Orthodoxy is not simply a Church of the past – Patriarch Bartholomew Source: The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Greeting By His All-Holiness To The Toronto " s Conference on the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Patriarch Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch 22 October 2014 Your Eminence and beloved brother Metropolitan Sotirios, Honorable organizers and participants, Dear friends and faithful, It is with sincere paternal joy that we greet you from the sacred Center of the Orthodox Church. We are pleased to extend our paternal blessing as you commence the presentations and discussions of your conference on the Ecumenical Patriarchate, organized by our Metropolis of Toronto and Canada, entitled “Reflecting on the Past; Looking toward the Future.” We assure you that we are with you in spirit and in prayer. Today, you will be exploring aspects of an ancient and apostolic institution, the Church of Constantinople. Through the centuries, the Ecumenical Patriarchate has maintained a unique ministry of embracing the world and presiding in love over the various churches, guiding and supporting them in times of difficulty and expansion. Today, it continues to serve in its pastoral and maternal capacity, supporting the various churches that face crisis (for example, previously in the Balkans, but also recently in the Middle East) and coordinating the unity that we all share as the one, catholic and apostolic church. Therefore, as you can appreciate, Orthodoxy is not simply a Church of the past. While it is faithful to Holy Tradition, it is also called to speak its prophetic voice and respond to critical contemporary issues: such as religious freedom and human rights (in Turkey, but also in the Middle East and throughout the world), as well as the mandates of our Lord to “make disciples of all nations” (through the sacred missionary activity of our Church) and “to serve and preserve the earth” as God’s creation (through the protection of the natural environment).

Traditional Christmas Holidays for Canada’s Greek Diaspora admin 28 December 2013 The most important day of Christianity was celebrated with glory by Canada’s Greek Diaspora, despite the inclement weather with stormy winds and heavy snowfall in parts of  Ontario , where electricity has not yet been restored. Some churches in Montreal and Toronto had a night Mass on Christmas according to the traditional Orthodox custom. In other parishes, the Christmas Mass took place on the day of Christmas and it attracted many Greek Orthodox people. The  Metropolitan Sotirios of Canada  in his Christmas encyclical referred to the deeper message of the Savior’s Birth: ” All of us seek and desire peace, prosperity, happiness and joy; yet, we cannot find it, because we may have taken a wrong path in life. The path that leads to prosperity, peace and joy is only one: it is the path and the journey to Christ that he himself taught us by example. As God, He taught us that: “I am the truth, the way and the life.” He was, is and always will be the truth, the way and the life for all people.” On Christmas Day the Greeks gathered in their homes to celebrate this great moment of Christianity in the Greek way. The Northern Greeks roasted pork in the oven, while the Peloponnese and the islanders served turkey and warm egg-lemon soup. Furthermore, patisseries and bakeries in the Greek neighborhood of Park Extension were overflowing with people who wanted to buy melomakarona, kourampiedes and diples all week. The Greek tradition was once more at its peak. The Greek Community of Montreal hosted a Christmas dinner for the needy and the lonely elderly filling their day with the spirit of solidarity. Canadian Conference of Orthodox Bishops held a meeting in Toronto Toronto, March 29, 2011 The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto On March 17, 2011, the Canadian Conference of Orthodox Bishops had a meeting at the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto. On the agenda were the reports of the dialogue with Catholic Bishops, updates on the relations between the Orthodox and Orientals (non-Chalcedonians), the army, hospitals and prisons ministries, pastoral, canonical and liturgical issues, reports the Patriarchal website of the Russian Orthodox Churches in Canada . The participants at the meeting were: His Eminence Metropolitan Sotirios and His Grace Bishop Christoforos of the Greek Metropolis of Toronto, His Grace Job (Iov), Bishop of Kashira, Arministrator of the Patriarchal Parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Canada, His Grace Bishop Gabriel (ROCOR), His Grace Bishop Georgij of the Serbian Diocese of Canada, His Eminence Archbishop Nicolae of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas, His Eminence Metropolitan Yurij of the Ukrainian Church of Canada, His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, His Grace Vicar Bishop Irinee of the OCA and His Grace Bishop Ilias of the Albanian Diocese. The main subject of the meeting was the creation of a regional Assembly of Orthodox Bishops of Canada, about which a petition was sent to the Ecumenical Patriarchate as a result of the last meeting. Plans were also discussed for joint-ministry and fraternal cooperation among the jurisdictions in the future. Bishop Job of Kashira said that he does not see any problem with the creation of an Assembly; however, he would require that the guidelines passed at the fourth Pan-Orthodox pre-council conference, which took place in June 2009, at Shambesi, be strictly adhered to. “Any changes in the borders of an assembly of bishops in the diaspora should only take place based upon the decision passed at the meeting of Primates and representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches, which is called together by the Patriarch of Constantinople,” Bishop Job reminded those present. A date was set for next year’s meeting for March 29, 2012. 29 марта 2011 г. ... Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Greece to Enter Second Nationwide Lockdown Photo: greekherald.com.au According to the Greek Herald , Greece will enter a second nationwide lockdown for three weeks from the morning of Saturday, 7 November. The lockdown will end on November 30. The announcement came from Greece’s Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, tonight after COVID-19 cases spiked in the country in recent days. In a similar way to the first lockdown, movement will be limited to essentials, all retails stores will close and travel between regions will be banned. Secondary schools will close and switch to distance learning. Kindergartens and primary schools will remain open. Authorities will also reintroduce a system obliging citizens to send text messages to a government number to leave home to work, shop, visit a doctor or take exercise. Mitsotakis said during the press conference that the lockdown is necessary, citing an “aggressive increase in infections,” a rise in intubations and ICU entries. “Once again, I choose to take measures sooner rather than later,” Mitsotakis said. “If the government waited and the measures didn’t work, pressure on our hospitals would be unbearable.” Mitsotakis added he is taking note of the advice from the expert committee advising the government, including Greek Australian immunologist, Sotiris Tsiodras. The Prime Minister also said Greece’s Finance Minister, Christos Staikouras, will announce plans later tonight which will financially support citizens who will be affected by the new lockdown. Christ Is Risen! We mourn the innocent victims of the unconscionable van attack in Toronto. Our hearts break for the families who awake to a new reality without their loved ones. We struggle with this senseless act of evil. However, we should not despair. We should not lose hope. We shall persevere and be strengthened by the infinite love and mercy of the Resurrected Lord. Therefore, let us pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives. Let us comfort, support, and give courage to the affected families. I am asking all the Reverend Fathers of our Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada) to offer special memorial service prayers this Sunday for our fallen brothers and sisters. May their memories be Eternal! And may God grant them rest among His angels and His saints. Police said the suspect in the van mounted the kerb on Yonge Street between Finch Avenue and Sheppard Avenue at about 13:30 local time (17:30 GMT) on Monday and drove into pedestrians along a 1km (0.6-mile) stretch. Reza Hashemi, who owns a video shop on Yonge Street, told the BBC he heard screaming on the other side of the road. He said the van was repeatedly mounting the pavement and running into people. The 15 injured remain in hospitals throughout Toronto. Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. Peace and Unity Source: Pemptousia Metropolitan Sotirios 25 February 2022 In the ”Litany of Peace” of the Divine Liturgy, there follows in the third prayer a specific reference to peace, which is our main subject for today.   In it, the Deacon proclaims:  ”For the peace of the whole world, for the stability of the holy churches of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.” It is through this prayer that the Church urges us, as a loving mother, to pray with love and focus for the welfare of others.   Other believers, no matter where they live or how far away they may be, are our siblings in the one family of Christ.   It is with great love that we embrace our fellow human beings, and we ask the Lord for them to enjoy the greatest gift of peace. It is in this petition that we also ask the Lord to enjoy the fruits of His peace, namely the stability of the local Churches and the union of all in His truth. When there are peaceful relations between the states of the world, then the local Churches also enjoy calm waters. In the peace of God the ship of the Church sails steadily to the undisturbed port of the Kingdom. That is why we ask Christ in the Divine Liturgy: ”Remember, Lord Your holy… Apostolic Church, from end to end of the inhabited world…end the schisms of the churches; Quench the ragings of the nations; speedily put down the uprisings of heresies  by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Receive us into Your kingdom, declaring us to be children of the light and of the day. Grant us Your   peace  and Your love,  O Lord, our God; for You have given us all things” (the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great). The Church of Christ is, of course, one. But on the local level it is spread all over the world. In order to survive, since the Apostolic times, it has been organized in Local Ecclesiastical Provinces with a spiritual leader, the Bishop. The decisions of the Ecumenical Councils regulate with the help of special Rules (Canons), how a Diocese, Archdiocese, Metropolis or Patriarchate operates.
