Michail (Mud’jugin Michail Nikolaevi), EB von Vologda und Velikij Ustjug Geboren wurde er am 12.5.1912 in St. Petersburg aus einer Angestelltenfamilie. Seit früher Jugend sang und diente er in der Nikolaj-Kirche «Na peskach», dann in der Andreas-Alt-Athos- Hof in Petersburg. 1929 Abschluß der Mittelschule, 1930 arbeitete er dann in der Fabrik «Krasnyj Putilovec», später, als Wärmetechniker ausgebildet, als Laborant, Techniker, Konstrukteur und Ingenieur. Nebenbei studierte er weiter. 1933 Abschluß des Instituts für Fremdsprachen. 1946 beendete er den Fernkurs an der Energie­Fakultät des Metall-Instituts. 1953 erhielt er den Titel cand. techn. Von 1953 bis 1957 dozierte er als Dozent am Leningrader Bergwerk-Institut Wärmetechnik. 1958 legte er ein Examen vor der Eparchialkommission in Vologda ab und wurde zum Priester geweiht; dies verursachte Aufsehen in Leningrad. Deshalb wurde er sofort an die Kathedrale von Vologda versetzt. Anderthalb Jahre später diente er an der Kazanskaja Kirche in Ustjuny, Ep. Vologda. 1963 wurde er Witwer, 1964 schloß er den Fernkurs an der GA Leningrad ab mit der Arbeit «Der Stand der römisch-katholi­schen Ekklesiologie zu Beginn des II. Vatikanischen Konzils». Er wurde Dozent für lateinische Sprache an der GA, dann lehrte er auch Geschichte und die Analyse der westlichen Konfessionen. Anfang 1966 erhielt Erzpriester Michail nach zwei Probevorlesungen, darunter über «Die Entwicklung der katholischen Mariologie in den letzten hundert Jahren» den Titel Dozent. In diesem Jahr wurde er auch Dekan der an der GA neu errichteten Fakultät für christliche afrikanische Jugend. 8 .10.1966 Berufung zum В von Tichvin, V der Ep. Leningrad und zum Rektor der GA Leningrad. 6 .11.1966 Bischofsweihe durch M Nikodim (Rotov) und andere Hierarchen. Vom 10.–22.2.1967 weilte er als Mitglied einer russischen Delegation in Helsinki; er war Mitglied bei den theologischen Gesprächen in Westdeutschland «Arnoldshain III», im August 1967 nahm er an der Kommission «Glaube und Verfassung» des WKR in Bristol teil, ebenso an der 3. Allchristlichen Friedenskonferenz in Prag sowie an der Vollversammlung des WKR in Uppsala, wo er auch im Fernsehen auftrat.
