On Friday evening, September 11, 2015, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America and President of Saint Vladimir’s Seminary here, welcomed His Holiness, Patriarch Irinej of Serbia to the seminary campus, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate during an academic convocation and delivered a well-received lecture. Patriarch Irinej’s visit came just days after he presided at the canonization of Saints Sebastian [Dabovich] of San Francisco and Jackson , the first American-born Orthodox priest, and Mardarije [Uskokovic] of Libertyville, the first bishop of the Serbian Diocese in America, which took place in Alhambra, CA on Saturday, September 5. Accompanying Patriarch Irinej were His Grace, Bishop Maxim of the Western American Diocese; His Grace, Bishop Mitrophan of the Eastern American Diocese; and His Grace, Bishop Justin of Zica. Metropolitan Tikhon and the seminary clergy, faculty, staff, students, trustees and guests welcomed Patriarch Irinej in the seminary’s Three Hierarch’s Chapel, where he venerated the relics of Saint Vladimir and the Holy Hierarchs Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom.  After the singing of the troparia of the newly glorified Saints Sebastian and Mardarije, Metropolitan Tikhon offered official greetings on behalf of the OCA Holy Synod of Bishops and presented the Patriarch with a panagia. Mr. Alex Machaskee, SVOTS Board Chair, led the hierarchs and attendees into the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium, where Metropolitan Tikhon opened the academic convocation, at which Archpriest Dr. John Behr, Dean, presided.  Father John offered a biographical sketch of Patriarch Irinej, after which the text of the Doctorate Honoris Causa was read.  After the Patriarch was invested with the academic hood and doctoral cross, he delivered his lecture, titled “Theology as a Hope for the Future of the Church.”  [The full text of Patriarch Irinej’s lecture appears below.]

Tweet Нравится The Quiet Courage of Patriarch Tikhon Georgiy Velikanov Patriarch Tikhon      He wasn’t a theologian and didn’t possess the charisma of a social activist, like his “competitor” for the Patriarchal throne Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky). He wasn’t a talented administrator and deft politician like his successor, Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky). He wasn’t an uncompromising, fearless confessor of his convictions, like the man he appointed to be his first Locum Tenens for the Patriarchal throne, the rock of courage, St. Kirill of Kazan. Finally, he was not even a detached ascetic, as some would have liked him to be (for example the head of the “Danilov [Monastery] Oposition” to the Patriarch, Bishop Theodore [Pozdeyevsky]). But the faithful people loved and respected him like no other hierarch, like no other Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church after him.      So, what was the secret of his charm and his influence over generations to follow? Patriarch Tikhon, without a doubt, was a “point of intersection” for all the Russian Church’s modern history. At him intersect all the different paths chosen by hierarchs and simple believers. Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) in his for some sad, for others encouraging Declaration of 1927 would position himself as supposedly continuing the ecclesiastical-political course taken by Patriarch Tikhon. Those bishops who opposed Sergius would accuse the latter of departing from the “Tikhonite” line of behavior. In the emigration, those who supported the Church in the Soviet Union called it the “Patriarchal” Church. The new martyrs and confessors of Russia were glad to be in agreement with the holy Patriarch Tikhon (as Archimandrite Seraphim [Tapochkin] proudly quoted his interrogators where they described him as a “Tikhonite priest”). The first Patriarch after a 200-year interruption in the Patriarchy, St. Tikhon became not a church politician, but a father to his flock. This is just the kind of person the Russian Church was waiting for during that era when the entire former ecclesiastical and state order was being devastated. Nevertheless, by far not all his contemporaries—upholding all the different convictions—immediately valued His Holiness’s behavior and countenance. The renovationist “metropolitan” Vvedensky called him a “weak-willed, soft-hearted character who never wielded any authority.” He wrote that, “He was never known to be an outstanding orator… In general he is just a random individual.” “He’s always laughing and petting the cat,” was the impression Bishop Theodore (Pozdeyevsky) had of him.

Praise the Lord, All Ye Nations: Patriarch Tikhon Choir " s First Album/Православие.Ru Tweet Нравится Praise the Lord, All Ye Nations: Patriarch Tikhon Choir " s First Album Source: PaTRAM November 17, 2015      “ Praise the Lord, All Ye Nations ” is the first album of the Patriarch Tikhon Choir, a 30-voice mixed choir that brings together vocalists and choral musicians from the United States, Canada, and Russia. The Choir is dedicated to Saint Tikhon (Belavin), who is uniquely honored for his labors, accomplishments, and vision in these three lands. The singers, who, in addition to performing on the concert stage, routinely sing Orthodox liturgical services, impart an essential spiritual element to their interpretation of Orthodox sacred music. Alexis V. Lukianov, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM), says of the CD, " This is the first album of the Patriarch Tikhon Choir. Our choir seeks to present Orthodox sacred music, rooted in the Russian tradition and sung by believers, in its highest possible form. We strive to unite heartfelt spirituality, a deep love for the traditions of Orthodox Christian singing, and an uncompromising standard of musical professionalism. Our mission and the evolution and refinement of our choir and institute are just getting underway. God willing, we will in the future record many more albums, featuring different liturgical services, composers, and even venues. " The recording includes works from the Orthodox All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy ranging from austere, centuries-old Znamenny Chants to sumptuous polyphonic works by such Russian masters as Dmitry Bortniansky, Alexander Gretchaninoff, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Also featured on the program are compositions and arrangements by contemporary Orthodox composers, Benedict Sheehan and Sergei Trubachev. In keeping with the choir’s multi-cultural approach, the CD includes selections in Church Slavonic and in English. The ensemble is under the direction of Maestro Vladimir Gorbik, one the most prominent church musicians in Russia today. Since 1996 he has served as the choir director at the Moscow Representation Church (Metochion) of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery. He has made more than a dozen outstanding recordings of sacred music, embodying the finest repertoire and interpretive traditions of the Moscow School and the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery. Critics have hailed Vladimir Gorbik’s “consummate choral artistry”--a depth of expression and subtlety seldom encountered in modern-day recordings of Russian sacred music.
