St. Herman " s Monastery Celebrates the 33rd Anniversary of the Repose of Fr. Seraphim Rose/Православие.Ru St. Herman " s Monastery Celebrates the 33rd Anniversary of the Repose of Fr. Seraphim Rose Jesse Dominick Platina, CA, September 3, 2015      August 20/September 2 marked the thirty-third anniversary of the falling asleep in the Lord of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose of blessed memory. Abbot Damascene and the brotherhood of St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, CA, of which Fr. Seraphim was the co-founder, celebrated simply this joyous feast of the monastery with several visiting clergy and pilgrims. On the evening of August 19/September 1 the commemoration began with Vespers in the main church of the monastery, with Metropolitan Saba of the Georgian Apostolic Orthodox Church in North America in attendance along with two Georgian priests, Frs. Evtimi and Arsenie. Fr. Seraphim reposed during the period of the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, to whom he was greatly devoted. The brotherhood choir chanted hymns in praise of the Mother of God and her bodily assumption into Heaven, fitting for the celebration of America’s own blessed Seraphim who awaits the bodily resurrection. Metropolitan Saba serving the Pannikhida for Fr. Seraphim Following Vespers the gathered faithful processed up the hill to Fr. Seraphim’s grave at the Entrance of the Theotokos “Skete,” where a Pannikhida was served in his honor in three languages, demonstrating that Fr. Seraphim is indeed, in the words of Hieroschemamonk Ambrose, a “universal saint.” Fr. Damascene and the monastery’s Fr. Paisy served in English, along with Met. Saba serving in Georgian, and Archimandrite Ilarion of the Monastery of the Holy Archangels Gabriel and Michael in Draganac, in Kosovo, Serbia who arrived during the Pannikhida, serving in Serbian. Following the service Fr. Damascene offered some brief words of welcome to the visiting clergy and pilgrims, and spoke of Fr. Seraphim’s life in terms of “suffering Orthodoxy.” He noted that Fr. Seraphim always sought the truth, suffering for want of it, and when he found the Truth in the Person of Jesus Christ, he suffered in service of Him. “He found that the Truth is discovered in suffering, and in order to go deeper into the Truth you have to suffer for it, and you draw closer to God in pain of heart and you pray to God with pain of heart. This is how you draw closer to Him and this is also how you pray for others” Fr. Damascene stated. He continued, “In this way he was very similar to elders of our times such as Elder Paisios of Mt. Athos and also Elder Porphyrios.”

Tweet Нравится Caroling in Christmas in Glen Rock, PA Jesse Dominick      Christians, awake! salute this happy morn Whereon the Saviour of this world was born. Rise to adore the mystery of love, Which hosts of Angels chanted from above. With them the joyful tidings first begun Of God incarnate and the Virgin's Son. Then to the watchful shepherds it was told. Who heard the angelic herald's voice, behold I bring glad tidings of a Saviour's birth To you and all the nations upon earth. This day hath God fulfilled His promised word. This day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord. (“Christmas Hymn” by John Byrom) It’s a quiet little place in Southern York County, PA of a humble population of 2,000. There’s only one traffic light in the whole town. Most of the year the strongest attraction is the Mignano Family Restaurant, with authentic Italian food made by authentic Italians. But ask anyone who has lived in Glen Rock, PA and they’ll tell you there’s only one place to be on the night of Christmas Eve into Christmas: huddled under that one traffic light in the center of the town at midnight, heralding our Lord’s salvific entrance into the world with hymns of nineteenth-century England. Photo: http://www.glenrockcarolers.org/ There you will find the unique spectacle of uniformed men set to brave the wintery night, year in and year out, to march through the streets of Glen Rock till early morn, bringing the joy of the Nativity to those who follow behind them, or who can manage to rouse themselves as these Glen Rock Carolers pass by their house. 2017 marks the 170th anniversary of this unique tradition. It goes back to 1837, to the founding of Glen Rock by William Heathcote, who bought some land and built a wool mill by the Codorus Creek, which led to the creation of Glen Rock. The following year Charles Heathcote, Mark Radcliffe, and George Shaw, nephews of William, left their homes in Yorkshire, England to join the fledgling town in the new world and churn out thirty pounds of rope a day. It was at the end of that year that the tradition of the Glen Rock Carolers, to become the town’s pride over the coming years, began.

Tweet Нравится Ekaterinburg to host unique art demonstration against abortion Ekaterinburg, November 25, 2016 “One of Us”      The Ekaterinburg Diocese is arranging the unique flash mob “One of Us” on Friday evening, directed against abortion. From 6:00 to 8:00 Orthodox faithful will lay out on the Plotinka embankment a ten-meter image of an eight-week-old embryo inside its mother’s womb from 600 lit lampadas, reports the diocesean website . The embryo will be comparable in size to the height of a three-story building, and the installation, believes the diocese, will be easily seen from the bridge on Lenin Avenue. The art demonstration “One of Us” was thought up by the diocesan Center for the Protection of Motherhood “Cradle” and first held in Ekaterinburg in the spring of 2014. “We choose life! We kindle the light!—with such a call and spirit, everyone of all ages who wants to, with the help of colored lampadas and an outline of the image on the ground, will create the image of an eight-week-old embryo with the inscription “One of Us” underneath. " Light a lampada in his memory "      “Each of us, just like all of mankind in the past, present, and future, was the same eight-week-old baby in our mother’s womb,” said the employee of the “Cradle” Center for the Protection of Motherhood of the Social Services Department of the Ekaterinburg Diocese Elena Rusakova. “And we are very lucky that we were born into this world, that we have the possibility to plan our futures, to start our families—just to live! The demonstration ‘One of Us’ is designed to remind us that every child, while still in its mother’s womb really wants to live, and each wants to be born into this world. Unfortunately, our world is very cruel, and how cruel parents are when they rashly decide to deprive themselves of that which is most dear on earth—the happiness of being a mother and father and the smile and laugh of their own child, which cannot be quantified by any money or square meters.” Translated by Jesse Dominick

Tweet Нравится Icons miraculously renew themselves in Novosibirsk church Meret, Russia, November 25, 2016      Residents of the village of Meret in the Suzun region have become witnesses to something amazing. The faces on several icons in a local church have altered themselves, which was not the work of restorers, according to the clergy, reports Vn.ru . Fr. Vladimir, rector of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, explains: “The images renewed themselves. The archangels are showing through. The icon was dark and it was hard to see the face. But after some time the faces of the archangels appeared and the icon itself is somewhat renewed.” According to the local priest, with every day the faded paint becomes brighter and the faces of the saints appear more distinctly. Many of these icons returned to the church after many, many years. In Soviet times the locals hid them in attics and crawl spaces. The church was first turned into a club, then a bar which later burned down. The new church was built in the 90s. Miracles began from that time, the local residents said. “It happens not because people are good or bad. It’s needed for strengthening the faith, not only of the laity, but of priests too, unfortunately, because we’re running in circles, spinning around, and we don’t see any results. Here another icon was also renewed—St. Nicholas the Wonderworker,” explained Fr. Vladimir. There is one other holy object in the Meret church. In the summer of 2002, the Golgotha Cross from the old church was found in the attic of one of the homes. According to the recollection of the older residents, the cross is already more than 120 years old. Apparently, after closing the church the cross was taken and hidden by the parishioners. The village residents say that the most important thing is that faith be revived in the people again. The people of Meret are sure that this will not be the final miracle in their church.    Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravoslavie.ru 25 ноября 2016 г.

Tweet Нравится St. Basil, the Great Visionary of Creation Jesse Dominick      In his homilies on January 1, the day that the Church commemorates St. Basil the Great, Fr. Thomas Hopko loved to say, quoting His Grace Archbishop Dimitry (Royster) , “Gregory is the Theologian, John is the Golden-mouthed, but only Basil is the Great .” As Fr. Hopko would explain, St. Basil was a man of numerous gifts and talents. He is remembered as a great theologian, a bulwark against heresies, a pastor, a teacher, a philanthropist , a rhetorician, an ascetic, and generally one of the greatest saints to ever grace the Church of Christ. Among these many laurels, as a theologian St. Basil is distinguished as a luminous visionary of the dogma of creation. His Hexaemeron , or commentary on the six days of creation, delivered as a series of nine sermons during Lent sometime around 370 AD, has stood the test of time to become the Church’s most authoritative text on the matter. That this is the case can be discerned not only in studying the unbroken chain of Church Tradition, continuing to our very day, into which St. Basil placed himself, thereby finding agreement between his teachings and that of the saints for twenty centuries, but can be plainly seen in the praise that several other righteous fathers and respected theologians have heaped upon him, and specifically for his Hexaemeron. A few years later, St. Ambrose of Milan delivered his own homiletical Hexaemeron which is in large part an expansion upon the work of St. Basil. Although he never mentions the great Cappadocian by name, he does refer to his description of day and nighttime as from an “expert author” who has “precedence over us whether in time or in ability.” St. Jerome, in his On Illustrious Men in which he recounts the lives and works of the great saints of the Church up to his day, writes that St. Basil composed an “admirable carefully written book” on the days of creation. And in the seventh century, St. Anastasius of Sinai wrote in his Hexaemeron : “Basil had divine thoughts and spoke sublimely.”

According to Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Patras, it was a “great honor and blessing” for the residents of the city to receive such a relic in such difficult times for Greece and all of Orthodoxy. Accompanying the Belt of the Theotokos, the abbot of Vatopedi, Archimandrite Ephraim noted that “the Theotokos performs miracles and is bringing the people comfort and a blessing.” The Athonite relic will remain in the cathedral of St. Andrew the First-Called until November 9.           The flood of faithful desiring to venerate the Belt of the Theotokos has not dried up. Tweet Нравится With Love for Truth On Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia II and the visit of Pope Francis to Georgia Jesse Dominick      From Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 Pope Francis visited the ancient Orthodox nation of Georgia, celebrating Mass in a Tbilisi stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1 for the capital’s small Catholic population. Hierarchs of the Georgian Orthodox Church were noticeably absent. As it should be. The media is variously reporting the absence of any official Georgian Orthodox delegation as a “ shun ,” a “ snub ,” and that the Pope was met “ with disregard .” That such headlines are false and inflammatory is obvious in that the pope visited the nation by the invitation of the president and His Holiness Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia II himself, who greeted him at the airport and met with him in an official capacity. Moreover, the pope was welcomed to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta where he exchanged speeches with His Holiness in the presence of a number of hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and faithful. What we see is that, in fact, the pope was met with the same respect given to any visiting dignitary. The pope himself, upon his departure, expressed his gratitude at being so warmly received. But His Holiness Ilia II also respectfully maintained his own integrity and that of the Orthodox faith and Church, given to us by Christ through His Apostles. At Saturday’s Mass, Pope Francis declared : ““We should work together. We should respect each other and pray together. This is ecumenism.” It is precisely this ecumenism that the Georgian Orthodox Church understands, and rightfully rejects, not out of any hatred or chauvinism, but the righteous desire to preserve intact the deposit of faith entrusted to the hierarchs and all the faithful. The Church and its faithful are guided by the dictum “lex orandi, lex credendi”—the rule of prayer is the rule of faith—that is, the Church believes what it prays, and prays what it believes, and therefore, unity of faith is an obvious and necessary presupposition for unity in prayer.

Workers speak about unusual phenomena around Holy Sepulchre November 17, 2016      The first thing that surprised the workers was the “sweet aroma” they smelled as they drew near to the tomb. As reported by the Catholic Culture agency, the smell is reminiscent of the floral smell which is often spoken about in ancient sources describing the appearances of saints, including the Most Holy Theotokos. The workers also reported that some electronic devices lying around the tomb began to fail inexplicably. Some of them turned out to be completely broken. A possible explanation is powerful electromagnetic radiation. Restoration work is now underway on the Aedicule. In particular, the restorers are cleaning the facing side of the rock on which the body of Jesus Christ was laid. On October 26 archaeologists removed the slab from the Holy Sepulchre (for the first time in 450 years). Beneath it they found another marble slab with a cross. Historians believe it was made during the Crusades. The funeral bed itself turned out to be completely undamaged, although the walls of the cave in which it was located were destroyed together with the original building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the eleventh century. “It’s absolutely amazing. My knees are shaking, because I didn’t expect this… We can’t say with absolutely certainty at first glance that there is clear evidence that the tomb wasn’t damaged this whole time. After all, scientists and historians have been working on these questions for many decades,” said archaeologist Frederick Hibert. The tomb of the Lord is hewn from a natural rock tomb from the Second Temple period, in which is a stone funerary bed (6.6 ft. x 2.6 ft., 2 ft. from the ground). The present space, as the previous cave which was destroyed in 1009, is called the Holy Sepulchre. This space, arranged as an aedicule, symbolizes the cave in which the Body of Christ was buried. To this day, only the bed, part of the walls of the cave and part of the entrance have been preserved. By the middle of the sixteenth century the bed was seriously damaged by pilgrims trying to break off particles of the shrine. In 1555 the bed was covered with a white marble slab to prevent such attempts. Translated by Jesse Dominick Pravmir.ru 22 ноября 2016 г. “The Only Voice with Which Any Orthodox Christian is Entitled to Speak is the Voice of the Church:” A Conversation with Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) Part 1 Jesse Dominick , Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) , While visiting Moscow during the month of June, Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg), rector of the Sts. Cyril & Athanasius Institute for Orthodox Studies in San Francisco and an Archimandrite of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, visited Sretensky Monastery for an interview with Pravoslavie.ru. Father Irenei, a scholar of patristic and early Church studies, is also known as the founder of the Monachos internet forum, dedicated to the study of Orthodoxy through its patristic and monastic heritage, and as the host of the “A Word from the Holy Fathers” podcast on Ancient Faith Radio. This is the first part of our interview with Father Irenei, which focuses on the nature of the human person and several of the challenges facing modern society. Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) at Sretensky Seminary      —Father Irenei, your writings and work often center on the Church Fathers, and specifically anthropology. What factors influenced you or lead you into that focus and what message does the Orthodox conception of man have for us today in the twenty-first century? —I suppose what interested me firstly in this theme was the concreteness of the human person. I enjoy the abstraction of some theological discussion, on the metaphysics of Trinitarian relationships, etc. It’s very interesting, and useful in certain contexts. But at the end of the day we’re flesh and blood. I sit and I put down my pen and I look—and I’ve got hands with lines on them, and wrinkles. I’m a concrete being. What do we make of that? The Gospel has always impacted me as being deeply material. Christ becomes flesh, heals with mud, He pours water on people and their sight is restored. That concrete physicality of the Gospel, and of me as a person, is what drew me to want to understand: what is this person? And then we hear these wonderful passages in the Scriptures— Thou hast made man a little lower than the angels… What is man that Thou art mindful of him? (Psalm 8:4, 5)—those questions, ever since I was rather young, really moved me. I wanted to know what the answers were, and I still seek to approach the answers faithfully.
