Campaigns against Christians " There were always Christians in Qusayr -- there were around 10,000 before the war, " says Leila, the matriarch of the Khouri clan. Currently, 11 members of the clan are sharing two rooms. They include the grandmother, grandfather, three daughters, one husband and five children. " Despite the fact that many of our husbands had jobs in the civil service, we still got along well with the rebels during the first months of the insurgency. " The rebels left the Christians alone. The Christians, meanwhile, were keen to preserve their neutrality in the escalating power struggle. But the situation began deteriorating last summer, Leila says, murmuring a bit more before going silent. " We " re too frightened to talk, " her daughter Rim explained, before mustering the courage to continue. " Last summer Salafists came to Qusayr, foreigners. They stirred the local rebels against us, " she says. Soon, an outright campaign against the Christians in Qusayr took shape. " They sermonized on Fridays in the mosques that it was a sacred duty to drive us away, " she says. " We were constantly accused of working for the regime. And Christians had to pay bribes to the jihadists repeatedly in order to avoid getting killed. " Grandmother Leila made the sign of the cross. " Anyone who believes in this cross suffers, " she says. Foreign Jihadists in Combat in Qusayr It is not possible to independently corroborate the Khouri " s version of events, but the basic information seems consistent with what is already known. On April 20, Abdel Ghani Jawhar involuntarily provided proof that foreign jihadists are engaged in combat in Qusayr. Jawhar, a Lebanese national and commander with the terrorist group Fatah al Islam, died that day in the Syrian city. An explosives expert, Jawhar had been in Qusayr to teach rebels how to build bombs and accidentally blew himself up while trying to assemble one. Until his death, Jawhar had been the most wanted man in Lebanon, where he is implicated in the deaths of 200 people. Lebanese authorities confirmed his death in Syria. The fact that the rebels had worked together with a man like Jawhar fomented fears after his death that the ranks of insurgents are increasingly becoming infiltrated by international terrorists.

Christians hold demo in Damascus Damascus, October 27, 2013 Christians in Damascus have held a demonstration to call for the release of relatives from the ‘hands of the armed groups.’ The demonstration was held outside a cathedral in the Syrian capital on Saturday. Protesters held placards reading, “Free our relatives from the hands of the armed groups,” making reference to the foreign-backed militants operating inside Syria. Bishop Matta Khouri of St. George Cathedral said in an address to the demonstrators that Christians “demand the urgent intervention” of the international community “to set free all the kidnapped in all besieged cities, to set free all the civil prisoners detained by the power of terrorism.” One of the protesters said, “We are celebrating this mass and this sit-in for our families to be set free, our detained families who are being used as human shields, to be set free in peace.” The Syrian army continues battling Takfiris in the Christian town of Sadad, north of Damascus. The kidnapped Christians are reportedly from Sadad and the town of Hafar. In September, members of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front terrorist group briefly took over the Christian town of Ma’loula, which is home to two of the oldest surviving monasteries in Syria. Syrian troops have managed to recapture most areas of the town. Father Gabriel Dawood, the priest of Syrian Orthodox Cathedral, told the demonstrators on Saturday, “We light candles for Sadad and Hafar, the two villages that join Ma’loula to be destroyed by the darkness lovers and death lovers, they destroyed the peace and tranquility of those two villages.” Nearly three years of turmoil in Syria has claimed the lives of many people including large numbers of Syrian security forces. Statistics compiled by the United Nations show that over 100,000 people have died and millions displaced due to the crisis. Press TV 28 октября 2013 г. ... Iran’s Christians celebrate New Year Tehran, January 2, 2015 As Christians around the world celebrate Christmas, the holiday season is also observed in Iran, a predominantly Muslim nation where Christians make up some 1% of the country’s approximate population of 77.5 million, the Al-Monitor said in an article. Christmas trees decorated with red, green, and gold gift boxes placed behind shop windows or at the entrances of different shopping malls and hotels can be seen across Christian neighborhoods of Iran, it added. According to the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), over 117,000 Christians reside in Iran, most of whom are Armenians who are followers of the Oriental Orthodox branch of Christianity. More than 46,000 members of this minority group live in Tehran. Assyrians, Catholics, Protestants, and Evangelical Christians make up the remainder of Iran’s Christian population. Despite being a minority, Iran’s Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians are recognized as established religious minorities and are represented in parliament, and enjoy freedom to practice their religions and perform their religious rituals. “You cannot celebrate Christmas in any Islamic country the way we do in Iran,” Rafi Moradians, an Iranian Armenian in Tehran, told Al-Monitor. Referring to the community’s exclusive sport and cultural club, Rafi said, “Authorities do not impose any restrictions on us. We attend church services and there are also special celebrations at the Ararat Club.” In recent years, municipal authorities have also put up banners celebrating the birth of Jesus on many main streets and at the St. Sarkis Armenian Church on Villa Avenue, where a service is held every year. Unlike other countries in the region where public celebration of Christmas is limited to hotels frequented by foreigners, there is no such restriction in Tehran. Ordinary Iranians are not alone in the holiday celebrations and in exchanging greetings at Christmas time. This year, President Hassan Rouhani sent season’s greetings to Pope Francis and world leaders. Through his Twitter account, Rouhani reached out to Christians around the globe, as well as those in Iran. “May Jesus Christ, the prophet of peace and love, bless us all on this day. Wishing Merry #Christmas to those celebrating, esp #Iranian Christians,” he tweeted. Also, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif used his 100th tweet to express hope for a more peaceful 2015. The Twitter account belonging to the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei also featured a series of messages on the occasion of Christmas. One of the messages read: “It’s time for all caring Muslims, Christians & Jews to obey the prophets & truly honor #Jesus’ birthday by standing up against Israeli crimes.” 4 января 2015 г. Syria: Remains of five Christians abducted four years ago by rebels in Maaloula finally laid to rest Source: Aid to the Church in Need On Tuesday 25th April, in Damascus, Melkite Catholic Patriarch Gregory III Laham of Antioch finally celebrated the funeral Mass for five Syrian Christians who had been abducted in 2013 by Islamist extremist rebels in the city of Maaloula. Following the Mass, their remains were finally laid to rest in this majority Christian city from which they had originated. According to information given to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) by sources within the Melkite Catholic patriarchate, the unidentified remains of five bodies were discovered three months ago in a cave in the Lebanese region of Irsal (Aarsal), on the frontier with Syria. After the necessary investigations and tests the remains were finally identified as belonging to 5 of the 6 individuals abducted on 7th September 2013 by Jabhat al-Nusra, one of the rebel factions involved in the Syrian conflict. There is still no news concerning the sixth person, who was abducted at the same time, again according to the same sources. The Lebanese authorities formally handed over the remains to the Syrian authorities in the frontier town of Jdeidet Yabous, from where they were transferred to Bab Touma, a predominantly Christian suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus, where the funeral was held. All five individuals were Christians, four of them belonging to the Greek-Catholic Church and one to the Greek Orthodox Church. In his homily, His Beatitude Gregory III Laham spoke of the strength of a love that is stronger than death: “There is no greater love than to give oneself for his loved ones! Jesus Christ gave up his life for us; our martyrs gave up their lives for the love of their God and Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross and came back to life for us.” At the same time the Patriarch emphasised the fortitude in faith of “our five martyrs” (Ghassan Shanis, Dawoud Milaneh, Chadi Taalab, Atef Kalloumeh, Jihad Taalab) who now “join the martyrs of 7th September 2013 (Michael Taalab, Antoun Taalab, and Sarkis Zakhm), who were murdered after they declared their faith in Jesus Christ, refusing to deny their faith to protect their lives.” Referring to the sixth victim, Patriarch Gregory added, “We also remember our beloved Moussa Shanis, who is still missing.” And he included in his prayers all the Christians murdered for their faith in the Middle East in recent years: “We remember all our martyrs, the Christian martyrs from all over Syria and especially in Homs, Aleppo, Damascus and Hauran. And we likewise remember the martyrs in Cairo, Alexandria, Baghdad, Mosul and the plains of Nineveh.”

Missing clerics in Syria… Fate unknown April 22, 2015 Debris is seen inside a badly damaged church in the Monastery of Mar Sarkis in the ancient Christian town of Maaloula, Syria. File photo      On Sunday, the Eastern Orthodox Church appealed to the international community to help discover the fate of two senior clerics kidnapped in Syria’s northern Aleppo province two years ago. On April 22, 2013, gunmen abducted Archbishop Gregorius Yohanna Ibrahim of the Syriac Orthodox Church and Bishop Boulos Yazigi of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Kfar Dael area. Nothing has been heard of them since then. “We hope the bishops are alive, but unfortunately the whole world remains silent, and nobody has provided us with material proof,” said the patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Antioch, Yohanna Yazigi (John X of Antioch), the brother of one of the kidnapped prelates. Speaking in Lebanon, he called on “the entire international community and international organisations to mobilise” and discover the fate of the missing men, Lebanon’s ANI news agency reported. “We have tried to negotiate with everyone who can help in this affair, but unfortunately there is total silence,” Yazigi said. Tens of thousands of people have been kidnapped or reported missing in Syria since the conflict there began four years ago, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor says. Like their fellow Muslims, many Syrian Christians have fled the country because of the violence after jihadists moved into certain areas. Italian Jesuit priest Paolo Dall’Oglio was kidnapped in late July 2013 in Raqqa province, stronghold of the extremist Islamic State group. His fate also remains unknown. In April last year, Dutch Jesuit priest Frans van der Lugt was shot by unknown assailants in the rebel-held old city of Homs after refusing to leave so he could help the poor during a suffocating regime siege. And in March last year, 13 Syrian nuns, abducted by a rebel group north of Damascus, were released after mediation. 22 апреля 2015 г.
