The joy of the resurrected Savior is appointed for every man on earth, but not all know about it and not all understand how to join in this common exaltation. They had all proved on themselves this [unburning] characteristic of the Holy Fire. The skeptics try to collect statements of people who maintain that the fire burned or scorched them. It is possible that this really happened; the whole point is in how much time has passed after its descent. Just as the form or appearance of its descent and the duration of the wait for it is not the same in various years, so also varies the length of time the Fire preserves this miraculous property. The just-quoted Archimandrite Raphael Karelin writes: “When I, after a certain amount of time, perhaps five minutes, decided to repeat [holding it to my face], I felt something different—by this time, the fire burns.” Sister Elizabeth of the monastery at Gethsemane says 15 minutes passed, and the Fire still did not burn. There is no contradiction here. If one doesn’t purposely look at a watch, the perception of time can be very subjective. The important thing is the often-testified-to, objective fact that it doesn’t burn. When the skeptics gather “witnesses” in order to cast doubt on this miraculous quality of the Holy Fire, they once again display incompetence in basic methods of scholarly and scientific research. In genuine scholarly and scientific work, conclusions are based on solidly established, confirmatory evidence. The presence of negative, opposing pieces of evidence induces one only to investigate (as far as it is possible) the causes of their manifestation. Unbelief and skepticism are barren, infertile. “As someone withdrawing from the light does not in the least do harm to the light, but does very great harm to himself, becoming immersed in darkness, so also one accustomed to scorning the power of the Almighty does not in the least do harm to it [His power], but upon himself brings extreme harm” (John Chrysostom). 23 апреля 2011 г. Sifton, Manitoba " s historic church destroyed by fire/Православие.Ru Sifton, Manitoba " s historic church destroyed by fire Sifton, MB, Canada, Sept. 11, 2010 - [OCA] On Wednesday night, September 8, 2010, the hamlet of Sifton lost one of its landmarks as Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church burned completely to the ground. The church, built some 100 years ago in the " Lemko " style common to what is today southeastern Poland, had been restored completely several years ago and had been declared a heritage site. According to local residents, flames were first spotted at about 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night. Firefighters were unable to extinguish the rapidly spreading fire. By 1:00 a.m. Thursday, only the smouldering basement remained. It is unknown what or who started the fire, although the recent increase in vandalism and thefts in the area has led some locals to suspect arson. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have initiated an investigation. There was no insurance on the building due to a lack of funds. A number of historic artifacts, including books, were destroyed. " The Sifton church had been restored and renovated recently, with some financial assistance from the Archdiocese and elsewhere, " said His Eminence, Archbishop Seraphim of Ottawa and Canada. " It had become a stopping-point in northern Manitoba, and it had established a registered Quiet Garden. The loss has many aspects beyond historical, emotional and sentimental ones. I hope we learn a lesson. " At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, Sifton was an important center of religious activity for the Orthodox mission in Canada. Located near the church was Holy Ascension Monastery, Orphanage, and Pastoral School, established in part due through the efforts of Archbishop Arseny [Chahovtsov]. The monastery and parish served many pioneering immigrants from Ukraine and elsewhere for several decades. The monastery existed into the 1960s, when the depopulation of rural areas began to significantly affect the Sifton region.

Stone of Scone and Coronation Chair at Westminster Abbey (engraving of the nineteenth century)      St. Fergus is venerated as the heavenly patron of Glamis and of the town of Wick in Highland, one of the northernmost towns of Scotland, where the holy bishop founded a church or a monastery. In Aberdeenshire there is a village called St. Fergus where this saint most probably preached. Finally, the village of Halkirk on River Thurso (Highland) is linked to our saint who built a church there. In ancient times there existed a cathedral in Halkirk, which in the thirteenth century was transferred to Dornoch. Today there is a ruined Halkirk Kirk in the village, which once was used as a chapel of the bishop’s palace. Its patron-saint was either St. Fergus or St. Catherine. Ukrainian army shelling Iveron Convent in Donetsk Donetsk, October 19, 2014 The Convent of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God in Donetsk is being continuously shelled. It is situated near the airport where there is an ongoing fighting in spite of the truce declared not long ago, reports the Zvezda (“ The Star ”) TV channel.      There is only one inaccuracy in the TV story of Zvezda : the Wonder-Working Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the main shrine of the convent, painted on Holy Mount Athos at the request and with the blessing of the famous elder Schema-Archimandrite Zosima (Sokur; 1944-2002), has left the convent. The icon is temporarily staying in Larinka village, the convent informs. From the feast of the Protection to October 26, the feast of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the convent sisters and parishioners will be praying hard so that the Holy Theotokos might reveal Her will as to where this holy icon should be kept afterwards. One of the volunteer corps members who currently guards the church has reported that the convent is regularly shelled from the airport side. “Every day they fire at us, lay mines and other ammunition,” the self-defense forces representative related. The church is in half-ruined state. Shells shatter windows, damage walls, icons are hit by shrapnel. About the main shrine of the convent Through the efforts of late elder Zosima (Sokur) a request was made to paint a copy of the Wonder-Working Iveron Icon of the Mother of God on Holy Mount Athos, reports Donbass Pravoslavny . The copy of the wonder-working icon was painted by Monk Yannis from the Russian St. Panteleimon’s Monastery on Mt. Athos with observance of all the canons of icon-painting (fasting, prayer, pouring of holy water over the icon board, mixing the colors with holy water, celebration of Liturgies). Miracles and healings from this copy of the wonder-working icon have been witnessed. With the joint efforts of generous donors and those people whose prayer requests to Holy Theotokos were fulfilled, the icon was adorned with golden crowns (garlands). After the cross procession the icon was installed at the Holy Iveron Convent. 21 октября 2014 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Investigators in Israel do not know who set fire to Absalom " s Tomb in the Kidron Valley, opposite the Temple Mount, and the adjacent Tomb of Jehoshephat. The tombs, which date to the Second Temple period, are among a cluster of ancient graves at the base of the Mount of Olives. Absalom " s Tomb is traditionally identified as a monument to the biblical figure of the same name, though archaeologists have dated the edifice to the 1st century BC. According to the Times of Israel , the fires broke out around 4:15 pm on Friday and caused extensive damage to the 2,000-year-old structures. Assaf Avraham, the Israel Park " s Authority administrator in charge of the national park surrounding the Old City " s walls, said in a statement that the blazes " caused damage to values of [historic] heritage and archaeological gems of great value. The relics of holy Hieromartyr Athanasius have been translated several times. The Monastery of St. Simeon suffered a fire in 1815; the relics were found to be intact and reinterred beneath the altar when the church was rebuilt, eventually moved into the sarcophagus so the parishioners could pray over the relics. In 1893, the relics were transferred to the church named in the hieromartyr’s honor in Grodno; and some of the relics were subsequently moved to an Orthodox convent in the bordering province of Lublin; when the nuns were relocated first to Siberia and then to Paris, the relics of St. Athanasius went with them, before being restored to Lublin in 1996. The courage, the steadfastness in the faith, and the love for the persecuted by which the holy monk lived his life are virtues for which all Orthodox Christians should strive; and St. Athanasius of Brest-Litovsk remains a beloved source of inspiration for Russian and Polish Orthodox Christians alike.
