Metropolitan Tikhon presides at the Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Russian Cathedral in New York City on the day of its patronal feast Source: OCA Photo: OCA On Sunday, December 19, 2021, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, and at the invitation of His Grace Matthew Bishop of Sourozh and Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA & Canada, His Beatitude  Metropolitan Tikhon  presided at the Divine Liturgy at New York City’s Saint Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral on the day of the Cathedral’s patronal feast. Concelebrating with His Beatitude were Archpriest George Konyev, Chancellor of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Archpriest Alexander Golubov, Igumen Nikodim, Dean of the Cathedral and Secretary of the Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes of the USA, and Priest Alessandro Margheritino, Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America. Metropolitan Tikhon’s delegation included Deacon Peter Ilchuk, Executive Secretary to the Metropolitan. After the Divine Liturgy, Igumen Nikodim shared the greetings of Bishop Matthew who welcomed His Beatitude, and noted his regrets for not being able to participate in the celebration. Metropolitan Tikhon offered his greetings to both His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Bishop Matthew, thanking them for the opportunity to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on such beautiful and joyous day in which we honor the beloved Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. His Beatitude also thanked Father George and the Cathedral’s clergy for their hospitality and love. In his homily at the end of the Divine Liturgy , His Beatitude pointed out that, “In today’s Gospel, we read that the crowds gathered around the Lord Jesus Christ and ‘sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed them all.’ Perhaps, hearing this, we wish that we, too, could have seen Jesus with our eyes, touched him with our hands, and have received healing for the wounds of our bodies, our souls, our hearts. But of course, the Lord is always present to us, not just spiritually, in our inner being, but physically, through the saints.” Metropolitan Tikhon then remarked that, “Wherever there is sanctity, there is Jesus Christ. And in some cases, in accordance with God’s providence, the holiness of a person is so great that, even after his death, his body remains with us, visibly full of God’s healing grace, always making Christ’s power present in our lives. This is the case with Saint Nicholas.”

Concelebrating with the two hierarchs were clergy of the Cathedral and Priest Alessandro Margheritino, Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America. After the Divine Liturgy, the two hierarchs exchanged warm greetings, expressing joy at the opportunity to again enjoy communion and fellowship together after a hiatus due to the worldwide pandemic. His Eminence Hilarion shared the brotherly greetings of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, and presented His Beatitude with a gift from His Holiness. His Eminence pointed out that among the many events and celebrations affected by the pandemic was the 50th anniversary of the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in America. Metropolitan Hilarion noted how the Church in America is the fruit of missionary work of the Russian Orthodox Church, and in 1970 went from being a daughter Church to a beloved sister. His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon thanked His Eminence for the warm hospitality and remarked how joyful it was to be at this historic Church built by Saint Tikhon, a beloved saint of both Churches. His Beatitude also noted that the saints of the day, the venerable Sergius and Herman, Wonderworkers of Valaam, are also beloved common saints. From the monastery in Valaam came Saint Herman of Alaska and his companions to plant seeds in America laying the foundations of what later grew into the autocephalous Orthodox Church in America. The hierarchs were then hosted for lunch at the cathedral. At this time, they had fruitful discussions regarding various matters of mutual interest and concern.

Metropolitan Tikhon: The Kingdom of Heaven is attained by living the difficult and sacrificial way of the Cross Source: OCA Metropolitan Tikhon addresses Global Forum on Armenian Genocide On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, addressed the participants in the Global Forum on the Armenian Genocide in Yerevan, the Armenian capital. The text of his address appears below. ADDRESS OF HIS BEATITUDE, METROPOLITAN TIKHON GLOBAL FORUM ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE Yerevan, Armenia April 22, 2015 Your Holinesses, Your Eminences, Your Graces, Reverend Fathers and Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On behalf of the Holy Synod of Bishops, the clergy and the faithful of the Orthodox Church in America, I wish to thank His Holiness, Patriarch Karekin II, for his kind invitation to participate in today’s Global Forum and tomorrow’s Canonization of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide. It is a blessing to be with so many brothers and sisters from diverse Churches and organizations for this important commemoration, which touches the hearts of all who would consider themselves human beings. I would like to preface my brief words in order to mention that I represent a Church whose geographical territory includes the United States and Canada, one of whose governments has formally acknowledged the Armenian Genocide and the other who has not, to date, done so. This is a further illustration of the geopolitical tensions surrounding this issue that were spoken of in this morning’s Global Forum session. Nevertheless, I bring to you the support and prayers of the many North American faithful who have roots in Armenia and all other regions of the world where persecution and other acts of violence against humanity have been, and continue to be perpetrated. The Holy Apostle Paul reminds us of one of the foundations of the Christian life when he writes to Timothy: Everyone who desires to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted (II Timothy 3:12). Our Lord offered the only response a Christian can make in the face of persecution: You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:43-44).

Metropolitan Tikhon issues Archpastoral Letter concerning recent developments in Ukraine Source: OCA On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon addressed an Archpastoral Letter to the clergy, monastics and faithful of the Orthodox Church in America in reference to recent developments with regard to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. The  text of the letter , which reads as follows, is also available in  PDF format . Archpastoral Letter of His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon in Reference to Recent Developments Regarding the Orthodox Church in Ukraine 09.26.2018 09/016 To the Clergy, Monastics, and Faithful of the Orthodox Church in America: Christ is in our midst! I write in reference to recent developments respecting the Orthodox Church in Ukraine which have received much media attention. The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America has been closely following these developments inasmuch as they have an impact in our own communities. Many of our parishes have been affected by the painful historical ecclesiastical divisions that have existed in Ukraine for decades. In recent years, these ecclesiastical divisions have been overtaken by significant violent geopolitical conflict and our Church has consistently called for the offering of prayers for the healing of such division and the peaceful and just resolution of all conflict. Our Holy Synod has been apprised of initiatives by His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, to address this painful situation and has noted the various preliminary responses offered by other Orthodox Churches. In particular, we have received with sorrow, yet with understanding, the decision of the Moscow Patriarchate to cease liturgical commemoration of the Ecumenical Patriarch and suspend concelebration and participation by bishops of the Moscow Patriarchate in inter-Orthodox contexts. We are deeply aware of the pain and trauma in the life of Orthodox people caused by ecclesial schism which weakens Orthodox witness and evangelism in society. Such pain and trauma have been wounds in the life of Orthodox Christians in Ukraine for several decades. Schism, division, and mutual antagonism are not only canonical problems—they are pastoral and spiritual challenges demanding the healing power of Christ and Christian faith. We are mindful of the Russian Orthodox Synod’s call to the local autocephalous Churches to “understand the common responsibility for the fate of world Orthodoxy and to initiate a fraternal all-Orthodox discussion of the church situation in Ukraine.”

The Emigration of Faith An Intevrview with Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov) This Friday, His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, who died last Sunday, will be buried in Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, where he served as abbot. He played a crucial role in the reunification of the Orthodox Churches. It is symbolic that Vladyka Laurus died on the first Sunday of Great Lent, the feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy. His spiritual and historic role in the life of the Church served exactly that—the triumph of Orthodoxy. The Prior of Moscow’s Sretensky Monastery, Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov) talks with Russkaya Gazeta about Metropolitan Laurus’ role in the unification of the Churches. RG: Metropolitan Laurus’ role in the reunification of the Russian Churches is called crucial and preeminent. What was it that depended upon him personally? Archimandrite Tikhon: The question of the reunification of the Churches depended enormously on two persons—His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II and Vladyka Laurus. All that one or the other had to say was—not even a categorical " no " —but " the time has not come, " and the process would have been stalled for many years. But both one and the other said " Yes, this must happen. " And a very complicated, painstaking effort began. Vladyka Laurus understood perfectly that there were more than a few proponents of unification. But when this process began, there may actually have been more opponents . RG: Who opposed it, and why? Archimandrite Tikhon: A large percentage of people simply did not believe in the changes in Russia as a matter of principle. Some were perfectly satisfied with the " isolation " of the Russian Church Abroad. Some simply disdained today’s Russia. And Vladyka understood that at his age, and with his very bad health—for he had serious illnesses, he underwent complicated brain surgery—the task of reuniting the Churches would cause him great and persistent stress. He knew that he would not only endure criticism but would be denigrated. He knew that he was fulfilling the will of God and his historic duty as the Primate of the Church Abroad. He made this the most important goal of his life, he drew to a conclusion one period in the life of the emigre Church, he fulfilled the legacy of her founders on the reunification with the Russian Orthodox Church in the Fatherland after the government that promoted ideological godlessness and militant atheism would disappear into nothingness. For decades they believed that this would happen. And Vladyka Laurus turned out to be the one who completed this stage in the life of the Russian world.
