“I also thank the bishops of our Church, carrying out their ministry in various countries, to the hierarchs who are the first to respond to the challenges posed by those striving to destroy the unity of our Church, as well as by those who for ideological reasons fight against the Church, refusing to see her as a positive factor in the human life. I know that in their ministry bishops rely on the clergy, just as I rely, first of all, on the Moscow clerics and on active laypeople of different age, including the young committed people. Today it is our laypeople, including the youth, who are performing great deeds, often quietly and unnoticeably, but these deeds are changing the moral climate in our country. “What can I say about myself? Nothing more than we have heard today in St Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. This year my birthday is on the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost. Of course, it is just a coincidence, but there is nothing fortuitous about God. And St Paul’s words are the only words I can say today with full responsibility and faith. ‘But God forbid that I should glory,’ St Paul writes, ‘save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.’ Amen.” DECR Communication Service 22 ноября 2016 г. Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf APOSTLE APOSTLE. 1) From Greek meaning a “messenger” or “one sent,” it is most probably Biblically related to the Hebrew shaliach, which is used of Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and Ezekiel, who function as God’s ambassadors. Thus, Jesus identified himself as being “sent” by the Father and his followers became apostles when they were “sent out” by him to proclaim the Gospel and continue his ministry, previous to which they were only disciples. Noted apostles include the Twelve, Matthias who replaced Judas, and Paul and Barnabas as apostles to the Gentiles. Still, the Orthodox Church continues the list to include the Seventy ( Lk 10 ), if not the 500 ( 1Cor 15 ), then all who subsequently function as apostles to other peoples, e.g., Mary Magdalene, Nina of Georgia, Constantine-Cyril and Methodius, Innocent Veniaminov (qq.v.), et al. The significant difference between this reckoning and the Western definition is that many women are included in the Eastern list, possessing the same “authority” as apostle as their male counterparts. Also, the list of apostles is clearly distinguishable from the list of bishops, since the ministries function differently. Apostleship is clearly a ministry open to women in the Eastern Church. Further, the honorific “equal-to-the-apostles” is applied to temporal rulers responsible for establishing Christianity in their domains. Thus, the pairs Constantine and Helen, and Vladimir and Olga, are accorded the titles equal-to-the-apostles for making Christianity the state religion of the Roman-Byzantine and Rus’-Russian Empires, respectively. It is well known in the Orthodox ethos that the Christian commitment of the older matriarch in each of these two pairs preceded that of the male; and the conversions of two of the largest empires was initiated by and is dependent upon these women. 2) The name of the epistle reading during the Divine Liturgy, always taken from Acts or one of the epistles; similarly, it is the name of the liturgical book (q.v.) containing Acts and all the epistles. The early patristic writers, putting them together, came up with an enumeration of five different ranks. Dionysius the Areopagite added to that list of five the separate ranks of Angel, Archangel, Seraph, and Cherubim, and thus set out the definitive list of the “Nine Orders” of the angels which would form the basic understanding of both the Latin and Eastern churches ever after (in ascending order: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Powers, Virtues, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim). The Seraphim occupied the seventh heaven alongside God, and their proximity to the Divine Presence resulted in their eruption into pure fire (in such a way are they always depicted in iconography). The Cherubim were the living throne of God (a prayer recalling this is said by the priest as he moves to the high place during the divine liturgy in the course of the singing of the Trisagion hymn). The angels were seen to be endowed with almost infinite mobility and vast powers. From the Byzan- tine-era liturgy onwards, the deacons often assumed a role of symbolizing the angelic orders attendant on the liturgy, and the imperial eunuchs (sexless, as Jesus had said the angels were in heaven: Mk. 12.25 ) had the special task of singing the Cherubic hymn at the time of the Great Entrance: “We who in a mystery represent the Cherubim, and sing the thrice holy hymn to the life- creating trinity, now lay aside all earthly cares, that we may receive the King of all who comes escorted by the ranks of unseen angels.” Devotion to the angels in the Orthodox Church has always been strong, and continues to this day as a marked aspect of normal Christian life. They are referred to as the “Bodiless Powers,” and several feasts in the course of the year are dedicated to them, especially to Michael and Gabriel, known as the Taxiarchs (leader of heavenly hosts). Ordinary Mondays in the Orthodox week are dedicated to them. The Sticheron for Vespers dedicated to the bodiless powers reads as follows: “Most radiant attendants of the triune Godhead; you angels who serve as supreme commanders, with all the powers on high you cry out rejoicing – Holy are you O Co-Eternal Word; Holy are you the Holy Spirit; one glory, one kingdom, one nature, one Godhead and power.” SEE ALSO: Cherubikon; Communion of Saints; Divine Liturgy, Orthodox REFERENCES AND SUGGESTED READINGS Danielou, J. Tweet Нравится Niarchos Foundation Honors Archbishop Iakovos’ Memory Source: Orthodox Christian Network New York, December 17, 2015      The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America announces with appreciation and joy the creation of a special Reflection Area, named after our late Archbishop Iakovos, in the newly built National African-American History and Culture Museum in Washington, DC. This is made possible by the significant contribution of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for two million dollars and the personal contribution of Andreas Dracopoulos the SNF’s Co-President, for one million. These grants were made in honor of Archbishop Iakovos’ leadership and legacy in the area of civil and human rights. The Museum, currently under construction, is expected to open in 2016, and it aspires to become a landmark that will house the African-American history. In the middle of last month the museum featured a high-tech projection of images on its outside walls with the title “Commemorate and Celebrate Freedom,” featuring the period from the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which ended slavery in 1865, to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The images featured Archbishop Iakovos with Martin Luther King Jr. and The Washington Post published a first-page photograph of that moment in the projection, on Nov. 16, 2015. The Greek Orthodox Church in America and His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios continue the longstanding legacy of Archbishop Iakovos to fight against racism and to defend human rights. Metropolitan Hilarion celebrates the Day of All Saints at Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria Moscow, June 8, 2015      On June 7, 2015, the Day of All Saints, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR), led the parishioners of the church of All Saint-at-Kulishki, the Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, in celebrating the Divine Liturgy. The liturgy was celebrated in Greek and Church Slavonic. After the liturgy the DECR chairman was greeted by Metropolitan Athanasios of Kyrenia, rector of the Representation, who said in particular, ‘The fact that you have accepted our invitation and our common celebration of the great Sacrament do not just point out the good relations between the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Moscow but, more important, make it visible that the holy Churches of God are bound up by inseparable unity, comprising One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church’.      In his response, Metropolitan Hilarion spoke about the Day of All Saints as a feast commemorating hundreds of thousands of people who, following Christ, took the path of sanctity. The Lord Jesus Christ, he said, came out against the understanding of sanctity as one’s isolation from society and the need to observe a whole bulk of prescriptions and statutes. The Lord told very simple things to people: ‘the kingdom of God is within you’, and the spiritual struggle for sanctity is waged within a person. Speaking about martyrs and confessors who followed Christ on the way to sanctity in times of persecution against the Church, Metropolitan Hilarion pointed to the fact that the Church has again become persecuted today in the Middle East, where Christianity was born and in North Africa, where Christians have become a persecuted minority. ‘We pray every day that the Lord may give us peaceful times. We pray for all Local Orthodox Churches and especially for such old Patriarchates as that of Alexandria founded by St. Mark, asking the Lord that He may preserve and multiply Christian faith in the countries in which it is subjected to oppression and persecution today’. Addressing Metropolitan Athanasios, His Eminence Hilarion thanked him for the opportunity to celebrate together and to pray for His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore, saying, ‘ We know and love him. He used to serve in Odessa as representative of the Patriarch of Alexandria to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He has covered a long and difficult path and founded a great number of church communities in various African countries… I rejoice in the fact that the spiritual ties between our two Churches are developing and strengthening today including through your efforts’. 8 июня 2015 г. Venerable Simeon Of Pângrai Venerable Saints Simeon and Amphilochius Of Pângrai      Venerable Simeon was born at the beginning of the fifteenth century in a village close to Piatra Neam city, at the time of the pious ruler Prince Alexander the Kind (1400-1432). From his youth he was a very religious man, choosing to live the monastic life and joining the community of Bistria Monastery. After much ascetic practice and obedience, in 1432 he retired together with two of his disciples on the left bank of Pângrai creek. There he built a cell of fir beams in a beautiful meadow where he stayed together with his disciples in permanent prayer, so that his place became known as “Simeon’s Hermitage.” Having heard of him, Right-believing Prince Stephan the Great (1457–1504) helped him raise a small wooden church dedicated to Great Martyr St. Demetrius the Myrrh-Gusher. When Metropolitan Teoctist I consecrated it, Venerable Simeon was ordained priest, becoming the founder and igumen of Pângrai Monastery, called “Simeon’s Skete” until 1508. There he gathered many disciples around him, growing in self-denial and prayer and receiving the gifts of healing and of prophecy. The faithful benefited from his blessings, as well as high officials, and even Right-believing Prince Stephan the Great, who used to ask for his advice for him and for the country. In 1476, when the Turks invaded Moldavia and won the battle of Rzboieni, Venerable Simeon prayed for the country and for the ruling prince to rid them of the invaders, and took his disciples to settle at Cava Monastery, in Mure region. There he passed away the same year in the autumn, being buried in that monastery. Towards the end of 1484, when peace was reigning again in the country, Right-believing Prince Stephan the Great placed his relics in a shrine and kept them in his treasury, in great honor. Then he took parts of the relics and placed them in a shrine for veneration, burying the rest of them in the Citadel of Suceava. On March 6, 2008 the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church canonized Venerable Simeon and Amphilochius , to be celebrated on September 7/20. Through the prayers of the venerable Saints Simeon and Amphilochius, Lord Jesus Christ our God have mercy on us. Amen. Troparion, tone 3: Oh, Venerable Fathers Simeon and Amphilochius, you who did enlighten the Carpathian woods through your prayers and filled the whole valley of Bistria with a spiritual aroma, close advisers of the ruling princes and radiant torches of the monastics and pious faithful, pray to God for us, who celebrate with love your holy commemoration. 20 сентября 2016 г. Berry told Breitbart News by phone that the allegation being made against Monk is “a court-martial offense in the military. Monk was disheartened by what he believes is a retaliatory and vindictive act by his commander.” Retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin is the executive vice president of the Family Research Council, which recently published a report on how troops’ religious liberty is being infringed upon under the Obama administration and is a leader of a new coalition, Restore Military Religious Freedom. On Monk’s situation, Gen. Boykin says: We now see what is happening to Christians under President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. This appears to be an intimidation tactic to send a message to other Christians in the military that you better not speak up when we violate your religious liberty. A statement to the media is not an official statement, so it’s absurd to consider charging him with this crime. The Obama-Hagel military leadership is not officially court-martialing Christians for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, but you will be punished and might even face a court martial if you stand by the principles of your Christian faith when you are serving in uniform. A court martial is a criminal prosecution in the military. Depending on the crime, punishments can range from reduction in rank and withholding pay to dishonorable discharge from the military or even imprisonment. Boykin said FRC and the coalition is collecting signatures for a petition to the secretary of the Air Force, calling upon him not to punish Sergeant Monk for refusing to compromise his Christian beliefs. Christian Converts In Iran Appeal 80 Lash Sentence For Taking Holy Communion      Three Iranian men who converted to Christianity to Islam are appealing against criminal convictions for drinking alcohol. Yasser Mossayebzadeh, Saheb Fadaie and Mohammad Reza Omidi were sentenced to 80 lashes for taking communion wine. Non-Muslims are allowed to drink alcohol in Iran. But because conversion to Christianity from Islam is forbidden and regarded as apostasy, the three men are still legally regarded as Muslims. The third man, Omidi, already has a previous conviction for drinking alcohol. If he is convicted a third time, he is likely to face the death sentence. World Watch Monitor reports that the three men have also been charged with acting against national security. Youcef Nadarkhani, the pastor who was in 2009 sentenced to death for apostasy in Iran but subsequently released after he was acquitted in 2012, was also arrested along with his wife Tina and charged with acting against national security. The three converts and Pastor Youcef face up to six years in jail for this offence, if convicted when all four next appear in the Revolutionary Court in Rasht on 15 October. Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani Since last year, Iranian authorities have already put more than 200 Christians behind bars. At least 43 Christians were arrested in August alone. Paul Robinson, chief executive of Release International, said: " Why should Christians be lashed for taking communion? And why is Iran refusing to allow its own citizens that most basic of all freedoms, the freedom to choose their own faith? These men have chosen to call themselves Christians. The state should respect that. " Middle East Concern " s Rob Duncan said: " The Iranian regime is conducting a very active campaign against house churches at the moment and leaders of house churches are harassed and put under pressure. " Middle East Concern is requesting prayers from Christians worldwide for the Iranian Christian converts. Iranian Christians at a church in Tehran. It would also be wonderful if the video could be watched with English subtitles. One comment on something which appeared in the article The Orthodox Church in Western Europe truly does offer a feeling of community to outsiders who come seeking " the right path " - this statement is so true: " My true return to the Church happened through a real community that had a half-year catechesis, communication between parishioners outside of services, and Bible studies. This played an important role because I saw the real Orthodoxy, where people did not just light candles, but lived real Eucharistic lives. They knew and loved each other, had meals together and studied the Scripture together. This, of course, impressed me. " © 1999-2015 Православие.Ru
