John Anthony McGuckin Liturgical Books JOHN A. MCGUCKIN The priest and cantor need a veritable library of books in order to complete all the ceremonies, prayer services, rituals, and blessings of the Orthodox Church, so rich is its liturgical tradition, and so varied the range of ceremonies it has established and adapted over the ages of its existence. There are several small but significant variations of style and form among the different language families of Orthodoxy, especially in relation to liturgical customs prevalent among the Greeks and the Slavs, which grew up in the course of the last millennium. English-language translations of Orthodox liturgical texts tend to fall between the three ritual forms most common today in the United States of America: that of the Antiochene patriarchate; the ritual of the Russian Church as adapted for use by the Orthodox Church in America (OCA); and the English language publications of the Greek Orthodox archdiocese, which are generally straightforward translations of the ceremonies of the Great Church of Constantinople. Many of the most important liturgical books have separate entries in this encyclopedia. Chief among them are the Euchologion (altar book for the liturgy and sacraments); the Hieratikon (priest’s parts for the services); and the Horologion (book of texts and rubrics for the celebration of the services of the Hours). Among the Russians the collection of special services and blessings that might be celebrated outside of the church is known as the Trebnik (Book of Needs) and there are English versions of it in one volume or several volumes (covering a greater array of services). The Antiochene patriarchate has issued a Liturgikon in English that covers aspects of the Euchologion and the Trebnik. The special texts and prayers for the liturgical services are also to be found in the literature that follows the monthly calendar of saints, and takes its name from this as the (twelve- volume) Menaion. The book known as the Triodion contains the liturgical texts proper to Lent, and the Pentekostarion has those proper to the Paschal season up to Pentecost. The third book in this series, containing the normal range of texts for Sundays of the year, takes its name from the eight “Tones” that are used to attribute proper texts to various parts of the weekly services, namely the Oktoechos. IOCC Responds To Humanitarian Needs Of Gaza Families November 21, 2012 Yusef and his grandsons proudly tend the tomato crop daily in his newly rehabilitated greenhouse. The proceeds from the sale of the tomatoes will help support his family and provide seed money to grow more produce. Unrest in the region could impact families like Yusef’s who are trying to break free of the cycle of poverty that engulfs so many in Gaza. photo: Rada Tierney/IOCC The rising hostilities between Israel and Gaza has claimed at least 100 lives – more than half of them Palestinian civilians – and left 600 more injured in Gaza. While the world watches to see whether the tension continues to escalate, International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) is on the ground in Gaza, assessing the most urgent humanitarian needs of Palestinian families caught in the conflict. Country Director, Sam Dunlap, oversees IOCC field offices in both Jerusalem and in the Gaza Strip. Dunlap says access to food, medical care for the injured, and trauma counseling for children that have been exposed to the violence are quickly emerging as the most pressing problems facing families in Gaza. “Our staff in Gaza is canvassing the affected areas, assessing the immediate needs of those most severely impacted by the conflict – families with small children, female-headed households, and the elderly.” IOCC has a history of humanitarian service in Gaza, providing agricultural training and support to impoverished families in the region since 1997, and delivering emergency humanitarian relief to Palestinians following a military conflict in 2009. “We pray that the looming humanitarian crisis can be avoided without further loss of life,” said Dunlap. “Regardless of what transpires, IOCC staff stands ready to respond to the immediate and long-term humanitarian needs of affected families in Gaza.” ABOUT INTERNATIONAL ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHARITIES IOCC is the official humanitarian aid agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in North and Central America. Since its inception in 1992, IOCC has delivered more than million in relief and development programs to families and communities in 50 countries. St. Alexis, a Resolute Zealot for Orthodoxy/Православие.Ru St. Alexis, a Resolute Zealot for Orthodoxy Archimandrite Luke (Murianka) " On May 6, 2014 Archimandrite Luke delivered a lecture at St. Mary " s Cathedral (OCA) in Minneapolis, MN. The talk was part of an annual Saint Alexis (Toth) lecture series sponsored by the St. Mary " s Boriss-Hansen Committee. St. Mary " s plays a significant role in the history of Orthodoxy in America. The Cathedral altar was consecrated by St. Patriarch Tikhon and St. Alexis was the pastor of the church. The parish hall, next to the church, is located where the first Russian Orthodox seminary once stood. St. Alexis is one of the great missionary confessors of the Orthodox Church and is lauded as such in Father Luke " s talk. " Text of Archimandrite Luke " s Lecture: St/Alexis (Toth) St. Alexis, a Resolute Zealot for Orthodoxy In light of contemporary ecumenical exchanges, dialogues, theological commissions, and dramatic statements frequently confusing and scandalizing the Orthodox faithful, we need to pause a moment and refresh our memory with the image of a prophet zealous for the Lord " s truth found in the person of St Alexis, who not only resembles an Old Testament prophet but is equal in spirit to great luminaries such as Sts. Athanatious the Great, Cyril of Alexandria, Photios the Great, and Averky of Jordanville. Some might favor a different reading of his life, by excusing his words and actions as the result of a misunderstanding, an overreaction to circumstances, which we now might better understand through the prism of unfortunate historical events. What really inspired Fr. Alexis " actions and how would he would have reacted to the presentation of the facts of his life through our compromising contemporary attitudes, may be discerned from his life and writings. “St. Alexis was born in a Carpatho-Rusyn family of priests, both his father and brother were priests and his uncle was a bishop. Like most Carpatho-Rusyns of the time, the Toths were Eastern Rite-Uniate Catholics. After completing his seminary education, he married Rosalie Mihalich, the daughter of a priest in 1878, was ordained to the priesthood and assigned as the second priest in a Greek Catholic parish. While serving there, his wife and their only child died. The critical time of Father Toth " s life began with his arrival in America in November, 1889 to become the first pastor of the new Greek Catholic church in Minneapolis. Five weeks after his arrival, Father Toth met the local Roman Catholic bishop, Archbishop John Ireland. Learning that Father Toth had been married, the Archbishop refused to recognize him as a legitimate Catholic priest and forbade him to function as a priest anywhere in the Diocese.

The opening of the memorial plaque is timed to coincide with the first visit to Russia of Metropolitan Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington, Metropolitan of All America and Canada (Orthodox Church in America). The Metropolitan served a Liturgy and a solemn prayer service, blessed the memorial plaque dedicated to the anniversary of establishment of Orthodoxy in the USA. The visit of the Metropolitan was blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The author of the memorial plaque is a famous sculptor Gregory Pototsky. The unique bronze bas-relief depicts the history of the establishment of Orthodoxy in Alaska and includes bas-relief portraits of the empress Catherine, the merchant Shelikhov, depictions of monks from Valaam Monastery, and a map of the USA. The idea for an American spiritual mission was expressed by the merchant G.I. Shelikhov, who promised Catherine II to build churches and schools in the colonies and provided the funds to do so. Orthodoxy was brought to the American continent through the Aleutian islands and Alaska by the first Russian missionaries in 1794. Eight members of the first Russian Orthodox mission arrived to America on board the ship, " Three Holy Hierarchs " , which belonged to the Russian-American company. They arrived ten years after the foundation of the first Russian settlements on Alaska, to preach Orthodoxy among the native population, and to serve the spiritual needs of Russian hunters and employees of the Russian-American company. The opening of the bronze bas-relief is a cultural-historical event, timed to coincide with the first visit of Metropolitan Tikhon to Russia. Metropolitan Joseph Presides at One Year Memorial for Metropolitan Philip March 26, 2015 Thursday, March 19, 2015, marked the one year anniversary of the repose of His Eminence Metropolitan Philip of thrice-blessed memory. On Sunday, March 22, His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph celebrated the Divine Liturgy and one year memorial for Metropolitan Philip at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Brooklyn. In his eulogy, Metropolitan Joseph spoke about the many accomplishments of Sayidna Philip over 48 years, but in the end reminded the faithful that ultimately his desire to build up the Archdiocese and its institutions was driven by his desire to bring people closer to Christ so that the Orthodox faith could manifest itself on this continent. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America also attended and, after concelebrating the memorial, gave a wonderful homily recalling his many years of working with our late Metropolitan in both SCOBA and the Assembly of Bishops. He remembered both his strong convictions and beliefs as well as his love and ability to cooperate. His Grace Bishop John of the Diocese of Worcester also concelebrated the liturgy and memorial. His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon and His Eminence Archbishop Michael of New York, both of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) were scheduled to be present but could not due to the funeral of Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko. Likewise, His Grace Bishop John of the Russian Orthodox Church was scheduled to be at the memorial liturgy but was ill. All sent their regrets for not being able to attend. His Excellency Bashar Ja " afari, Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations and Mr. Madji Ramadan, Counsel General of Lebanon in New York, also were present and extended their condolences to Metropolitan Joseph. A memorial lunch was served in the cathedral hall following the liturgy and memorial at which time, Metropolitan Philip " s niece, Leslie Saliba Nasr spoke on behalf of the family. Our hierarchs and clergy throughout the archdiocese held similar memorials in every church. May his memory be eternal and may his soul rest with the saints! 27 марта 2015 г. Over the Christmas recess, Assistant Professor of Homiletics and Rhetoric The Rev. Dr. Sergius Halvorsen and third-year M.Div. seminarian Tristan Gall traveled to Dallas, TX, to participate in the National Festival of Young Preachers. Sponsored by the Academy of Preachers, the National Festival attracted more than one hundred young preachers along with their mentors and evaluators. This is the fifth year faculty and seminarians from St. Vladimir " s have attended the festival. (Read about 2012 , 2013 , and 2014. ) During the three-day event held on the campus of Southern Methodist University at the Perkins School of Theology, each young preacher delivered a sermon on one of several biblical texts that followed the festival theme " Tell me a Story. " In addition to delivering their sermons, young preachers also received valuable feedback from evaluators, who often hailed from a Christian tradition different from that of the preacher. Father Sergius, who served as a mentor, commented, " As a teacher of homiletics, I find it extremely helpful to interact with preachers who come from different Christian traditions. It enables me to understand how people from various backgrounds hear preaching, what they look for, and what they expect. This enriches my work at St. Vladimir " s tremendously, as we seek to engage the world with Orthodox Christianity. " Fr. Sergius served as an evaluator for Joshua Scott, one of the young preachers at the Festival Two St. Vladimir " s Seminary alumni also attended the festival. Andrew Boyd, chairperson of the OCA Department of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry, preached, and Archimandrite Gerasim, rector of St. Seraphim of Sarov Cathedral (Orthodox Church in America) in Dallas, attended several of the sessions. Fr. Sergius preaching at St. Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral Mr. Boyd " s article on his participation in the festival was prominently featured in the program book. Catherine Golitzin, a senior at Pepperdine University and prospective student of St. Vladimir " s, also participated. " It never ceases to amaze me how much interest there is in the Orthodox Church among the participants, " reflected Fr. Sergius. " There is hardly a moment that we were not speaking with someone who has questions about the Orthodox Church. Our participation in these events is a wonderful opportunity for our students, and I " m deeply grateful to the Academy for their ongoing support. " On Sunday morning after the festival had concluded, Fr. Sergius served and preached at the St. Seraphim Cathedral. " We were received with warm and enthusiastic hospitality, " he said. 21 января 2015 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

It is therefore likely that the author of our text simply failed to mention the Gospel reading. See the analysis below. 58  Until the 11 th century, this litany preceded the Trisagion; only a few 11 th century manuscripts witness its transposition to the earlier point in the liturgy, which became normative in the 12 th –13 th centuries (Juan Mateos, La célébration de la Parole dans la liturgie byzantine. Étude historique (OCA 191, Roma: Pont. Institutum Studiorum Orientalium, 1971), 30). 61  Despite Afanasyeva, the contents of the treatise cannot be described as «a struggle between the angels, who are taking part in the liturgy and who help the priest to celebrate, and the devil, who tries to frighten the believers and to obstruct the celebration» (Afanasyeva, Old Slavonic Interpretations... 63). A story of such a struggle is indeed known, but from a different liturgical commentary, which is found in some late South Slavonic manuscripts, ascribed to St. Ephrem (Mirkovich, «Angels and Demons...»; Ivanova, «The Sermon of St. Basil the Great and of Father Ephraim...»), and which is interrelated to the late reworkings of Pseudo-Gregory’s treatise. But in the pristine redaction of the treatise, as well as in its oldest Russian translation, the devil is depicted as defeated from the very beginning of the liturgy (§ 6). However, §§ 16–17 describe a suspicious man «with sharp teeth like arrows and bloodshot eyes», possibly an allusion to the appearance of the devil. But the only function of this man is to try to expel «those standing in the church», and he by no means obstructs the celebration itself. Therefore, Afanasyeva’s generalisation is surprising. 63  See Michael Asmus, «Concerning the Question of Consecration of Commemorative Particles During the Divine Liturgy» [original title in Russian: Асмус М., «К вопросу об освящении поминальных частиц за Божественной литургией " ], in Вестник ПСТГУ I: Богословие. 50:23 ).
