Metropolitan Hilarion meets with Spain’s ambassador to Russia admin 22 August 2013 August 20, 2013 On August 20, 2012, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations (DECR), met at the DECR with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Russia Mr. Jose Ignacio Carbajal Garate. Participating in the meeting were also Archpriest Sergiy Zvonarev, DECR secretary for the far-abroad countries, and Mr. M. Palacio, a DECR staff member. During the meeting, which was held in a friendly atmosphere, Metropolitan Hilarion told his guest about the ministry of the Russian Orthodox Church in Spain and her pastoral care of compatriots living there. He also expressed interest in the development of student exchanges and pilgrimages between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Catholic Church in Spain. On his part, Mr. Carbajal Garate noted the weighty contribution the Russian Church made to the life of Russian society. The both expressed concern for the crisis processes taking place in Europe today. Moscow Patriarchate delegation attended enthronement of Pope Francis of Rome March 19, 2013 On March 19, 2013, a delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate led by the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, attended the enthronement of Pope Francis of Rome, which took place on St. Peter’s Square in Rome. The delegation included Metropolitan Antony of Borispol, chancellor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church; Metropolitan Platon of Feodosia and Kerch; Bishop Sergiy of Solnechnogorsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate administrative secretariat; and Hieromonk Antony (Sevryuk), rector of the church of the Holy Protomartyr Catherine in Rome. The delegation is accompanied by Rev. Milan Zust of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and M. Palacio, DECR staff member. Present at the ceremony of enthronement were His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, His Beatitude Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington and Metropolitan of All America and Canada; Supreme Catholicons-Patriarch of All Armenians Karekin II, as well as delegations from Local Orthodox Churches, representatives of the Anglican Communion churches, various Protestant denominations and other religious confessions. There were 132 representatives of states including heads of states and governments who have diplomatic relations with the Vatican. The Russian Federation was represented at the ceremony by Sergey Naryshkin, chairman of the State Duma. The solemn ceremony began with presentation of the papal insignia to the newly-elected pontiff. Cardinal Protodeacon Jean-Louis Tauran placed the pallium (omophoros) on the pontiff’s shoulders, and Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, placed upon his finger the fisherman’s ring with an image of St. Peter. Then Pope Francis, assisted by cardinals, celebrated the mass in Latin. Some prayers and readings were pronounced in Italian, English, French, Greek and other languages. After the Reading of the Gospel, Pope Francis addressed himself to the hundreds-of-thousands-strong crowd in St. Peter’s Square with a sermon devoted to St. Joseph the Worker whose memory falls in the Catholic calendar on March 19. After the singing of the Lord’s Prayer, Patriarch Bartholomew and Catholicos-Patriarch Karekin II came up to the pontiff to exchange kiss of peace with him. The service ended with the solemn singing of the Latin hymn ‘Salve, Regina’ (‘Rejoice, O Queen’) devoted to the Most Holy Mother of God.

Archive Metropolitan Hilarion meets with Iranian ambassador to Russia 3 July 2018 year 16:21 On July 3, 2018, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relation (DECR) and rector of the Ss Cyril and Methodius Institute of Post-graduate Studies (CMI), met at the CMI with the Ambassador of Iran to Russia, Mr. Mehdi Sanaei. From the Iranian side, there were also Dr. Qahraman Soleimani; Mr. Hassan Shahhosseini, counsellor of the Iranian embassy; Mr. Mostafa Eqbal Dust, protocol staff member; and interpreter Hossein Behjuyan. The Moscow Patriarchate was represented by Rev. Dimitry Safonov, DECR secretary for interreligious relations and CMI academic secretary; M. Palacio, director for the CMI public relations and protocol; and I. Kashitsyn, DECR secretariat for interreligious relations. Metropolitan Hilarion warmly welcomed the guest, pointing to this involvement in the academic sphere. He said that the peoples of Russia and Iran have encountered common challenges and have an experience to share. DECR vice-chairman meets with diplomats of EU member states March 18, 2013 On March 14, 2013, Hegumen Philaret (Bulekov), a vice-chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, met with EU countries’ deputy ambassadors in Russia, at the residence of the head of the EU delegation to Russia. It was a monthly conference of the second persons in the EU diplomatic missions, to which prominent political, public and cultural figures are traditionally invited. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Michael Webb, deputy head of the EU delegation to Russia. During the talk, which was held in a friendly atmosphere, Father Philaret familiarized the European diplomats with the reforms carried out in the administrative-territorial governance of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Church’s social service, the teaching of basic religious cultures and secular ethics in Russian public schools, the participation of the Moscow Patriarchate in interreligious and inter-confessional dialogue and the situation of Christians in the Middle East and North Africa. St. Mary Magdalene Church under construction in Madrid has its cupola and cross blessed Madrid, February 12, 2013 On February 7, 2013, Bishop Nestor of Chersonese blessed the first cupola and the cross for St. Mary Magdalene church under construction in Madrid, the website of the Diocese of Chersonese reports. Services were held at the former furniture production facility. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, a Foundation of the Nativity of Christ was registered with the Spanish Ministry of Culture. It was led by the rector of the parish, Rev. Andrey Kordochkin. The Board of Patrons included Archbishop Mark of Yegorievsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s office for institutions abroad, Bishop Nestor of Chersonese and Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, who lives in Madrid. The official permission to build the church was granted on October 5, 2011. In Autumn 2011, Archbishop Mark of Yegorievsk and Bishop Nestor of Chersonese blessed the foundation stone of the future church, and the construction work began. In Autumn 2012, Patriarch Kirill gave his blessing upon the dedication of the new church to St. Mary Magdalene Equal-to-the-Apostles so that continuity could be restored with the parish that existed in the Spanish capital in the 19 th century. According to the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate, the construction work is expected to be completed in April 2013. El elogium, como era costumbre en algunos de los informes administrativos, estaba un tanto amañado. Quien conociese la realidad de los sucesos acaecidos en Jerusalén, podía advertir que el tribuno Lysias no decía nada sobre cómo él había mandado encadenar a Pablo y que iba a azotarlo sin juicio previo, aunque de hecho no llegase a hacerlo, ya que Pablo invocó el derecho de ciudadanía romana. Pero en lo sustancial el informe era correcto, e incluso respetuoso; ya que no llamaba a Pablo un anthropos, un hombre cualquiera, sino aner, un varón, lo cual denota una cierta estima. Félix, al recibir el informe y enterarse de que Pablo era natural de la provincia de Cilicia, ordenó que el prisionero fuera custodiado en el Pretorio de Herodes, en espera de que sus acusadores bajasen de Jerusalén. El llamado Pretorio de Herodes era en realidad el palacio que Herodes se había mandado construir para su residencia, pero que se llamaba pretorio porque allí residía de hecho el procurador romano. Este palacio formaba parte de las construcciones monumentales con las que Herodes el Grande enriqueció la nueva ciudad, construida sobre el emplazamiento de la antigua Torre de Estratón. La nueva ciudad, que su constructor llamó Cesárea en honor de su protector, César Augusto, tenía un circo, un teatro (cuyas ruinas todavía se conservan), un palacio para la residencia real y un templo dedicado a Augusto, en el que se levantaban dos estatuas, dedicadas una al emperador y otra a Roma, que, al decir de Josefo, emulaban al Júpiter Olímpico y a la Juno de Argos. Completaban la ciudad un acueducto, que traía las aguas del Monte Carmelo, avenidas, cloacas y sobre todo un puerto protegido por imponentes escolleras artificiales, sobreadornadas de estatuas, que hacía a Josefo compararlo al Píreo de Atenas. En esta ciudad se va a desarrollar la vida de Pablo durante casi dos años. Y más adelante Cesárea se convertirá en el centro más importante de la vida cristiana de Palestina. En ella, a finales del siglo II se celebrará un concilio, y brillarán las luminarias de la teología y de la historia llamados Orígenes y Eusebio.

De las cuatro capas superiores, el estrato I contiene las ruinas de la dominación persa y babilónica. El rey persa Ciro destruyó en el año 539 antes de J.C. el poderío de Babilonia. El rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia había conquistado medio siglo antes, es decir, en el año 597, Siria y Palestina. Los muros de un palacio de esa época, de una solidez desacostumbrada, se conservaron. El estrato II hace surgir, como testimonios de la dominación asiria, las ruinas de un palacio de una época correspondiente al siglo VII antes de J.C. Tiglatpileser III sometió la Palestina en el año 733 antes de J.C. El estrato III y el estrato IV representan la época israelita. Se encuentran dos sellos con letras hebraicas antiguas de los cuales uno lleva la siguiente inscripción: «Shema, siervo de Jeroboam.» Jeroboam I fue el primer soberano de Israel cuando se dividió el reino, del 926 a 907 antes de J.C. Una lápida contiene otro nombre conocido: Scheschonk I, faraón de Egipto. La Biblia lo llama faraón Sesac. Este faraón cayó sobre Palestina en el quinto año del rey Jeroboam, o sea en el año 922 antes de J.C. Después de casi diez años de trabajos de exploración con picos y azadas se penetra en la época del rey Salomón, quien cerró para siempre los ojos cuatro años antes de la caída de Scheschonk, o sea el año 926 antes de J.C. El fondo de la capa de escombros del estrato IV proporciona a los arqueólogos Gordon Loud y P.L.O. Guy y a la posteridad sensacionales sorpresas de la época del rey Salomón. En la época en que vivió este rey se introdujo un nuevo procedimiento en el arte de la construcción de edificios, murallas de protección, etc. En vez de la forma de construcción hasta entonces en uso, se emplearon piedras labradas en las esquinas de los edificios y, a ciertas distancias, en el resto de la obra. En la última capa de escombros del estrato IV se ponen al descubierto las ruinas de una residencia cuya construcción ofrece estas características. Está circundada por un muro rectangular cuya longitud lateral tiene 60 pies. Como protección, en la puerta de acceso había tres pares de pilastras muy juntas. Entradas a una ciudad triplemente asegurada en igual forma las encontraron también los exploradores en Esyon-Guéber y en Lakís. El edificio, de gruesas paredes, desenterrado al mismo tiempo, resulta ser un «almacén de provisiones» una de «las ciudades-almacenes» de Salomón... (1 Re. 9:19). Almacenes de esta clase también se encontraron en Betsam y en Lakís. Meguiddo fue el centro de administración del quinto distrito de Israel bajo el reinado de Salomón. En el propio palacio de Salomón residía junto al «almacén» y era responsable de la entrega de los impuestos de frutos naturales de Taanaq y Meguiddo, un tal «Rana, hijo de Ajilud...» (1 Re. 4:12).

Salomón era indudablemente un monarca progresivo. Sabía atraerse en forma genial a los expertos y a los técnicos extranjeros para adherirlos a sus empresas . Este el secreto del extraordinario y rápido desarrollo, de otra manera inexplicable, que convirtió el sencillo y campesino país de su padre David en un estado económico de primer orden. Aquí hay que buscar, además, el manantial de las riquezas de que nos habla la Biblia. Salomón se aseguró la cooperación de los técnicos en la fusión de metales de Fenicia. A Jiram, un artista procedente de Tiro, le fue confiada la fusión de los objetos del culto (1 Re. 7:13–14). En Esyon-Guéber fundó Salomón una importante empresa marítima. Los hijos de Israel jamás habían navegado por el mar y nada entendían de construcciones navales. Pero los fenicios poseían una práctica y una experiencia de centenares de años. Salomón hizo, pues, venir de Tiro a los constructores navales, así como a los marineros: «Y Jiram envió en la flota a sus súbditos, navegantes, conocedores del mar...» (1 Re. 9:27). La construcción del puerto en el Mar Rojo también se menciona en los documentos de Fenicia. El sacerdote Sanchuniatón escribió la historia. Jiram de Tiro se ofreció a «suministrar al príncipe judío materiales de construcción para erigir un nuevo palacio si quería construir un puerto en el mar Etiópico» y éste «le dio la ciudad y el puerto de Eliota» El rey Salomón se ha construido un palacio, su célebre «casa del bosque del Líbano» (1 Re. 7:1 y sigs.) " ...para lo cual Jiram, rey de Tiro, había mandado a Salomón madera de cedro y de ciprés y cuanto oro quiso» (1 Re. 9:11). La noticia que de este hecho da la Biblia queda ampliada por la siguiente descripción debida al propio Sanchuniatón por lo que hace referencia a la construcción naval. «A pesar de que en las proximidades de este lugar había grandes bosques de palmeras, no había a mano madera de construcción y Joram se vio precisado a trasladar a este lugar la madera necesaria haciendo uso de 8.000 camellos. Con ella se construyó una flota de 10 naves.»

De ello se deduce claramente que Baltasar era príncipe heredero, el segundo hombre de Babilonia. Siendo así, sólo podía ofrecer el tercer puesto en autoridad. El relato del banquete de Baltasar y de la inscripción en la pared reflejan desde el punto de vista profético la situación política de aquella época; en el año 539 antes de J.C., Ciro se dirigió contra Nabonides, derrotando al ejército babilónico. De esta forma estaban contadas las horas del último gran reino de Mesopotamia. «Desciende y siéntate en el polvo, virgen hija de Babilonia; ¡siéntate en la tierra! pues la hija de los caldeos ya no tendrá trono» (Is. 47:1). Los hititas, los kassitas y los asirios habían procurado, muy a menudo, idéntica suerte a la gigantesca ciudad. Pero la presente conquista se sale del molde acostumbrado en los procedimientos guerreros del Antiguo Oriente; no tiene semejanze. Esta vez no se elevan las llamas del incendio detrás de las murallas derruidas, no se arrasa ningún templo ni ningún palacio, no se saquea casa alguna y nadie es degollado ni empalado. El cilindro de arcilla de Ciro explica, en doctrina babilónica, lo que ahora aconteció. «Cuando hice mi entrada pacífica en Babilonia y entre júbilo y aclamaciones subí al palacio de los príncipes, la residencia del soberano Marduk. El gran Señor, hizo que se inclinara el corazón de los babilonios hacia mí mientras yo me ocupaba en honrarle cada día. Mis tropas, diseminadas, deambulaban pacíficamente por Babilonia. No consentí que nadie molestara ni a los sumerios ni a los acadios. Me preocupé mucho del estado interior de Babilonia y de todas sus ciudades. A sus habitantes... los liberé del yugo tal como les convenía. Mejoré sus viviendas arruinadas, les libré de su dolor... Y soy Ciro, rey de todos, el gran rey, el rey poderoso, rey de Babilonia, rey de los sumerios y de los habitantes de Akkad, rey de las cuatro regiones del mundo...» La última frase parece dar a entender que el cronista bíblico conocía el texto del cilindro de arcilla, pues dice: «Así dice Ciro, rey de Persia: El Señor, el Dios de los cielos me ha dado todos los reinos de la Tierra» (2 Par. 36:23).
