Revealing secret lives of saints in Russia " s Orthodox literature/Православие.Ru Revealing secret lives of saints in Russia " s Orthodox literature Archimandrite Tikhon Shevkunov, abbot of the small, yet very active Sretensky Monastery. Source: ITAR-TASS. Alisa Orlova One of the most popular books among Russian readers right now could be considered a modern version of The Lives of the Saints, Everyday Saints , a book about the lives of monks and priests written by a monk is sitting on the Russian bestseller lists and selling out its print runs. In September 2011, the Olma Media Group debuted a new book at the Moscow Book Fair. The book was Everday Saints by Archimandrite Tikhon Shevkunov, abbot of the small, yet very active Sretensky Monastery, and it tells miraculous – albeit true – stories from the lives of contemporary Orthodox monks and priests. Olma already bet big on the book, giving it a 60,000 copy first print run – five to ten times higher than a standard first printing. Nevertheless, few saw the real miracle coming – the book has made it on to the list of bestsellers in Moscow bookstores and has remained there for many months; there have already been four editions and the total number of copies exceeds 800,000. Online bookseller Ozon.ru has nominated Everyday Saints for the Runet award and it is leading the popular vote for the prestigious«Bolshaya Kniga» (Big Book) Prize. Archimandrite Tikhon’s book has been translated into Serbian, Greek and French, it is being translated into English and talks are underway to have the book translated into German, Italian and French. The book has become a way for ordinary Russians to learn about religious life. The stories do not seem like the typical relgious literature written for neophytes, which combine a Soviet-style didactic tone with tried-and-true parables from the Bible; these are abundant in any Russian church shop. The stories are also unlike the other kind of religious literature common in Russia – more philisophical texts that require some preparation and knowledge of the faith to appreciate. Everyday Saints is a book accessible to all readers.

Regrettably, these are not individual incidents but a steady tendency. It should be noted that the discrimination against Christians vary from country to country. Thus, in Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Nigeria and a number of other countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, our brothers and sisters in faith are subjected to persecution and violence based on intolerance and extremism, while in Europe, which has been Christian from the time immemorial, they are driven away from public life and deprived of the right to criticize amoral things under the pretext of tolerance. The Department for External Relations sees the defence of the rights of Christians as a central direction of its work. Our representatives address this problem during meetings and conferences, underscoring its importance in their contacts with international organizations. On May 30, 2011, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church issued a Statement concerning the growing manifestations of Christianophobia in the world in which the Church clearly formulated her position and called upon the world community to develop ‘a comprehensive and effective mechanism of the protection of Christians and Christian communities’. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, an international conference on Freedom of Faith: the Problem of Discrimination against Christians was held from November 30 to December 1, 2011, in Moscow to become the first issue activity to be held by the Russian Orthodox Church on this matter. On February 8, 2012, during the meeting of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin with leaders of traditional confessions in Russia, I asked him to make the defence of Christians in the countries where they are subjected to persecution one of the major vectors in Russia’s foreign policy. ‘Have no doubt that it will be so’, the prime minister replied. I believe the political support and economic aid to these countries can be given only if they observe the rights and freedoms of Christians. I hope that our efforts will be supported by other states and the followers of all the traditional religions and will lead to concrete measures aimed to improve the situation of Christians. mospat.ru Другие публикации на портале: © 2007-2024 Портал Богослов.Ru. Religious Factor in International Relations. The Metropolitan Hilarion " s lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations/Православие.Ru Religious Factor in International Relations. The Metropolitan Hilarion " s lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations SOURCE: Interfax Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev)      Being in the walls of the country " s leading diplomatic institute, I would like to share with you my thoughts about the place and role of the religious idea in Russian society, international relations and global processes. A hot, though not always sufficiently profound discussion, is being held on this subject. In our country, the debate is normally about the forms in which the Russian Orthodox Church, to which most of our compatriots belong one way or another, should be present in the life of the people. This discussion is also held in the educational sphere. The Church is criticized for allegedly seeking to impose the knowledge of religion on the younger generation beginning from school to university. In this dispute, there is a great deal of arguments which I will not cite now. But you as international workers to be are aware that religion plays an essential role not only on the national level but also in relations between states. Without the knowledge of this role it is impossible to speak of a valid education in the field of international relations. I dare suggest that even in the period of the toughest efforts made in ideologizing the education system in the Soviet time, the Institute of International Relations was the university whose faculty considered the religious factor in international relations not to be an object of application of Soviet ideological cliches but rather a subject to be seriously studied. Neither along practical or theoretical lines is it possible to speak of the development of inter-state relations in most of the regions in the world without the understanding and assessment of the role of religious ideas in forming the world outlook of peoples living in those regions.

Russian theatre cancels Jesus Christ Superstar after ‘blasphemy’ accusations      A Siberian theatre triggered a storm today by cancelling a staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar after a pro-Kremlin nationalist group condemned it as blasphemy. The touring production by Saint Petersburg’s Rock Opera theatre was due to open November 1 in the Musical Theatre of the city of Omsk, but the organisers cancelled it this week following protests by conservative activists. In a report from Omsk, Regnum news agency wrote today that the scandal “has prompted a major public reaction”. It quoted art critic Vadim Klimov as saying: “Today you cannot say that Russia is a secular state.” An obscure group called Family, Love, Fatherland had appealed to regional authorities to stop the staging and applied to hold a demonstration, accusing the long-running musical of “non-stop blasphemy” and “mockery of faith”. The closure comes as relatively small numbers of nationalist activists with Orthodox beliefs are voicing their views more and more stridently, supported by some officials. Amnesty International called the cancellation of the show “the latest example of interference in Russian cultural life by nationalist ‘activists’.” The region’s culture ministry distanced itself from the decision to stop the show, with a spokesman saying the promoter cancelled the show “for some reasons of its own,” RIA Novosti state news agency reported. The Omsk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church also denied any “interference” in the theatre’s repertoire. Last year a director and the head of another Siberian theatre in Novosibirsk went on trial for “desecrating religious symbols” over a staging of Richard Wagner’s Tannhauser opera. The case was dropped, but the theatre’s head was sacked. Rossiya-24 state television reported the decision to close Lloyd Webber’s “legendary rock opera” was most likely taken by the theatre “fearing to repeat the fate” of the Tannhauser staging. The musical was first staged in Russia in 1990 during Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika reforms. Photo: молитва-глас.рф Those who identify with a religious group and regularly attend worship services tend to be happier and more civically engaged than those who do not, a new Pew Research Center survey has found. A  Pew Research Center report  released Thursday on religion and well-being found that religious attendance — rather than religious affiliation — was consistently linked to higher levels of happiness than for those around the world who claim no faith. In the United States specifically, 36 percent of actively religious people said they were “very happy” compared to only 25 percent of “unaffiliated” or “inactive” churchgoers. Religious habits also make a major difference when it comes to the overall health of individuals, the study found. Among Americans who identify as Christian or another religious tradition and attend services at least once a month, 85 percent don’t smoke, compared to 74 percent of the religiously unaffiliated and 72 percent of those who attend services less often. Additionally, Pew researchers found that when it comes to measuring civic participation, people who are actively religious are also more likely to be active in voluntary and community groups. Tweet Нравится Moscow Kremlin launches tours to sites of lost monasteries Moscow, December 12, 2016      A new guided tour has appeared at the Moscow Kremlin for tourists from different countries. According to its organizers, it will be interesting for both students and adults. The new tour’s itinerary passes through the New Kremlin Public Garden where in the fourteenth century centers of religious life were established in Muscovite Rus’: the Chudov Monastery and the Ascension Convent. Then the residence of the Russian emperors appeared on that spot—the Small Nikolaevsky Palace, the press service of the Moscow Kremlin Museums reported. The architectural ensembles were destroyed in the Soviet era. However, the monasteries were immortalized in engravings, and the ancient designs. Their images are also present in paintings of that time. Archaeological excavations have helped to recreate the look of the ruined buildings. In particular, visitors will be able to see segments of the ruined buildings’ foundations. The guides’ narrative will be supplemented with video materials which recreate the architectural appearance of the Moscow Kremlin of past centuries. In October 2016 Press Secretary of the Russian Federation’s President Dmitry Peskov said that reconstruction of these monasteries on the site of the dismantled administrative building is still not on the agenda. " I think such work should have been started a long ago. I am not familiar with any other initiatives to regularly monitor the observance of Orthodox Christians " rights and liberties in Europe. At the same time, there are many projects to monitor religious freedom in Europe and in the world as a whole. But the situation with Orthodox Christians " rights is poorly covered in such reports, " Hegumen Philip (Ryabykh), the Russian Orthodox Church " s representative to the Council of Europe, said, according to the press service.
