When you wish to offer to God the sacrifice of love, do not offer it self-willfully, from a thoughtless impulse; offer it with humility, in that time and that place which the Lord commanded

Brief Spiritual Instructions: From the Notes of Archbishop Seraphim’s Spiritual Children “The Lord is near; if you call upon Him, He will respond immediately.” These words belong to Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev, 1881-1950), a remarkable hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, for whom living communion with God was the ultimate meaning and center of all of life. This Archpastor was renowned not only for the strength of his prayers, but also for his labors in defense of Orthodoxy. We offer our readers short spiritual instructions from this Holy Hierarch, collected by his spiritual children. Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev) On Love and Obedience  Love for God consists in the fulfillment of His commandments. One should look upon one’s brother as an Angel, and upon his sin as an illness. One needs to separate man from his sins. We should hate sin, but love and pity man. Vladyka Seraphim said of himself: “Nothing upsets me as much as upsetting words said to a neighbor, even when it is necessary.” I strive to think almost not at all about myself. Strive to do this, too. You will find genuine love when you cast aside self-love. Hear people out, but about oneself (one’s sicknesses and sorrows) do not speak! Obedience is true love. Obedience is the source of life and blessedness, while disobedience is the source of death and unhappiness. Genuine obedience makes the obedient one like unto a burning bush. Obedience does not burn in fire, does not drown in water, and raises one from earth to Heaven. But disobedience sinks in water, burns in fire, and casts one from earth to Hades. Obedience is Paradise, but disobedience is Hades. For obedience God sends abundant joy. Obedience is love, but disobedience is non-love, it is the trampling upon love. Never decline from obedience. In disobedience is hidden pride. In humility is hidden love. In pride there is no love. All your unhappiness comes from your pride. On Humility  Nothing can help us be saved, apart from humility. We humble ourselves before our neighbors when we do not judge them. Prepare for monasticism through meekness and humility.

Churches discuss problem of shrinking Christian population in Middle East. Housing recommended Jerusalem (Nov. 1) Only days after a special Vatican Synod on the Middle East ended a week of deliberation about the rapidly shrinking Christian communities in the Arab world and Israel, Christians faced a massacre in Baghdad and renewed troubles in Jerusalem. Fifty-eight people including a priest were reported dead Sunday after Iraqi troops stormed the Catholic Sayidat al-Najat church in Baghdad where gunmen linked with al-Qaida had taken dozens of hostages and begun killing them. It was just the latest bout of the anti-Christian violence that has sparked a massive wave of emigration from the troubled country in recent years. In Jerusalem, it remained unclear what caused a blaze early Friday morning that swept through the Alliance Church on Prophets Street, next door to the Jewish ultra-orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim. The use of the church by evangelical and Jewish messianic groups aroused suspicions that the fire could have been started deliberately, but Jerusalem police said their initial investigation did not appear to suggest arson. Decades of discrimination, poverty and occasional violence have taken their toll on the Christians of the Middle East. Tens of thousands have left the region in recent years. Reversing the decline of the rapidly shrinking Christian communities in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and the Holy Land were high on the agenda of last week's Vatican Synod. While the problem of violence in Iraq and elsewhere seems intractable for many Christians, in the Holy Land, church officials have hit on a novel solution: real estate. Churches in Jerusalem and the West Bank, alarmed by the rapid rate of Christian emigration and the creeping loss of some church-owned land to Palestinian gangsters, have initiated a major building program to provide affordable housing to Christian families. A 2006 survey carried out by Sabeel, a Christian think-tank in Jerusalem, showed that the 2005 Christian population of 160,000 in Israel and the West Bank had barely grown since 1945 due to massive emigration caused by continuous warfare, occupation and discrimination. More Palestinian Christians now live in Chile than in the Holy Land, where Christians account for less than 2 percent of the population. In cities like Bethlehem and Ramallah, which a generation ago had Christian majorities, they are now outnumbered by Muslims.

Tweet Нравится St. Tikhon " s Orthodox Monastery adds specialty coffee roastery to bookstore Source: The Scranton Times-Tribune South Canaan, November 28, 2016 Daniel Armstrong, a monk at St. Tikhon " s Monastery, prepares a French press as he makes coffee inside the bookstore at 175 St. Tikhons Road in Waymart. The monastery recently opened Burning Bush Coffee Roasting, where they prepare and package coffee beans from around the world. Michael J. Mullen/Staff Photographer Faintly at first, a crackling sound leaks from the roasting drum as green coffee beans turn a light amber color behind a small, round window. Father Innocent Neal, a Russian Orthodox priest who looks the part with a full brown beard and gentle eyes, draws a short, narrow scoop from the churning drum and inhales, seeking sensory milestones from the beans. Wet grass, then hay, then bread, he explains, are the scent stages that lead to a perfect roast. The beans in the metal scoop smell more like wet grass, so he slides it back in place to continue roasting. The clergy at St. Tikhon’s Bookstore, the nation’s largest Orthodox bookstore, and printing press, started Burning Bush Coffee Roasters in January. Since then, the monks embraced roasting and became experts. The name Burning Bush Coffee Roasters derives meaning from the Old Testament story of Moses and the burning bush that Christianity says signaled the eventual holy conception in Mary — both perfect vessels unconsumed by the fire inside them. Father Innocent, who like other Orthodox clergy prefers to be called by first name only, manages the bookstore. A longtime coffee aficionado, he roasted coffee in small batches long before considering it could supplement the bookstore sales — a business to support the ministry of 12 monks who live and work at the Monastery of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk and teach at the affiliated St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary across the street. Founded in 1905, St. Tikhon’s is the country’s oldest Orthodox monastery.

A Slavonic Translation of the Eucharistic Diataxis of Philotheos Kokkinos from a Lost Manuscript (Athos Agiou Pavlou 149) Источник The library of the hagioritic monastery of St. Paul (ερ μον γου Παλου) was once famous for its Slavonic collection, one of the most interesting on the Holy Mountain. Tragically, this collection was destroyed by a fire in 1902. Some of the manuscripts from this collection happened to have been sold by the monks or given as a gift to this or that visitor 1 , or transferred to other hagioritic monasteries. But most of the Slavonic manuscript treasures formerly belonging to the monastery were completely lost. Scholars are left to depend on a few short descriptions by 19 th -century travellers to Mount Athos: Bishop Porphyry Uspensky 2 , Archimandrites Antonin Kapustin 3 and Leonid Kavelin 4 , Viktor Grigorovich 5 . This is why a list from dossier No. 138 from the archive of Alexey Dmitrievsky († 1929), kept at the Russian National Library in Saint-Petersburg (archive fund No. 253), looks so promising. There is mentioned a number of Slavonic manuscripts from the monastery of St. Paul. The list was published by Miguel Arranz 6 , who has also briefly studied another dossier from Dmitrievsky’s archive, the huge No. 137, consisting of many copies from various Greek and Slavonic manuscripts (actually, an unedited continuation of Dmitrievsky’s famous «Описание литургических рукописей...»), and concluded: «Une premiere vision nous a laisse l’impression qu’il s’agit des memes documents indiques dans l’index... qui se trouve dans le dossier n. 138» 7 . In reality, though, it turned out that the cited conclusion is incorrect – actual contents of No. 137 differ considerably from the list given in No. 138. In particular, one finds here excerpts from just two Slavonic manuscripts from the collection of the monastery of St. Paul. The present article is an edition of the first of them, written out from a 15 th -c. Sluzhebnik (Leitourgikon), Athos Agiou Pavlou 149.

Tweet Нравится Holy Fire to come to Russia at Pascha Moscow, January 31, 2017 Photo: http://media1.s-nbcnews.com/      By the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, the Holy Fire will be brought from Jerusalem to Moscow at Pascha again this year, the St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation reported to RIA-Novosti . The Holy Fire is a miracle occurring every year on Holy Saturday in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, when the Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem enters the tomb of the Lord. After a period of praying, the miraculous fire descends from Heaven and lights the patriarch’s candles before rushing throughout the church. Since 2003 the Holy Fire has then been taken to various countries as part of the St. Andrew’s Foundation’s “ Pray for Peace for Jerusalem ” program, in which Orthodox believers from Russia, Israel, Serbia, Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, the USA, and other nations have joined the foundation’s delegates and the patriarch of Jerusalem to pray for peace in the Holy City. The Holy Fire is traditionally brought to the Paschal service at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow and from there throughout Russia. In 2015 the fire was taken to fifty-three Russian and eleven international cities. Patriarch Theophilos again blessed the “Pray for Peace for Jerusalem” program for this year, noting that he expects the reconstruction work being carried out on the edicule over the Lord’s tomb to be done two weeks before the celebration of Pascha, which falls on April 16 this year. 31 января 2017 г. Ancient icons miraculously survive in burned Syrian church/Православие.Ru Ancient icons miraculously survive in burned Syrian church Homs, May 11, 2014 In the Syrian Old Homs, " Eleven Christian churches are either completely destroyed or heavily damaged, " related a local priest named George Abu Zahem to the Lebanese The Daily Star newspaper. He has described the situation in the al-Hamidiyah Christian quarter as disastrous. According to the priest, the churches were robbed and desecrated by militants. " A true miracle happened at Holy Martyr Elian's Orthodox Church in Homs (6th century). The gunmen set it on fire. However, the fire did not touch the ancient icons on the walls—they just slightly darkened, " the priest said. The thick walls have saved the Cathedral of Holy Theotokos, the " calling card " of Old Homs, where is the city's main relic—a small portion of the Girdle of the Mother of God. According to Abu Zahem, the bell-tower was damaged as a result of fighting: its bell collapsed in the cathedral's courtyard. 12 мая 2014 г. Tweet Нравится Relics of St. Tikhon to visit U.S. parishes for centenary of Russian revolution Moscow, February 22, 2017 Photo: Official website of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia      A piece of the relics of Patriarch St. Tikhon of Moscow will be brought to America this year, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 1917 reestablishment of the patriarchate in Russia and of the atheist communist revolution in Russia, which also occurred in 1917 under the reign of the newly-enthroned St. Tikhon. At its February 21 meeting, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia resolved to establish a committee for planning the visit of the relics to various parishes throughout the US, reports the ROCOR press service . To bring St. Tikhon’s relics was first proposed by the St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation . The fund has several projects, the most well-known and longest running being the “Pray for Peace of Jerusalem” program which brings the Holy Fire throughout the world on Pascha. The reliquary will visit parishes both of the Russian Church Abroad and of other jurisdictions in America. A detailed schedule is forthcoming. At the same meeting, the Holy Synod blessed the transfer of a piece of the relics of St. Elizabeth the New Martyr from Jerusalem to Russia, also in honor of the centenary of the Russian revolution, which led to St. Elizabeth’s martyrdom. Her relics lie in the Martha and Mary Convent in Jerusalem, under the jurisdiction of ROCOR’s Spiritual Mission. A reliquary containing relics of the New Martyrs and Confessors is to be created for the centenary, to be used in consecrating antimensia and altars in parishes which do not yet have relics of the New Martyrs of the twentieth century. 22 февраля 2017 г.
