Attempt to create Abkhaz " metropolia " will cause deadlock - Russian Orthodox Church Moscow, May 17, 2011 The creation of a new " metropolia " in Abkhazia announced late last week will only make it more difficult to resolve the Abkhaz church issue, the Moscow Patriarchate has said. " The church canon laws do not involve the making of decisions to create new metropolitanates, let alone autocephalous churches, at " clerical-laic " congresses. And the nomination by the " laic congress " of bishop candidates is explicitly prohibited by the canon law, " Archpriest Nikolay Balashov, deputy head of the Synodal Department of External Church Relations, told Interfax-Religion on Tuesday. On May 15 the cleric-laic congress at the New Athos Monastery in Abkhazia announced the creation of a " metropolia " with a center at New Athos, which should gradually transform into an independent Abkhaz Church. The event attendees issued a letter to the primates and synods of manorial Orthodox churches, asking to set up an Orthodox commission led by a representative of the Patriarch of Constantinople to define the canonical status of the Abkhaz Church. " We understand the desire of the Abkhaz people to regulate the situation of the Orthodox religion in this country. However, bringing hot political issues into the life of the church, the division among believers - all this only postpones the possibility of a legitimate resolution of the Abkhaz Church issue, " a Russian Orthodox Church representative said. A member of the Abkhaz clergy, Fr. Vissarion Aplia, earlier urged the clergy and laity not to attend this congress. The Abkhaz Church can stand firmly on its feet with help from the Russian Orthodox Church, he said. The congress is non-canonical, and its resolutions have no legal force for Orthodox believers, he said. Abkhaz Prime Minister Sergey Shamba has expressed concern, while the Georgian Patriarchate urged the congress and all Orthodox believers living in Abkhazia " to raise above the processes inspired by outside forces and to restore the canonical unity with the Georgian Orthodox Church. New Orthodox church consecrated in New York New York City, October 6, 2014      On Saturday, October 4, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York (the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) consecrated the new Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in New York (Brooklyn, Sheepshead Bay). It can be said that for today this is one of the largest Orthodox churches in New York City and is inferior only to the St. Nicholas Cathedral on Manhattan (belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate) in respect of capacity and adornments. Most likely, only the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia on 18th Avenue (the first of four Orthodox churches now active in this NY borough) can rival the newly consecrated church.      The new Church of St. John the Baptist now occupies the building of a former Methodist church; only a small, splendid dome and a distinctive cross above the entrance indicate that this is an Orthodox church. One can understand the joy of the church Rector Archpriest Alexander Belya, the parish council and all the parishioners, who over several years had to move from one rented premise of Brooklyn to another. Within the shortest possible space of time the church was repaired by the Kadar Elite Construction company, led by Michael Kadar. Benefactors and volunteers from among the parishioners actively helped in arranging the church. On Friday evening trowel men were still working here, and on Saturday morning the church was already receiving its parishioners and clergymen from neighboring communities, arriving to the celebration.      Clergy of the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God “Of the Sign”, of the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, the Church of the Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “The Inexhaustible Cup” as well as priests and deacons of other parishes of the diocese concelebrated with Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York at the Divine Liturgy and the church consecration. After the service the constructioin company director Michael Kadar and the churchwarden of the St. John the Baptist’s Church John (Ivan) Belya were presented with the highest award of the ROCOR—the Synodal Order of the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, 3rd Class. The active volunteer builders received diocesan diplomas. Pravoslavie.ru 6 октября 2014 г. Archive Faithful in Zhytomyr region stand in prayer protesting against illegal transfer of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church community to OCU 31 May 2022 year 10:23 On May 29, 2022, in the village of Popelnya, Zhytomyr region, the faithful have been standing in prayer protesting against the illegal transfer of the community of St. Nicholas’ church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to OCU, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reports with reference to the press service of the Zhitomir diocese. The parishioners of the church in Popelnya have been ardently praying for several hours straight. The diocese reports that thanks to the resistance of parishioners it was possible to avoid a conflict with an initiative group which organized the signatures collection for the community’s transfer to the OCU. The parishioners belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the OCU supporters agreed to clear the territory of the church. The police and representatives of the territorial defense unit stayed to stand guard over the church building. The signatures collection was initiated by Vasily Zarechny, a local resident. He called on Archpriest Pyotr Lis, rector of the church, to transfer to the OCU. The rector told the faithful that it was impossible to change the Church as it is impossible to change mother and wife. “This is the Church of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers. Our native Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the only one true canonical Orthodox Church in our land,” he said. The day before the standing in prayer, the cars with loudspeakers were running along the village. The local people were called to come to the church and put their signatures for the transfer to the OCU. Some locals who responded to the call said they had not understood for what they came to vote. Among the signers there were former parishioners of the church and people who called themselves non-believers and even Buddhists. The diocese asks how these people who have nothing in common with this church can seal its fate. “It is interesting to note that contrary to the standard practice of signatures collection, exact residence address was not put next to the signer’s name. Therefore it was impossible to ascertain the identity of the large part of those advocating for the transfer to the OCU,” the diocese points out and adds that issues pertaining to church life must be resolved exclusively by religious community. Russian Orthodox Church obtains official registration in the Kingdom of Cambodia Phnom Penh, July 22, 2013      The representation of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand, which administratively includes Cambodia, has received a resolution from the Minister of Cults and Religions of Cambodia regarding the decision made by the government to officially register the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in Cambodia as a religious organization, reports Sedmitza.ru . The request for the state registration of the Moscow Patriarchate in the country was made after the meeting of the Holy Synod in October 4, 2012, which accepted the newly-established parishes in Cambodia (of St. George the Victory-Bearer in Phnom Penh and Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon in Kampong Saon) into the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Moscow Patriarchate was registered on the territory of Cambodia by its authorities as a religious organization under the name, " Orthodox Christian Church of Cambodia (Patriarchate of Moscow) " . The decision made by Cambodian authorities allows the opening in Cambodia of Orthodox parishes, the purchase and registration of parcels of land in Cambodia in the name of the Church, the building of churches, opening of theological schools, freedom to preach, and so on. In accordance with the resolution of the Ministry of Cults and Religions of Cambodia, the regional representative of the Russian Orthodox Church Archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin) sent notifications of this decision to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. At the present time, upon completion of the registration of the Church bank accounts in Cambodia, fundraising is being planned within all churches of the representation of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in Thailand for the purchase of parcels of land and building for Church use in Phnom Penh and Kampong Saon. The regional representation of the Church is also working to supply the Orthodox parishes in Cambodia with permanent clergy. The representative of the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) in Thailand Archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin) has sent letters of gratitude to the king of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni, Great Supreme Cambodian Patriarch of Buddhists Tep Vong, the Minister of Cults and Religions of Cambodia Min Kinh, as well as the embassies of Cambodia in Russia and Thailand. 23 июля 2013 г. ... Orthodox Christian Church Branches Out in Cranberry      When Frank Harrison moved to Cranberry and started looking for an Orthodox Christian church, he found he had to travel about 10 or 15 miles for the nearest one. He eventually became a member of St. Anthony Orthodox Church in Butler, but as time passed he noticed more people of the Orthodox Christian faith moving into his community. Now members of Mr. Harrison’s church and his pastor, the Rev. Bogdan G. Bucur, have started a weekly outreach in the Cranberry Township Municipal Building to allow other Orthodox Christians a place to meet in their community. The group is open to anyone interested in the Orthodox religion and meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday nights in the Brush Creek Room of the township building. “There were no churches between Butler and downtown Pittsburgh, except for Allison Park. We thought there was a need,” Mr. Harrison said. Father Bucur, whose church is part of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese, said they are conducting a pan-orthodox service in Cranberry. He said that Orthodox churches traditionally have been built along ethnic lines with each following the same religious principles, but services and traditions vary slightly from group to group. The pan-orthodox service is meant to encompass all Orthodox Christians. In that spirit, Father Bucur said they have welcomed members of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church from Pittsburgh’s North Side, which is part of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese, to the Thursday services. St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church is looking to relocate in Cranberry, he said. “The idea is to meet consistently and persistently, so people will hear about it and come,” Mr. Harrison said. Each Thursday they spend about half an hour in a service and another half hour in discussion, he said. He said they hope to continue these meetings through the end of the year and then assess the interest. “I’m very excited about this. We are starting something which is a little bit like the parable with the mustard seed,” said Father Bucur. “We are hoping it will flourish, but if not at least we will have tried.” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 23 октября 2015 г. In this interview he discusses the history of the Albanian Church, its current witness and struggles, and the nature of Christian marriage today. Статья Priest Antoniy Borisov: The Church of Albania is something mysterious for us. We don’t know a lot about it. Can you tell us about your Church, about its modern situation? What problems does your Church resolve today in this modern situation, and what are some of its successes? Deacon Anastasios Bendo: If you’ve been at a Patriarchal Liturgy of your Church, it is sure that you will have heard the name of the Archbishop of Albania, Anastasios, of Tirana and of all Albania. It is an Apostolic Church, existing since the first century. And it is a Church that has a lot of martyrs, that offered a lot of martyrs in the three first centuries of the persecution of the Christian Church, and in Byzantine times continued its life and its effort by being a loving part of the Orthodox Church. From that time since now, the Church of Albania is present in all the areas of Albanian life. It offers a lot of contribution to the cultural, and spiritual and human areas, and even to the national background of our country. Our Church was recognized as a utocephalous in 1937 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, because until then, it was an Eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Of course, this status, that was a little bit special, was more free; it was like an autonomous Church, but at that time because after the fifteenth century we fell under Ottoman rule – we had to be careful. To be careful, in order to preserve all our traditions and our faith. So, in that time, after the Ottoman rule, when our country earned its liberty again, our Church was proclaimed autocephalous and was recognized not only by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but also by all Orthodox Churches, including the Russian Patriarchate. And our situation is something that it is connected with the past. I mention this briefly.

The Church schism is a bleeding wound on the body of the Ukraine, Holy Synod of UOC MP says Kiev, June 24, 2015 On June 24, 2015, a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) was held at the St. Panteleimon’s Monastery in the Kievan neighborhood of Theophania. The major subject of address of the Holy Synod to the Ukrainian people was the question of overcoming the Church schism. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church always was and still remains open to a constructive dialogue with all who today are outside the unity of the universal Orthodoxy, the message on the UOC website reads. However, cases of aggression and seizure of canonical churches by schismatics (often with the connivance of local authorities) make the restoration of the Church unity much more difficult. The Holy Synod also noted the inadmissibility of state interference in the internal affairs of the Church. Not only does it not further overcoming the Church schism, but it also puts obstacles on this path: “The tragic Church schism has become a bleeding wound on the body of the Ukraine. A portion of our fellow countrymen, who confess the Orthodox faith, already for the third generation have been outside communion with universal Orthodoxy. Lately there have been many attempts to seize our canonical churches and their forcible transfer to the so-called “Kyiv Patriarchate”. By now 23 churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have been seized. Therefore, parishioners of the canonical Ukrainian Church are bereft of any opportunity to attend their own parish churches and freely worship in them. “We are deeply concerned about the fact that unlawful acts against religious communities of our churches are frequently committed with the tacit consent of local authorities, or even with their assistance. All this makes the restoration of Church unity much more difficult… Once again we affirm the willingness of our Church for candid and constructive dialogue with representatives of the unrecognized Church groups within the Ukraine. The dialogue should be based on canon law and implemented without interference by non-Church (secular) factors in the process. Overcoming schisms is an internal Church matter. We understand the interest of the state authority in restoration of the Church unity, but we object to a state interference in the inner Church life,” the statement reads. 29 июня 2015 г.
