Study: Churches with Conservative Theology Have Better Growth Rates      A five-year study has revealed that churches that adhere to more conservative theology tend to have better growth rates. ChristianToday.com reports that the study, called " Theology Matters: Comparing the Traits of Growing and Declining Mainline Protestant Church Attendees and Clergy " was conducted by Canadian researchers who interviewed 2,225 churchgoers and 29 clergy members in the province of Ontario. The study’s lead researcher, David Haskell, noted that the study showed that growing churches, " held more firmly to the traditional beliefs of Christianity and were more diligent in things like prayer and Bible reading.” Haskell further noted that the confidence that comes from having a united core set of beliefs can be attractive to outsiders. Having core doctrines that they view as unchangeable truth “makes them more confident and, to those on the outside looking in, confidence is persuasive all on its own. Confidence mixed with a message that " s uplifting, reassuring or basically positive is an attractive combination. " The study also found a correlation between clergy who read the Bible daily and viewed evangelism as important and the growth of a church. For example, 71 percent of clergy in growing churches read the Bible daily, while only 19 percent of clergy in declining churches did so. Additionally, 100 percent of clergy in growing churches said it was " very important to encourage non-Christians to become Christians,” compared to only 50 percent of clergy in declining churches who said the same. The man who made Moscow from paper: Teacher’s incredible origami models of iconic Russian cathedral Read more/Православие.Ru The man who made Moscow from paper: Teacher’s incredible origami models of iconic Russian cathedral Read more Sergei Tarasov completed his incredible modular origami models of Saint Basil " s Cathedral, Moscow. The art teacher built the replica at home in the Siberian village of Tigritskoye. By Alex Horlock Remarkable: Sergei Tarasov, 42, puts the finishing touches to his incredible modular origami model of Saint Basil " s Cathedral at his home in Tigritskoye. Meet the man who built Moscow… from paper. Sergei Tarasov recently completed this remarkably detailed modular origami models of Saint Basil’s cathedral using folded bits of paper. The school teacher spent the past year meticulously building the incredibly accurate replicas of the historic landmark in the Russian capital with tens of thousands of pieces of paper. The 42-year-old, from the village of Tigritskoye in southern Russia, has plenty to show for all his hard work, as he unveiled the awe-inspiring work he built at home, which stands at 1.5 metres tall. Tarasov said he didn’t even take a sketch of the impressive building, but was still able to produce his glorious interpretations of the cathedral for a Russian arts and crafts festival. The art teacher has been fascinated by the Japanese art form origami for some time, and says that most of his free time is spent cobbling together the modular pieces which make up the parts of his models. Meticulous: Tarasov has spent a year working on the detailed model, even adhering to the bright colour scheme of the beautiful building. He has begun teaching origami to the children at the schools he works at, some 300 miles from the nearest major city, Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. The talented modeller has somehow found the time to build animals like rabbits and roosters, as well as dragons, trains and other buildings. A perfectionist, Tarasov is often forced to disassemble his works midway through building them to make crucial refinements, improving their accuracy and authenticity.

Christian day-care worker fired after refusing to read pro-gay books to children London, April 24, 2014 Sarah Mbuyi A Christian child-care worker has been added to the growing list of workers who are discovering that their faith is no longer tolerated in polite society, she alleges. Sarah Mbuyi, who was employed by Newpark Childcare, a London-based organization, since last April, was terminated following a disciplinary meeting, prompted by a complaint by a lesbian co-worker. Her employers determined that she had harassed her co-worker, which behaviour, they concluded, amounted to ‘gross misconduct.’ During the disciplinary meeting she was asked her opinion on reading books to the children that featured same-sex parents. She stated that she would not be able to do so. It appears that Miss Mbuyi never hid her faith but had had at least a few conversations with the lesbian co-worker about it, even visiting her in the hospital after an accident and giving her a Bible. Mbuyi asserts that she stated her opinion on the Bible’s teaching about homosexuality only after being asked by the co-worker about it. “If I tell you that God is OK with that I am lying to you,” she stated – after being invited to express her opinion by her co-worker, in what she now recognizes was meant to provoke her. Mbuyi had added that God “does love you and says you should come to Him as you are.” At that point, she claims, the co-worker “became emotional and went off to report me to my manager. " She described her disciplinary hearing as “hopelessly one-sided because they put my accuser " s claims to me as fact, without any forewarning and so I wasn " t prepared. It seemed to me they had already made up their minds to justify sacking me, before hearing my side of the story.” Mguyi has charged Newpark Childcare with wrongful dismissal, asserting that she was fired for her religious beliefs. The suit comes just after British Prime Minister David Cameron controversially stated that “we should be more confident about our status as a Christian country, more ambitious about expanding the role of faith-based organisations, and, frankly, more evangelical about a faith that compels us to get out there and make a difference to people " s lives.” The prime minister, however, was the driving force behind the country’s same-sex “marriage” legislation, and has been accused of advocating a “fluffy” version of Christianity. Some people, like Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Centre, are seeing this as a test case for the Prime Minister’s words. The group is representing Miss Mbuyi in the case. “Sharing Biblical truths out of genuine love and concern for colleagues,” definitely meets the litmus test of civil discourse, Williams believes. 7 мая 2014 г.      Vespers begin as usual with hymns about the suffering and death of Christ. After the entrance with the Gospel Book and the singing of Gladsome Light, selections from Exodus, Job, and Isaiah 52 are read. An epistle reading from First Corinthians (1:18-31) is added, and the Gospel is read once more with selections from each of the four accounts of Christ’s crucifixion and burial. The prokeimena and alleluia verses are psalm lines, heard often already in the Good Friday services, prophetic in their meaning: They divided my garments among them and for my raiment they cast lots (Psalm 22:18). My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me (Ps 22:1). Thou hast put me in the depths of the Pit, in the regions dark and deep (Ps 88:6). After more hymns glorifying Christ " s death, while the choir sings the dismissal song of St Simeon, the priest vests fully in his dark-colored robes and incenses the winding-sheet which still lies upon the altar table. Then, after the Our Father, while the people sing the troparion of the day, the priest circles the altar table with the winding-sheet carried above his head and places it into the tomb for veneration by the faithful. The noble Joseph, when he had taken down Thy most pure body from the Tree, wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices, and placed it in a new tomb (Troparion of Holy Saturday). An Amazing Story of Betrayal and Repentance Nun Magdalena (Nekrasova) An Amazing Story of Betrayal and Repentance Nun Magdalena (Nekrasova) I had already left the house when I met Bishop Mstislav at the door. He was head of the Vologda diocese at the time. When he heard that I had come home for two days he began to forcefully persuade me to go the Central House of Culture, where that evening one anti-religious activist was supposed to be giving a talk. This was the former priest, Chertkov. I had no desire whatsoever to go there, especially since my spiritual father had advised me never to listen to or read all that anti-religious nonsense, which only sullies the soul. But the more I resisted the more decisively the bishop insisted that at least one of us needs to hear one of these presentations and know what methods they are using. Finally, I had to submit. Betrayal Then and Now: On Great Wednesday Betrayal Then and Now: On Great Wednesday Why was it necessary to have a traitor? After all, it would seem that tracking down the Savior would have been easy, since He neither hid nor concealed Himself. He could have been located without any trouble. They could have just sent a detachment to seize Him. But, for some reason, it was necessary to have a traitor – so that this frightful act would take place from within. Sergius determined the common type of Russian sanctity for 400 years to come, and when times had changed completely, his worthy successor became St. Seraphim of Sarov. In conclusion and in an attempt to determine St. Sergius’s place in the history of Russian culture and enlightenment, I would like to again remind the reader that we have to do not with a scholar, but with a wise man. That means that he is more an example than an authority—an example not only for emulation, but also as a measuring stick. Teaching throughout his life moderation in all things spiritual and earthly, the saint himself became the measuring stick of our culture. His life allows us to test today’s science, art and schools against their heavenly examples. The results of our measurement will perhaps not be consoling, but there is no need to despair. After all—would that every nation were granted such a measure. Artemy Yermakov Translation by OrthoChristian.com 8 октября 2011 г. St. Andrei Rublev painted the famous icon of the Holy Trinity.
