We cannot think of the Ascension without remembering that Christ is returning to the Father to pour the Holy Spirit upon us at Pentecost, ten days after Ascension Thursday. Archimandrite Vassilios Papavassiliou 29 May 2014 Today Is the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ The Ascension: a Beginning, Not an Ending The Ascension: A Beginning, Not an Ending On the Ascension of the Lord and a Reverential Treatment of the Human Body Someone once asked me why the Feast of the Ascension is not a fast day. Perplexed, I inquired why he thought such a feast should be a fast day. He replied: “Because the Lord left humanity on this day, so surely it is a day of sorrow”. It later struck me how many others do not recognise how joyful and important the Feast of the Ascension of Christ is.

Where Should We Ascend? If one read the four Gospels as if they were four separate biographies of Jesus, one might be forgiven for thinking that the Ascension narrated the end of the story.  We have read narratives of Christ’s birth, His baptism, His temptation in the wilderness, His ministry, His crucifixion, His resurrection, and now at the last we come the narrative of His ascension, concluding the story of His life with a heavenly happy ending.  Everyone loves a happy ending, and this one rounds out the story of Jesus by saying in effect, “And He lived happily ever after at the right hand of God.”  In this way of thinking, the story is not finished without the Ascension.

Archpriest Alexander Men (+1990) 01 June 2012 Whom Demons Can’t Harm at All “Christ’s Ascension to Heaven is Also Our Ascension to Heaven” To mark the Leavetaking (Apososis) of the Feast of the Ascension, we offer the following reflection by Fr. Alexander Men: During His earthly life, Christ the Savior liked to withdraw to the mountains, where the sky seemed closer and vast expanses of land were visible. When He was being tempted by the devil in the wilderness, all of whose his temptations he rejected, He was standing on a mountain so high that it seemed that all the kingdoms of the world were visible therefrom. It was on another mountain that He prayed, His face shining and His clothes becoming white and gleaming – this was His Transfiguration. He frequently stopped to spend the night on the Mount of Olives with His disciples. This mount was not far from Jerusalem. It was there, on the eve of His Passion, that the Lord spoke to His disciples about what would happen to the world, to the people, and to Jerusalem.

Christ said to the apostles His last words of comfort and hope (Luke 24:49); then, having walked to the top of the Mount of Olives, He blessed them and went away as if ascending into heaven. Why do I say “as if ascending”? Because the Savior did not fly away to the Moon, but entered into the glory of His Father; He did not leave the world, abandoning us, but is here, among us (Matthew 18:20) always to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Priest Sergei Sveshnikov 27 May 2009 In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Archbishop Nikon (Rklitsky) (+1976) 07 June 2014 What does the phrase ‘Eternal Memory mean? The Holy Church wishes to commune with joy over those who were risen from the dead through the Lord, Who gave us eternal life—not only the host of Holy Angels and all those who live on earth, but also the souls of all those who died from the beginning of humanity, with whom we are bound with the unseen tethers of love, belonging to the Church of Christ and the unity of our very nature. That is why, following the forty-day celebration of the Resurrection of Christ and the nine days of praising the Ascension of the Lord into the sky, the Holy Church, on this Saturday, the eve of the last great feast day, Pentecost, which concludes the Paschal cycle, established the commemoration of all of our forefathers, fathers and brethren, extending to their souls, through grace-filled love, the light of the Resurrection of Christ.
