| Colorado parish converts coffee kiosk into mobile chapel Moscow, June 2, 2017 Photo: dowoca.org A thriving Colorado parish has found a way to introduce and make the Orthodox Church accessible to even more people, who might otherwise never have any contact with the ancient, Orthodox faith. Holy Theophany Church in Colorado Spring’s new mobile chapel made its public debut over Memorial Day weekend at the local street fair, reports the site of the OCA Diocese of the West . The story of the chapel began when parish rector Fr. Anthony Karbo spotted a mobile coffee kiosk for sale on the side of the highway. Its eight sides and construction from stone and timber with a copper roof reminded him of roadside chapels he had seen in Greece, and he began to envision a higher calling for the little kiosk. With the help of local artists from Greer Studios, the tiny coffee shop was transfigured into an Orthodox chapel on wheels. The idea “to be present at public gatherings where Orthodoxy might be an exotic mystery to most passersby” came to fruition at the “Territory Days” street fair, which saw many curious guests attracted by the glistening gold dome. Priests and parishioners were on hand to interact with the people and answer their questions. Children and adults alike entered the chapel, some lighting candles and even venerating the icons. There were also several display tables outside the chapel, with icons, censers and incense, and prayer ropes. Photo: stinnocent.com The new mobile chapel is reminiscent of another Orthodox mission on wheels. For many years, Fr. Michael Furry of St. Innocent of Alaska Church in Roanoke, VA, could be spotted driving his mobile Orthodox bookstore, cupola and all, which arose out a 1969 Chevrolet van, formerly used to deliver potato chips. The Orthodox Church’s prayers “transport us to another understanding of life,” Fr. Michael said, in an interview with the Roanoke Times , and so his mobile bookstore and chapel also transported Orthodoxy to many souls thirsting for Truth. Fr. Presentation topics should relate to the theme of the conference—“Church Music and Icons: Windows to Heaven.” The language of the conference will be English. The conference, which is open to everyone interested in the theme in particular or liturgical music in general, will feature a variety of educational presentations and an excursion to the monasteries of Valamo and Lintula. It is expected that participants from around the world will attend. Possible paper topics include Church music as icon, the aesthetic and historical parallels between church music and icons, icons in hymnography, and hymnography in icons. Interdisciplinary contributions—art history, iconography and hymnology—are also encouraged and welcome. Proposals should be sent by March 1, 2013 to the Society using the on-line form available here . All papers will be published at the conclusion of the conference. | Title to Historic Church Lands Returned to Alaska SYOSSET, NY [OCA] In an historic vote at its regular fall session here September 20-23, 2010, the Metropolitan Council of the Orthodox Church in America voted unanimously to return title to the ownership of Orthodox Christians in Alaska all real estate the national Church has held in trust since 1867. The decision was immediately blessed by the Lesser Synod of Bishops. According to the Treaty of Cession, which placed Alaska under American rule, ownership of the land and buildings was to be retained by the Orthodox Christians who worshiped therein. Legal title, however, was deeded to the resident Orthodox Bishop, to be held in trust for them. In 1870, when the Church " s headquarters were moved to San Francisco, the deeds went south as well. In 1904, the Archbishop " s see once again was moved to New York City, where the title has remained -- until today. In a 1923 letter written in response to an appeal by Father Andrew P. Kashevarov, the founder of the Alaska Territorial (now State) Historical Library and Museum, Judge James Wickersham of Juneau suggested that it would be prudent for the local bishop to hold the titles, rather than the head of the Church in New York. At the Metropolitan Council " s spring 2010 session, Archpriest Michael Oleksa, a member of the Metropolitan Council from the Diocese of Alaska, brought forth Wickersham " s suggestion and proposed that title to all Alaska Church lands be returned. Citing that it was the legal and fiduciary responsibility of the Council to know exactly what lands and funds were involved in such a move, Judge Ray Lanier, a Council member from the Diocese of the South, insisted that a complete listing of the holdings and their potential value be presented before any final decision be made, thereby tabling Father Michaels motion. Professor Lanier then spent an exhausting week in Anchorage, studying the records compiled by Ms. Grayce Oakley, the Diocese of Alaska " s lands secretary, who had spent over four years compiling, cataloging and becoming thoroughly familiar with all the deeds and their histories. Ms. Oakley " s work enabled the Church to act with proper diligence and care. Today -- 87 years later -- the Orthodox Church in America heeded Judge Wickersham " s wise counsel. In its decision, the Metropolitan Council specifically thanked Ms. Oakley, a Presbyterian, for her dedication and commitment in helping to preserve this heritage for Orthodox Alaska and future generations. On Friday, October 5, Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov) presented an English translation of his book, Everyday Saints, at the Library of Congress. The book has become a best-seller in Russia (1.1 million copies sold so far). Fr Tikhon noted that all proceeds from the sale of his book will go towards the construction of a church on Bolshaya Lyubanka dedicated to the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. “We want to build a beautiful, bright church, marking the victory of good over evil and brutality,” said Fr Tikhon. “We want to complete this church by February 2017, the centennial of the beginning of those fateful days. Today there are many memorials devoted to the period, but many of them are gloomy, dark, depressing. This is not the way to view its history.” On Saturday, October 6, Sretensky Choir sang Divine Liturgy at St Nicholas Cathedral of the Orthodox Church in America. Officiating were His Eminence Archbishop Justinian of Naro-Fominsk, Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, and His Grace Bishop Melchisedek of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania of the Orthodox Church in America, along with representatives of many other Local Churches. At the end of the service, St John the Baptist Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia was given a gift of a portion of the relics of St Herman of Alaska from the OCA. The relic was thankfully received by the Cathedral’s rector, Protopriest Victor Potapov. That evening, James Billington, the Librarian of Congress, hosted a reception in honor of Fr Tikhon, the Prior of Sretensky Monastery in Moscow. Among the guests was Fr Victor. After dinner, Sretensky Choir performed their first concert of liturgical music on the present tour in an overfilled auditorium of the Library of Congress. | Pennsylvania: Archimandrite Athanasy (Mastalski) reposed in the Lord Source: Eastern American Diocese (ROCOR) February 6, 2016 On Friday, February 6, Archimandrite Athanasy (Mastalski), longtime rector of Joy of All Who Sorrow Church in Philadelphia, PA, reposed in the Lord. He was 69 years old. Fr. Athanasy was born on June 24, 1946 in Philadelphia. In 1975, he was ordained a deacon, and in the following year a priest, by Archbishop Nikon (Rklitsky). In December 1978, Metropolitan Philaret performed Fr. Athanasy’s monastic tonsure. Hieromonk (and later Abbot) Athanasy led Joy of All Who Sorrow parish in Philadelphia for many years; he served in Holy Protection Church in New Brunswick, NJ and St. Nicholas Church in Red Bank, NJ, as well as at the convents in the Holy Land – Holy Ascension on the Mount of Olives and the Gethsemane Convent. In December 2005, Metropolitan Laurus elevated Fr. Athanasy to the rank of archimandrite. For many years, Archimandrite Athanasy was the guardian of the myrrh-streaming icon of the Holy Righteous Anna, Mother of the Most Holy Theotokos, with which he traveled to a multitude of churches and monasteries in the dioceses of the Russian Church Abroad. The holy image was painted in the Mount of Olives Convent by Nun Mastridia, and began to stream myrrh in the United States. It was well known that the future priest fell in his childhood and was very badly hurt; he prayed to St. Anna, promising that, when he had the opportunity and the funds, he would order an icon of St. Anna. Archimandrite Athanasy spent the final years of his earthly life at St. Tikhon’s Monastery (OCA) in South Canaan, PA, where the services for the departed will be held. Tuesday, February 9 – Vespers & Matins at 16:30. Panihida – at 19:00. Wednesday, February 10 – Meeting of Metropolitan Tikhon, Divine Liturgy – at 9:00. The funeral will be served according to the monastic rite at 11:30 AM. Through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos and the prayers of the Holy Righteous Anna, may the Lord grant blessed repose to the soul of His newly departed servant, the Archimandrite Athanasy, in the mansions of the righteous, and make his memory to be eternal! | 40TH Anniversary of St. Herman " s canonization to be celebrated during annual Spruce Island Pilgrimage August 9/Православие.Ru 40TH Anniversary of St. Herman " s canonization to be celebrated during annual Spruce Island Pilgrimage August 9 Kodiak Island, AK, August 5, 2010 [OCA] St. Herman of Alaska Hundreds of Orthodox Christian pilgrims are expected to flock to Spruce Island, AK on Monday, August 9, 2010, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Herman of Alaska, one of the first -- and surely the most beloved -- Orthodox Christian missionaries to serve the people of Alaska. Staff and volunteers at Holy Resurrection Cathedral in nearby Kodiak coordinate the annual event, which draws Orthodox and non-Orthodox visitors from across North America into the dense spruce forest in which Saint Herman lived and prayed, struggled, and performed miracles from 1808 until his death in 1837. Pilgrims will have the opportunity to walk the paths Saint Herman walked, drink from a healing spring, venerate icons hung on the trunks of aged spruce trees, and attend a hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Saints Sergius and Herman of Valaam Chapel, built in 1895 on the site where the Saint Herman was buried. The Liturgy this year will be celebrated by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America and His Grace, Bishop Benjamin of San Francisco and the West, Locum Tenens of the Diocese of Alaska. Following the Liturgy on Spruce Island, pilgrims will enjoy a picnic on the beach at Monk’s Lagoon. Upon their return to Kodiak, they will enjoy a festival in Sargent Park near Holy Resurrection Cathedral, with entertainment provided by staff and students of Saint Innocent Academy. A monk of Valaam Monastery in Russian Karelia, Saint Herman came to Alaska in 1794 to serve the native Alutiiq people and Russian fur traders. A tireless laborer as a simple un-ordained monk, Saint Herman established the Orthodox Church in Kodiak, defended the people against arguably outrageous treatment by Russian colonial officials, and cared for orphaned children on Spruce Island. He lived out the last 30 years of his life on Spruce Island as a hermit. During this time he pioneered gardening, cared for those in need, and worked many miracles of healing and protection. At his death, a column of light was seen throughout the region rising from the forest to the heavens. |

Campaigns have also been held in the past in Russia and Georgia. Information on forming a new campaign is also available on the site.
