Patriarch Irinej said that the celebration of 17 centuries since the adoption of the Edict of Milan is an opportunity for Orthodox nations to come closer to each other, and also to extend their “brotherly hand to other close churches and religions.” Patriarch Kirill said that the Milan Edict celebrations in Serbia are also an opportunity to analyze all issues of importance to the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches. Patriarch Kirill said that the Edict of Milan defines the relationship between the church and state, which is the Christian foundation for the development of European civilization, and pointed to the need to constantly remind everyone about it when they try to deny the importance of the Edict of Milan. The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest Orthodox church in the world and an Old Calendarist just like the Serbian Orthodox Church. Tanjug.rs 5 октября 2013 г. ... Statement of Interreligious Council of Russia concerning the situation in the Ukraine/Православие.Ru Statement of Interreligious Council of Russia concerning the situation in the Ukraine Moscow, April 3, 2014 On April 3, 2014, in the Danilovskaya hotel, under the chairmanship of head of the Moscow Patriarchate " s Department for Church and Society Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin a regular working session of the Interreligious Council of Russia took place. Moscow government representative A.A. Ignatenko, representative of Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation I.K. Korostelev were present at the event in addition to representatives of traditional faiths of Russia, reports Patriarchia.ru . The statement of the Interreligious Council of Russia concerning the situation in the Ukraine: " We, the heads and representatives of traditional religious communities of Russia, express our deep concern in connection with the ongoing events in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian and Russian peoples are united by the centuries-old common history, and inseparable spiritual, cultural and kindred relationships. Our fraternal nations must cherish this commonality and work towards its development. We categorically condemn the provocation of ethnic conflicts, the derivation of political dividends from the people " s suffering. We hope that no one ever manages to change the Ukraine into a state that is hostile to Russia. We also feel certain that the wise and freedom-loving Ukrainian nation must preserve its right to an independent choice of its historical path, of its own values, which cannot be torn from its many centuries’ history, its moral standards, its model of organization of economics, public and state life. It is also important to preserve the common cultural and spiritual space of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Respecting the right of all Ukrainian residents and various public groups to freely choose their path of development, we are calling all to do their best to peacefully and mutually acceptably settle the existing controversies and disagreements. We consider intolerable any language-related, ethnic, religious and political discrimination. It is the recognition of the full extent of the legal rights of various ethnic, regional and religious communities, including a right to participation in determination of fate of the whole state with respect for traditional values of the majority of the nation, that can prevent new sources of instability. We feel as if they are our own wounds the killing of people, the appearance of refugees, the increase of intolerance and mutual indifference in Ukrainian society, persecution of certain religious and social figures, threats to the normal functioning of monasteries, churches, mosques and synagogues.

Tweet Нравится Theophany “bathing” not a sport, not for forgiveness of sins says St. Petersburg Diocese Moscow, January 17, 2017 Photo:      The St. Petersburg Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church is calling upon all faithful to sensibly approach Theophany “bathing” in fonts, pools, creeks, and ponds, neither for sport nor for forgiveness of sins. “There is a belief that if you immerse yourself in a font, you will wash away all your sins. I hasten to disappoint you,” says Fr. Bogdan Polevoi of the Joy of All Who Sorrow podvoriye of the Holy Trinity-Zelenesk Monastery, “but this is absolutely not true. If you led an indecent life for a whole year, allowing yourself anything, and then decide that if you come and plunge on January 18 or 19, you will be clean, pure, and wonderful—this is a mistaken belief,” he stated in a press conference with Interfax-Religion on Tuesday. It is a widespread custom in Russia to plunge three times into freezing bodies of water, often in Cross-shaped holes, or in pools set up throughout the cities on the feast of the Theophany—the Lord’s Baptism, on January 18 and 19. Fr. Bogdan is urging all participants to remember and perceive the sacred meaning of the act, without which it becomes “nothing more than some kind of sport or extreme procedure.” The Church has no official position on Theophany bathing as an ecclesiastical custom Fr. Bogdan reminds. Rather it is a good and pious folk custom which arose relatively recently. Emergency personnel will be standing by for the more than 1.5 million expected participants throughout the country, for which more than 3,500 designated places will be set up. 17 января 2017 г. Christianity Growing Among China " s Well-Educated/Православие.Ru Christianity Growing Among China " s Well-Educated August 20, 2015 Although persecution has been growing in China recently, experts say so is Christianity. Despite the recent campaign to take down the large crosses atop many Chinese churches, Christianity is gaining ground in China, particularly among the well-educated. In 1980 it was estimated that there were about 10 million Christians in China, now estimates say there are about 100 million, according to a Christian Today report. Why this exponential growth? Two academics provide an answer. Rodney Stark and Xiuhua Wang in their new book " A Star in the East: The Rise of Christianity in China, " posit that Christianity is growing in China, particularly among the well-educated, because old Chinese religions such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism do not fit in well with the modern world and are often seen as “anti-progress.” Stark stated that many Chinese individuals believe Christianity is the only religion that allows them to move from their cultural traditions and past into the modern world of industry and technology. Whereas the traditional Chinese religions focus on China’s glorious past and don’t hold much hope for the future, Christianity provides a framework in which to explore the meaning of life in the modern era which is something many Chinese are searching for. 20 августа 2015 г. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk sums up the Search for Scriptures theological conference 13 November 2021 year 18:26 On November 12, 2021, the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, who is in the USA with a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and at the invitation of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada, attended the plenary sessions of the academic-theological conference on “Search for Scriptures”, which took place at St. Vladimir’s Seminary in New York. The conference gathered leading American specialists in the New Testament studies, including Professor Emeritus Carl Holladay, Kendler School of Theology, the Emory University; Professor of Biblical Studies Craig Keenner, Asbury Theological Seminary; Professor of New Testament Studies Gregory Sterling, Yale School of Divinity; Professor Emeritus Edit Humphrey, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; Prof Garwood Anderson, dean of the Nashotah-House Theological Seminary; Mr John Barnet, Associate Professor at the Chair of the New Testament, St. Vladimir’s Seminary; Associate Professor Bruce Beck, the Holy Cross Seminary in Brooklyn, MA; Prof of Religion and Philosophy James Walles, dean of the Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Ten. Each of the scholars who came to St. Vladimir’s Seminary presented a paper. Many speakers pointed to the importance of dialogue between the Orthodox Church and representatives of the contemporary biblical scholarship, which for the most part ignores the patristic tradition of interpreting Holy Scriptures while in Orthodoxy precisely this tradition is considered normative. Summing up the conference, Metropolitan Hilarion noted that the four canonical Gospels are the main and only sources from which information about the life and teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ should be drawn. Neither the apocryphal Gospels, nor any other “alternative sources” can be perceived as containing reliable information about Him. And the most authoritative interpretations of the Gospels is that which has formed within the Church and has been approved by it. At the same time, Orthodox theologians should not ignore the achievements of contemporary Bible studies in those aspects that do not contradict the Orthodox doctrine. Dialogue between representatives of the Orthodox Church and contemporary biblical scholarship is important for the both sides, Metropolitan Hilarion emphasized. Long gone are those periods in our history when it was possible to have an innate sense of the actual identity of God, or a moral assurance as to the purpose or providence of God. No longer is the name of God evoked at the center of life and understanding; it is now spoken only at the peripheries, in those boundary situations where understanding and experience break down. God has increasingly and ever more comprehensively become for us a name of total and ultimate mystery, a mystery in the presence of which we can neither act nor speak (T. J. J. Inmates of two penal colonies receive Baptism Arkhangelsk, July 11, 2013 Clergymen provide pastoral care to the churches located in these penal institutions. On one of these visits, an important Church Sacrament, Baptism, was performed in the penal colonies of the Russian Federal Service of Execution of Punishments Administration in the Arkhangelsk region. The church at the penal colony No. 14 (the town of Velsk), dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God of Tender Feeling (Umilenie), is open seven days a week: those who need spiritual support can come and pray before the icons, and choose useful literature in the rich church library in which more than 2000 books and journals have already been collected. Frequent guests of the church, the Dean of Velsk district Father Andrew (Vermilov) and Father Dimitry (Chashin), regularly perform in the small church the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. This time, sixteen prisoners have recieved Baptism. " In August, it will be two years since the church moved to a separate building constructed especially for it. Dozens of services have been celebrated here and over 60 prisoners have been baptized. Religion helps many in this colony to become kinder, more patient, and to live in harmony with one " s soul, " commented Alexander Korotaev, head of the Department for educational work with convicts of the Federal Official Institution of the penal colony No. 14. In the Church of the penal colony No. 4 (the town of Kotlas), the Sacrament of Baptism was administered by Archpriest Sergiy (Rihter). Fr. Sergiy has thoroughly explained the rite to the convicts, so that they would be fully aware of what was happening. This time, the rector of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God united six prisoners to the Orthodox Church. " Each visit of Father Sergiy is a true event for the inmates. His missionary activity in the institution includes not only Church services; the Rector is also a member of the board of trusties at the colony. He always attends the meetings of certification committees where questions on petitions changes in punishments are considered, " explained the deputy chief of the Federal Official Institution of the penal colony No. 4, Alexander Ekimov. There is no doubt that by teaching the Gospel to inmates, they will gradually acquire the spiritual and moral values that will enable them in the future to find their way in life with dignity.
