| The Moldovan Monastery of the Great Martyr St. James the Persian In the heart of Bessarabia, 16 km far from Chiinu, opening up in the middle of a green field as an eye in the sky is the monastery of the Great Martyr St. James the Persian, a contemporary monastic foundation that desires not to bring shame to the Tradition, but to continue it creatively. Sirei village, where the monastery is located, in Streni district, is a village with old traditions that deepens the monastery " s roots into the depths of time back to St. Stephen the Great, whose soldiers came from the Vrancea Mountains and the valley of the Siret River to be closer to the border that was being threatened and overrun by heathen hordes. On September 10, 1998, three monks and servants of the Church of St. Nicholas, Protosingel Porphiry, Hieromonk Theodore, and Hierodeacon Nathaniel consecrated the place for the church, and on May 24, 1999 the groundwork was laid for the church of the Great Martyr St. Jamesthe Persian, which was consecrated one year later, on October 29, 2000. Protopriest Mihail Cazacu later joined the community, having a fervor and godliness similar to that of the neptic fathers of the eastern Church, and of the great benefactors and founders of monastic centers. He consecrated the space of the large church with the dedication of the Annunciation and St. John Jacob the Hozevite on September 15, 2004. The monastery in the night of winter On March 22, 2005 construction work for the main church began, and was finished in September 2006, wholly on the expenditure of Fr. Mihail Cazacu. | Sunday morning fire engulfs St. John " s rectory, Nanticoke, PA/Православие.Ru Sunday morning fire engulfs St. John " s rectory, Nanticoke, PA St. John the Baptist Church Nanticoke, PA, March 5, 2012 Flames engulfed the rectory of Saint John the Baptist parish here during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, March 4, 2012, leaving Priest Adam R. Sexton, his wife, and their eight children without a home. According to an article published in Monday’s Luzerne County “Citizens Voice,” the fire broke out in the rectory basement and had been spreading for about half an hour before firefighters were called in around 11:00 a.m. Nanticoke Deputy Chief Tom Sadowski was quoted as stating that the home’s “balloon frame” construction — common in the 1910s, when it was built — meant there was nothing to stop the fire once it got into the walls from working its way to the first and second floors during the half-hour it went undetected. While he is quoted as stating that the fire appears to have been accidental, he added that the damage was “fairly serious,” and that he was unsure as to whether it would be livable or not. Fortunately there were no injuries to the Sextons, who were assigned to the parish in 2008. Father Adam also serves as chaplain for the Nanticoke fire department. “Obviously to all the guys, it was personal,” Sadowski told reporters, calling the Sextons “one of the nicest families you could ever hope to meet…. Thirteen bells with total weight of 3600 kilograms were cast at the " Liteks " factory in Moscow. They were blessed by the Rector of this Church under construction, Archpriest Andrei Kortochkin in presence of parishioners and guests, and the head of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Spain E.A. Sokolov was among them. " This Church is being built not only for those who will pray in it but also as a testimony for those who are outside it and outside the Church. Today we have prayed that sound of bells should echo in their hearts as a calling to communion with God and to spiritual labors, " said Father Andrew in his sermon to those present at the blessing. The construction which is being carried out with support of the charitable foundation " Transsoyuz " , is to be completed at the end of April. The day before, deputy head doctor from the Rauchfuss Children " s Hospital turned to the ombudsman. It cleared out that the girl " s father practically banned the doctors to save his child. The girl and her mother suffered from the road accident on March 26, when a driver drove on the three passersby at the Solidarnost Prospect. Doctors tried to persuade the girl " s father, but did not have any success. It cleared out that he belonged to Jehovah Witnesses whose convictions do not allow blood transfusion even in situations dangerous for life. The man brought an advocate with him, who not only told the doctors that the father officially refused the transfusion, but explained what consequences the hospital would face if they violate the parental ban. However, chairman of the Smolny Court Viktor Shashkin took a resolution to permit blood transfusion and make an operation by life-saving indications independently from the parent " s ban. Sava Janjic, the Abbot of Visoki Decani Serbian Orthodox Monastery, the first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in Kosovo has released a video concerning Kosovo " s bid to join UNESCO and the danger this poses to the Serbian spiritual and cultural treasures in the area. The video and text can be viewed here: I am taking this opportunity to convey most serious concerns Kosovo’s UNESCO bid has created in my Church and our community. As Kosovo has been a spiritual center of Serbian Orthodox Church since XIII century with tombs and relics of our Archbishops in our most holy shrines, our primary concern has always been to protect these holy sites. It is exactly due to danger our holy sites have been facing in the last 16 years that our UNESCO World Heritage Sites, all four of which are Serbian Orthodox churches, are also inscribed the List of the World Heritage in Danger. Regular attacks, verbal provocations amid the general atmosphere of intolerance have made it necessary our most important sites in Kosovo still remain under a special security regime by police and International peacekeepers. Regrettably, AFTER the war in Kosovo, unlike other civil-wars in Former Yugoslavia, particularly in Bosnia, in which vandalism of holy sites stopped after the end of hostilities, 150 Serbian Orthodox Churches and nearly 400 Serbian Orthodox Christian cemeteries in Kosovo have been destroyed or seriously damaged since the beginning of the UN peace mission in Kosovo in June 1999. Only in two days in March 2004, 34 of our holy sites were torched by thousands of Kosovo Albanian rioters. We had no help from that time and currently the same Kosovo leaders and Kosovo provisional institutions, except international troops NATO led troops of KFOR, which protected our most important shrines. My monastery, a XIV century site alone has been attacked by grenades four times since the end of Kosovo war in 1999, and that is the reason we still remain under a tight NATO protection. |
