Неверно было бы думать, что это послание является не более чем опровержением ереси. Существует и другая цель, о которой сам Иоанн говорит нам. Он пишет: «…чтобы и вы имели общение с нами… чтобы радость ваша была совершенна» (1:3,4). Более того, он говорит: «Сие написал я вам, верующим во имя Сына Божия, дабы вы знали, что вы, веруя в Сына Божия, имеете жизнь вечную» (5:13). Все это можно сравнить с основной целью Евангелия: «…сие же написано, дабы вы уверовали, что Иисус есть Христос, Сын Божий, и, веруя, имели жизнь во имя Его» ( Ин. 20:31 ). Итак, Евангелие носит больше характер благовестил, тогда как послание обращено к утверждению христиан в истинном знании, которое несет в себе вера. «В Евангелии даны «указания» к пробуждению веры (20:30,31), а в послании – критерии ее проверки» (J. Неизвестно, какое отношение послание имеет к Евангелию, поэтому ученые расходятся во мнениях, было оно написано до или после Евангелия. В любом случае дата написания Евангелия точно не известна.
