Archive Holy Synod considers problems arising in preparations for Pan-Orthodox Council 3 June 2016 year 20:20 During the session of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on June 3, 2016, it was noted that in the run-up to the Pan-Orthodox Council, serious problems arose demanding urgent joint Orthodox actions. “The decision that the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church made on June 1, 2016, as well the continued uncertainty as to the possibility for the Patriarchate of Antioch to attend the Holy and Great Council, just as the absence of preliminary consensus on the draft Working Procedure of the Council and the document “The Sacrament of Marriage and Impediments to It” mean that at the present moment when only two weeks remain before the planned date of the opening of the Council, there are serious problems demanding urgent joint Orthodox actions”, the Holy Synod’s resolution states. The Holy Synod adopted the Russian Orthodox Church’s amendments to the draft documents on “The Relations of the Orthodox Church with the Rest Christian World” and ‘The Mission of the Orthodox Church in Today’s World”. The amendments were formulated on the basis of judgements voiced by hierarchs, clergy, monastics and laity. It is stated in the Synod’s resolutions that as a result of the discussion held by the Orthodox Churches of Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece as well as the Holy Kinot of Holy Mount Athos on the draft documents of the Pan-Orthodox Council, essential amendments were presented, consonant to a great extent with the proposals made by the Russian Orthodox Church, demanding a substantial consideration with the aim to find general Orthodox consensus. The Holy Synod noted that nonparticipation of even a single Church in the Council constitutes an unsurmountable obstacle for the holding of the Holy and Great Council, considering that its decisions can be made only by consensus, as it follows from the provisions of the documents approved by the Synaxis of the Primates of the Local Churches. In accordance with the resolution of the Holy Synod, a way out of the emergency situation could be found in the holding of an extraordinary pre-Council conference to consider the situation and to examine the amendments to the Council’s documents so that agreed proposals may be developed. As a result of this conference, the Holy Synod’s resolution states, a judgement could be made as to the possibility of holding the Pan-Orthodox Council at the planned date. The position of the Russian Orthodox Church Holy Synod will be brought to the notice of the Primates of all the Local Orthodox Churches. Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year

Title to Historic Church Lands Returned to Alaska SYOSSET, NY [OCA] In an historic vote at its regular fall session here September 20-23, 2010, the Metropolitan Council of the Orthodox Church in America voted unanimously to return title to the ownership of Orthodox Christians in Alaska all real estate the national Church has held in trust since 1867. The decision was immediately blessed by the Lesser Synod of Bishops. According to the Treaty of Cession, which placed Alaska under American rule, ownership of the land and buildings was to be retained by the Orthodox Christians who worshiped therein. Legal title, however, was deeded to the resident Orthodox Bishop, to be held in trust for them. In 1870, when the Church " s headquarters were moved to San Francisco, the deeds went south as well. In 1904, the Archbishop " s see once again was moved to New York City, where the title has remained -- until today. In a 1923 letter written in response to an appeal by Father Andrew P. Kashevarov, the founder of the Alaska Territorial (now State) Historical Library and Museum, Judge James Wickersham of Juneau suggested that it would be prudent for the local bishop to hold the titles, rather than the head of the Church in New York. At the Metropolitan Council " s spring 2010 session, Archpriest Michael Oleksa, a member of the Metropolitan Council from the Diocese of Alaska, brought forth Wickersham " s suggestion and proposed that title to all Alaska Church lands be returned. Citing that it was the legal and fiduciary responsibility of the Council to know exactly what lands and funds were involved in such a move, Judge Ray Lanier, a Council member from the Diocese of the South, insisted that a complete listing of the holdings and their potential value be presented before any final decision be made, thereby tabling Father Michaels motion. Professor Lanier then spent an exhausting week in Anchorage, studying the records compiled by Ms. Grayce Oakley, the Diocese of Alaska " s lands secretary, who had spent over four years compiling, cataloging and becoming thoroughly familiar with all the deeds and their histories. Ms. Oakley " s work enabled the Church to act with proper diligence and care. Today -- 87 years later -- the Orthodox Church in America heeded Judge Wickersham " s wise counsel. In its decision, the Metropolitan Council specifically thanked Ms. Oakley, a Presbyterian, for her dedication and commitment in helping to preserve this heritage for Orthodox Alaska and future generations. In the year 628, Patriarch Zacharias of Jerusalem (609-633) returned from his captivity in Persia. After his death, the patriarchal throne was occupied for two years by Saint Modestus (December 18). After the death of Saint Modestus, Saint Sophronius was chosen Patriarch. Saint Sophronius toiled much for the welfare of the Jerusalem Church as its primate (634-644). Toward the end of his life, Saint Sophronius and his flock lived through a two year siege of Jerusalem by the Moslems. Worn down by hunger, the Christians finally agreed to open the city gates, on the condition that the enemy spare the holy places. But this condition was not fulfilled, and Saint Sophronius died in grief over the desecration of the Christian holy places. Written works by Patriarch Sophronius have come down to us in the area of dogmatics, and likewise his “Excursus on the Liturgy,” the Life of Saint Mary of Egypt (April 1), and also about 950 troparia and stikheras from Pascha to the Ascension. While still a hieromonk, Saint Sophronius reviewed and made corrections to the Rule of the monastery of Saint Sava the Sanctified (December 5). The saint’s three Odes Canons for the Holy Forty Day Great Fast are included in the the contemporary Lenten Triodion. Troparion — Tone 5 Patriarch Sophronius, you were glorious in the splendor of sobriety,/and through the radiance of your words you revealed ineffable enlightenment from heaven./For by your life you attained wisdom/and now you confirm the Church/as an illustrious hierarch and intercessor for us with the Lord. Kontakion — Tone 8 You were most wise among patriarchs, Sophronius of Jerusalem./You struggled with divine zeal, spreading the commandments of truth with your lips./You set right the foundations of the Church and firmly established the monastic order./You brought to light wise sermons, and instructed by them,/therefore we cry out to you: “Rejoice, splendid boast of the Orthodox.” Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю:

Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk: Law discriminating canonical Church has not been reversed in Ukraine 18 April 2021 year 14:07 Over one million people have signed an Appeal to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky concerning persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Earlier in April boxes containing the signed document were brought to the Presidential Office. There is a request in the appeal to reverse the discriminating laws against the canonical Church. Speaking on ‘The Church and the World” TV programme, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, underlined the importance of this action: “A million of signatures is a great many. It is as good as the population of a big city. We are talking now about the document not digitally signed, but containing paper-based signatures collected by the faithful.” The archpastor said that during President Poroshenko’s tenure a discriminative bill was adopted which obliged religious organizations with the centre outside of Ukraine to put the name of this centre in its title. Using the adopted bill, the authorities were going to forcefully rename the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the largest confession of Ukraine, into ‘the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine.’ “But the Ukrainian Orthodox Church opposes the change of its name for several reasons, Metropolitan Hilarion underscored. Firstly, the centre of this Church is not located in Moscow, but in Kiev. This is a self-governing Church, which determines its domestic and foreign policy at its own discretion and elects its hierarchs and its head without consent of Moscow, being not in the least dependent on the Russian Church, neither in financial, nor in administrative, or in any other aspect. It is the national Church of Ukraine, and it would have been unfair to rename it into the ‘Russian Church.’ The Ukrainian Church consists not of the citizens of Russia, but its members are Ukrainians by birth and on passport. They are patriots of their country.” The goal of this bill is to discriminate the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and in the context of political infighting between Ukraine and Russia to declare it an outlaw, the DECR chairman added. He stated that the application of this legislative rule was suspended under Vladimir Zelensky, but the law has not been reversed. “That is why the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have collected signatures all over the country and sent an appeal to the President asking him to repeal this discriminative law,” Metropolitan Hilarion said in conclusion. Three suspects charged on eve of fortieth day since St. Petersburg metro attack Moscow, May 12, 2017 Photo: RIA-Novosti      Official charges have been brought up against three suspects in last month’s terrorist attack in the St. Petersburg metro, Russia’s Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko told TASS on Thursday. The news comes on the eve of the fortieth day since the attack, which is being prayerfully remembered in St. Petersburg today. “As of now, there are ten suspects in the criminal case. Three of them, Bakhram Ergashev, Ibragimzhon Ermatov and Makhamadyusuf Mirzaalimov, have been charged with committing crimes under clause b, part 3 of article 205 and part 2 of article 222.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (‘A Terror Attack’ and ‘Illegal Acquisition, Transfer, Sale, Storage, Transportation or Carriage of Explosives or Explosive Devices’),” she said. The other accomplices in the terror attacks are to be charged shortly, the spokeswoman said. The St. Petersburg metro system was rocked on April 3 by a bomb which went off as the train traveled from the Technological Institute Station to the Sennaya Square Station. The blast claimed fifteen people, including the suicide bomber, who was later established to have been Akbarzhon Dzhalilov , a Kyrgyzstani Muslim associated with ISIS. 102 people were also injured in the attack. The day after the attack it was announced that all churches and monasteries in St. Petersburg would pray for the victims for forty days, adding the petition, “Again we pray for the repose of all the souls of the departed servants of God, and of the innocent victims of the terrorist act, for the remission of all their every transgression, whether voluntary or involuntary” to the liturgical litanies. A spontaneous memorial popped up on the street today near the Technological Institute metro station, in honor of those killed, in addition to a panikhida served in the Trinity-Izmailovsky Cathedral, the closest church to the metro station. Relatives of those killed and injured were especially invited to the memorial service. A panikhida was also served this morning in St. Isaac’s Cathedral , and in other churches throughout the St. Petersburg Diocese.
