Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk speaks at global Christian youth forum in Manila 10 August 2019 year 11:23 On 8th – 10th August 2019, the Jesus Global Youth Day took place at the Mall of Asia Arena in the city of Manila, the Philippines, bringing together over thirty thousand participants from more than 100 countries.  With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, attended the forum. On 9th August, Metropolitan Hilarion addressed the audience of 30 thousand young people, speaking about the importance of the personality of the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of a Christian. The DECR chairman also told the young people from various continents who gathered together in Manila about the Orthodox faith, the Russian Orthodox Church and its history in the 20th century, making a special emphasis on the revival of church life in the recent thirty years. “Such upturn in religious life in the territory of the former atheistic empire cannot be caused by natural or socio-political factors alone, but clearly is of supernatural character. This revival does not spring from our human efforts. Its main reason is the personality of our Lord Jesus Christ – God Incarnate and Saviour of the world,” the DECR chairman said. Among those present at the meeting were Mr. Teodoro Locsin, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Philippines; Mr. Igor Khovayev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of the Philippines; Metropolitan Sergy of Singapore and Southeast Asia, Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia; Metropolitan Pavel of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, acting administrator of the diocese of the Philippines and Vietnam; Mr. K. Таким образом, описание снятия Иисуса Христа с Креста и погребения в Евангелии полностью согласуется с данными археологии и предписаниями иудейского закона.   Andrea M. Berlin. Martin Hengel. The Lord of creation, the one who walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden, the one who raised Lazarus from the dead, the one died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again three days later calls to us. The bridegroom calls out to his church and to the world this morning, simply asking, “Who do you say that I am?” Amen. Virginmartyr Apollinaria of Egypt Commemorated on January 5 Saint Apollinaria was a daughter of Anthemias, a former proconsul of the Byzantine Empire during the minority of Theodosius the Younger (408-450). Disdaining marriage, she requested her parents’ permission to make a pilgrimage to the holy places of the East. Arriving in Alexandria from Jerusalem, she slipped away from her servants and changed into monastic garb. She hid in a marsh, where she practised asceticism for several years in strict fasting and prayer. An angel appeared to her in a dream and told her to go to the monastery of Sketis, which was under the spiritual direction of Saint Macarius of Egypt (January 19), and to call herself Dorotheus. Saint Macarius accepted her as one of the brethren, and she quickly distinguished herself by her ascetical life. Saint Apollinaria’s parents had another daughter who was possessed by demons. They sent her to Sketis to Saint Macarius, who brought the afflicted girl to Dorotheus (Apollinaria). By her prayers, the maiden received healing. After she returned home, the maiden was attacked by a violent demon, who made her appear pregnant. The demon spoke through the girl’s lips, saying that Dorotheus had forced himself on her. Her outraged parents sent soldiers to the monastery to find the one who had defiled their daughter. Saint Apollinaria took the blame and accompanied the envoys to the home of her parents. There she revealed her secret to her parents, healed her sister, and returned to Sketis. She died shortly thereafter in the year 470. Only after the death of Dorotheus was it revealed that “he” was actually a woman. The saint was buried in a cave in the monastery church of Saint Macarius of Egypt. Interesting note: in American Orthodoxy, we use the Menaia published by Sophia Press, a Byzantine Catholic publisher (we surmise because the Orthodox either cannot or will not spend monies to publish these readings)! Their bias is all too clear inserted into the Vesper and Matins Irmoi: the two brothers corrected the error of the Moslems (!!) - nowhere mentioned is the problem with the " german " Latin Bishops who imprisoned and tortured St Methodios! We celebrate the two Sts Kyril and Methodios as our patrons in our own outreach to those in the Latin-western errors who live among us and name the name of the Lord Jesus Christ while knowing so little about Him! Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us in His Parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:29-37) who we should regard as our neighbor: the one who needs help, even if he or she has another views, confesses another faith or lives in another place. Such was the man, who had suffered at the hands of robbers, for the Good Samaritan. I ask you to respond to Christ’s appeal and help our neighbours, who are now in particular need of support and sympathy. For this purpose, I give my blessing to organize a fund-raising on the next Sunday in all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church to help the needy in Syria. Money should be transferred to accounts of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service which is charged to coordinate this good initiative. The money collected will be transferred to the Patriarchate of Antioch. I am praying for the end of bloodshed and for peace in the land of Syria. I hope that our offerings will be pleasing to God. +Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Реквизиты Синодального отдела по церковной благотворительности Православная религиозная организация Отдел по церковной благотворительности и социальному служению Русской Православной Церкви (Московского Патриархата) Адрес: 109004, г. A handwritten letter of St. Seraphim to Archimandrite Anthony      In 2006, a photographic copy of a manuscript was published containing spiritual counsels written by the hand of St. Seraphim of Sarov († 1833) to the then young Hieromonk Anthony (1792-1877), who regularly visited and sought advice from the Saint. In 1831, St. Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow, chose Father Anthony as his spiritual Father and appointed him Rector of the Holy Trinity Lavra near Moscow (the Metropolitan was then Abbot of the Monastery). Father Anthony, as Archimandrite, worthily served the renowned Lavra, and Russian monasticism more generally, for more than forty years, until his saintly repose. It seems that the original text was found among the personal archives of Father Anthony at the Lavra. We do not have further information regarding either the original or the photographic copy; nevertheless, the Grace-filled spiritual admonitions of the text are wholly consistent with the well-known “Brief Teachings” of St. Seraphim.      A copy of the original handwritten letter and an English translation of the text follow. Father Seraphim: words written by his own hand. 1. Learn noetic prayer of the heart as the Holy Fathers teach it in the Philokalia; for the Jesus Prayer is a light on our path and a star leading us to Heaven. 2. Learn to practice the Jesus Prayer while breathing in through your nose, with your lips shut; this technique is a scourge against the flesh and carnal desires. 3. Add “through the Theotokos have mercy on me” to the usual Jesus Prayer. 4. Outer prayer alone does not suffice, for God is attentive to the mind. Thus, monks who do not unite outer prayer with inner prayer are not monks, but little black heads. 5. Fear like the fire of Gehenna those painted ravens [women]; for they often transform soldiers of the King into servants of Satan. 6. Keep in mind that the true mantiya of a monk is patient endurance of slander and disparagement with joy; where there are no sorrows, neither is there salvation. 7. Do everything gradually, calmly, and not at once. Virtue is not a pear; it is not devoured in one bite. St. Elisabeth Convent 17 января 2017 г.
