Orthodox Christians determine the date of Easter using the Julian calendar, this year it fell the week after the western church celebrated Easter. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is also called the Church of the Resurrection by Orthodox Christians, is believed to be the site of Jesus " crucifixion and his tomb. Senior Orthodox clergy emerge from the site of the tomb, with lit flames, which are then used to light the bundles of candles held by the many pilgrims who had gather for the ceremony. We must stand up for Middle East " s persecuted Christians/Православие.Ru We must stand up for Middle East " s persecuted Christians SOURCE: FoxNews.com By Johnnie Moore      Christianity began in the East, not the West, yet today Christians in the East are enduring an all-out-assault by Islamic terrorists, while Christians in the West live their lives largely oblivious to it all. This has to change. This is no imaginary persecution; in Syria alone there have been reports of kidnappings, Christian communities intentionally displaced by militants and, worst of all, shootings and beheadings of Christians who refused to convert to Islam. In Egypt radicals have recently destroyed dozens of churches, and the once vibrant Christian population in Iraq has been decimated. Christians in the West should stand up for those in the East out of regard for all they have given us over these thousands of years, if for no other reason. See, what most American Christians don’t realize is that the “Islamic World” was once the Christian world. Some of the most well-known and influential leaders in the early church hailed from North Africa and the Middle East – like the warring theologians Athanasius and Arius, and the apologist Tertullian. It was for the library in Alexandria that the preeminent Greek version of the Torah (the “Septuagint”) was commissioned. Today, St. Augustine would be called a Tunisian, Origen would be Egyptian and the Apostle Paul – who was on the road to Damascus when he encountered Christ – would have told the story of his conversion while heading to “Syria.” It was also in the Syrian city of “Antioch” that Christians were first called “Christians,” and to this day there are as many Christian holy sites in that nation as anywhere else in the world. When Jesus was born, and his life was threatened by the hysteria of King Herod, it was to Egypt that Joseph and Mary fled until Herod’s bloodlust subsided. If the famed Council of Nicaea were held today, the headline would read: “Christian theologians gather in Turkey to settle long-held dispute about Christ’s deity,” and the part of the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized could have very well flowed through modern-day Jordan , as opposed to Israel.

Archive Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada presides at the Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Russian Cathedral in New York City on the day of its patronal feast 20 December 2021 year 18:22 On Sunday, December 19, 2021, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, and at the invitation of His Grace Matthew Bishop of Sourozh and Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA & Canada, His Beatitude  Metropolitan Tikhon  presided at the Divine Liturgy at New York City’s Saint Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral on the day of the Cathedral’s patronal feast. Concelebrating with His Beatitude were Archpriest George Konyev, Chancellor of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Archpriest Alexander Golubov, Igumen Nikodim, Dean of the Cathedral and Secretary of the Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes of the USA, and Priest Alessandro Margheritino, Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America. Metropolitan Tikhon’s delegation included Deacon Peter Ilchuk, Executive Secretary to the Metropolitan. After the Divine Liturgy, Igumen Nikodim shared the greetings of Bishop Matthew who welcomed His Beatitude, and noted his regrets for not being able to participate in the celebration. Metropolitan Tikhon offered his greetings to both His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Bishop Matthew, thanking them for the opportunity to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on such beautiful and joyous day in which we honor the beloved Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. His Beatitude also thanked Father George and the Cathedral’s clergy for their hospitality and love. In his homily at the end of the Divine Liturgy , His Beatitude pointed out that, “In today’s Gospel, we read that the crowds gathered around the Lord Jesus Christ and ‘sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed them all.’ Perhaps, hearing this, we wish that we, too, could have seen Jesus with our eyes, touched him with our hands, and have received healing for the wounds of our bodies, our souls, our hearts. But of course, the Lord is always present to us, not just spiritually, in our inner being, but physically, through the saints.” Metropolitan Tikhon then remarked that, “Wherever there is sanctity, there is Jesus Christ. And in some cases, in accordance with God’s providence, the holiness of a person is so great that, even after his death, his body remains with us, visibly full of God’s healing grace, always making Christ’s power present in our lives. This is the case with Saint Nicholas.” At the conclusion of the liturgical celebration, His Beatitude and his delegation were welcomed to the parish hall to share a festal meal with the Cathedral’s community in honor of their patron saint. During the meal, Metropolitan Tikhon and Bishop Matthew were able to speak on the phone and exchange greetings of the feast. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill’s Condolences Over Mass Killing Of Christians In Libya His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia sent condolences to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and His Holiness Patriarch Tawadros II over the murder of over twenty Coptic Christians in Libya.      His Excellency Mr. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi President Arab Republic of Egypt Your Excellency, dear Mr. President, Please, accept my deep condolences over the atrocious murder of Coptic Christians, Egyptian citizens, in Libya. The crime committed by extremists deserves everyone’s condemnation. Radicals’ attempts to justify violence by religious motives provoke utter rejection. Following the path of terror, these devil’s servants try to disrupt the balance, maintained for centuries, of good neighborly relations between Christians and Muslims in the Middle East. I am convinced that the tragedy that has befallen the Egyptian people will leave nobody indifferent. A priority task of the whole world community today is to combine the efforts to oppose the inhuman ideology and give a resolute rebuff to this evil. Terrorism has no future, because people will never put up with violence, no matter what slogans it might use as a cover. I offer my condolences to the relatives and friends of those killed, I prayerfully empathize with all Egyptian people and wish them fortitude and spiritual strength in opposing extremism and terrorism. With respect and condolences, +KIRILL PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA His Holiness Theodoros II Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark in All Africa and the Middle East Your Holiness, With deep pain in my heart I have learnt about the terrible murder of over twenty Christians of your flock in Libya. No goal can justify this horrible crime. Using religious rhetoric as a cover, extremists commit atrocities unprecedented in their cruelty, seeking to sow panic in people’s hearts and to bring a split into the good relations between Christians and Muslims, which prevailed in the Middle East for centuries. It is my conviction that it is especially important today for the whole world community to unite and undertake most resolute actions to oppose extremism and terrorism. We as Christians should together bear witness to the Risen Lord Jesus Who has conquered evil and death. Then futile will be all attempts of those who serve the devil using the holy name of God to justify their criminal actions. In this grave hour, I stand in prayer with the Egyptian people. My sincere condolences go to your Holiness, the clergy and flock of the Coptic Church, and the relatives and love ones of those who were killed. May the Lord give rest to the souls of the deceased in the dwellings of the righteous. With love in Christ, + KIRILL PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA 20 февраля 2015 г.      In the context of today’s society, marked by secularization, uncertainty and a lack of mobilizing ideals, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, underlines the importance of the mission of the Church, which has to harmonize the word of preaching and catechesis with charity work, by practical helping, and an active and consolatory presence among the people. The Romanian Patriarch also highlighted the necessity of co-responsibility and co-operation of clergy and lay people in the dynamic mission of the Church. These can be supported today by modern means of communication – television, radio, social networks, written and online press – instruments by which the ministry of the Church can reach those who are not acquainted with or have forgotten the joy of communion in God’s love. Although today’s secularized society is more critical with the servants of the Church, asking that the Church help the society as much as possible, even if the secularized society, in its turn, does not help the Church, but often shows hostility to her, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel urges Orthodox clergy and believers to be faithful to Christ and His Church. His Beatitude notes that some of those who are troubled and disoriented today will change for the better, especially when they find spiritual peace and joy bestowed by Christ in the servants and the faithful of the Church. Facing the contemporary challenges related to the phenomena of secularization, migration and all types of violence which generate different feelings and attitudes for and against the Church, as servants of our Saviour Jesus Christ among men, we must mainly resort to spiritual patterns represented by the Holy Fathers of the Church and by the Romanian Spiritual Fathers, who went through many trials and tribulations, but, by prayer and patience, wisdom and hope, conveyed to us a dynamic missionary work and a peaceful, lively and luminous Romanian spirituality. The Romanian Orthodox Church said Thursday it is considering a Romanian monk persecuted by the communists and known as the " saint of Transylvania " for sainthood. The Metropolitan of Transylvania said Thursday it had begun the lengthy process of canonization for Arsenie Boca , a Romanian Orthodox monk and priest whose grave in western Romania attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims every year. The Romanian Orthodox church is autonomous and makes its own canonizations. Boca, who became a monk in 1940, fell afoul of communist authorities because of his support for the anti-communist resistance. The communists accused him of having sympathies for the allegedly pro-Nazi Legionnaire movement, something he denied. Boca, who enjoys broad support, is a key figure for Romania " s far-right groups, who critics say are pushing for his canonization. He was harassed by the Securitate secret police, detained and did forced labor on the Black Sea Canal, a notorious labor camp where tens of thousands of political prisoners worked in the 1950s. In 1959, he was banned from leading worship and the Prislop monastery, where he is now buried, was converted into a retirement home. He was forced to retire from the church in 1968 and spent 15 years painting religious images and icons in the small church of Draganescu in southern Romania. The church " s interiors are now considered among the most beautiful in the country. Boca died in 1989, a month before Romania " s anti-communist revolt. Some Orthodox priests have been criticized for collaborating with communist authorities. They argued they needed to have links with state authorities in order for the church to survive. More than 80 percent of Romanians are Orthodox believers. Edited by OrthoChristian.com 1 октября 2015 г. The organizer of the commemoration of the Russian soldiers of Suvorov is Protodeacon Georg Kobro. From the recollections of a local German, Johann Baptist Pflug, kept in the local town hall’s chronicles: “Russians had a great deal of respect for their dead… For each soldier they crafted a coffin from well-finished planks. A priest would sprinkle holy water on the grave. The dead were carried by their companions to the cemetery by hand, a half-hour-long journey. They filled the graves with their hands, watching that stones did not fall on the coffins, only soft clumps of earth, so that ‘light’ would be the foreign soil covering their graves. Leveling out the grave mound, the covered them with large stones. Over each grave they would erect a well-made cross…” The graves themselves have long vanished, the “Russian forest” having taken their place. There is evidence that in the early 19th century, a stone was erected in the “Russian forest” to mark the memory of the soldiers of Suvorov which was removed by the French in 1850. Today’s stone was erected on November 14, 1948, by Russian emigres who formerly served in the Tsarist Army. Russian emigres have not forgotten this part of Russian history. Russian scout groups would visit the stones, where divine services would be held.  Visitors to the site can also travel to the local Basilica of Weingarten to venerate the holy earth which came from under the Cross of Jesus Christ which contains His Blood, which was recovered by the repentant Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced Christ’s side.   Christians have venerated the Holy Blood of Jesus Christ at Weingarten’s Benedictine Monastery for over 900 years. According to historians, the centurion Longinus brought the Holy Blood of Christ to Mantua, which, after its division into several parts, was distributed to rulers of the epoch. russianorthodoxchurch.ws Другие публикации на портале: © 2007-2024 Портал Богослов.Ru. Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf HEALING HEALING. In reading the Psalms, the primary hymnbook of the Jewish and Christian church, one cannot but come away with the impression that sickness and death are humankind’s most avaricious natural enemies, while wholeness and life are God’s most precious blessings. In general, healing fits into this scheme, not as a supernatural action, but as the restoration of a human being to natural vitality. Healing overcomes the sickness and suffering of the fallen world and restores its pristine wholeness, and for this reason is both spiritual and physical. Theology put forward in Duet asserts that in God’s plan the good prosper and the wicked suffer. Popular interpreters of Duet, past and present, have drawn the further conclusion that if people suffer, with sickness for example, they must be wicked. Many societies since the time of Duet have engaged in the self-righteous and spurious occupation of postulating the wickedness of the sick, regardless of the actual contents of the book or the rules of logic. Such is the case with the first three friends of Job and with Jesus’ disciples who, when they met a man born blind, asked Jesus whether this man or his parents sinned so that he was born blind. Jesus’ response, that neither this man nor his parents sinned, denied the simple causality of sickness, sin (q.v.), and of inherited guilt. Healing in the Church is looked upon as a sacrament (q.v.) that imitates the many healings of Jesus, is commanded by Scripture (Jas 5:13f.), and involves both soul and body. Historically, healers were not set apart by ordination but were recognized by their fruits. Special recognition is given by the Church to unmercenary healers, a class of saints (q.v.), who perform this sacred function without demanding money. In 20th-c. parochial use this sacrament has been suppressed for various reasons: a misunderstanding of the character of healing, confusion with “last rites,” a misguided devotion to the full text of the sacrament (seven priests repeating seven sets of Gospel readings, prayers, etc.) without sensitivity to its function, etc. At present some theologians are working toward the reinstatement of healing to its rightful place in the life of the Church’s sacraments. “The Chancery work is not just bureaucratic work but must be seen as a real pastoral calling. It involves people and issues that go beyond simple administrative oversight. It requires a real and true connection between the work of the central administration and the dioceses, parishes and the people. Otherwise, it would be empty work. Instead it connects the whole together. But it is much deeper than that, it is an evangelistic endeavor. Our dearly beloved and recently reposed Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko wrote, ‘In many Orthodox Church and church institutions, Christ and his gospel serve merely as a pretext for a variety of religious, ecclesiastical, social, and political ideas and activities that have little, if anything to do with the Lord’s mission in the world. These ideas and activities may be old-fashioned or modern, spiritualistic or secular, relativistic or sectarian, political or pietistic. They may be sophisticated or simplistic, intellectual or popular, refined or vulgar. But whatever or however they are not rooted in Jesus Christ. Nor are they guided and guarded by the Gospel image and teaching of and about Jesus and God the Father; nor are they informed by the Holy Spirit Who is always and everywhere the Spirit of God.’ May we never fall into that trap but rather ensure that all our labors are done in the light of Christ.” 22 июля 2015 г.
