiligen Synod ab 28. Dezember 2017 (Protokolle 116) wurde er zum Leiter der Diözesen von Wien und Österreich und Budapest und Ungarn mit dem Titel “von Wien und Budapest” und der Erhaltung des Amtes vom Leiter der Verwaltung des Moskauer Patriarchats für ausländische Errichtungen ernannt. Mit Beschluss vom Heiligen Synod wurde ihm auch die vorläufige Verwaltung der Kirchen des Moskauer Patriarchats in Italien beauftragt. Am 1. Februar 2018 wurde er im Christ-Erlöser-Kirche in Moskau vom Heiligsten Patriarchen Kyrill zum Erzbischof geweiht. Mit Beschluss vom Heiligen Synod ab 15. Oktober 2018 (Protokolle 77) wurde er von der vorläufigen Verwaltung der Kirchen des Moskauer Patriarchats in Italien freigemacht. Mit Beschluss vom Heiligen Synod ab 30. It was therefore quite timely to include in the agenda of the present Conference this issue, and I thank its conveners for asking me to present the subject. If for a Greek speaking person it is relatively easy to deliver a conference in English or French about the meaning of religion, it is not so simple to do the same as far as ethnicity and nationalism are concerned. Simply because in the Greek language these two notions – both originating from the word ethnos, which literally means “nation” – very often overlap and lead to confusion. For example, in Greek the term nationality corresponds to ethnikotis, nationalism to ethnikismos, ethnicity to ethnismos. Therefore before speaking about the relation of ethnicity and nationalism to Religion and to the Church in particular, it will be helpful to first clarify the meaning of these two terms as they are being used nowadays. On several occasions there were attempts to define the meaning of the terms ethnicity, ethnic group and nation. By ethnologists, anthropologists, historians or politicians. Let me present some examples. According to Richard Schermerhorn, a pioneer of the study on ethnic relations, an ethnic group is a collectivity within a larger society, having real or putative common ancestry, common memory of a historical past, and a cultural focus on one or more symbolic elements defined as the epitome of their peoplehood: e.g. kinship patterns, physical continuity, religious affiliation, language, nationality and a consciousness of kin among members of the group. For Joshua Fishman, ethnicity was always experienced as a kinship phenomenon, as a continuity within the self and within those who share an intergenerational link to common ancestors. In this sense ethnicity is a tangible, living reality that makes every human a link in an eternal bond from generation to generation, from past ancestors to those in the future. For anthropologist Fredrik Barth, the term ethnic group designates a population that is largely biologically self perpetuating, that shares fundamental cultural values, and has a membership which identifies itself as constituting a category distinguishable from other categories of people, 331 while for Steve Fenton ethnicity is a social phenomenon embedded in social, political and economic structures, that form an important element of both the way ethnicity is expressed and the social importance it assumes.

As Metropolitan Mar Stephanos informed the participants in the meeting, a process had started to include the name of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow in the liturgical calendar of the Malankara Church. Participants of the meeting felt important to note that St. Matrona is considered to be a heavenly patron of the bilateral dialogue between the two Churches. 13.               Carrying out projects and joint events dedicated to the history of the bilateral contacts The participants in the meeting mentioned several outstanding figures in the history of the bilateral relations who had done a lot to promote the inter-church dialogue. Such, among others, were Archimandrite Andronik (Yelpidinsky), Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) of Leningrad and Novgorod, Metropolitan Paulose Mar Gregorios (Paul Varghese), and Nikolai Zernov. The Working Group members acknowledged the importance of popularizing their contribution and assisting in preparing and releasing publications about them in Russia and India. 14.               Cooperation in the diaspora The Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church take pastoral care of their faithful living beyond their canonical territories and have diocesan and parochial bodies in the diaspora, in particular, in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. As the participants in the meeting pointed out, cooperation between those bodies at the regional level will be useful in providing mutual support on a wide range of issues. 15.               Promoting theological talks The history of the bilateral contacts between the two Churches has a rich tradition of theological talks which the Working Group members considered to be of great importance. This experience is be explored and popularized and the talks are to continue in future. The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church delegation expressed appreciation to Metropolitan Leonid of Klin and the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate for hosting the second meeting of the Working Group in Moscow.
