On April 24-27, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the East & Malankara Metropolitan, the Working Group for Coordinating Bilateral Relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church held its second meeting at the Stavropegial Convent of the Protection of the Mother of God in Moscow. The Moscow Patriarchate was represented by: Metropolitan Leonid of Klin, Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, co-chairman of the Working Group; hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov), DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations, secretary of the Working Group; deacon Dimitry Serov, head of the Moscow Theological Academy Publishing House; hierodeacon Pyotr (Akhmatkhanov), staff member of the Department for External Church Relations. The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was represented by: Metropolitan Abraham Mar Stephanos, Metropolitan of the Diocese of UK, Europe & Africa; Rev. Aswin Fernandis, Executive Director of the Department of Ecumenical Relations. The Working Group members noted the utmost importance of their meeting with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia held in the Patriarchal Chambers of the Kremlin Faceted Palace on 25 th April 2023 . T he issues raised during that meeting provided a basis for further deliberations at the Working Group’s session concerning the development of the bilateral relations. More often than not there will be a small number of people who use the leader and they themselves are the true authorities. Either way, the average follower is under scrutiny to keep up the appearances of perfection. All this gives the schismatic a sense that he belongs to a different and superior society. The rules of the group are more important than that of the greater society. This gives the schismatics a sense of superiority and entitlement. Worldly society has no real authority over them and sinful people have no real rights. They may obey civil laws begrudgingly to avoid prison. Many begin to talk about belonging spiritually to theocracies and ideal governments that do not exist. The realpolitik of political life is scorned. Some will even begin to develop their own communities. The schismatic, suffering from a sense of superiority, entitlement and exclusion, begins to see his group as an island haven in a sea of sin and hostility. The overwhelming sense of hostility will lead to the group developing paranoia. These groups become suspicious of others. People in the group begin to doubt the loyalty and fidelity of others. They speak little of their internal conflicts. The group image of perfection is upheld at all costs. When this occurs, the Christian schismatic become apocalyptic. People begin to talk more about the Devil and the Antichrist ruling the world. This way of thinking only increases the schismatic’s justification for his behavior. There becomes an increasing belief that the end is near. Talk in the community will be about how God will only save the faithful remnant. Now an interesting phenomenon occurs. The superior people, especially the leaders, begin to fall into antinomian behaviors. Antinomianism means against or opposed to the law. Through out history exclusive apocalyptic movements end up justifying immoral behaviors for themselves. The most common sins involve money and sex. It is not uncommon for the leader or leaders to exploit members for money and sex.

As was mentioned at the meeting, cooperation in the media sphere had a very important outcome – a documentary about Apostle Thomas and his Indian heritage that had been filmed in India and shown on “Spas” federal Orthodox TV channel on Saint Thomas Sunday. During the meeting, Metropolitan Leonid and Metropolitan Mar Stephanos outlined the current state of affairs in the Russian Orthodox and the Malankara Churches respectively and shared some relevant information of importance for the whole Christendom. The delegation of the Malankara Church expressed understanding with regard to the Moscow Patriarchate’s position on the persecutions against the canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine. The Working Group pointed out the following 15 aspects of the bilateral cooperation to be implemented in the near future: 1.                   Upholding traditional values and supporting Christians It was deemed important to voice concerted position on such issues as preservation of traditional values and to exert joint efforts in response to the persecution of Christians in various regions of the world. It involves cooperation in upholding traditional Biblical values and counteracting the efforts aimed at introducing into the life of society the LGBT ideology, the so-called “gender ideology,” as well as at legalizing abortion and euthanasia and destroying the institution of family. 2.                   Cooperation at international forums The Working Group members acknowledged the necessity to coordinate efforts at various international forums, first of all, the World Council of Churches when topics of mutual interest are discussed and to voice concerted position on the most burning issues. The Moscow Patriarchate representatives expressed particular gratitude to the delegation of the Malankara Church led by the Working Group co-chairman, Metropolitan Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, for supporting the Russian Orthodox Church delegation at the WCC 11 th Assembly in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2022, and for opposing the attempted discrimination against the Russian Orthodox Church.

Seeing that the two monasteries of Duboki Potok and Devine Vode were controlled by groups of persons who had entered into open schism with the Church, which was officially confirmed during the day by the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the SOC, and that there might be attacks by the schismatics on other monasteries of the Diocese, the newly elected Bishop Teodosije of Raska and Prizren, together with the administrative deputy for Mitrovica area protopresbyter-stavrophor Milija Arsovic entered the monastery of Devine Vode at about 17:30 to establish canonical order. Together with the hegumen of the monastery, hieromonk Fotije, the clergy of the church administrative district, a group of faithful, and several Serb members of KPS, Bishop Teodosije entered the monastery of Devine Vode without resistance and ordered the group of schismatic nuns who had uncanonically settled in this monastery to leave the holy shrine immediately and allow the canonical administration to take over the monastery. The nuns left the monastery without resistance, though they verbally insulted Bishop Teodosije. They then went by car to the former Bishop Artemije in nearby Duboki Potok. It should be noted that nun Sara Mosura, who heads this group of these schismatic nuns afterwards said in a statement for some media that Bishop Teodosije allegedly physically assaulted the nuns. Bearing in mind the presence of the clergy and the police during the takeover of the monastery, it is pointless to comment on these open lies and slander. The aforementioned group of nuns, which in recent months has been wandering through Serbia, recently settled in the village of Leimir in Srem where they formed some sort of private sectarian habitation. Although they had been offered with the highest mercy canonical release by Metropolitan Amfilohije in October despite their unmonastic behavior, and Metropolitan Nikolaj of Dabar-Bosnia canonical reception in his Metropolitanate, these 8 nuns refused to join in regular religious life, remaining loyal to former Bishop Artemije whom they, like the rebel monks (30 altoghether), consider their sole " canonical bishop " .

6. The growth of alternative media and use of media, effecting a splintering of society. In the Netherlands, this is referred to as “pillarization”, the idea that your friends, school, church, soccer club, credit union, and political membership are made up of the same select group of people. Because of the polarization on major issues, people of differing views will not simply avoid certain subjects (an age-old Canadian tactic), but will actually  avoid each other . This will undermine civil cohesiveness and neighbourhood spirit. At the same time, traditional-minded people of faith (such as Orthodox Christians, Evangelical Protestants, conservative Roman Catholics, Copts, Sikhs, Hindus, and even moderate Muslims) will find each other, and begin to cooperate on issue of shared concern, creating virtual communities and unlikely alliances. Smart politicians will anticipate this, and work together with groups who share their values (or in the case of the anti-faith left, against them). Along with this, alternative media will proliferate, assisted by technologies that will make video blogs, petitions, and issues-based fundraising easy and cheap for a wide variety of groups. Despite the Soviet-style statism surrounding the legal redefinition of marriage, those who rely on the state to enforce the new normal will be sadly disappointed when they are constantly undermined by YouTube and GoFundMe. How have people responded? 1. Traditionally-minded people will find each other, and start to work together in ways they never thought possible. When I was a kid, people actually cared if you were a Roman Catholic or a Protestant; in the new normal, these distinctions will be set on the back burner to allow like-minded people to work together on issues of religious freedom and conscience. The enemy of my enemy will quickly become my friend. 2. The mastery of technology, to use against the propagandists. Few people believe any more that fighting the good fight will eventually convince and covert everyone (although there are a few who do believe this). The use of technology such as social media, online entertainment, comedy, education and training, as well as networking with like-minded people, will serve to strengthen and connect those who are already committed, and will help win over some of those who remain “on the fence” on social issues.
