Jordanville, NY: Metropolitan Jonah leads Divine Services for Pentecost in Holy Trinity Monastery Jordanville, NY, May 31, 2015      On Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st of May, the clergy and brethren of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY celebrated the great feast of Holy Pentecost – the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. Leading the All-Night Vigil on Saturday evening and the Divine Liturgy and Great Vespers on Sunday morning was His Eminence, Metropolitan Jonah (former Primate of Orthodox Church in America). Co-serving with His Eminence were Archimandrites Luke (Murianka; monastery abbot) and Nektarios (Harding), Archpriest Michael Taratuchin (rector of St. John of Kronstadt Memorial Church in Utica, NY), Hieromonks Theophylact (Clapper-DeWell), Cyprian (Alexandrou), Moses (Borges), and Gabriel (Astrahankine), Priest Andrei Rudenko (cleric of Holy Virgin Nativity Church in Albany, NY), Protodeacons Joseph Jarostchuk (cleric of St. John Memorial Church) and Alexander Jarostchuk (cleric of Holy Epiphany Church in Boston, MA), Hierodeacon Seraphim (Nikoloski), and monastery Deacons Andrei Psarev, Andrew Doubleday, and Peter Markevich. The monastic and seminary choir (including Priest Ephraim Willmarth) sang under the direction of Reader Nicholas Kotar.      The three Kneeling Prayers were read by Metropolitan Jonah, Fr. Luke, and Fr. Theophylact. Upon completion of the service, Metropolitan Jonah addressed the faithful with a sermon, in which he said, in part: " We celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit… so that we might be united to Him, and He to us; so that He might dwell in us, and we in Him; so that our union with God might be fulfilled and completed. So often in our culture, we think of God as somewhere out there, somewhere distant, and the more secular our culture, the further God is from this reality. They have no concept that God permeates reality, that God permeates this existence, that God permeates the creation. The sending of the Holy Spirit is a type and a sign, as well as the reality, of God’s sending down the Holy Spirit upon all flesh: first of all upon us, who are believers, so that our faith might be ignited, our knowledge of God might be kindled, and our awareness of the presence of God throughout this creation might be enabled, and strengthened, and energized, so that our whole life might become an act of awareness of God. " Click here to view Metropolitan Jonah’s sermon. Tomorrow, the feast day of the Holy Spirit, Metropolitan Hilarion will arrive at Holy Trinity Monastery to lead the patronal feast day.      2 июня 2015 г. Over the Christmas recess, Assistant Professor of Homiletics and Rhetoric The Rev. Dr. Sergius Halvorsen and third-year M.Div. seminarian Tristan Gall traveled to Dallas, TX, to participate in the National Festival of Young Preachers. Sponsored by the Academy of Preachers, the National Festival attracted more than one hundred young preachers along with their mentors and evaluators. This is the fifth year faculty and seminarians from St. Vladimir " s have attended the festival. (Read about 2012 , 2013 , and 2014. ) During the three-day event held on the campus of Southern Methodist University at the Perkins School of Theology, each young preacher delivered a sermon on one of several biblical texts that followed the festival theme " Tell me a Story. " In addition to delivering their sermons, young preachers also received valuable feedback from evaluators, who often hailed from a Christian tradition different from that of the preacher. Father Sergius, who served as a mentor, commented, " As a teacher of homiletics, I find it extremely helpful to interact with preachers who come from different Christian traditions. It enables me to understand how people from various backgrounds hear preaching, what they look for, and what they expect. This enriches my work at St. Vladimir " s tremendously, as we seek to engage the world with Orthodox Christianity. " Fr. Sergius served as an evaluator for Joshua Scott, one of the young preachers at the Festival Two St. Vladimir " s Seminary alumni also attended the festival. Andrew Boyd, chairperson of the OCA Department of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry, preached, and Archimandrite Gerasim, rector of St. Seraphim of Sarov Cathedral (Orthodox Church in America) in Dallas, attended several of the sessions. Venerable Anthony the Abbot of Siya, Novgorod Commemorated on December 7 Saint Anthony of Siya, in the world Andrew, was born into a family of rich farmers in the village of Kekhta near the North Dvina river. In childhood he received a fine education, read much and learned iconography. After the death of his parents, Andrew went to Novgorod, and for five years worked for a boyar [nobleman] there. He later married, but his wife died after a year. Then Andrew decided to devote himself to monasticism. He distributed his goods to the poor and as a wanderer came to the Pachomiev wilderness monastery at the River Kena. Saint Pachomius tonsured him with the name Anthony. Soon he was ordained a hieromonk, and Anthony, with the blessing of the igumen, celebrated the divine services by himself. He went out with the other monks of the monastery to work for the monastery’s needs. Out of love for solitude Saint Anthony eventually left the Pachomiev wilderness, after choosing two companions from the monastic brethren, and he settled upon Mikhailov Island, on the one side washed by the River Sii, and on the other, by encircling lakes. In this harsh frontier within the dense thickets Anthony built a chapel in 1520. But to clear the forest required difficult work, and Anthony’s companions began to grumble against him. Then quite unexpectedly an unknown man furnished them with the means of subsistence, offering money for good measure. The Siya monastery became famous, and inhabitants of surrounding villages often visited it. And again Saint Anthony, taking one disciple, withdrew to a still more remote place on Lake Palun. There, in a solitary cell, he dwelt for three years. When the igumen Theoctistus refused to guide the Siya monastery any longer, the brethren tried to persuade Saint Anthony to return to them. He finally acceded to the request of the monks, again became igumen and piously guided the monastery until his death in the year 1556, when he was seventy-nine years old. Troparion — Tone 1 You renounced the world in favor of the spirit,/Seeking the one God with your whole heart, O Anthony./You retreated to a far wilderness, near waters,/In tears and labors living the angelic life./You gathered a multitude of monks in your wisdom./Visit them and cease not to implore the Holy Trinity/To deliver us from evil/And to save our souls! Kontakion — Tone 8 From your youth you exhausted your flesh by fasting and prayer,/And taking up your cross, you followed Christ./Having joyfully completed your journey to heaven,/You stand with the saints before the Holy Trinity./Now visit your flock and remember those who honor you,/That all the faithful may cry out in thanksgiving:/Rejoice, O wise and righteous Anthony, guide of desert-dwellers! I read a great deal, trying to find an answer. I thought that one could find truth through art. But one day, as I was passing by a hospital, I thought that maybe one of the ways to find the answer to this angst-ridden question could lie in working in a hospital, side by side with people and their sufferings. So I decided to be an orderly. Need I say, that this is not Positive science, but intuitive morals? What else indeed can we make of his remarkable statement, that moral rules are to be laid down as self-evident and beyond discussion; inasmuch as, by a true knowledge of ourselves, we read them in every affection, thought, habit. and action, with а conviction as complete as the strictest demonstrations could give, – a conviction arising simply from their intimate relation to the noblest instincts. Yet more explicitly he adds, that the reason why we must not rely on proof to produce moral convictions is, that proof is necessarily objective, fetched from observation and judgment exercised on others; whereas appreciation, to be moral, must be subjective, drawn from the inward consciousness of our own character. These propositions alight upon momentous truths; but it is curious to receive them from one who habitually ridicules the «pretended possibility» of self-knowledge, amounting as they do to an explicit assertion of intuitive and psychological morals. 333 Еще в 1802 году Ламарк падал сочинение Recherches sur l’organisation des corps vivants et particulièrement sur son origine, sur les causes de ses développements et des progrès de sa composition… Paris. В этом сочинении он высказал взгляд, что животные виды произошли один от другого. Но взгляд был высказан обще. Подробное развитие его было дано в Philosophie zoologique. Эта книга и считается положившею начало новой эпохе в истории развития взглядов о происхождении животного мира.

If you read this very carefully you will see that the EP is trying to deal with the “problem” they face when not all Patriarchs agree on an issue or when a Patriarch refuses to attend in protest. Since a Patriarchs absence could lead to dissolution he is trying to somehow get around this, so that HIS will be done, and nothing interferes. He is qualifying his beliefs by stating that past councils had absentee members and still went forward, and that the absentee Patriarchs retroactively agreed, and although this is true it usually was preceded by anger, frustration breaking of communion in protest to the fact that councils went forward without their presence, and the healing of these “schisms” would sometime take years to fully repair. Is this what the Patriarch wants to do here? Paok 31 января 2016, 22:00 b) The matter of inviting observers to the Holy and Great Council: Why do we need to have heretics present at this event that concerns the Church of Christ? Note his logic: “It should be noted that, during the sessions of the Second Vatican Council, our Church was invited to and did send observers.” Although this is true it should also be noted that the latins also had “observers” from organizations like International Association for Liberal Christianity, World Convention of Churches of Christ, Friends World Committee and many other disgraceful heretical institution. In more recent events the pope has invited representatives from Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism etc. Why should we change our traditions and holy practices to follow the ways of heretical communities, as if they should somehow be our standard? Secondly, he states that these observers will not be able to vote, but one must ask the questions why are they even there? How will they influence those who can vote? This event will have grave consequences on the Church of Christ and we do not need outsiders influencing its outcome.

And why did this sense develop more strongly in the Latin West than in the Greek East, in spite of the fact that some of the earliest reflections on the nature of the person belong to the Orthodox Christian world? In this searching investigation, Stelios Ramfos explores the roots of the modern debate on the person and concludes that the preoccupation of the Byzantine Greeks with eternity inhibited them from developing a fruitful sense of interiority.
