Sifton, Manitoba " s historic church destroyed by fire/Православие.Ru Sifton, Manitoba " s historic church destroyed by fire Sifton, MB, Canada, Sept. 11, 2010 - [OCA] On Wednesday night, September 8, 2010, the hamlet of Sifton lost one of its landmarks as Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church burned completely to the ground. The church, built some 100 years ago in the " Lemko " style common to what is today southeastern Poland, had been restored completely several years ago and had been declared a heritage site. According to local residents, flames were first spotted at about 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night. Firefighters were unable to extinguish the rapidly spreading fire. By 1:00 a.m. Thursday, only the smouldering basement remained. It is unknown what or who started the fire, although the recent increase in vandalism and thefts in the area has led some locals to suspect arson. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have initiated an investigation. There was no insurance on the building due to a lack of funds. A number of historic artifacts, including books, were destroyed. " The Sifton church had been restored and renovated recently, with some financial assistance from the Archdiocese and elsewhere, " said His Eminence, Archbishop Seraphim of Ottawa and Canada. " It had become a stopping-point in northern Manitoba, and it had established a registered Quiet Garden. The loss has many aspects beyond historical, emotional and sentimental ones. I hope we learn a lesson. " At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, Sifton was an important center of religious activity for the Orthodox mission in Canada. Located near the church was Holy Ascension Monastery, Orphanage, and Pastoral School, established in part due through the efforts of Archbishop Arseny [Chahovtsov]. The monastery and parish served many pioneering immigrants from Ukraine and elsewhere for several decades. The monastery existed into the 1960s, when the depopulation of rural areas began to significantly affect the Sifton region.

Metropolitan Niphon of Philippople: The word of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill draws a wide response in the world Source: DECR Natalya Mihailova 05 February 2015 On February 1, 2015, the 6th anniversary of the enthronement of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, after the festive divine service at the Church of Christ the Saviour, there was a fraternal repast during which congratulations were extended to His Holiness by Orthodox hierarchs, Russian Federation ministers and Federal Assembly deputies. Extending congratulations to His Holiness on behalf of Local Orthodox Churches’ representatives to the Moscow Patriarchal throne, Metropolitan Niphon of Philippople, Patriarchate of Antioch, recalled the words Patriarch Kirill said on the day of his enthronement: ‘A patriarch should see to it that every personality in all its uniqueness should find its place in the church organism without letting differences break the spirit of love’, and noted that this judgment is embodied today in the life of the Russian Orthodox Church. ‘The meaning of today’s celebrations for the Orthodox world lies in your care for the unity of Universal Orthodoxy. Your open dialogue during your primatial visits to old Patriarchates underlines the common Orthodox response to the challenges of time in which religion is ousted from people’s life while moral values are subjected to radical revision’, Metropolitan Niphon said. Patriarch Kirill’s words that ‘there are no boundaries for love’ and his other speeches during his visit to Antioch and calles to young theologians to meet and exchange their spiritual experience as well as his spiritual, political and material aid to Christians in the East, the metropolitan said, have drawn a wide response in the world, showing that visits of Primates have a great importance for Churches and their peoples. ‘Seeing and feeling your concern for the consolidation of pan-Orthodox unity and Universal Orthodoxy, we as representatives of Orthodox Churches to your throne, testify that the day of your ascension to the Moscow Patriarchal throne has become an epoch-making event and a great feast’, Metropolitan Niphon concluded.

Banner In Memory of Rev. Anastasios Diakovasilis in NY Church Source: Greek Reporter Fr. Anastasios Diakovasilis, Presbyter Economos of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Flushing, New York was a unique priest in his generation. Natalya Mihailova 03 May 2014 “No evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death.” So said  Plato . The old sage’s words doubtless apply to the late Reverend Anastasios Diakovasilis, Presbyter Economos of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Flushing, New York – a priest was unique in his generation. He came from the school of hard knocks, raised during WWII and amid the devastation and poverty of 1950s civil-war-torn Greece, and took refuge in religion and poetry. The late Rev. Anastasios and Presvitera Maria Diakovasilis His legacy extends beyond his mortal life, it seems, as Mrs. Theodora (Dora) Lagos was so moved by the January memorial service two years after his 2012 death that she commissioned a banner in his honour. “I wanted to do something special in his memory,” she explained in a telephone interview. “I asked Father Paul Palesty for guidance. He was most supportive, instructing me in the right choice of buying a Banner of the Ascension in memory of Father Anastasios. With Father Paul’s support, we ordered a banner from the Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Australia. I mentioned my idea to all. Persons and organizations from his island of Nysiros and his friends from the community were happy to support me. I was honored and happy to work with these persons. Their donations made this banner possible, to see something special in Father Anastasios’ name in St. Nicholas Church.” Mrs. Lagos continued saying “the banner cost was hand-delivered on Good Friday, April 18th. The banner is hand-embroidered with gold thread. We raised The remainder of the funds will be used to place the banner in a frame in front of the church with a twenty-four-hour burning  candili  (votive lamp).” The community of St. Nicholas had the honor of viewing the richly embroidered tapestry displayed prominently in front of the altar during the Easter liturgies. Mrs. Theodora Lagos was the motivating force behind this unique memorial in memory of a humble presbyter. She believes “he gave warmth to the sick and lonely person.” ( )

Collection of rare medieval manuscripts exhibited in USA/Православие.Ru Collection of rare medieval manuscripts exhibited in USA Los Angeles, April 10, 2013 Initial I: A Martyr Saint. Cutting from an antiphonal, Lippo Vanni, about 1350–75 An exhibition of medieval manuscripts and books from the collection of the famous English collector, patron, thinker and arts theorist, John Ruskin, is taking place in the J. Paul Getty's Museum in California. Sedmitza.ru reports on this event. According to the museum's website, the exposition " Untold stories: preservation and transformation of manuscripts of medieval period " contains a huge number of manuscripts and printings, as well as illustrations, engravings and fragments of missals, prayer-books, Lives of Saints, historical and other works of the 14th to the early 17th centuries. Stands and electronic displays tell the history of specific manuscripts or books: the circumstances surrounding their creation, correction, Church and secular use. A number of manuscripts could well have become objects of a detective novel: once they were saved from fires caused by wars, stolen or taken as trophies and brought thousands kilometers away from their original locations. Engravings were often cut out from manuscripts, designed, hung on the wall, placed into albums of connoisseurs of arts; they were used as fully independent works of art and collecting. Quite often they lost their value in eyes of their owners. Thus, in records of 1540, one English scribe complained that " cut pieces of pages of ancient leather manuscripts were used as rags for cleaning footwear and candlesticks, as fragments of greaseproof wallpapers, and so on " . Initial V. The Ascension. Lorenzo Monaco, 1410. Specifically, the illustrated Bible, produced in the Marmoutier Abbey in the 800s and later cut into pieces, was used for design of backs of first printed books in the 15th century. Early in the 19th century, under the influence of romantism, interest in the medieval period began to grow and it provided the impulse for extensive academic research of medieval manuscripts. Thanks to scholarly efforts, many illustrations and manuscripts have been restored in their original form.

Currently, there is an almost 300-strong Russian community in Hua Hin. Funds were raised and a small land plot was bought. The hierarch also performed a prayer service at the Trinity Church on the island of Phuket and consecrated a new belfry. He also visited the Samui Island where he performed the rite of great consecration of the Ascension Day Church and a liturgy, Moscow Patriarchate said on its website. Currently, there are active Christian Orthodox churches in Bangkok, Pattaya and on the islands of Phuket and Samui in Thailand. During his trip, which will last until February 17, Archbishop Mark will lay the foundation stone for new churches on the Thail island of Ko Chang, as well as in Sihanoukville and Siem Reap in Cambodia.
