For his part, the Catholic pontiff overlooked the vital dogmatic differences, insisting at his Tbilisi Papal Mass that Catholics ought never to proselytize the Orthodox, which would be “a grave sin against ecumenism,” in light of his belief that Orthodox and Catholics are brothers and sisters in the faith. For the Orthodox, it would be precisely the notion that we must never seek to bring Catholics into the saving enclosure of the Orthodox Church that would be a sin, and a grave one at that, wholly lacking in love. The Pope was met with respect and dignity, but not as a right-believing bishop of the true Church. He was neither invited to homilize during any Orthodox divine service, nor to bless the Orthodox faithful, nor was he seated upon any episcopal throne, nor was the liturgical Kiss of Peace exchanged—actions which would only wound the Orthodox conscience of the faithful, causing confusion and anger. As a wise and discerning shepherd, Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia II maintained a balance between respect for his guest and respect for his own flock and Church, and his own ordination, with all its ensuing responsibilities, setting an example for Orthodox-Catholic interactions, and giving voice to the Orthodox truth in his own speech at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral: “True faith, humbleness and our traditions—these are the ancient treasures that we preserve and will continue to do so in future. We greet you again and confess that our unity is in the true faith . Only true faith and love will open the path towards our communion.” Jesse Dominick 4 октября 2016 г. It is especially important for people who have studied theology. How often, as historical examples tell us, people who have seemingly reached the heights of mental knowledge of God, having studied everything, having read everything, become terrible cynics and lead others into yet greater destruction. May it not be so with us, dear brothers and sisters; may we be along with the apostles simple, faithful, sincere, and, of course, to the best of our ability, students and preachers of the risen Christ; may we be bearers of the good news of the all-conquering Gospel truth. St. Catherine was venerated in Rus’. It’s no coincidence that her name was given to empresses who were not born in Russia but took new names in Baptism. They joyfully received the name of Catherine precisely to attract the help of this saint to themselves and to resemble her at least to some small degree in strength of spirit. Cities in Russia were named in honor of St. Catherine, not the Tsarina, that the lives of their people would pass under her prayerful protection, that they would have a guideline, an ideal, an example, according to which simple, and rich, and poor, and noble, and common people could acquire the greatest strength of spirit, capable of making of an ordinary man a genius of spirit, a hero, and holy person. And now, located in the center of the city of Ekaterinodar, named in honor of the holy great martyr, together with you we turn to her: holy Great Martyr Catherine, help us in our lives, help us overcome hardships and sorrows, temptations and seductions, strengthening our strength of spirit, without which there are no victories in human life. May the Lord and the Mother of God keep you by the prayers of the holy Great Martyr Catherine. —Why do you think there was this reaction of slowing down the introduction of the “new style” in Poland? There was strong opposition against moving to the “new style” in Greece as well, but the majority of parishes have still moved over to it. In Poland the parishes simply ignored the innovation. Why do you think there was this difference? —The Orthodox in Poland have repeatedly experienced difficulties from their heterodox neighbors: the Union of Brest, the confiscation of Orthodox churches… Tensions grew after the partitioning of the country, when Orthodoxy in Poland became identified with the Russian Tsarist regime. In the twentieth century people began to fear that the 1924 change of calendar was meant to lead, not without forethought, to a “new union,” or, to put it another way—towards the absorption of the Orthodox communities by the Roman Catholic Church. Historical note: In the united Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1569 until the first division of the country in 1772 the Roman Catholic Church was the most numerous, although it comprised only half of the population. It was never a one hundred percent Catholic country, which the partitioning of Poland, involving the nation’s Protestants and Orthodox, indirectly facilitated. Poland’s historically intrinsic, since the time of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, tolerance towards various confessions helped the Orthodox in the twenties of the previous century. Father Thomas Hopko of blessed memory did an excellent podcast series called " " Bishops " " available on Ancient Faith Radio which looks at the history of the Church, and one of the issues that really stood out was how poor some of the Patriarchs in Constantinople were. I sometimes wonder if God allowed Constantinople to be overrun by muslims to prevent said Patriarchs from doing even more damage to His Church than they otherwise would have.

And again—who do we recognize in our very selves, when at the end of Great Lent the holy Church places the holy Plaschanitsa before us? Every time, entering a church, we are appearing not just at some place in our world. We find ourselves at the judgment of God. The Church unequivocally warns us about this in the days of preparation for Great Lent, with the parable of the Public and the Pharisee. But Holy Friday is a time of special judgment over a Christian after the arena of Holy and Great Lent. What are the fruits of these days, so important for our spiritual lives? Everyone will inform his own soul about that, when he comes to venerate the image of the solitary, naked, and wounded one. In these moments, having followed the Pharisee, our soul will praise God: “God, I thank Thee that I did not take part in this terrible crime, committed by the high priests, scribes, Pilate, and Roman soldiers!” Or, not lift[ing] up so much as his eyes unto heaven (Lk 18:14), although standing before the incarnate One on earth, reviled, wounded, demonized, but the true God of Heaven, we can only dare to say, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Bishop Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Egorievsk Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 14 апреля 2017 г. Dimitry Brianchaninov attended services at the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra and found true mentors there who understood his spiritual needs. The final upheaval in his life led to an acquaintance with Elder Leonid (later Hieromonk Lev of Optina ). Dimitry Brianchaninov left the glitter and riches of the aristocratic life, and, causing deep bewilderment from “the world” and the dissatisfaction of his parents, he retired in 1827. Having been a novice in several monasteries, he received the monastic tonsure with the name of Ignatius in the secluded Dionisievo-Glushitsky Monasmery. In January 1832, Hieromonk Ignatius was appointed to build the Pelshemsk-Poltava Monastery in the Vologda Province, and in 1833 was elevated to the rank of igumen of the monastery. Soon Emperor Nicholas I called St. Ignatius to St. Petersburg; by the highest recommendation and by directive of the Holy Synod, he was elevated to archimandrite and appointed as abbot of St. Sergius Hermitage. Living at St. Sergius Hermitage for twenty-four years, Archimandrite Ignatius guided it into a state of flourishing. On October 27, 1857, he was consecrated as bishop of the Caucasus and the Black Sea. He arrived in Stavropol the following year where he was faced with much arduous work, but became seriously ill with smallpox, which impeded his labors. The bishop decided to ask for retirement in 1861 and settled in Nikolo-Babaevsky Monastery. There, free from pastoral duties, he gave all his time until the end of his life (1867) to the composing of spiritual works. Translated by Jesse Dominick брянчанинов.рф 13 мая 2017 г. If a person feels some fatigue, if irritability and conflicts accrue, then we must strengthen our prayer, and the main thing is that we must impress upon ourselves that any violation of inner peace and calm during Lent negates the entire point of the Great Lenten podvig. The very first step each one of us must take, including entering upon the arena of Great Lent, is the attempt to understand what within ourselves, within our life’s circumstances, dictates our sinful behavior. The holy Great Fast is given to us to ascend to virtues from strength to strength. The time of Great Lent gives us the chance to spiritually concentrate, to think of the most important thing: distinguishing sin from righteousness. The arena of the Holy Quadragesima is given to us to become spiritually strong, and for this the Church offers the most necessary, the easiest and the most effective means for man: prayer, abstinence, and repentance. The purpose of Lent consists in achieving an inner change. Lent must not become an occasion for us to fall into the most grievous sin—the sin of pride and vainglory. The Lord so loves us that He does not prevent us from disfiguring ourselves with sin. He waits for man to understand that it’s impossible to live that way, for when he comes to his senses, and when he, armed with the power of God—His grace—gradually begins to dislodge the world from his life and from his heart. After all, this process is not an instant, but an entire life, in which we manifest ourselves as the image of God, as those whom the Lord has entrusted to be His reflection in this world. Therefore, we will not despair and will not grieve, even if it doesn’t work out for us and the devil attacks us. But rather we will see in this great trust on the part of God, Who wants us, all the same, to remain His beloved children, and grow into the full measure of the image of God, becoming His likeness; becoming, as St. Macarius the Great writes, God after God, and that those people who surround us would become the same for us. Then we can truly grow; then we can truly inherit the Heavenly Kingdom, which has already come in power and grace, which nourishes our languishing strength.
