Archive Cleric and his flock have returned from schism to canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church 9 July 2019 year 11:05 On 8 July 2019, Metropolitan Antony of Borispol and Brovary, chancellor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, met with a community of the Church of the Dormition in the village of Morozovka, Borispol diocese. Rev. Nikolai Brega, suspended for his deviation into the schism, repented and expressed his wish to return to the bosom of the canonical Church. The Information and Education department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church referring to Metropolitan Antony’sYouTube, he accepted repentance of the former cleric of the diocese and blessed him to return to the bosom of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, saying: ‘As a ruling bishop of the Borispol diocese I accept your repentance. Let us pray to the Lord, asking him to unite that was separated. I hope, Fr. Nikolai, for your conscientious position as well as that of the whole parish.’ Metropolitan Antony reminded those gathered that schism is a sin against the Church. He called ‘the substitution of the Church of Christ for political surrogate’ a misfortune and added that a man, who succumbed into temptation of betraying his Church, ‘takes the path of Judas. But a Christian can always return. As in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, the Lord and the Holy Church are always expecting to embrace this man.’ The hierarch underscored that the Church should not deal with matters of political order. The Church is for the soul and its salvation. You have returned because the Lord has touched your souls and led you to repentance.’  Metropolitan Antony wished the priest and parishioners to leave the temptations behind and be faithful even in the face of pressure and deception. Rev. Nikolai Brega said that the decision to return was taken by the entire community. ‘We discussed the matter during the whole month and resolve d that it was necessary to return to the canonical Chirch and stay far away from any politics. The truth is there where God and the Church, grace and the Holy Spirit are’. So, the whole community has repented and returned to the Church which has nourished us,’ he added. Between hierarchism and conciliarity Although the Orthodox believe that their Church constitutes one single body, institutionally, it is a complex system of communities, which are structured hierarchically. It is a common belief that there is a strict hierarchy in the Orthodox Church. This is true, though partly. The Orthodox Church is in fact a fellowship of the Local Churches, without definite hierarchy between them. Also within the Local Churches the conciliar system is quite strong. Alongside the traditional synodal institutions, where mostly Church hierarchs take part, the Orthodox Church retains much of laic participation in the crucial decision-making. An active laic participation in the Church life was strengthened at the beginning of the XX century. That epoch was marked by radical social changes and revolutions with lower social classes taking upper hand in the political and social life. Similar processes penetrated deep into the life of the Orthodox Churches, having become a sort of ‘socialist’ fashion. In many Local Orthodox Churches the hierarchical synodal system, consisted exclusively of bishops, was transformed into a mixed system, with combination of both hierarchical and laic elements. In the Russian Church, for instance, this ‘socialistic’ trend took shape of a so-called ‘Local Council’ (Поместный Собор). In the Orthodox tradition, the institution of a local council always meant a gathering of bishops only. At the beginning of the XX century, however, under the influence of the social reformations, it was transformed into a sort of clergy-laic congress which included delegates from both clergy and laity. Moreover, this ‘socialistic’ kind of ‘Local Council’ was given an ultimate authority in deciding over the most crucial issues of the Church life. The same processes happened in other Local Churches. For instance, in the Church of Constantinople, the institution with the highest authority consisted of two bodies (δο σματα), hierarchical and laic. A similar institution, Congress of clergy and laity (Κληρικολακ συνλευση) for a long period of time elected Primates of the Church of Greece and took most important decisions in the life of this Church. This list can be continued. Nowadays the institution of mixed hierarchical-laic councils is in decline. Some Local Churches got rid of it long time ago. Some are just in the transition process of coming back to the hierarchy-only councils.

The seventh meeting of the Joint Commissions of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and of the Moscow Patriarchate held in Moscow From June 26-28, 2006, the seventh joint meeting of the Commission of the Moscow Patriarchate on dialog with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and of the Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia on discussions with the Moscow Patriarchate was held at the offices of the Department of External Church Relations at St Danilov Monastery in Moscow. Participating on behalf of the Moscow Patriarchate were: President of the Commission, Archbishop Innokenty of Korsun; Archbishop Evgeny of Verey; Protopriest Vladislav Tsypin; Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov); and Secretary of the Commission, Protopriest Nikolai Balashov. On the side of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia were: President of the ROCOR Commission, Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany; Bishop Ambroise; Archimandrite Luke (Murianka); Protopriest Nikolai Artemoff; and the Commission’s Secretary, Protopriest Alexander Lebedeff. The Chairman of the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, also participated in the discussion of certain questions. The main topic of the meeting was the further steps upon the path of reestablishing church unity in the light of the decisions of the IV All-Diaspora Council and of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, held last May in San Francisco. The proposals expressed by the Council of Bishops of ROCOR regarding the further development of the Act on Canonical Communion were carefully studied. After an exhaustive discussion, a supplemented draft of the Act was prepared for submission to the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia for consideration. Clarifications were made at the meetings on some aspects of the participation of the Moscow Patriarchate in inter-religious and inter-Christian activities. The Commissions also examined other canonical and practical questions which needed to be decided in connection with the reestablishment of ecclesiastical unity. Among these were problems of the existing parishes of the Russian Church Abroad on the canonical territory of the Moscow Patriarchate and of pastoral interrelations between the bishops and clergymen of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and of the Moscow Patriarchate who conduct their ministry abroad. 17 мая 2007 г. ... However, it does not mean that Alexandrian Patriarch Theodoros has entered upon the path of ecumenism—nothing is said about Orthodoxy having union with other Christian communities in Africa.
