Sergius determined the common type of Russian sanctity for 400 years to come, and when times had changed completely, his worthy successor became St. Seraphim of Sarov. In conclusion and in an attempt to determine St. Sergius’s place in the history of Russian culture and enlightenment, I would like to again remind the reader that we have to do not with a scholar, but with a wise man. That means that he is more an example than an authority—an example not only for emulation, but also as a measuring stick. Teaching throughout his life moderation in all things spiritual and earthly, the saint himself became the measuring stick of our culture. His life allows us to test today’s science, art and schools against their heavenly examples. The results of our measurement will perhaps not be consoling, but there is no need to despair. After all—would that every nation were granted such a measure. Artemy Yermakov Translation by OrthoChristian.com 8 октября 2011 г. St. Andrei Rublev painted the famous icon of the Holy Trinity. New Book: Noetic Prayer as the Basis of Mission and the Struggle Against Heresy from Uncut Mountain Press A new book entitled Noetic Prayer as the Basis of Mission and the Struggle Against Heresy by Archimandrite Ephraim Triandaphillopoulos is now available for pre-order from Uncut Mountain Press : " The unique Orthodox method of mission succinctly put forward in this book is both tremendously important to the life of the Church in non-Orthodox lands and, unfortunately, largely missing from contemporary missionary work. This present reality makes this book by Archimandrite Ephraim of Siatista all the more important and the need for every Orthodox Christian to read it all the more urgent. " In six short chapters Fr. Ephraim, like a spiritual doctor and specialist in spiritual diseases, dissects the disease of heresy and its cause, offering both as method of cure and cure itself the medicine of noetic prayer. Like a doctor whose knowledge is the culmination of decades and centuries of medical research, Fr. Ephraim does not present his own thinking alone, but rather he draws from the holy fathers and ascetics of every age, including our own, to reveal the path of the Orthodox missionary both as one healed and one healing the brokenness heresy brings. " This book is required reading for every Orthodox missionary, or, rather, every Orthodox Christian, for there is no Christian who does not seek to be made whole and bring wholeness and spiritual health to his neighbor. " Archimandrite Ephraim Triandaphillopoulos is an inspirational and influential preacher and the Protosyngellos (Chancellor) of the diocese of Siatista in Greece. An Excerpt from the Introduction to The Boundless Garden: Selected Short Stories, Volume I/Православие.Ru An Excerpt from the Introduction to The Boundless Garden: Selected Short Stories, Volume I Alexandros Papadiamantis " Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911) was the most important literary figure of nineteenth-century Greece and arguably of modern Greek literature more generally. Through his lively, tender, and profound short stories of the simple lives of the Orthodox faithful of his native island of Skiathos, Papadiamantis reveals a world of organically lived Orthodoxy, largely lost in the disintegrating order of modern life. " (From the forthcoming book by Protecting Veil Press entitled Greece " s Dostoevsky: The Theological Vision of Alexandros Papadiamantis ). I cannot think of a better way succinctly to state why everyone, but especially Orthodox Christians, should read the writings of Alexandros Papadiamandis. I mentioned him recently in the context of the writings of Elder Paisios the Athonite . Now I am very happy to announce this outstanding translation of his short stories. May his wonderful descriptions of " organically lived Orthodoxy " help us to recover a more full and traditional Orthodox way of life. — Patrick Barnes The short stories of Alexandros Papadiamandis are graced with an almost indefinable quality common to all great writers. This quality would seem to derive from an enthralment combined with a certain perplexity, an irresistible pull exerted by the author " s descriptions of a world of beauty and marvels which at the same time is filled with predicaments, human tragedies and humble triumphs. Like his contemporaries in the great European tradition of story-telling, Papadiamandis explores the souls of men and women as they succumb to or struggle against the power of evil — the Raskolnikovs, the Uriah Heeps and the Kareninas — people living on the edge of man " s capacity to deal with evil and who are tragically driven, by an irrational process, to the extremes of human vulnerability.

For him, there wasn’t the slightest separation between the service of a sovereign and the fulfillment of his personal Christian duty. To the end of time, and especially in the latter times, the Church will be tempted by the devil, as Christ was in Gethsemane and on Golgotha: “Come down from the Cross!” “Depart just a little from the demands of man’s greatness, about which Your Gospels speak, become more accessible to all, and we will believe in You. There are situations when it is necessary to do this. Come down from the Cross, and the Church’s affairs will go better.” The main spiritual significance of today’s events—the conclusion drawn from centuries infected by the spirit of Machiavelli and especially the twentieth century—are the ever more successful efforts of the enemy directed at making our “salt lose its flavor”. Just as before the [Bolshevik] Revolution, so also now, the greatest danger consists in “outward appearances”. Many believe in God, in His Providence, many strive to restore an Orthodox monarchy, but in their hearts they rely on earthly power: on “horses and chariots” (Ps. 18:8). They say, let the cross be as a beautiful symbol… Meanwhile we will set up our own earthly kingdom, according to our earthly understanding. But the martyric blood of the holy Tsar rebukes the apostates now, just as it did then. Азбука веры Православная библиотека блаженный Аврелий Августин The City of God Пожертвовать Вход блаженный Аврелий Августин The City of God Источник The City of God (Book XIV) The City of God (Book XVI) Скачать epub pdf The City of God (Book XV) Having treated in the four preceding books of the origin of the two cities, the earthly and the heavenly, Augustine explains their growth and progress in the four books which follow; and, in order to do so, he explains the chief passages of the sacred history which bear upon this subject. In this fifteenth book he opens this part of his work by explaining the events recorded in Genesis from the time of Cain and Abel to the deluge. Chapter 1.– Of the Two Lines of the Human Race Which from First to Last Divide It. Of the bliss of Paradise, of Paradise itself, and of the life of our first parents there, and of their sin and punishment, many have thought much, spoken much, written much. We ourselves, too, have spoken of these things in the foregoing books, and have written either what we read in the Holy Scriptures, or what we could reasonably deduce from them. And were we to enter into a more detailed investigation of these matters, an endless number of endless questions would arise, which would involve us in a larger work than the present occasion admits. We cannot be expected to find room for replying to every question that may be started by unoccupied and captious men, who are ever more ready to ask questions than capable of understanding the answer. Yet I trust we have already done justice to these great and difficult questions regarding the beginning of the world, or of the soul, or of the human race itself. This race we have distributed into two parts, the one consisting of those who live according to man, the other of those who live according to God. And these we also mystically call the two cities, or the two communities of men, of which the one is predestined to reign eternally with God, and the other to suffer eternal punishment with the devil. This, however, is their end, and of it we are to speak afterwards. At present, as we have said enough about their origin, whether among the angels, whose numbers we knownot, or in the two first human beings, it seems suitable to attempt an account of their career, from the time when our two first parents began to propagate the race until all human generation shall cease. For this whole time or world-age, in which the dying give place and those who are born succeed, is the career of these two cities concerning which we treat.

Church leaders to deliver anti-gay marriage letters/Православие.Ru Church leaders to deliver anti-gay marriage letters June 16, 2012 Leaders of Sydney " s major Christian churches will make a coordinated appeal against same-sex marriage straight from the pulpit this weekend in a bid to rally opposition before the federal parliamentary vote, reports local Australian news agency, The Guardian . Statements from Anglican, Catholic and Greek Orthodox church leaders will be read out or distributed at services, stressing the need to head off any change to the current definition of marriage. The move comes as proposed same-sex marriage legislation is due to be debated for the first time in the lower house on Monday, when a social policy and legal affairs committee inquiry report into two private members bills amending the Marriage Act will be tabled. The Anglican Archbishop for the diocese of Sydney, Peter Jensen, writes to parishioners that the " " parliamentary success of this revolutionary redefinition is not inevitable, " " and calls on Christians who support the traditional definition of marriage to make their views known to federal MPs. " " I urge you to pray about this matter and write speedily to members of parliament expressing your support for marriage as at present defined and your concern that more be done to support and strengthen marriage and family life, as properly understood, in our nation, " " he said. Dr Jensen " s letter states that it is beyond the power of Parliament to change the definition of marriage, " " although its laws should recognise the true definition and support it " " . Catholic congregations across Sydney will receive a similar pastoral letter from church leaders including Archbishop, Cardinal George Pell, tomorrow. " " Marriage is more than having one " s love for another legally recognised, " " The Catholic Weekly quotes Cardinal Pell, and auxiliary bishops Julian Porteous, Terry Brady and Peter Comensoli as stating. " " It has been protected and supported by the law because governments have recognised its contribution to the good of society. " "

But does this mean that Christ’s words have no relevance to the current debate about capital punishment? Far from it. For it seems to me that in this debate two groups face off against each other, staring uncomprehendingly and shouting loudly across a great divide. Some scream for the execution of the offender with hatred and a lust for vengeance in their heart, while others yell that such execution would be no better than the murder it would avenge. The yelling and the self-righteousness are signs that both groups have become entangled and lost in the heat of the moment. Justice indeed that demands that a murderer be executed (though mercy may sometimes be granted), just as it demands that violent assault or rape be punished by incarceration. But the individuals involved in carrying out such sentences as well as the victims of the crimes must take care to keep lust for vengeance far from their hearts. The person justly punished, either by incarceration or execution, is still loved by God. Hangmen may justly hang, just as soldiers and police officers sometimes may justly kill. But they may not delight in it. We all have seen the statue of Justice holding her scales and wearing a blindfold so that she cannot be subject to partiality or bribery. That blindfold should obscure her tears as well, for one may well shed tears even when administering just punishment. All punishment for crime, whether execution or incarceration, represents a defeat for society, and should be administered with sorrow—and for Christians, with prayer for all, perpetrator as well as victim.
