Christians bring aid to Libyan civilians amid conflict/Православие.Ru Christians bring aid to Libyan civilians amid conflict June 22, 2011 Christians are braving the fighting in Libya to deliver help to civilians trapped in the five-month-old conflict between dictator Muammar Gaddafi " s forces and NATO alliance-backed rebels, a senior Roman cleric there said on 21 June 2011 - writes Fredrick Nzwili . " Christians are still in the hospitals and schools. They are giving their share of help to alleviate the situation of the people, " the Rev Daniel Farrugia, a senior Roman Catholic priest at St Francis Catholic Church in Tripoli, told ENInews via e-mail. Accurate casualty estimates are difficult to obtain, but they range from 2,000 to 13,000 deaths since the beginning of the year, from various sources including Libya " s opposition National Transitional Council, Human Rights Watch, the UN " s High Commissioner for Human Rights and others. Recently, civilian deaths have increased. On 19 and 20 June, estimates of civilian deaths caused by NATO forces ranged from 25 to 30. Fearing reprisal attacks in the mainly Muslim country, many Christians fled as the war intensified, but nearly 3,000 Filipino Catholics remain, according to Libyan church sources. The Christians are working in hospitals where they provide medical, social and psychological services. He said that Mass is being said as usual every Friday morning, even as NATO forces conduct airstrikes to enforce a UN-sanctioned no-fly zone and protect civilians. The action was approved by the UN Security Council after Gaddafi " s forces attacked civilians protesting his 42-year rule. " I hope this testimony will serve to make it clear to everyone that above all one should show solidarity to those who suffer, " Bishop Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli of Tripoli was quoted in media reports as saying in early June. " We pray this country and its people will find a peaceful solution. The violent way is not the solution. We believe in dialogue and pray for it, " said Farrugia. Asked what he thought about the future of the church in Libya, Farrugia said it will continue to stay and will always " dialogue " to find a way of serving Christians there and to give service. Before the war, there were more than 80,000 Christians in Libya. The Christians came from Asia, Africa and Europe, and belonged to the Catholic, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox and some Pentecostal churches. ENI News 24 июня 2011 г. ... К этому времени относится выход в свет четырнадцати номеров издававшегося в Иерусалиме в 1932–1936 гг. «Quarterly of the Department of Antiquities in Palestine». В послевоенное время для всей библейской археологии чрезвычайно важными и результативными были работы К. Кеньон, раскапывавшей легендарный Иерихон (см.: Kenyon К. Digging up Jericho. L., 1957) и Иерусалим (см.: Kenyon К . Excavations in Jerusalem, 1961//PEQ. 1962. V. 94, January – June. P. 72–89; … 1962//PEQ. 1963. V. 95, January – June. P. 7–21; … 1965//PEQ. 1966. Кеньон археологическими исследованиями Иерусалима занимались такие британские ученые, как К. Вайтлем (см.: Whitelam К. The Defence of David//JSOT. 1984. V. 29. P. 61–87), Дж. Вилкинсон (см.: Wilkinson J. Ancient Jerusalem: Its Water Supply and Population//PEQ. 1974. V. 106, January – June. P. 33–51), Г. Вильямсон (см.: Williamson H. Nehemiah’s Walls Revisited//PEQ. 1984. V. 116, July – December. P. 81–88) и А. Парро (Parrot A. The Temple of Jerusalem. L., 1957).

Metropolitan Onuphry asks the Ukrainian president to prevent seizure of monasteries and churches Kiev, June 27, 2014 Locum Tenens of the Metropolitanate of Kiev Metropolitan Onuphry of Chernovtsy and Bukovina has addressed the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko. “We are especially concerned about the fact that on June 22, 2014, a large number of armed people with aggressive behavior gathered near the Kiev Caves Lavra. All this looked like an attempt of seizure of the Lavra,” reads the address of His Eminence.      Your Excellency! Dear Petro Alexeyevich! Showing our sincere respect, we are addressing ourselves to you with the following question. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is continuously exerting every effort to preserve peace and inter-faith accord between churches and religious organizations in the Ukraine. But, unfortunately, in spite of all these efforts, we have seen attempts to break the inter-faith (fragile as it is) peace in the state lately. First of all, we mean the cases of attacks on churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and attempts to set them on fire. Thus, recently there have been arsons of churches in Kiev and other regions of the Ukraine, acts of vandalism have taken place as well as attempts of seizure of churches and other premises that belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. We are especially concerned about the fact that on June 22, 2014, a large number of armed people with aggressive behavior gathered near the Kiev Caves Lavra. All this looked like an attempt to seize the Lavra. By the mercy of God and thanks to the actions of the law-enforcement agencies, the situation was settled. However, events could have developed differently, which would have caused human victims and aggravated the split in society. We are outraged by the fact that recently messages have more than once appeared in media, substantially misrepresenting our Church’s stance on the situation in the Ukraine. The news coverage around the Kiev Caves Lavra was no exception. We regard all this as attempts to contrast the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with society artificially. Such actions pose a threat to inter-faith relations and public peace. In view of the above-mentioned facts, we apply to you for your personal intervention in the situation, and ask you to pursue all appropriate means in order to prevent attacks and seizures of churches and monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Invoking God’s blessing upon you and your labors. Yours faithfully, + Onuphry Metropolitan of Chernovtsy and Bukovina, Locum Tenens of the Metropolitanate of Kiev 2 июля 2014 г. Ankara upset at Vatican for pope’s remarks on mass killings of Armenians AFP Photo/Filippo Monteforte Turkey has reacted angrily to the Vatican following a statement from Pope Francis describing the mass killings of Armenians during World War I as “the first genocide of the twentieth century” during a meeting with a delegation led by Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics on June 3. “The Turkish Foreign Ministry delivered Turkey’s views on the issue and expressed disappointment to the embassy in Ankara and Vatican in Rome,” a Turkish diplomat told the Hürriyet Daily News on June 7. Pope Francis described the mass killings of Armenians during World War I as “the first genocide of the 20th century” during a meeting with a delegation led by Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics on June 3. The pope met with members of the delegation and when one of them said that she was a descendant of genocide victims, he replied, “The first genocide of the 20th Century was that of the Armenians,” reiterating his earlier recognition of the mass killings as “Armenian Genocide” while he was the head of the Catholic Church in Buenos Aires as a cardinal. In 2006, during events marking the 91st anniversary of the killings in Buenos Aires, he had urged Turkey to recognize “the genocide” as the “gravest crime of Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian people and the entire humanity.” Commenting on the issue, Armenian Apostolic Church Diocese of Gougark Bishop Sebouh Chuljyan Primate said, “The pope is speaking out a historical truth. Turkey needs to see the pains and should face the genocide,” he told the Hürriyet Daily News, adding that the archives of the Vatican may be opened to investigate the issue further. The director of the Armenian National Committee of South America, Alfonso Tabakian, explained that this was the first such statement from the pontiff since being elevated to pope and leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Tabakian called the statement “very important since his words transcend any state or religion,” according to the Armenian weekly website. Hurriyet Daily News 11 июня 2013 г. ... Archive 24th International Theological Conference on Gospel and Mission According to St. Paul 4 July 2018 year 10:06 On June 26-28, 2018, the 24th International Theological Conference on Gospel and Mission According to St. Paul took place in Veria, Greece. The conference traditionally brings together prominent Orthodox theologians from around the world. With a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the conference was attended by Archbishop Tikhon of Podolsk, administrator of the Diocese of Berlin and Germany. It was also attended by representatives of Local Orthodox Churches including Metropolitan Ambrose of Korea (Patriarchate of Constantinople), Metropolitan Seraphim of Zimbabwe and Angola (Patriarchate of Alexandria), Bishop Demetrios of Safita (Patriarchate of Antioch), Archbishop Theophylactus of Jordan (Patriarchate of Jerusalem), Metropolitan Gerasim of Zugdidi and Tsaish (Patriarchate of Georgia), Bishop Arsenije of Nis (Patriarchate of Serbia), Bishop Siluan of Gyula (Patriarchate of Romania), Metropolitan Panteleimon of Veroia, Naousa and Campania (Greek Orthodox Church). On the opening day June 26, Archbishop Tikhon read out a message of greetings sent to the conference by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations, on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. The conference completed its work on June 29 with the festive Liturgy presided over by His Beatitude Theodoros, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, who was assisted by hierarchs of Local Orthodox Churches and clergy of the Metropolis of Veroia of the Greek Orthodox Church. The festive event was also attended by Metropolitan Luka of Zaporozhe and Melitopol, who, in his talk with the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, spoke about the church affairs in Ukraine. Patriarch Theodoros II stressed that the problems involved in this situation should be solved through fraternal discussion since it is only a common agreement that can help settle them. ‘We will pray to God, Who does everything for our benefit, that He may bring everybody to reason for the solution of these problems. If schismatic Denisenko wants to return to the fold of the Church, he should appeal to there from where he has departed. What has fallen away should come back to there from where it has fallen away. God is merciful towards those who repent. In the same way, the Church forgives and embraces all those who repent’, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria said. In the letter, a copy of which the patriarchate sent to Aid to the Church in Need yesterday (25 June) evening, Bishop William goes on to highlight extracts from President-Elect Mursi’s post-election victory speech on Sunday (24 June). Bishop William stresses Mr Mursi’s apparent “willingness to collaborate with qualified people and heads of all groups and sectors…” The bishop states: “We pray that the Lord gives you success in the search for… the development of a modern, democratic, civil state, a state that respects the rights and freedoms of all and guarantees security, peace and social justice.” Concluding with a message directed at the Egyptian people, he calls on all sections of society to reconcile and pull together to build a new country. The bishop, who until Patriarch Naguib’s illness was Bishop of Assiut, Upper Egypt, writes: “We wish that Egyptians forget their differences… and pull together with one heart for the good of the country… for Egypt needs the effort, experience, ideas and strength of all her children to bring about its renaissance.” Bishop William’s comments echo those made yesterday (25 June) by fellow Coptic Catholic Bishop Joannes Zakaria of Luxor who told Aid to the Church in Need that he was reassured by Mr Mursi’s post-election address, particularly its references to cooperation with Christians and other minorities. Senior clergy have in the past expressed concerns about the rise of Mr Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which was oppressed by former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime, and which has been variously described as militant, intolerant and Islamist. In an interview with Aid to the Church in Need last month, Bishop Antonios Mina of Guizeh (Giza) responded to the continuing uncertainty over the outcome of the presidential elections by casting doubts on the Muslim Brotherhood. He said: “The Muslim Brothers say one thing then tomorrow they do another thing. They don’t maintain their promises – that’s the problem.” John Pontifex acnuk.org Другие публикации на портале:

Greek Orthodox Church Bishop to be Enthroned for First Time in Botswana June 1, 2012 After two years of constant efforts and humanitarian work, the relatively newly founded Greek Orthodox Diocese of Botswana will have its first Greek Orthodox Church Bishop enthroned June 2. Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria is expected to arrive at the South African country on June 1, and will be the one to ordain the new Bishop of Botswana Gennadios Stantzios on the following day at the Anglican Cathedral in Gaborone. The enthronement is expected to be attended by several Bishops from across the continent, Greece, Europe, as well as politicians and MEPs. Bishop Gennadios has been deeply involved in promoting the work and action of the Greek Orthodox mission in the country for the past two years. Bishop Gennadios noted that his top priority is to build the first Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Botswana. During his stay in Botswana, the Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria will meet with the President of the Republic Seretse Khama Ian Khama, as well as with representatives from the Orthodox communities. Theodore II will also visit children hospitals and will also bless the real estate where the first Orthodox Cathedral is to be built. Gennadios Stantzios was born in 1969 in Eslingen, Germany. Archbishop Jovan transferred to solitary confinement prison Belgrade, June 12, 2012 Yet another legal process has begun by the Macedonian authorities against Archbishop Jovan of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje of the Serbian Orthodox Church. On June 8, 2012, Archbishop Jovan, who has been imprisoned six times over the past ten years, has now been transferred from Izidrovo prison to solitary confinement in Suto Orizari prison, where he will be under great duress. Twenty-three hours in isolation with only one hour for walking within the prison walls will cause a threat to the archbishop’s health. He suffers from diabetes and serious back pain, reports the press services of the archbishopric . In Izidrovo Archbishop Jovan was only allowed visits from his mother and sister, who were able to bring him needed medicines. In his new prison conditions, the archbishop is allowed no visitors whatsoever. Now a third process has begun against the archbishop, which instigated his transfer to solitary confinement. “It is apparent that no one in Macedonia has been imprisoned so many times over a ten year period. There is no doubt that we are talking about political persecution, which places our country in the category of an only partially democratic country,” stated the Ohrid diocese. Archbishop Jovan was consecrated bishop of the Ohrid diocese by the Serbian Orthodox Church after he and a number of believers began to call for the reunification of Macedonian Orthodox Christians with the canonical Serbian Church. The government of FYROM sentenced him to 18 months of prison in June 2005 for " Instigation of ethnic, racial and religious hatred, discord and intolerance " , based upon his break from the uncanonical national church. He was later arrested again for “embezzlement”. The current accusation against is likewise “embezzlement”. The Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Moscow Patriarchate, the Church of Greece, the Holy Community of Mount Athos, the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas, and the Orthodox Church in America have all petitioned the FYROM government for the release of Archbishop Jovan. 12 июня 2012 г. ...
