Orthodox Christian Church Branches Out in Cranberry      When Frank Harrison moved to Cranberry and started looking for an Orthodox Christian church, he found he had to travel about 10 or 15 miles for the nearest one. He eventually became a member of St. Anthony Orthodox Church in Butler, but as time passed he noticed more people of the Orthodox Christian faith moving into his community. Now members of Mr. Harrison’s church and his pastor, the Rev. Bogdan G. Bucur, have started a weekly outreach in the Cranberry Township Municipal Building to allow other Orthodox Christians a place to meet in their community. The group is open to anyone interested in the Orthodox religion and meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday nights in the Brush Creek Room of the township building. “There were no churches between Butler and downtown Pittsburgh, except for Allison Park. We thought there was a need,” Mr. Harrison said. Father Bucur, whose church is part of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese, said they are conducting a pan-orthodox service in Cranberry. He said that Orthodox churches traditionally have been built along ethnic lines with each following the same religious principles, but services and traditions vary slightly from group to group. The pan-orthodox service is meant to encompass all Orthodox Christians. In that spirit, Father Bucur said they have welcomed members of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church from Pittsburgh’s North Side, which is part of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese, to the Thursday services. St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church is looking to relocate in Cranberry, he said. “The idea is to meet consistently and persistently, so people will hear about it and come,” Mr. Harrison said. Each Thursday they spend about half an hour in a service and another half hour in discussion, he said. He said they hope to continue these meetings through the end of the year and then assess the interest. “I’m very excited about this. We are starting something which is a little bit like the parable with the mustard seed,” said Father Bucur. “We are hoping it will flourish, but if not at least we will have tried.” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 23 октября 2015 г. Without wishing to diminish St Patrick’s importance in any way, it is relevant to point out that in 431 St Palladius was sent to Ireland by St Celestine I Pope of Rome, as the first bishop of the Emerald Isle, with the task of administering the sacraments ‘to the Irish who professed Christ’. There must therefore have been numbers of Christians in Ireland by the time St Patrick arrived in the following year. Комментарии © 1999-2016 Православие.Ru

Metropolitan Onufry recalls St. Tikhon’s ministry during banquet address Mission must be both internal and external, said His Beatitude, Metropolitan Onufry of Kyiv and All Ukraine during the formal banquet during the 18th All-American Council on Thursday evening, July 23, 2015. The Holy Spirit, he said, guides us in understanding that mission is “who we are and what we do” and challenges us to be good “examples of holiness.” Metropolitan Onufry reflected on the ministry of Saint Tikhon, who had served as bishop and later archbishop in North America from 1897 through 1907. He observed how, upon Saint Tikhon’s return to his homeland, it was clear that he had been influenced by his tenure in North America, especially with regard to his commitment to mission and outreach as well as collegiality within the life of the Church. This, in turn, influenced his ministry during his last years—years of certain turmoil and persecution. Metropolitan Onufry attended the AAC at the invitation of His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon and the Holy Synod of Bishops. He was accompanied by His Grace, Bishop Evsevy of Khotinsk. Also present was His Grace, Bishop John, Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA. Metropolitan Onufry also addressed AAC delegates during the Plenary Session held earlier in the day. He observed that in the Council he sees the result of the mission to North America “because, in the eyes of all who are present at this Council, I see Christ. This is evidence of the good fruit brought fourth as a result of the mission of Saint Herman of Alaska as the Church faces current issues of missionary service in the world and, in particular, in North America and Ukraine.” In his greetings to the assembly, Metropolitan Tikhon expressed his gratitude to all who participated in the AAC and contributed to the “wonderful events” that had taken place during the week. He emphasized, that “we are each called to be apostles, to love God above all and our neighbor as our selves.” Greetings were read from His Eminence, Archbishop Leo of Karelia and All Finland, who had been invited to the AAC but was unable to attend. Archbishop Leo extended an invitation to Metropolitan Tikhon to visit the Church of Finland at a future date. 27 июля 2015 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Chinese Orthodox community in Beijing celebrate Assumption Day August 31, 2015         On August 28, 2015, the rector of the church of the Assumption at the Russian embassy in China, the Rev. Sergiy Voronin celebrated the Divine Liturgy at one of the Catholic churches in Beijing for the Orthodox citizens in China. The request for the festive service on the Assumption Day came from Orthodox Chinese, descendants of the Russian Cossacks who brought seeds of the Orthodox faith to China 330 years ago. At present, there are several hundreds of their descendants who live in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities in China and who have preserved the faith of Christ through centuries. As the exact date when Cossack prisoners and Father Maxim Leontyev came to Beijing from the Albazin jail is unknown, the celebrations are dated to the patronal feast celebrated by the first Orthodox church in Beijing, which was consecrated by Father Maxim in 1696 and dedicated to Sophia, the Wisdom of God, and consecrated again by Archimandrite Antony (Platkovsky), head of the 2nd Orthodox Mission in China in 1732. Due to the fact that the church of the Assumption, the cathedral church of the first primate of the Chinese Autonomous Orthodox Church, Bishop Basil (Yao Fang), a descendant of the Yakovlev Cossacks, was closed during the ‘cultural revolution’, the Catholics in Beijing kindly offered one of their churches in Beijing to the Orthodox for the celebration.      The Divine Liturgy was attended by over 80 people and most of them made confession and partook of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. Among the worshippers were Chinese Albazins, young Chinese citizens who chose Orthodoxy as their faith, the Russian embassy staff and Orthodox compatriots. The Orthodox community of the church of the Assumption presented the Chinese faithful with icons of 222 Chinese martyrs who suffered for the faith of Christ and other icons for their homes. 31 августа 2015 г. Holy Martyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe (†1227) Memory 17 (30) June Holy Matyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe Holy Matyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe Saint Shalva of Akhaltsikhe was a brilliant military commander in the army of Queen Tamar and the prince of Akhaltsikhe. After his victory at Shamkori in the Ganja region, Shalva carried with him the flag of the caliph, as a sign of the invincibility of the Christian Faith, and conferred it, along with the wealth he had won, as an offering to the Khakhuli Icon of the Theotokos. For his selfless service, Queen Tamar honored him with the rank of commander-in-chief of the Georgian army. During the reign of Queen Tamar’s daughter Rusudan (1222–1245), the armies of Sultan Jalal al-Din stormed into Georgia. Rusudan rallied the Georgian forces and appointed a new commander- in-chief by the name of Ioane Atabeg. Six thousand Georgians confronted a Muslim army of two hundred thousand near the village of Garnisi. Command of the advance guard was entrusted to the brave and valorous brothers Shalva and Ioane of Akhaltsikhe, while Ioane Atabeg remained with the main body of the army for the decisive battle. The advance guard fought fearlessly, though the enemy’s army greatly surpassed it in number. The brothers fought with great devotion, hoping for support from the commander-in-chief, but Ioane Atabeg was seized with envy — rather than fear — and never offered them his help. “O envy, source of every evil!” wrote one chronicler of the incident. The enemy devastated the Georgian army, killing four thousand of its most valiant soldiers. Among them was Ioane of Akhaltsikhe, whose brother Shalva was captured and delivered as a slave to Jalal al-Din. Jalal al-Din was overjoyed to have the famed soldier and military leader brought before him. He received him with proper honor, offered him cities of great wealth, and promised him more if he agreed to convert to Islam. Jalal al-Din sought with great persistence to convert Shalva to Islam, but his efforts were in vain — Shalva would not be converted, and nothing in the world would change his mind. So the sultan ordered that he be tortured to death. After hours of torment failed to kill him, Jalal al-Din’s servants cast the half-dead martyr in prison, where he later reposed. Through the intercession and protection of Thy Holy Martyr Shalva, O Merciful God, cleanse us from the multitude of our sins! During his years as inspector and professor of St. Petersburg Theological Academy, he made his first encounters with ecclesiastical censorship, with which he was connected for a long period thereafter: first as member of the St. Petersburg Ecclesiastical Censorship Committee, which was based in the Academy, and then as the author of a number of works in theology and church history. His status as an authoritative bishop notwithstanding, the ecclesiastical censors were stern in their evaluation of the works of Metropolitan Macarius. He was forced to rework certain of his publications and to await permission to print the publication over several years. In 1870, at the initiative of the Ober-Procurator of the Holy Synod, a Commission for the reconsideration of the Statute of Ecclesiastical Censors was established, and Metropolitan Macarius was appointed as the president of this commission. The recommendations of this commission, brought before the Holy Synod for consideration, allow us to evaluate Metropolitan Macarius as a person of broad ranging views who, in some respects, was ahead of his time. In a report on Wednesday, Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights blamed the church attacks on “the intensification of extremist religious interpretations that propose rearranging Egyptian society to exclude Christians”. Christians fear that Islamic groups like the Muslim Brotherhood want to convert Egypt into an Islamic state where Christians have no place. Coptic human rights activist Wagih Yacoub said in a report by International Christian Concern: “There is no doubt that the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafis are allied. The Brotherhood plays politics and the Salafis are causing chaos so they can empty Egypt of Christians and make it an Islamic state. “Lots of Egyptian people, including moderate Muslims, are worried. If Egypt becomes an Islamic state, it may mean civil war. “We won’t get protection from the military council or the police forces. Our homes will be attacked at any minute, any time. “Lots of people are scared. How will we protect ourselves? There will be bloodshed.” ICC Regional Manager for the Middle East, Aidan Clay, said the uncertainty Christians had felt at the time of the revolution was turning into fear. He said Islamic militants were taking advantage of newfound freedoms by “imposing a radical agenda and attacking anything they view contrary to Islamic doctrine”. “They are becoming bolder because the law is not being applied and criminals are not being brought to justice,” he said. “While Egypt is experiencing a period of unprecedented transition, success hinges on the full respect for the rule of law. “However, the government is not stepping in and mob rule is controlling the streets. We urge the transitional government to reform Egypt’s repressive laws and policies related to religious freedom before the September elections and to enhance security for religious minorities. “If immediate action is not taken, a grave future lies ahead for Egypt’s Christians.” Christian Today 16 мая 2011 г. ...
