Andreas J. Kostenberger A Theology of John’s Gospel and Letters introduces the first volume in the BTNT series. Building on many years of research and study in Johannine literature, Andreas Köstenberger not only furnishes an exhaustive theology of John’s Gospel and letters, but also provides a detailed study of major themes and relates them to the Synoptic Gospels and other New Testament books. Readers will gain an in-depth and holistic grasp of Johannine theology in the larger context of the Bible.D. A. Carson (Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) says about Köstenberger’s volume that “for the comprehensiveness of its coverage in the field of Johannine theology (Gospel and Letters), there is nothing to compare to this work.”I. Howard Marshall (University of Aberdeen) writes, “This book is a ‘first’ in many ways: the first volume that sets the pattern for the quality and style of the new Biblical Theology of the New Testament series published by Zondervan; the first major volume to be devoted specifically to the theology of John’s Gospel and Letters at a high academic level; and the first volume to do so on the basis that here we have an interpretation of John’s theology composed by an eyewitness of the life and passion of Jesus. ”The Biblical Theology of the New Testament SeriesThe Biblical Theology of the New Testament (BTNT) series provides upper college and seminary-level textbooks for students of New Testament theology, interpretation, and exegesis. Pastors and discerning theology readers alike will also benefit from this series. Written at the highest level of academic excellence by recognized experts in the field, the BTNT series not only offers a comprehensive exploration of the theology of every book of the New Testament, including introductory issues and major themes, but also shows how each book relates to the broad picture of New Testament theology. Troparion to St. John the Evangelist, Tone 2 O Apostle John, speaker of divinity, the beloved of Christ God, hasten and deliver thy people powerless in argument; for He on Whose bosom thou didst lean accepteth thee as an intercessor. Beseech Him, therefore, to disperse the cloud of the stubborn nations, asking for us safety and the Great Mercy. Kontakion to St. John the Evangelist, Tone 2 Who can tell of thy mighty works, O virgin Saint John? For thou pourest forth miracles, and art a source of healings, and thou dost intercede for our souls, as the Theologian and the friend of Christ. Today, the Holy Orthodox Church commemorates the repose of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist, St. John the Theologian. As we learn from the Holy Gospels, St. John, one of the sons of Zebedee, was called by Christ to abandon his fishing nets to become a fisher of men and a son of thunder. Saint John became one of the twelve apostles, and despite his being – according to tradition – the youngest, he was one of only three to witness the Transfiguration, the only one to rest his head on the bosom of Christ at the Mystical Supper, and the only one to follow Him to the foot of the Cross. The Gospel of John is distinctive for its theological depth and profundity. The Holy Evangelist begins with the proclamation of Christ as the Word, the  Logos , become flesh. The Church places the reading of this gospel only during the days after Pascha ,  most likely because the richness of its theology was judged to be heard only by those initiated in the Faith – hence its reading is placed after the traditional period of catechesis of converts during Lent and their baptisms on Holy Saturday. He, of course, also authored three universal epistles and a book of his revelation granted on the island of Patmos – all are included in the canonical books of the New Testament. In a homily in honor of St. John, Saint Gregory Palamas points out some beautiful parallels with which Our Lord Jesus Christ blessed the life of the saint:

http://pravmir.com/falling-asleep-of-st-...

Jesus Christ began His preaching with the same words as John the Baptist: “Repent: for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). There existed a very close connection between John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. When the Lord began His preaching, John the Baptist’s mission came to an end, for which reason John said of Christ: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). And even before Christ set out on the path of humiliation, depletion, and kenosis, John the Forerunner had already followed this path, suffering confinement in prison and execution by order of Herod. We know – the Evangelists do not hide this from us – that John the Forerunner, while in prison, sent his disciples to ask Jesus: “Art Thou He that should come, or do we look for another?” (Matthew 11:3). The answer to this question was crucial for John the Baptist, for if Jesus were not the Christ, then John the Baptist’s mission would have turned out to be futile, and his entire life from beginning to end a mistake. Jesus did not answer directly, but asked that this be conveyed: “Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached to them” (Matthew 11:4-6). John the Baptist received a word of warning from Christ: do not be tempted, do not doubt, and do not stumble along the final stage of your journey. And he was not tempted, did not doubt, and did not stumble, but preserved fidelity to Christ until the end, becoming the first Christian martyr. He followed the way of the cross, Christ’s way, and descended into Hades, there to witness to the coming of the Savior. Throughout his life, John the Forerunner demonstrated that it is possible to follow Christ and that man can grow to the measure of the likeness of Christ, in order to give his whole life over to God, diminishing himself and exhausting himself even unto death, and death on the cross.
