Tweet Нравится “Miracle of St. Januarius” repeated in Naples cathedral Naples, September 19, 2016      The so-called “miracle of St. Januarius,” known since the end of the fourteenth century, once again occurred on Monday in the Naples cathedral during a solemn Mass, reports RIA-Novosti . That the dried blood of the Naples patron, sealed in a special capsule, again turned to liquid Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe announced. The liquefaction of the dried liquid occurred at 10:38 local time. Thousands of faithful, gathered in the church, met the good news with exuberant applause. The dried blood, considered the blood of the patron saint of Naples, as the Church affirms, becomes liquid three times a year: September 19, when believers glorify the martyr; December 16, when the Neapolitans mark the anniversary of the miraculous deliverance from the 1631 Vesuvius eruption by the saint’s intercessions, and finally, on the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, when the numerous relocations of the holy relics are commemorated. Sometimes the “miracle” occurs immediately, but sometimes it requires a few days of prayer. A number of scientific theories have been put forth to explain the phenomenon, but Neapolitans themselves believe in the miracle and hope in St. Januarius to never leave the city residents in times of trouble. St. Januarius is a hieromartyr of the late third-early fourth centuries, honored by both the Orthodox Church and Catholic communities. He suffered for preaching Christ during the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian. Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 20 сентября 2016 г. " Where your treasure is, there your heart is. " The state of Church singing in America An interview with choirmaster Benedict Sheehan Jesse Dominick , Benedict Sheehan Benedict Sheehan is a composer, conductor, arranger, writer about, and teacher of, music. He currently plies his trade at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary and Monastery, where, since 2010, he has taught Orthodox liturgical music and directed the choirs. Benedict is also a regular clinician in Orthodox choral singing around the United States. His musical education includes a Bachelor of Music in Composition at Westminster Choir College, private studies under Vladimir Morosan and Vladimir Gorbik, and a Master of Music in Conducting at Bard College Conservatory of Music. He also has a Master of Divinity from St. Tikhon’s Seminary. Benedict is a regular contributor to several online publications, including Orthodox Arts Journal and the Orthodox Christian Network (OCN). Four of his liturgical pieces are currently in print with Musica Russica, and his first complete album as a composer, entitled “Till Morn Eternal Breaks: Sacred Choral Music of Benedict Sheehan,” will be released in November from St. Tikhon’s Monastery Press. Benedict and Maria, together with their six daughters, live in Pennsylvania. Do we take our Church music for granted? What is the importance of musical training for choirs? What does music mean for our prayer life, and what can we do to raise the level of singing in our Orthodox Churches? Benedict sat down with our correspondent to speak about the state of Orthodox Church music in America. Choirmaster Benedict Sheehan      —What would you say about the state of Orthodox Church music in America? How would you assess it? —I would say that we’re at a low point in our history. There’s certainly a general decline in Orthodox churches in America overall. The numbers are shrinking. We hear all these stories about the declining parishes. We see declining parishes. We see growing parishes also, but generally what everybody seems to say is that the numbers are declining. It shouldn’t then come as a surprise that the overall level of musical quality is declining too. But, what I find to be a more telling fact is that we’ve been in a state of musical decline for long enough that now it’s the new norm, and so even parishes that are thriving and successful have musical standards that in any other context would be an embarrassment.

“If Only We Would Take Seriously Our Spiritual Lives, We Would All Be Saints:” A Conversation with Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) Part 2 Jesse Dominick , Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) See Part 1 While visiting Moscow during the month of June, Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg), rector of the Sts. Cyril & Athanasius Institute for Orthodox Studies in San Francisco and an Archimandrite of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, visited Sretensky Monastery for an interview with Pravoslavie.ru. Father Irenei, a scholar of patristic and early Church studies, is also known as the founder of the Monachos internet forum, dedicated to the study of Orthodoxy through its patristic and monastic heritage, and as the host of the “A Word from the Holy Fathers” podcast on Ancient Faith Radio. This is the second part of our interview with Father Irenei, which focuses chiefly on the state of Orthodox scholarship and sanctity. Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) at Sretensky Seminary      —In a podcast with Archpriest Josiah Trenham you spoke about what you believe is the poor state of our Orthodox scholarship today. What areas are you concerned about and what do you see as the fundamental need from Orthodox scholarship, and how can we improve our scholarship while remaining true to the Tradition? —The fundamental problem that we face in Orthodox scholarship is that we as scholars within Orthodoxy (and I speak here very broadly, including students, professors—broadly speaking everyone who’s involved in Orthodox scholarship) tend to be far too influenced by a secular approach to the study of theology of the Church. Very pious people, from a very churched perspective, go about studying and writing about theological themes in a secular way, so that the end result—the studies that we see published, whether on the Fathers of the Church, or the history of the Church, or the life of the Church—regularly end up being indistinguishable in their form and in their structure from studies that would be produced by secular scholars about Plato or about the history of the American Civil War. The theme might be religious, but the way the scholarship is done, the way conclusions are drawn, the way information is presented, is largely according to a common secular model.

The Church teaches that we can depict Christ in iconography because He became incarnate, taking on a visible body. Thus the icons are a safeguard to the dogma of the Incarnation. On this Sunday we process with holy icons, professing the triumph of Truth over falsehood. This video presents highlights of the Divine Liturgy and procession with the holy icons on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, 2017, at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi. Pemptousia 23 марта 2017 г. Elder Ephraim came to America in response to the pleas of the faithful to provide this guidance, but in doing so many questions have been raised concerning the nature of Orthodox monasticism and teachings. To assess his role and importance for American Orthodoxy it is helpful to investigate his life and spiritual development, which will provide insight into him whom Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos says “received fire, and ... has imparted this fire ... to the Church in America that has great need of it.” The Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi The Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi December 17/30 the holy Orthodox Church commemorates Sts. Metropolitan Jeremiah of Gortynos: “We should not rush to recognize the results of the Crete Council. We need a new discussion of the ‘Relationship of the Orthodox Church with the Rest of the Christian World’ document” December 13, 2016 The hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Church has commented on the results of the Crete Council and criticized the document “Relationship of the Orthodox Church with the Rest of the Christian World.” The main points of his statement are published here:    1. “The Crete Council should have clarified the situation (to protect believers from temptation) and should have publicly condemned the two main heresies of our times—papism and ecumenism.” 2. Instead, “the Crete Council not only did not condemn a single heresy, but rather called them ‘Churches.’” 3. “The Church possesses all the fullness of truth and cannot err. If it errs it ceases being the Church. In turn, heresy is delusion. 4. Therefore, using the expression “non-Orthodox Churches” we combine incompatible things: we confess that the Church can err, but heretics to be bearers of truth. It’s absurd.” 5. “The decision of whether to recognize the Crete Council will be jointly made by the whole hierarchy of the Greek Church.” 6. “The documents of the Crete Council can be amended by the next Holy and Great Council. They can be improved for the sake of achieving pan-Orthodox consensus, as the Antiochian, Russian, Bulgarian, and Georgian Churches did not participate in the work of the Crete Council. The usual practice for councils in the past was to hold several meetings over the course of many years, and then they were reckoned in Church consciousness as part of one council.” 7. “Expression of the Orthodox faith requires a precise and unambiguous formulation, full of deep theological meaning. Our Church has fought for accurate expressions of the dogmas of our faith. Today we need prayer and discernment. We must avoid hasty and reckless steps.” Translated by Jesse Dominick AgionOros.ru 14 декабря 2016 г. Russian Church trying to find a place for the closed Oxford museum built by teacher of children of Nicholas II Source: Interfax-Religion Moscow, October 7, 2016      The Sourozh Diocese (combining parishes of the Russian Church in Great Britain and Ireland) is seeking to resolve the issue with a closed chapel-museum dedicated to the family of Nicholas II in Oxford. It was built by Archimandrite Nicholas (Gibbes), the teacher of the children of the last Russian emperor. “Presently our parish of St. Nicholas in Oxford is laboring to find a permanent place of habitation for the sacred items left behind by Archimandrite Nicholas (Gibbes), and we hope this work will be crowned with success,” stated Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh in an interview Friday with Interfax-Religion. According to him, after the death in the early 1990s of the adopted son of Archimandrite Nicholas, George Gibbes, the chapel was closed. Then for some time it was set up in the “Luton Hoo” estate in Hertfordshire County, but financial difficulties led to the space’s closing. Archimandrite Nicholas (in the world Charles Sydney Gibbes) was the English teacher for the children of Nicholas II, particularly of the Tsarevich Alexei. With ten years of service in the Russian imperial court he became a confidant of the royal family, even following them into exile in Siberia. In 1934 he accepted Orthodoxy with the name Alexei (in honor of the Tsarevich Alexei), and in the next year monasticism with the name Nicholas (in honor of Nicholas II). He founded a parish in London and then in Oxford. He remained faithful his whole life to the memory of the royal family and managed to save many of their relics. In 1945 Fr. Nicholas bought three cottages in Oxford, keeping the items in one of them, including an icon which Tsarina Alexandra Fedorovna entrusted to him in Tobolsk, including a dedicatory inscription, a pair of the emperor’s high boots, his handkerchief, and a bell and pencil case belonging to the Tsarevich Alexei. In 1946 he founded a museum in memory of the royal family in one of the three cottages. The large part of the items preserved there were taken from them at Ipatiev House, where Nicholas II’s family was shot, and transferred to Beijing. The priest took them with him everywhere from that time. As reported, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia will visit London October 15-18 for the 300 year anniversary of the presence of Russian Orthodoxy in the British Isles. Referring to the role of political parties in the modern crisis, the archbishop said: “We must clarify what we need, how we see the future of our children and families, and what aspirations we have. The time has come for us to wonder: ‘Perhaps it’s worth it to support not parties, but concrete people?’” The primate’s words correspond with the teachings of St. Paisios the Athonite. To the question “who should we vote for?” the saint answered: “For whoever is closer to the Church. Don’t vote for parties which call themselves Christian… We shouldn’t divide along party lines. Tweet Нравится Metropolitan of Veroia: Law allowing abortion is destroying mankind Athens, October 15, 2016      Metropolitan Panteleimon of the Greek Orthodox Church spoke to the film crew of sobor.by about his stance towards the initiative to ban abortion in Russia. “Regarding the law allowing abortion—this law is destroying mankind. Our Local Church, and every Church of Christ has always stood against the legalization of abortion. And although the government has legalized abortion, we do not believe it is legitimate. We honor the law of God, and according to the law of God, abortion is murder. Inasmuch as this action is murder, it destroys human life, and the Church stands against it. The Church always clearly expresses its position, and can do so in every homily. But, unfortunately, these laws, especially those which have come to us from the West, ruin our people. Abortion is condemned by the fathers of the Church and is condemned by Church canons. But firstly, it is condemned by God. But despite the Church’s ban, unfortunately, a law allowing abortion was passed. May God grant that one day this law here and in Russia would be abolished. And, truly, abortion is not just a spiritual sin, but it is the destruction of the state itself, which is weakened by it. Therefore in Greece, as many believe, within a few years there will be only the elderly, and the young will be quite few, because there are so many abortions. They kill thousands and thousands of people, like in war.” Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 15 октября 2016 г.
