Archive Statement of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in Support of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church 29 April 2018 year 15:05 On 26-27 April 2018, a regular session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia took place in New York under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York. The Synod, whose members represent the ROCOR dioceses in the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia, issued a statement concerning the situation in Ukraine. We, the members of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, who carry out our ministry in North America, Europe and Australia, behold with pained soul that in the sacred territory of Kievan Rus’, our beloved land of Ukraine, treacherous political aspirations arise once again — as has happened before in history — under the guise of religious activities but with the evident purpose of inciting enmity and discord amongst the Orthodox people, with the intention of inciting a schism in the Church. Attempts are now being made to create, in this long-suffering land, a separate “autocephalous church” in place of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, recognized by all and headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onouphry of Kiev and All Ukraine. This Church has possessed autonomy since 1990 — that is to say, self-governance and independence in its administration. Before us at present is nothing other than a crafty effort to seize upon religious sentiments and subordinate them to the political goals of today’s authorities, directly contradicting the tradition and canonical norms of the Holy Orthodox Church. We pray to Almighty God that the passions and troubles stirred up by the efforts of those who are alien to the spirit and grace-filled order of the Church might vanish like smoke, that dissensions may be quieted by His mercy, and that the peace of our Man-loving God, resurrected from the dead on the third day, may reign in their hearts. With this statement, we express our complete support for His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry, together with his brother-archpastors, clergy, monastics and the faithful flock of the sole canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and with love we bow before their confessor-like struggles. No alteration to the life of the Church can be initiated or imposed upon her by secular authorities. The present attempts to influence the life of the Church from the outside reveal only the fundamentally non-ecclesial motives and goals of those attempting to implement them. We call on all to pray for the canonical Orthodox Church in the Land of Ukraine, that the present attempt at church schism will come to naught, and that peace and brotherly love may ever prevail in the relations between the Local Orthodox Churches.      Statistics from Britain " s national happiness index have suggested that Christians are among the happiest people in the nation, while those who don " t identify with any particular religion generally scored the lowest life satisfaction numbers. The Office for National Statistics posted numbers pertaining to several happiness and life satisfaction questions measured between April 2012 and March 2015. The study, released Tuesday, found that Christians, with all denominations grouped together, reported an average mean of life satisfaction at 7.60. This was the highest mean in the table, alongside Hindus, who also posted the same number. The groups with the lowest average score were the non-religious at 7.41, and the " any other religion " group, at 7.31. When it came to the question of whether life is worthwhile, Jews and Christians were on an average most likely to answer yes, at 7.90 and 7.86 mean respectively. The non-religious were at the lowest end of the scale, with a 7.58 mean. Similar results were also marked in the general happiness question, with Hindus and Christians scoring the highest average means, at 7.57 and 7.47 respectively. Once again the non-religious had the lowest number, at 7.22. The detailed survey, which had a sample size of 304,740 people, explored the questions in a variety of other categories as well, including geographic locations within the U.K., age groups and health status. The statistics showed that the 65 to 79 age group was the happiest of all, while those aged 45 to 59 reported the lowest levels of life satisfaction. As for the religious group results, Dr. Paul McLaren, a consultant psychiatrist at the Priory Hospitals, said that faith can indeed be a protective factor for many people. " With it usually comes strong social support which is a recognized protective factor against psychological trauma, " McLaren said, according to The Telegraph . Other studies in the past, such as a December 2014 release by the Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture, have also found that there is a strong link between happiness and religion. The results found that 45 percent of those who attend church weekly would describe themselves as " very happy, " while only 28 percent of those who never attend said the same. On the other end of the scale, 4 percent of those who never attend church said they were " very unhappy, " compared to 2 percent of those that attend weekly. " Greater levels of church attendance predict higher life satisfaction even when we account for how important religious faith is in people " s lives, " the study said at the time. " This result offers tentative evidence that actual integration into a religious support network through attendance at religious services may in part be responsible for the increased happiness observed among religious people. The Church schism is a bleeding wound on the body of the Ukraine, Holy Synod of UOC MP says Kiev, June 24, 2015 On June 24, 2015, a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) was held at the St. Panteleimon’s Monastery in the Kievan neighborhood of Theophania. The major subject of address of the Holy Synod to the Ukrainian people was the question of overcoming the Church schism. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church always was and still remains open to a constructive dialogue with all who today are outside the unity of the universal Orthodoxy, the message on the UOC website reads. However, cases of aggression and seizure of canonical churches by schismatics (often with the connivance of local authorities) make the restoration of the Church unity much more difficult. The Holy Synod also noted the inadmissibility of state interference in the internal affairs of the Church. Not only does it not further overcoming the Church schism, but it also puts obstacles on this path: “The tragic Church schism has become a bleeding wound on the body of the Ukraine. A portion of our fellow countrymen, who confess the Orthodox faith, already for the third generation have been outside communion with universal Orthodoxy. Lately there have been many attempts to seize our canonical churches and their forcible transfer to the so-called “Kyiv Patriarchate”. By now 23 churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have been seized. Therefore, parishioners of the canonical Ukrainian Church are bereft of any opportunity to attend their own parish churches and freely worship in them. “We are deeply concerned about the fact that unlawful acts against religious communities of our churches are frequently committed with the tacit consent of local authorities, or even with their assistance. All this makes the restoration of Church unity much more difficult… Once again we affirm the willingness of our Church for candid and constructive dialogue with representatives of the unrecognized Church groups within the Ukraine. The dialogue should be based on canon law and implemented without interference by non-Church (secular) factors in the process. Overcoming schisms is an internal Church matter. We understand the interest of the state authority in restoration of the Church unity, but we object to a state interference in the inner Church life,” the statement reads. 29 июня 2015 г. Archbishop Ieronymos informed Patriarch Kirill that the funds raised by the Russian Orthodox Church were divided between 81 metropolises of the Church of Greece and the Archdiocese of Athens in proportion to their sizes. The funds, he said, were used to support programs for free soup-kitchens and charity projects for aid to victims of the economic crisis.   His Beatitude also stressed that the central economic service of the Church of Greece guaranteed that it would give a detailed and transparent account of all the expenditures. The fund-raising campaign in aid to the people in Greece who were most affected by the economic crisis in Greece was organized in January 2012 in Russian Orthodox churches and monasteries with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. mospat.ru Другие публикации на портале: © 2007-2024 Портал Богослов.Ru. Dismemberment Abortion Ban Blocked by Oklahoma Judge/Православие.Ru Dismemberment Abortion Ban Blocked by Oklahoma Judge Source: LifeSiteNews.com Oklahoma City, October 15, 2015      Oklahoma " s law banning second-trimester dismemberment abortions is unconstitutional, a judge has ruled. However, the judge allowed another pro-life law, instituting a 72-hour waiting period before a woman can abort her child, to stand. Both laws were set to take effect on November 1, but Oklahoma County District Court Judge Patricia Parrish " s injunction blocked the dismemberment law. The New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR), which supports abortion-on-demand, had challenged both measures on behalf of an Oklahoma abortion clinic. " The courts have once again bowed to activist agendas [instead of] protection of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for Oklahomans,” State Representative George Faught told LifeSiteNews. " Oklahomans by a large majority believe in protecting the life of the unborn, " said Faught, who described dismemberment as " cruel and heinous. " He said that " it is time to hold these activist judges accountable for their courtroom decisions that run opposite of traditional family values and protection of the unborn. " The dismemberment law " would have prohibited the most common method of performing a second-trimester abortion, " CRR attorney Autumn Katz told ABC News. The dismemberment law is the second state-level law of its kind to be stopped by courts. Kansas " law was halted after a challenge by the abortion industry. Rep. Faught " s son, Jamison, is a prominent blogger in the state. He also criticized Judge Parrish, saying that " the big surprise here is that Judge Parrish didn " t block the 72-hour waiting period law. " " Oklahoma, for some reason, is plagued with an anti-life judiciary,” he said. “It " s time Oklahoma passed judicial reforms along the lines of those proposed by pro-life legislators led by Rep. Kevin Calvey. " Calvey and Faught called for the impeachment of seven justices this summer over a decision to ban the 10 Commandments from the state Capitol.

The reconstruction and restoration of the Resurrection Cathedral at the New Jerusalem Monastery is now complete, the historic cathedral is once again ready for worship. Situated in the town of Istra, which is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Moscow, the monastery was founded in the 17th century by Patriarch Nikon. The Russian Orthodox Church have not yet set a date for the consecration of the cathedral. In the historical documents of the 17th century, the main cathedral of the New Jerusalem Monastery was called the Great Church of the Resurrection. It was conceived by Patriarch Nikon in the image of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Holy Land, but its fate over the centuries has not been an easy one. In 1723, the rotunda roof collapsed, a fire three years later caused further damage. For the next twenty years, the church stood virtually without a roof. The final blow came in December 1941, when the Nazis blew up the Resurrection Cathedral along with other monastery buildings. " For the first time in its 360-year history, the cathedral has been completely restored. All that we have dreamed of and waiting for all these years has finally been accomplished today " , - said the governor of the New Jerusalem Monastery Abbot Feofilakt Stavropegic (Bezukladnikov). During the past few years both locals and Orthodox Christians watched patiently the restoration progress of the Resurrection Cathedral, including the gradual recreation of the unique 12-tiered 24-meter iconostasis made of delicately restored tiles. In March 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a presidential decree for the restoration and renovation of the New Jerusalem Monastery, considered to be amongst the largest and most ambitious reconstruction and restoration projects in post-Soviet Russia. Form late antiquity to the Refomation, debates about the Bible took place at the center of manifold movements that defined Western civilization. In the eigtheenth century, Europe " s scriptural inheritance surfaced once again at a critical moment. During the Enlightenment, scholars guided by a new vision of a post-theological age did not simply investigate the Bible, they remade it. In place of the familiar scriptural Bibles that belonged to Christian and Jewish communities, they created a new form: the academic Bible. In this book, Michael Legaspi examines the creation of the academic Bible. Beginning with the fragmentation of biblical interpretation in the centuries after the Reformation, Legaspi shows how the weakening of scriptural authority in the Western churches altered the role of biblical interpretation. Оксфорд: Oxford University Press , 2011 г.  240 с.  ISBN 0199845883 In contexts shaped by skepticism and religious strife, interpreters increasingly operated on the Bible as a text to be managed by critical tools. These developments prepared the way for scholars to formalize an approach to biblical study oriented toward the statist vision of the new universities and their sponsors. Focusing on a renowned German scholar of the period, Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791), Legaspi explores the ways that critics reconceived authority of the Bible by creating an institutional framework for biblical interpretation designed to parallel-and replace-scriptural reading. This book offers a new account of the origins of biblical studies, illuminating the relation of the Bible to churchly readers, theological interpreters, academic critics, and people in between. It explains why, in an age of religious resurgence, modern biblical criticism may no longer be in a position to serve as the Bible " s disciplinary gatekeeper.

Syrian nun and human rights activist believes that the USA is the creator of Islamist terrorism Qara, Syria, October 20, 2014 In her interview with the Lebanese journalists, Nun Agnes Mariam of the Cross—human rights activist and Mother-Superior of the St. James’s Catholic Carmelite Convent on the outskirts of the town of Qara, has sharply condemned the actions of the pro-American coalition in the Middle East, accusing the USA of creating the Islamist terrorism, reports the Al-Binaa .      In describing her participation in the “In Defense of Christians” international conference, held in Washington, DC, on September 9-11 this year, Mother Agnes said: “This is a stillborn initiative. More than that, I had a feeling of danger there, especially after the speech by senator Ted Cruz who called upon us to collaborate with Israel; it was terrifying for me as well as for many other Palestinians to hear that after so many years of occupation. Our stay in “the most democratic country in the world” began with the undemocratic order—to be silent: at once we were told to avoid burning issues, not to mention that we belong to the Syrian nation, and to refer to the Syrian government only as to a “regime”. We were bound hand and foot and “the masters of the meeting” were virtually the only speakers there,” the mother-superior related. Discussing President Obama’s meeting with the heads of Christians churches, Mother Agnes expressed her disappointment: “The very fact that the government media were seriously discussing the question whether Obama at last was going to make an appointment with clergymen of all the Christian denominations or not, was insulting for them. Yes, the president eventually received the hierarchs—but again in an insulting manner—he received them through the back door after he had delivered his famous ‘Defeat ISIS speech’. It was no more than a window-dressing: real decisions, not dependent on us and beyond our control, were made beforehand”. Mother Agnes stated that she felt that the aim of western powers is to “shatter the human memory, to form a colorless society without history and values, in the Middle East. It is evident that one word ‘from across the ocean’ is enough to declare the Syrian government ‘illegitimate’ and to wage a full-scale war against us, against ordinary people.” Mother Agnes has also noted the role that the occupation has assigned to religion. “Politics are striving to make religion its obedient slave. We see as examples the ISIS and its predecessor, al Qaeda, since they are by no means connected with Islam, but the States are using them as a bomb capable of tearing the region apart from inside. That is why it is necessary to return to the true religious community, to listen to it,” said the human rights activist in conclusion. 22 октября 2014 г. Title to Historic Church Lands Returned to Alaska SYOSSET, NY [OCA] In an historic vote at its regular fall session here September 20-23, 2010, the Metropolitan Council of the Orthodox Church in America voted unanimously to return title to the ownership of Orthodox Christians in Alaska all real estate the national Church has held in trust since 1867. The decision was immediately blessed by the Lesser Synod of Bishops. According to the Treaty of Cession, which placed Alaska under American rule, ownership of the land and buildings was to be retained by the Orthodox Christians who worshiped therein. Legal title, however, was deeded to the resident Orthodox Bishop, to be held in trust for them. In 1870, when the Church " s headquarters were moved to San Francisco, the deeds went south as well. In 1904, the Archbishop " s see once again was moved to New York City, where the title has remained -- until today. In a 1923 letter written in response to an appeal by Father Andrew P. Kashevarov, the founder of the Alaska Territorial (now State) Historical Library and Museum, Judge James Wickersham of Juneau suggested that it would be prudent for the local bishop to hold the titles, rather than the head of the Church in New York. At the Metropolitan Council " s spring 2010 session, Archpriest Michael Oleksa, a member of the Metropolitan Council from the Diocese of Alaska, brought forth Wickersham " s suggestion and proposed that title to all Alaska Church lands be returned. Citing that it was the legal and fiduciary responsibility of the Council to know exactly what lands and funds were involved in such a move, Judge Ray Lanier, a Council member from the Diocese of the South, insisted that a complete listing of the holdings and their potential value be presented before any final decision be made, thereby tabling Father Michaels motion. Professor Lanier then spent an exhausting week in Anchorage, studying the records compiled by Ms. Grayce Oakley, the Diocese of Alaska " s lands secretary, who had spent over four years compiling, cataloging and becoming thoroughly familiar with all the deeds and their histories. Ms. Oakley " s work enabled the Church to act with proper diligence and care. Today -- 87 years later -- the Orthodox Church in America heeded Judge Wickersham " s wise counsel. In its decision, the Metropolitan Council specifically thanked Ms. Oakley, a Presbyterian, for her dedication and commitment in helping to preserve this heritage for Orthodox Alaska and future generations.
