Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George: The Oldest Church in the City of Beirut Lebanon, March 19, 2012 The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George holds a special place in the hearts of many Lebanese because of its unique location overlooking Parliament Square right in the heart of Beirut’s city center. The Cathedral of Saint George is the Mother Cathedral of Beirut’s Greek Orthodox community. It’s the “Thronos”, the throne of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut and its dependencies. The Cathedral is the oldest church in the city of Beirut, and one of the oldest in the region. The first Christian temple ever built in the very location goes back to the mid sixth century AD and it’s closely associated with Beirut’s famous Law School. Close links have developed between the Law School of Beirut and the Church. The bishop of Beirut Eustathius (Eustache), by decree of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II in the year 449 or 450, managed to give the city of Beirut, the title of “Metropolis”, a privilege that until then belonged the city of Tyre which was the capital of Phoenicia. Efstathius also built in Beirut a large cathedral, the church of the Resurrection (Anastasis Church), which bordered on the “auditoria”, the classrooms of the Law School of Beirut where Christian students worshiped in the afternoon after their lessons. The Anastasis church was destroyed in 551 AD by a massive earthquake that devastated Beirut. After the earthquake of 551, the Anastasis cathedral was build again around the twelfth century. In 1759 the cathedral was again shaken by another earthquake. It was then destroyed again to be rebuilt with a single altar, this time dedicated to Saint George. Ultimately the design turned out to be untenable; the cathedral collapsed again three years later after it was rebuilt. Finally in 1772 it was erected once more with three new altars as it still stands today. During the Lebanese civil war, the Cathedral suffered many attacks of theft and vandalism, as well as effects of nature’s impact in a region considered a war zone and confrontation line. In 1998, the restoration multi-phase project started on the 15th of December, 2003, when the Cathedral once again opened its doors to the faithful. Greek Reporter 19 марта 2012 г. ... Statement by the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations on the Mass Murder of Christians at a College in Oregon, USA Source: DECR Communication Service October 2, 2015 A woman holds her daughter during a vigil in Roseburg, Oregon for ten people killed and seven others wounded in a shooting at a community college. The Russian Orthodox Church is deeply grieved to learn about the terrible terrorist action in a college in the state of Oregon in the United States, in which peaceful people were killed. What makes the tragedy even graver is that the killer consciously chose to victimize young people who confess Christianity. This glaring inhuman act confirms once again that Christianity has become the most persecuted religion in the world. Extremists in various parts of the world increasingly seek to provoke hatred and enmity among religions and nations, for which they are ready to commit the most inhuman evil deeds. The Moscow Patriarchate again and again calls the world community to pay attention to the importance of protecting Christians against terror. We keep reminding the powers that be and religious and public leaders of the responsibility lying on their shoulders for the peaceful co-existence between people of different religions, ethnoses and cultures. At the same time, we believe that the terrorist actions committed in the recent time in various countries of the world were provoked by the political and social chaos created by external forces in a number of countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa. The Russian Orthodox Church is grieving together with the American people for those who were killed and praying for the recovery of the injured and for the consolation of the families and friends of the victims of the terrorist action. We hope that the authorities of the United States of America will take measures to prevent such tragedies and ensure a peaceful and safe life for Christians and people of other traditional religions. 2 октября 2015 г. И божество, и вдохновенье, И жизнь, и слезы, и любовь. A wondrous moment I remember, Before me you at once appeared: A fleeting vision you resembled Of beauty " s genius pure and clear. By grieving languor hopeless rendered, In fuss of noisy vanity, Long time in me your voice rang tender Of your dear features were my dreams. Years passed.  Rebellious storm winds sundered And scattered hopes that used to be And I forgot your voice so tender, Your features dear and heavenly. In gloom of backwoods " isolation, My days dragged by, a silent drudge. Without God " s spark or inspiration Or tears, or any life, or love. My soul awoke in precognition And once again there you appeared Resembling a fleeting vision Of beauty " s genius pure and clear. And now the heart beats in elation! And once again in it rise up The spark of God and inspiration And life, and tears at last, and love. А.С. Encyclical of Greek Archbishop Stylianos of Australia Concerning Same-Sex Marriage Concerning the impending address of the Federal Parliament concerning same-sex marriage, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia Archbishop Stylianos has issued na encyclical to his Australian flock: To the Reverend Clergy and the honourable Administrative Committees of the Parish-Communities of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Dearly Beloved, Further to our Encyclical of 28th May 2013, in relation to a law which the State proposes to vote upon with regard to Marriage between persons of the same gender, we write to you once again because the Federal Parliament is expected very soon to deal with the redefinition of the concept of Marriage. You might appreciate, then, should such an Act be legalized, what destructive consequences this will have on the institution of Marriage, but also on the institution of the Family more generally. As Orthodox Christians, therefore, we are obliged, once again, to express in the strongest possible terms, our objection to the enactment of such legislation, as this will assail the sacredness of the Sacrament of Marriage and the Family, as has been taught to us through the ages by our holy faith and by the Fathers of the Church. In the first instance, of course, our reaction must be through prayer to God. That is why the period of the August Fast for the Dormition of our Lady, which is about to commence, is the most appropriate time to beseech the Theotokos, of whom we ask, as " a fervent advocate and invincible battlement, fountain of mercy and sheltering retreat for the world, " to protect the People from such an aberration. We are also called upon to protest by gathering signatures, requesting the defeat of the proposed legislation. Our protest may be expressed by signing the relevant petitions or via the online internet page of the Archdiocese (marriage.greekorthodox.org.au). You shall receive detailed instruction from our Reverend Clergy. Hopeful that none of us will show indifference to such an important issue, I thank you for your cooperation in this matter and pray that the abundant blessings of God be upon you all during this blessed period of the Sacred August Fast. Sydney, 17th July 2015 With fervent fatherly prayers Archbishop Stylianos Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia PS—To be read in the Churches at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy on the Sundays of 26th July, 2nd August and 9th August. 29 июля 2015 г. There were perfectly incredible episodes, if I do not confuse anything. Thus, the frescoes in the church which has been consecrated in Katyn, depicted, in particular, the Orthodox chaplain of the Polish Army (he is not canonized). Descendants of this Orthodox Polish chaplain who stood side by side with the executed Poles have been found. It is also symbolical but spoken little about. Metropolitan Hilarion: Unfortunately, the visit of His Holiness the Patriarch to Poland took place in the days when the media space was filled with completely different events which seemed to attract attention not proportional to their real importance. I often have the feeling that our information space has turned into a Kingdom of Distorting Mirrors, as people are told things about life that are quite different from what happens in reality. To be more correct, the media takes from our real life some particular facts linked first of all with scandal, with something negative. Such an enormous charge of negative information received by people from the mass media, the Internet and television is very difficult to be counterbalanced by anything different. Unfortunately, we as clergymen continually encounter the need to overcome the negative impact of the same television and the same mass media. Once His Holiness Patriarch Kirill said that the Church has an enemy in every house and every flat – an enemy who works around the clock. This enemy is television. I do not like to introduce any antagonism between television and the Church because the Church does have an opportunity for working on television, and we at this moment are using this opportunity. In this sense, we should be grateful to the leaders of our TV channels who provide us with this opportunity. Yet I would like to say once again that in our society as a whole and in the mass media there should be more positive information including information coming from the Church. I think the more positive things, the less aggression. mospat.ru Другие публикации на портале:

The Russian Orthodox Diaspora: Copenhagen 1987-1988/Православие.Ru Tweet Нравится The Russian Orthodox Diaspora: Copenhagen 1987-1988 Archpriest Nicholas Artemov The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Copenhagen was established back in Tsarist times. In fact, Danish Royalty and the Russian Royal House have been closely connected—Tsar Nicholas II " s mother, Tsarina Maria Feodorovna, was a Danish princess. Archpriest Nicholas Artemov, who served there from 1987-88, published on the website ROCOR Studies his memoirs of that historical parish. St. Alexander Nevsky church on Bredgade 53. Its interior and exterior demonstrate the same imperial splendor as St. Alexander Nevsky church in Jerusalem (1896) or Holy Trinity Cathedral’s in Buenos Aires (1901). Photo by Bishop Agapit      Archpriest Sergei Plekhov, the rector of the Parish of St Alexander Nevsky in Copenhagen wanted to publish a book about the community, but found that he lacked certain information. When he asked me what I knew about the church life in Copenhagen, I realised that I could not remember all the details of my Copenhagen ministry. I did however remember about my pocket diaries from those years and ventured into the basement where I believed they might be stored. When I found them, I was amazed by the level of detail entered in day by day. I had forgotten that I once used to be organised like this (the electronic diary I am using at the moment doesn’t inspire one to make such detailed entries). The images of past events were coming back to mind once again. In 2012, during my summer holidays, I wrote up a historically-accurate account of those days, based on the notes in the diaries. The extent of this account exceeded even my own expectations. Although, it was far too lengthy to be used in the Copenhagen Parish book, it seemed a shame just to discard it and so the text was preserved. Deacon Andrei Psarev, my colleague since 1989, read this account and asked to have it published. For a long time, I couldn’t get round to editing the text, but now, here goes …

For us, the members of the same Church  that Saints Erkenwald, Sebbi, Cedd and Mellitus, and King Edward the Martyr belonged to; the Orthodox Church that Saints Ethelburga, Tortgith, Hildelith, Wulfrida, Cuthburga, Cwenburga, and Osyth sanctified by a simple nun’s prayer; the Church that flourished in this land since one of those ‘olive-skinned immigrants’,  Theodore of Tarsus, raised the Anglian monk Eorcenwald to the rank of bishop – for us, the real England is in the flattened, broken stones intersecting the green grass. It is in the prayers of the saints who once walked here and of the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos, who looks lovingly on England, her Dowry, and longs to hold it in her arms again. It is in our Orthodox people, who come here from every corner of the globe, united today in the prayer that England someday will return to what she once was and still is in the eyes of Almighty God: a province of the Orthodox Church. Through the prayers of thy Most Holy Mother and of all the Saints of Barking, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us and save us. Amen. Brussels, Washington Pressure Greece, Romania To Recognize Kosovo’s Independence Belgrade, October 2, 2013 Washington and Brussels boost pressures on five EU member states that have not recognized Kosovo’s independence to change their attitude, and in the last weeks under attack are particularly Greece and Romania, writes Serbian daily “Novosti”. EU flag      This is why Belgrade activated all of its political and diplomatic mechanisms to stop the wave of the new recognitions of Pristina, which would certainly ensue if any of the five countries would “yield”. This confirmed Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic for “Novosti”, who has been in an official visit to Athens last week with one of the main goals to persuade Greek friends to remain consistent in their politics toward Kosovo and Metohija. “I told Prime Minister Samaras that it is very important that Greece does not change its position not to recognize Kosovo, because this can be a precedent for changing politics of other countries.” According to information obtained by “Novosti”, official Athens has already sent signals that their “line of defence” is not so solid anymore, and not just because of the economic dependence of the leading EU countries, who are also promoters of Kosovo’s independence. Greece does not look favorably on the strengthening of relations between Serbia and Macedonia, which Greece does not recognize. President of the Parliamentary Committee for Kosovo and Metohija Milovan Drecun said for “Novosti” that currently the strongest positions are of Spain and Cyprus, which successfully resist pressures. Predrag Simic, professor of the international law, explains that Bucharest and Athens are currently “most appropriate” for pressures, due to economic difficulties they have: “Brussels agreement greatly changed the reality in the field and many countries that have not recognized Kosovo wonder if they have more damage or use if they continue defending Serbian interests, stronger than Serbia itself. The Embassies of the countries that have not recognized Kosovo: Spain “Spain’s principled position is not to recognize Kosovo’s independence and it will not change. Our Foreign Minister Magali stressed that we will not recognize Kosovo until Serbia accepts it,” said the Spanish Ambassador Arturo Beltran Laclaustra. Slovakia “Slovakia’s position, which does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, has not changed. This has been confirmed once again during the recent meeting of Slovak and Serbian officials,” says the Slovakian Embassy in Belgrade. Romania “Bucharest has not changed its policy towards Kosovo’s independence, which we do not recognize. We remind you that this spring our parliament discussed the issue, but there is no deadline by which the Parliament should declare again whether it keeps the attitude or will change it.” In Serbia 5 октября 2013 г. ...
