Ten Years Since March Pogrom Against Serbs In Kosovo Source: In Serbia It is ten years today since a pogrom was committed against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija (KiM) and its order-givers and organizers from Albanian political and paramilitary structures have still remained unnamed and unpunished. Photo: Novosti.rs      This was the second major pogrom to be carried out in peacetime by ethnic Albanian separatists since NATO’s bombing, when the province became an international protectorate administered by the United Nations (UN). In June 1999, more than 250,000 Serbs, Roma and other non-Albanians were expelled from the territory in the presence of international forces. In the wave of ethnic Albanian violence that broke out on March 17, 2004, a total of ten Serbs were killed and two went missing, and 11 Albanians died in clashes with members of international forces. In only three days, 954 people were injured, including 143 Serbs and dozens of members of international forces who clashed with the Albanians in an attempt to protect the Serbs and their property. The attack left 72 UN vehicles damaged. A total of 4,012 Serbs were expelled, six towns and nine villages were ethnically cleansed, and 935 Serb houses and 10 community facilities – schools, health centers, and post offices – were destroyed, burnt down or heavily damaged. The religious and architectural heritage of the Serb people was a special target for the ethnic Albanians, resulting in 35 churches and monasteries, including 18 cultural monuments, being destroyed or burnt down.      Devic Monastery near Srbica and the dormitories of the Monastery of the Holy Archangels near Prizren were flattened; Our Lady of Ljevis Cathedral from the 12th century and the Church of St George from the 16th century were burned down, and on the vault of the latter the ethnic Albanians wrote: Death for Serbs. The Serb Orthodox Theological School in Prizren and the seat of the Diocese of Raska and Prizren were destroyed. Serb cemeteries were desecrated, including the marble tomb of St. Joanikije of Devic in Devic Monastery and the one of Emperor Dusan in the Monastery of the Holy Archangels.

Albanian-Serb tensions finally exploded into full-scale violence in 1998, and in March 1999 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) initiated a three-month bombing campaign of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to wrest control of the province of Kosovo from Serbia. During the conflict, Serb government and paramilitary forces expelled tens of thousands of Albanians from the province and destroyed or damaged dozens of mosques. Under the terms of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, in June 1999 the conflict came to an end, and the UN, together with NATO, assumed responsibility for governing Kosovo. During the UN-NATO occupation of Kosovo, some 200,000 Serb Orthodox Christians have been driven from Kosovo by ethnic extremists. Most of the remaining Serb Orthodox population in Kosovo lives in what are essentially ethnic ghettoes. During this time, over 130 Serbian Orthodox monasteries and churches have been destroyed, along with numerous cemeteries and other church properties. In just one outburst of anti-Serb pogroms in March 2004, extremists destroyed approximately thirty Orthodox churches, including priceless monuments of Byzantine culture in the Balkans, such as the Church of the Virgin Mother in Prizren. In February 2008, Albanian authorities in Kosovo unilaterally declared independence according to the terms of a plan drawn up by former Finnish president Marti Ahtisaari. The so-called “Ahtisaari Plan” provides for significant self-government of the Serb population in Kosovo and includes various protections for the Orthodox religious and cultural sites in Kosovo, but it remains to be seen whether and how these protections will be implemented in practice. FUTURE CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS In November 2009 the highly respected and much beloved patriarch of Serbia, His Holiness Pavle, died after a long illness. In January 2010 the holy assembly of bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church elected the bishop of Niss, Irinej, as Pavle’s successor to the throne of the Orthodox Archbishopric of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade-Karlovci, and Serbian Patriarch.

His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia took part in the memorial evening. The Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church addressed the audience with the following  speech: “Before I went to this place tonight, I opened the New Testament and found myself at the beginning of the seventh chapter of the Gospel of Matthew where it says: Do not judge, or you too will be judged. I came here with the feeling that we had gathered not to judge but to remember and say what was true. We have gathered to remember together, nationwide, the Church says in unison, those unfortunate days from twenty-two years ago. Above all, let us remember and pray for innocent victims; and our victims are innocent, because our people, it is clear all over the world today, defended themselves from aggression. We remember our soldiers and policemen, giant heroes from Kosare, Pastrik and other battlegrounds; of our celestial knights – pilots, then innocent civilians – victims of cluster bombs in Nis and throughout Kosovo, Metohija, Montenegro, the killed in a passenger train in Grdelica gorge, killed on the streets and squares of our cities, factories, hospitals, in the TV station, perished children … We remember everyone, we pray for everything, and I am sure that we should pray for them, because God wrote them in the book of eternity, the book of eternal life, and the names of many victims during those 78 days can be and they should be inscribed in the calendar of the Orthodox Church.

In Ingushetia, newly established monastery gives spiritual guidance to military units stationed in the republic Ordzhonikidzevskaya, April 8, 2014 Archpriest Peter Sukhonosov The newly founded Monastery " of New Sinai " was established at the parish Church of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God of the Ordzhornikidzevskaya stanitsa (a stanitsa is a Cossack village. Its former name is Sleptsovskaya) in the Ingush Republic in March 2014. The Ordzhonikidzevskaya stanitsa became famous owing to Archpriest Peter Sukhonosov, who served here for many years. He was kidnapped by bandits on March 28, 1999, and was martyred by them. The church where Fr. Peter had served fell into decay and was torn down, and a new church has been built on its site. There are not many monks in the monastery so far, but the monastic life has already been arranged here today, and the spiritual-educational work is carried on. The newly established monastery gives spiritual guidance not only to a small number of Orthodox residents of neighbouring stanitsas and towns of Ingushetia, but also to military men from the units, stationed in the republic, as well as Ministry of Foreign Affairs subdivisions and frontier posts. Novice Nikolai Kizimov, who is in charge of coordination with media and military structures, has reported to a correspondent of Military and Naval Clergy " s Bulletin , that the monastery " s brethren are frequent guests at the outposts, situated in the mountainous Jeirakh district and at the frontier directorate of Federal Security Service in the Ingush Republic, on whose territory a chapel is erected. There is a cooperation agreement with headquarters of the units of Defense Ministry and Interior Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, stationed in the republic. A treaty was concluded with the republic " s Ministry of Internal Affairs concerning a spiritual guidance to the detached law-enforcement officers on the territory of Ingushetia, sent from central regions of Russia. Thanks to the support of Yunus-bek Yevkurov, head of the republic, the monastery " s abbot delivers a pastoral speech once a week on local television to Ingush residents. This is met with a keen interest and response not only among Orthodox, but even among Muslims. The abbot plans to hold regular meetings with the republic " s school and university students within the framework of study of the fundamentals of religions. 10 апреля 2014 г. 13th anniversary of NATO bombing campaign against Serbia Belgrade, March 26, 2012 Marth 24 marks the 13th anniversary since the start of the NATO bombing campaign against Serbia, i.e. the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), which lasted 78 days and resulted in at least 2,500 deaths and more than 12,500 injuries. The death toll among the military and police forces reached 1,031, while around 6,000 civilians were injured, including 2,700 children. The number of injuries among soldiers and police officers was 5,173, with ten or so people still missing. The total damage was estimated at USD 100 billion at the time. NATO has never disclosed its losses. The decision to attack the FRY was the first in history to be made without the approval of the UN Security Council, and the order was given to U.S. General Wesley Clark, the allied commander at the time, by NATO Secretary General Javier Solana. Later on, in his book Waging Modern War, Clark revealed that the plans for the air strikes against the FRY were well under way in mid-June 1998 and completed in late August that year. FRY was attacked under the pretext of failure of the talks on the future status of the province of Kosovo and Metohija, held in Rambouillet and Paris. After the decision on non-acceptance of foreign troops was ratified by the Serbian parliament, which proposed the UN forces to monitor a peaceful resolution of conflicts in Kosovo, NATO launched air raids on March 24, 1999 at 7.45 p.m. CET. The 19-member Alliance launched projectiles from ships in the Adriatic Sea, and four military bases in Italy, all with the support of strategic operators who took off from the basis in Western Europe and latter in the U.S. The first targets were barracks and air defence forces in Batajnica, Mladenovac, Pristina and other locations. There is practically no city in Yugoslavia which was not targeted on a number of occasions during the 11-week campaign. The bombing caused damage to 25.000 housing facilities and destroyed 470 kilometres of road and 595 kilometres of railway tracks. A total of 14 airports were damaged, as well as 19 hospitals, 20 healthcare centres, 18 kindergartens, 69 schools, 176 cultural monuments and 44 bridges, while 33 more were completely destroyed.

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill consecrated a new Church of St. Alexander Nevsky at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) on Sunday. The ceremony featured state officials. “The opening of a church at the country’s leading diplomatic institution of high learning will be a milestone event as important as the opening of the Church of St. Tatiana under the Moscow State University in the mid-1990s. In this sense, it is vitally important that the MGIMO leadership had given real support and assistance for the church’s construction while the institute’s students are becoming its parishioners,” Priest Alexander Volkov, Patriarch Kirill’s press secretary, said earlier. He added that the church already had quite a numerous community, including MGIMO students and teachers, who used to attend church services in a temporary set up church for the past few years. “The consecration of the MGIMO church is an event that has long been awaited by community members, including the students,” Volkov said. The idea of building the church devoted to Alexander Nevsky, the patron and guardian of Russian military and diplomats, belongs to MGIMO’s teachers and students. It first appeared in 1999. Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexiy II blessed the construction in 2005. The church’s construction kicked off in 2013 as part of a program for erecting Orthodox churches in Moscow. The rector of St. Nicholas Church, Archpriest Mikhail Satsiuk , was killed on October 12, 1998, in Brest.  The same day his corpse was found in an automobile on an exit road from the city. The investigation concluded that the motive for the murder was financial; the murderer pursued the purpose of robbery.   The Old Rite priest, Hieromonk Dimitry (Rasstegayev) was atrociously murdered in January 1998, in the Yaroslavl region. The motive of his death was his flat in Yaroslavl, which the young priest was going to sell, leaving for a new parish in Belaya Krinitsa.  A gang of burglars, which settled in the Yaroslavl region under the guise of the real estate firm " Partner " , killed the clergyman, dismembered his body, and threw it into the basement of the house, where a drunken party began. The criminals were caught only after three years. Hieromonk Dimitry (Rasstegayev) Archpriest Boris Ponomarev , rector of the Church of the Prophet Elijah, was killed on July 16, 1999, in the Ilyinsk settlement, Mozhaisk district of Moscow region.  The police solved the murder rather quickly. It turned out that the priest was murdered by three repeat criminals. They were parishioners of his church and the archpriest sometimes invited them to come to see him. The criminals noticed several ancient icons at his home and decided to rob the priest. In the night they broke into Ponomarev " s home, tied up his wife and a female relative, and killed the priest himself.   Archpriest Boris Ponomarev   Archpriest Peter Sukhonosov , rector of the Holy Protection Church in the Cossack station Sleptsovskaya (Ingushetia), was kidnapped on March 28, 1999, by four bandits, who attacked the church in which he had served for more than forty years. He died in captivity.  Archpriest Peter Sukhonosov On August 23, 2000, Hieromonk Simeon (Anosov), rector of the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called in Barnaul (Altai territory) was killed.  The murderer was the former hieromonk " s driver, Konstantin Shlenkov, who had been previously convicted several times.
