The performance, “Psalms and Hymns,” presented Orthodox liturgical pieces in English especially meant to highlight the Biblical foundations of Orthodox Christian worship, which is especially relevant as about a hundred people who had never been to an Orthodox church before came to the concert thanks to a write-up in the regional newspaper. Drawing especially on the thousand-year-old tradition of monastic singing in Russia, the program included examples of Znamenny Chant as well as more recent arrangements by composers from the Moscow Synodal School and the Trinity-Saint Sergius Lavra. Also included on the program were arrangements by the late Deacon Sergei Trubachev an original work by Mr. Sheehan, based on Znamenny chant, and a Byzantine-style psalm popular on Mt. Athos. Proceeds from the concert will go to benefit seminarians of St. Tikhon’s. A video clip from the concert is available below: 23 февраля 2017 г. Tweet On the Dormition of the Theotokos Jesse Dominick      There are many feasts of the Mother of God, commemorating the events of her life, her intercessions for us after her death, and her innumerable miraculous icons. Her most significant and solemn feast is certainly her Dormition which includes her bodily Assumption, commemorated on August 15/28 and preceded by two weeks of fasting. The feast is often known as the “summer Pascha,” and is celebrated with great pomp throughout the Orthodox world. For instance, in Jerusalem on August 12/25 a Liturgy is served at Little Gethsemane, followed by a Molieben and a procession with her burial shroud to her sepulcher in Gethsemane proper, in which all the members of the Russian Spiritual Mission participate. On the morning of August 14/27 the clergy, monastics, and faithful embark upon a two-hour procession from the Jerusalem Patriarchate which culminates in the service of Lamentations at the Gethsemane Skete, where is placed the burial shroud of the Mother of God amidst fragrant flowers and myrtle and adorned with precious coverings. On the Apodosis of the feast (August 23/Sept. 5) the burial shroud is returned in another solemn procession. This is but one of the celebrations throughout the Orthodox world that could be described that demonstrate the great love for the Theotokos that resides in the hearts of the Orthodox faithful.      Following the resolution of the Nestorian controversy in 433, public veneration of the Theotokos in liturgical and artistic settings took on greater importance and spread rapidly. Several churches and monasteries were built in her honor in the fifth century, and she was celebrated throughout the whole empire on a day before or after the Nativity since the late fourth century. The ancient Armenian lectionary from Jerusalem compiled between 412 and 439 lists the commemoration of the Mother of God on August 15 in the Church of the Kathisma, and the feast was made obligatory in the East as a celebration of her Dormition by Emperor Maurice (582-602).

Tweet Нравится Archaeologists discover mysterious new Dead Sea scrolls Jerusalem, December 30, 2016      New scrolls have been found on the territory of the Cave of Skulls in the mountainous area not far from the Dead Sea. Archaeologists discovered the scroll fragments, although the language in which the ancient texts are written is unknown to linguists, reports TsarGrad . So far it has been established that they are not related to the Aramaic language group which the other Qumran manuscripts are written in. “We’re trying to compare the fragments with other known texts found in the Judean Desert,” one of the researchers told journalists. “So far it’s only clear that we have found manuscripts of an unknown origin.” The new Dead Sea scroll fragments were lying haphazardly—probably looters had come across them before. Moreover, archaeologists also discovered wooden combs, beads, ceramic vessels and fragments and fabric fragments at the same place. Interestingly, the first scrolls were found quite accidentally. A Bedouin shepherd tells about how he threw a rock into some caves near Qumran and heard an unusual cracking sound. It turns out that the rock fell into a pitcher in which were found the Dead Sea Scrolls. They managed to find 870 scrolls in the Judean Desert from 1947 to 1956, some of which are analogous to the world famous Ten Commandments. Moreover, some of the scrolls were found in their original size, while some were found in fragments or completely destroyed over time. Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 31 декабря 2016 г. Tweet Нравится Catch a Fire: An Athonite Missionary to America On Elder Ephraim, Founder and Elder of St. Anthony " s Monastery Jesse Dominick      The following paper was written for the class “America and Orthodoxy” in the Master of Divinity program at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in the spring of 2010. The assignment was to write about a living or historical figure within Orthodoxy in America, discussing his biography, teachings and work, his strengths, and any weaknesses or struggles faced. January 17/30 the holy Orthodox Church celebrates St. Anthony the Great, known as the father of monasticism. Innumerable souls have been inspired and set ablaze by his memory and example and his continuing prayers for the faithful, and especially on Mt. Athos, the Holy Mountain which is entirely dedicated to Orthodox monasticism. From the Holy Mountain to America has come one such soul, inspired by St. Anthony. Elder Ephraim received the unbroken monastic tradition from his spiritual father, the great Elder Joseph the Hesychast, and has brought it to North America in the form of the seventeen monasteries he has founded throughout America and Canada, including the main monastery in Florence, AZ, dedicated to St. Anthony the Great, where Elder Ephraim lives and serves as spiritual guide to all who come thirsting for spiritual guidance. In American Orthodoxy, rife with controversy as it is, one of the most controversial personalities is Elder Ephraim, former abbot of Philotheou Monastery, who currently lives at St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery in Florence, AZ. The mere mention of his name evokes strong emotions—people tend to either love or revile him. It is not uncommon to hear him referred to as the holiest man alive, or conversely as a fanatical cult-leading guru. Either way, his establishment of seventeen monasteries in North America in a decade is certainly an impressive feat. It is said that the state of monasticism in a local Church is a microcosm of the state of that entire local Church, and thus America is undoubtedly in need of strong monasteries that can provide clear, Patristic guidance. Elder Ephraim came to America in response to the pleas of the faithful to provide this guidance, but in doing so many questions have been raised concerning the nature of Orthodox monasticism and teachings. To assess his role and importance for American Orthodoxy it is helpful to investigate his life and spiritual development, which will provide insight into him whom Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos says “received fire, and ... has imparted this fire ... to the Church in America that has great need of it.”

Tweet Нравится Newly-elected abbot of St. Panteleimon’s Monastery ordained as hieromonk Mt. Athos, October 14, 2016      The feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos was solemnly celebrated on October 14 at the Russian St. Panteleimon’s Monastery on Mt. Athos, reports Russian Athos . About 500 pilgrims from various countries around the world were able to participate that day in the festive Divine Liturgy and to venerate the relics of the monastery. Representatives of a number of Russian kellias on Athos were present as well. The atmosphere was festive and reverent. The festive Liturgy in the Protection Cathedral of St. Panteleimon’s Monastery was celebrated by three hierarchs: Met. Zinovy (Korzinkin) of Saransk and Mordovia, Abp. Jonathan (Tsvetkov) of Abakhan and Khakassia, and Bp. Barsanuphy (Stolyar) of Borodyansk, vicar of the Kiev diocese. During the Liturgy Abp. Jonathan ordained the newly-elected abbot of the monastery, Hierodeacon Evlogy (Ivanov) as a hieromonk.                In the morning after the Liturgy a festive Moleben to the Most Holy Theotokos was also served.    The miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos in the monastery’s Protection Cathedral is remembered in the Athonite monastery on this day. As is known, the cathedral is connected with many signs and appearances of the Mother of God, for which it is often referred to as the Miraculous Church, like the cathedral of the Kiev Caves Lavra. Here, twice, in 1862 and 1863, the Most Holy Theotokos repeated the miracle she performed of old in Blachernae. According to a number of surviving eyewitness testimonies, in those years on the day of the Holy Protection the Mother of God was clearly seen by many worshipers in the monastery church with outstretched Omophorion. Recollections of it are preserved in the journals of many brothers, and even in that of Elder Jerome (Solomentsov). Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 15 октября 2016 г. Athos was held on October 2, 2016, with Hierodeacon Evlogy (Ivanov) being chosen as the new superior, reports a correspondent of Russian Athos . The voting procedure was according to the standing so-called “Athos Constitution,” approved by the Greek administration and parliament in 1926, according to which monks having been tonsured for no less than six years (or for those tonsured in another monastery, having lived in the monastery for the aforementioned timeframe) are allowed to participate in voting. Thus, thirty-seven of the 103 monks laboring in the monastery took part in the vote. The election was conducted by secret ballot in two rounds. The newly-elected igumen will be enthroned after the confirmation of the Sacred Community of Mt. Athos and the Patriarch of Constantinople. Hierodeacon Evlogy (in the world Michael Nikolaievich Ivanov) is a native of the Chelyabinsk region, born on October 12, 1958. He was tonsured into the mantia in the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra on November 25, 1985, and ordained there on December 23, 1986. Tweet Нравится Ongoing 40 Days for Life Campaign Seeks to End Genocide of Abortion Jesse Dominick      The latest campaign of “ 40 Days for Life ” is currently underway, having begun on September 23 and ending on November 1. 40 Days for Life is an international pro-life campaign aimed at “a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families.” The duration of forty days was taken from the many Scriptural witnesses to God transforming lives, communities, and the whole world following a forty-day endeavor. The mission of the 40 Days for Life campaigns is to bring Christians together “with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion,” utilizing the three-pronged peaceful “attack” of prayer and fasting , constant vigil, and community outreach.      By the word of the Lord Himself some demons can only be overcome by prayer and fasting and so the campaign calls upon Christians and churches everywhere to offer a sacrifice of forty days of prayer and fasting to end the scourge of abortion. Every day specific prayer requests are given, including for women who are at risk of having an abortion, the innocent children at risk of perishing, those who already carry the pain of an abortion, Planned Parenthood and other abortion facility workers, governmental leaders, as well as for revival and repentance and healing throughout the nation. Participants are also encouraged to fast—from food, from entertainment, from “apathy and indifference,” etc., in an effort to concentrate more intently on spreading the Gospel of Christ and offering a contrite heart to God. As far as is possible, a forty-day, non-stop, around-the-clock vigil is to be kept outside a Planned Parenthood or other abortion facility in order to send a peaceful but powerful message about the reality of abortion to the workers and patrons of the facilities. Community outreach is accomplished through news stories, talk show appearances, opinion pieces, a door-to-door petition and education drive, and flyer distribution, among many other activities in an effort to proclaim the value of life and the peace of Christ to those who may never enter a church.

Tweet Нравится Patriarch Theodoros II: no place for politics in Church matters Moscow, December 1, 2016      Politicians should not interfere in Church matters, and it’s necessary to observe the principle of the indivisibility of the Church, declared Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa in an interview with RIA-Novosti , commenting on the situation with the efforts to create an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ukraine. “I know Ukraine very well—both bishops and laity—and have a very good understanding about what incentives the people are pursuing, who are trying now to sow discord in Ukraine. From the very beginning, when the problem of the Church schism had only just arisen, the Alexandrian Patriarchate and I, as its representative, have taken the position that the Ukrainian Church is an integral part of the Russian Orthodox Church. When I served the Divine Liturgy in the Kiev Caves Lavra I stated that for the Alexandrian Church the canonical primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and All Ukraine. Then when the schismatics attempted to forcibly enter, without invitation, into the Holy Trinity church which was then a podvoriye of the Alexandrian Church in Odessa, I stood in the doorway and said: ‘It’s not going to happen.’ The ancient Alexandrian Church formulates its position thus: we stand before God together with the Russian Orthodox Church and call for the Orthodox Church to be one and undivided, as it always has been. There is no place for politics in Church matters. Politicians come and go, but the Church abides unto the ages of ages,” said the primate of the Alexandrian Church. There is currently operating in Ukraine the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is a self-governing part of the Moscow Patriarchate, and also the ecclesial structures, unrecognized by the Orthodox world, the “Kievan Patriarchate,” and the “Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.”    Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru

Tweet Нравится St. Tikhon of Moscow " s Gift to America The Monastery of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk Jesse Dominick      On September 26/October 9, the Orthodox Church commemorates the 1989 glorification of New Hiero-confessor Tikhon (Bellavin), patriarch of Moscow and all Russia. St. Tikhon is of course best remembered as the first Patriarch of Russia, elected in 1918, since the 1721 abolition of the patriarchate by Peter I. He guided the Church as a firm and steady anchor during the early years of the communist regime, suffering imprisonment in Donskoy Monastery from 1922 to 1923 for opposing the government’s confiscation of Church property. He entered into repose on the great feast of Annunciation in 1925 and is considered a confessor of the Orthodox faith. Before taking up the yoke of arch-pastor for the entire Russian nation, St. Tikhon served as a missionary bishop in the burgeoning American mission. He was appointed as bishop of the Aleutians and Alaska in 1898 and he traveled throughout America, visiting parishes, comforting the faithful, and consecrating new parishes. In 1905 he was raised to the dignity of archbishop and he relocated the center of the diocese to New York, before being called back to Russia in 1907. St. Tikhon of Moscow and St. Tikhon of Zadonsk holding the monastery church at St. Tikhon " s One of his great and lasting achievements in America is surely the founding of St. Tikhon’s Monastery in South Canaan, PA in 1905, named for his own patron, St. Tikhon the Wonderworker of Zadonsk . St. Tikhon’s is the oldest Orthodox monastery in America and throughout its 110 years, while it has known highs and lows, it has become a center of Orthodoxy in America, offering up countless liturgies and prayers as sweet incense before the throne of God, enjoying the presence of many saints, and, along with the seminary established in 1938, molding and refining innumerable servants of Christ’s Church in the form of monastics, clergymen, and hierarchs. Every year the monastic, seminary, and parish community of St. Tikhon’s commemorates the Sunday nearest to St. Tikhon’s October 9 th feast as its “Founder’s Day” with a festive liturgy and meal, to which all are warmly welcomed.

Tweet Нравится To successfully fight abortion the government must lead, says Deputy Milonov Moscow, October 31, 2016      State Duma Deputy Vitaly Milonov believes that the fight against abortion should be waged on the state level, reports Interfax . “For starters, the government should give people a clear understanding of what the abortion procedure really is: it’s not a cosmetic operation, not preventative, not for recovery—it’s the termination of human life!” said the deputy in an interview published in “Parliamentary Gazette” on Friday. Milonov is convinced that the artificial termination of pregnancy was included in the list of services covered under mandatory health insurance by “some mistake.” “What’s the policy of obligatory medical insurance? It’s a guarantee that the state medical fund takes upon itself the function of healing people. But abortion is not healing, but quite the opposite: it’s harm to a woman’s health and the ending of a baby’s life,” he said. In his opinion, the state simply is not in the right to pay for services for women who want to kill their own child. “So why don’t we kill the elderly? There’s more reasons for that: they’re useless, they’re a liability, they smell, they get a small pension, they take up room in the apartment, they only have a short time left,” added Milonov.
