Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 28, 2020, in all cathedrals, churches, monasteries, cemeteries and at all heroes’ monuments across Romania and abroad to mark the feast of the Ascension of the Lord and National Heroes’ Day. The services will be officiated after the Divine Liturgy in compliance with current regulations in the national state of alert. Orthodox churches will ring their bells at noon as a token of gratitude for the heroes who sacrificed themselves for the nation, faith and country. The commemoration of the heroes of the Romanian nation on the feast of the Ascension of the Lord was decided by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1920. This decision was later enshrined in two other synodal resolutions in 1999 and 2001 by which this day was proclaimed a national church holiday. By law 379/2003 on the regime of graves and war memorials, the fortieth day after Easter, the feast of the Ascension of the Saviour Jesus Christ, was proclaimed Heroes’ Day, and a national holiday of the Romanian people. Romanian heroes, soldiers and fighters of all times and places are remembered during every Divine Liturgy celebrated in the Orthodox churches in Romania, who sacrificed themselves on the battlefields, in concentration camps and prisons for the defence of the homeland and the Christian faith, for the unification of the nation, the freedom and dignity of the Romanian people. The National Cathedral in Bucharest is also erected in memory of the heroes, the first of its two patronal feasts being the Ascension of the Lord. Icon of the Mother of God “Enthroned” Commemorated on March 2/15 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru The “Enthroned” (or “Reigning”) Icon of the Mother of God appeared on March 2, 1917, the day of Tsar Nicholas’s abdication, in the village of Kolomskoye near Moscow. In February 1917, an elderly woman named Eudokia saw the Mother of God in a dream telling her to go to Kolomskoye to find a large blackened icon in a church. After the vision was repeated three times, she went to Kolomskoye to search for the icon with the priest Nicholas. In the basement of the church they found the icon and started wiping off the accumulated dust. Then they were able to see the Most Holy Theotokos wearing a crown and sitting on a throne. Immediately, Father Nicholas celebrated a service of Thanksgiving and an Akathist. News of the icon’s discovery spread throughout Russia, and there were several miracles of healing from physical and mental infirmities. As time went by, the icon renewed itself and became brighter and brighter. Particularly striking was the blood-red robe of the Virgin. Since the icon was revealed just as the Tsar abdicated, many people believed that the Queen of Heaven had assumed royal authority over the Russian land, and so the icon became known as the “Enthroned” (or Reigning) icon. It was discovered that the icon had come from the Ascension convent in Moscow. In 1812, before Napoleon’s invasion, this icon and others were sent to Kolomskoye’s Ascension church for safekeeping. Apparently forgotten, the icons were never returned to Moscow. A Service and Akathist to the “Enthroned” Icon were composed with the assistance of His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon (+ 1925). Many copies of the icon were venerated throughout Russia, but these were confiscated by the Soviets. The Service and Akathist to the icon were also forbidden to be served. The original icon is said to be in the Novodevichy Museum in Moscow, and there is a copy in the Church of the Kazan Mother of God in Kolomskoye. The “Enthroned” or “Reigning” Icon, which belongs to the Panachranta type, shows the Theotokos seated on a throne with Her Son. Great discoveries await archaeologists at investigation of remains in the Kremlin monasteries Moscow, August 4, 2014 Ascension Monastery      According to Sergei Devyatov, head of the department of 20th century National History at the Moscow Lomonosov State University, part of the site of the demolished Chudov (in honor of the miracle of Archangel Michael) and Ascension Monasteries of the Moscow Kremlin have survived, reports Interfax-Religion . “Parts of the Chudov Monastery were simply paved over. Underground rooms have survived. And if the monastery is restored in its original proportion, this site will need to be excavated. I feel that certain, great discoveries await the archaeologists,” said S. Devyatov. According to his information, some of the monastery’s premises were below ground level. They have survived and are subject to laws governing museums. “Apart from the fragments of the Chudov Monastery, there are also ground floors of two churches, basements of the metropolitan’s apartment as well as the brothers’ quarters under the block pavement of Ivanovskaya Square (the largest square within the Kremlin. Its name comes from the John the Great bell tower). The vault of the Small Nikolaevsky Palace is also situated there, on the Ivanovskaya Square (today it is considerably larger than it was in the early 20th century). The previous excavations on this site in 1995 resulted in the discovery of the remains of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich,” reminded the historian. Last week, the Russian president Vladimir Putin proposed thinking over the idea of restoring the two above-mentioned monasteries, which had been destroyed in 1929-1930. One Kremlin administrative building now stands on their site. V. Putin stressed that such a plan could be implemented only after its approval by the public and by UNESCO. S. Devyatov noted that the question of demolition of administrative building 14 and restoration of two monasteries on its site had been raised as early as in 2002. Architects of the “Mosproekt 2” (“Moscow project 2”) state unitary enterprise were charged with the task of exploring this question. “But the work did not proceed. By all appearances, the idea was forgotten. However, several years ago, on the wall of Kremlin building 14 a commemorative plaque appeared with indication that the Chudov Monastery was located on this site until 1929,” he added. Russian specialists preserving Christian heritage of Lebanon The Kadisha Valley (also Wadi Qadisha), Lebanon, December 12, 2014 A group of archaeologists and restorers, including Russian scientists, has begun implementing a large-scale project of reconstructing an ancient Christian church complex that is a UNESCO World Heritage monument, reports the Tayyar.org news portal.      According to the media reports, the Maronite Church appealed to the Committee for Restoration of Ancient Lebanese Churches for further examination of the unique wall paintings of the Kadisha Valley churches. The first stage of the reconstruction was carried out through joint efforts of specialists from Russia, Poland, and Italy. Now the time has come for 16th-17th century frescoes. According to George Arab, the project’s executive director, the frescoes depicting Christ and the Holy Family as well as Icons of the Mother of God and St. Daniel Are of a special interest for the scientific world. Today the committee members have started surveying the state of the monuments and embarked on their description. Unfortunately, the frescoes were considerably damaged over the years by the high humidity of the valley. The icons themselves, according to rector of one of the Kadisha Valley churches, Father Habib, amaze pilgrims even now. The main wall painting that depicts the Ascension of the Holy Virgin is a rare iconographic type. Here the Mother of God, being received by the Holy Trinity into the heavens, rises above the cedars of Lebanon, under which the locally venerated Holy Patriarchs surround the sacrificial altar with the Lamb. It is supposed that the original icon was painted by Monk Peter of Cyprus in 1702 under Patriarch Estephan El Douaihy (1630-1704). Other wall paintings the Russian archaeologists are currently working on are no less striking; for example, the so-called “fresco of Petition” bears an image of the Heavenly Father standing in front of the Heavenly Altar with the Lamb. In the historians’ view, this and other compositions enable the scientists to throw light upon the late stages of development of the oriental iconography which are insufficiently known to this day. At the same time, according to the As-Safir newspaper’s reports, the next step of the field research will be the lower story of a Kadisha monastery built in the 12th century. Patriarch Irinej places first stone in dome mosaic in massive cathedral of St. Sava in Belgrade Moscow, May 23, 2017 Photo from the site of the Serbian Orthodox Church      May 22, 2017 is a day that will be recorded in the annals of the Serbian people’s beloved temple of St. Sava on Belgrade’s Vraar plateau. On this day, the first stones of the mosaic in the church’s dome were placed, reports the site of the Serbian Orthodox Church. During a special prayer service, in the presence of the hierarchs of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irinej himself placed the first stone into the mosaic of the Ascension that will adorn the inside of the cupola of the massive St. Sava’s Cathedral. Then stones were also placed by Serbian President Tomislav Nikoli, Crown Prince Alexander II Karaorevi, and Minister of Culture and Information Vladan Vukosavljevi. Photo from the site of the Serbian Orthodox Church      During the ceremony, the Holy Synod awarded Alexander Djukov and G. Kirill Kravchenko, top officials of the Russian Gazprom Neft oil company, with the high decoration of the Order of St. Sava, second degree, for their great contribution to the construction of the St. Sava church. Earlier a donation agreement had been signed by the Society for the Construction of the Church of St. Sava, Gazprom Neft, and a Moscow-based international fund for assistance to UNESCO. Russian specialists have created unique and unprecedented large-scale icons for the looming Cathedral of St. Sava on Belgrade’s Vraar plateau. A solemn presentation of the mosaic decorations for the dome in St. Sava’s took place on December 3, 2016, with the participation of Serbian president Tomislav Nikolic. St. Sava’s Cathedral was conceived of as the patriarchal church for the Serbian Orthodox Church, and is the largest Orthodox Church in Europe. Its construction began in the 1930s on the place where the relics of St. Sava (1175-1236), the founder and first primate of the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church, were burned by Turkish order. After the 1941 bombing of Belgrade construction on the temple ceased altogether, resuming only in 1985. The inside surface area for mosaics is 183,000 square feet.

Moscow Kremlin launches tours to sites of lost monasteries Moscow, December 12, 2016      A new guided tour has appeared at the Moscow Kremlin for tourists from different countries. According to its organizers, it will be interesting for both students and adults. The new tour’s itinerary passes through the New Kremlin Public Garden where in the fourteenth century centers of religious life were established in Muscovite Rus’: the Chudov Monastery and the Ascension Convent. Then the residence of the Russian emperors appeared on that spot—the Small Nikolaevsky Palace, the press service of the Moscow Kremlin Museums reported. The architectural ensembles were destroyed in the Soviet era. However, the monasteries were immortalized in engravings, and the ancient designs. Their images are also present in paintings of that time. Archaeological excavations have helped to recreate the look of the ruined buildings. In particular, visitors will be able to see segments of the ruined buildings’ foundations. The guides’ narrative will be supplemented with video materials which recreate the architectural appearance of the Moscow Kremlin of past centuries. In October 2016 Press Secretary of the Russian Federation’s President Dmitry Peskov said that reconstruction of these monasteries on the site of the dismantled administrative building is still not on the agenda.
