St. Matthew and St. Mark note that this took place after John’s imprisonment, while St. John adds that the reason for this was the rumor that Jesus was acquiring and baptizing more disciples than John the Baptist, although the Evangelist explains that it was not He Himself Who was baptizing them, but His disciples. After John’s imprisonment, the Pharisees’ entire hostility focused on Jesus, Who began to seem to them more dangerous than the Baptist. Since the time of His suffering had not yet arrived, Jesus leaves Judea and goes to Galilee, in order to avoid persecution by His envious opponents. Only one Evangelist, St. John, tells the story of Christ’s conversation with the Samaritan woman that occurred on the way to Galilee.

Witness in Judea, Samaria, and Galilee True Purification. 2:1-25 The Witness of the First Disciples. 1:19–51 ALTHOUGH THE GOSPEL " S NARRATIVE opens with 1:19, the implied reader knows Jesus» origin from 1:1–18 (and most of John " s earliest audience probably were already Christians; see introduction). That the narrative can open abruptly after the prologue (especially the preparation of 1:6–8,15) is to be expected, and a Diaspora audience conditioned by Mediterranean dramatic culture would feel at home here. Greek dramas often started by informing the viewer of what had happened prior to the opening of the play. The Odyssey opens abruptly and afterwards explains more of Odysseus " s travels through flashbacks, but its hearers could also presuppose what they knew of Odysseus from stories about him in the Iliad (if they knew that work first; probably they heard both repeatedly). The prologue introduces John the Baptist as a model witness for Jesus, leading immediately into a section (1:19–51) about the nature of witness and disciple-making for Jesus, which John the Baptist (1:19–28) opens. 3790 Apart from the prologue, the evangelist starts his Gospel essentially where Mark did and early Christian evangelists often did (Acts 1:22; 10:37; 13:24). 3791 This witness also fits the Gospel " s specifically Jewish framework by opening with a witness to Israel (1:31,49) embraced by true Israelites (1:47). 3792 The writer of the Fourth Gospel wishes his audience not only to continue in the faith themselves (20:31), but to join him in openly confessing Christ (12:42–43), proclaiming him in a hostile world (15:26–27).

Much like the Three Great Hierarchs, Saints Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian, whose contribution to Greek literature tends to overshadow what made them such remarkable saints, Cyril and Methodius’ life and sanctity also are frequently overshadowed by their contribution to Slavonic literature through the invention of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets. Yet they are greatly revered outside the Slav world. So what makes these saints so significant for Orthodox Christians with little or no connection with or interest in the Slavonic language?

Multimedia Contact us Искать Искать The Evangelist Luke: Historian and Literary Genius Dr. Andrei Desnitsky 31 October 2012 Will Our Names Be Written In Heaven? Of all four Evangelists, it is the Apostle Luke who can be called an historian in the strict sense of the word. His two-part work, the Gospel and the Acts of the Holy Apostles, is a conscientious and precise account of events in sequence; it is executed in accordance with all the requirements of the historical genre. Moreover, Luke’s writing is a great literary work, written in impeccable Greek. There is disagreement among contemporary scholars and commentators about which of the Evangelists wrote first: Matthew or Mark. But it is safe to assert that Luke was the third in order. He certainly knew Mark’s text well, and possible Matthew’s; he also made use of other sources. These three are often called the “synoptics”; the Greek word means that these three authors “saw together.” Their texts are much more similar to one another than to the Gospel according to John, which was written much later and in an entirely different manner; he sought to supplement the synoptics by elaborating on that which they had remained silent about.

Go and Proclaim the Good News For many Christians today the word “gospel” quickly brings to mind one of the four written Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. For the earliest Christians, however, the term “gospel” was not about books but about the central message of salvation itself, communicated with the living voice. This oral message preceded by many years the composition of the four Gospels and also the other New Testament writings. This oral message helped shape the intrinsic evangelical character as these documents.  The early Christian preachers and teachers, as well as the authors of the New Testament when composing their texts, referred to the message of salvation by means of a several key terms.

It certainly formed the bedrock of Evangelical preaching and the goal of such preachers as Billy Graham. The phrase left the subculture of Evangelicalism and entered the conceptual landscape and the vocabulary of mainstream American culture with the (then) Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter, who surprised the mainstream media with his candid admission that he had been born again and that this formed the foundation of his life. The phrase “being born again” is now almost synonymous with Protestant Evangelicalism, and often functions as a kind of verbal denominational tag. Since the phrase also appears in the baptismal liturgy of the Orthodox Church (when the priest refers to the baptismal candidates as those “wishing to be born again through my unworthy ministry”) it is worth asking two questions: 1) “What precisely does it mean to enter the Kingdom of God?” and 2) “What does it mean to be born again?” The answers are not quite what Dr. Billy Graham might have thought during his preaching crusades.

The Light of the Resurrection Lazarus was a close friend of Christ, from Bethany, about three kilometers east of Jerusalem. He lived there with his sisters Mary and Martha, and they often gave hospitality to Jesus (Luke 10:38-40; John 12:1-3). John the Evangelist informs us (John 11) how one day Jesus was notified of the death of Lazarus. Four days later He arrived in Bethany, not only to bring comfort to Lazarus’ grieving sisters, but to show the power of God and perform His greatest miracle by raising him from the dead, in anticipation of His own resurrection.
