| Russian-Chinese group holds consultations on contacts and cooperation in religious sphere June 20, 2012 On June 19, 2012, the second consultations were held by the Russian-Chinese group for contacts and cooperation in religious sphere at the PRC State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA) in Beijing. The group was established in accordance with the memorandum of understanding on the development of Russian-Chinese contacts and cooperation in religious sphere concluded between the Russian Federation’s Presidential Council for Cooperation with Religious Organizations and the PRC State Administration for Religious Affairs. The group has worked in the format of consultations, with the first consultations held on June 8, 2011, in Moscow. The Russian side included Metropolitan Hilarion, head Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations and leader of the Presidential Council’s working group for contacts and cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in religious sphere, and members of the working group including Rushan-hazrat Abbyasov, vice-chairman of the Council of Muftis in Russia, Gelong Sanjey-lama of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha in Moscow, and D. Petrovsky of the DECR. Participating in the negotiations were also Ye. Tomikhin, minister-counsellor of the Russian embassy in China, and other Russian diplomats. The Chinese participants in the talks included Zhang Lebin, SARA deputy director, Ms Go Wei, director of the SARA department for international relations, Ms Liu Zinguan, director of the SARA Forth Department, and other staff members of the SARA. There were also representatives of the PRC Foreign Ministry’s department for European and Central Asia. Among those invited to take part in the talks were also Bishop Joseph Ma Yinglin, president of the Chinese Bishops’ Conference in China, Mustafa Yang Zhibo, vice-chairman of the Chinese Islamic Association, and Zun Sing, vice-chairman of the Chinese Buddhists Association. The participants in the consultations held in two sessions discussed the present situation of religious organizations in Russia and China including a set of problems involved in the situation of Orthodoxy in China. The sides emphasized the importance of developing relations between religious circles in Russia and China and noted the contribution made by religious confessions in the strengthening and broadening of relations between the two countries. | Archive Holy Synod considers problems arising in preparations for Pan-Orthodox Council 3 June 2016 year 20:20 During the session of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on June 3, 2016, it was noted that in the run-up to the Pan-Orthodox Council, serious problems arose demanding urgent joint Orthodox actions. “The decision that the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church made on June 1, 2016, as well the continued uncertainty as to the possibility for the Patriarchate of Antioch to attend the Holy and Great Council, just as the absence of preliminary consensus on the draft Working Procedure of the Council and the document “The Sacrament of Marriage and Impediments to It” mean that at the present moment when only two weeks remain before the planned date of the opening of the Council, there are serious problems demanding urgent joint Orthodox actions”, the Holy Synod’s resolution states. The Holy Synod adopted the Russian Orthodox Church’s amendments to the draft documents on “The Relations of the Orthodox Church with the Rest Christian World” and ‘The Mission of the Orthodox Church in Today’s World”. The amendments were formulated on the basis of judgements voiced by hierarchs, clergy, monastics and laity. It is stated in the Synod’s resolutions that as a result of the discussion held by the Orthodox Churches of Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece as well as the Holy Kinot of Holy Mount Athos on the draft documents of the Pan-Orthodox Council, essential amendments were presented, consonant to a great extent with the proposals made by the Russian Orthodox Church, demanding a substantial consideration with the aim to find general Orthodox consensus. The Holy Synod noted that nonparticipation of even a single Church in the Council constitutes an unsurmountable obstacle for the holding of the Holy and Great Council, considering that its decisions can be made only by consensus, as it follows from the provisions of the documents approved by the Synaxis of the Primates of the Local Churches. In accordance with the resolution of the Holy Synod, a way out of the emergency situation could be found in the holding of an extraordinary pre-Council conference to consider the situation and to examine the amendments to the Council’s documents so that agreed proposals may be developed. As a result of this conference, the Holy Synod’s resolution states, a judgement could be made as to the possibility of holding the Pan-Orthodox Council at the planned date. | Underground religious schools with kidnapped children found in Tajikistan Dushanbe, June 17, 2013 The activity of underground religious schools whose pupils had been earlier kidnapped from their parents has been exposed in Tajikistan, reported the press service of the republic " s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Monday, reports Sedmitza.ru . Two schools have been found in all—in Hisor and Shahrinav districts—in 20 and 40 kilometers from Dushanbe respectively. According to the press service " s message: " The workers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were put on the track of illegal house Madrasahs by 48-year-old resident of the Shahrinav district, Abdusalom Radjabov who was lately detained on suspicion of kidnapping children. " On June 9, a 5-year-old boy disappeared in Dushanbe. According to eyewitnesses, the child had been taken away from his yard by an unknown man. Kidnapping and disappearance of children is an extremely rare thing in Tajikistan, and such incidents evoke a large response from the populace. In his testimony, the detainee confessed that he had kidnapped children for their further training in illegal religious schools in his home. In the course of investigation, the testimony of A. Radjabov was completely confirmed. The Ministry of Internal Affairs workers unexpectedly came to a home, where the missing boy from Dushanbe was found together with nine other children from different regions of the republic. The Internal Affairs Ministry notes that many children were from poor families and their parents even did not report their disappearance to the police. " The detained ‘clerics’ were teaching religion to a group of children in unsanitary conditions, without a permit—that is, illegally—at the same time unlawfully holding them captive. Prior to this they had committed another felony—kidnapping them, " reports the Internal Affairs Ministry. Criminal case proceedings have been initiated; the " cleric-teachers " have been detained. The population of Tajikistan is 8 million people. About 99% are Muslims, the majority of them being followers of the Hanafi school of the Sunni branch of Islam. The experts note that the role of Islam is growing in the republic every year and a greater number of residents are becoming followers of more radical movements of Islam.
