Hieromartyr Capiton of Cherson Commemorated on March 7      The Hieromartyrs Capiton, Eugene, Basil, Ephraim, Elpidius, Agathodorus and Aetherius carried the Gospel of Christ into the North Black Sea region from the Danube to the Dniepr, including the Crimea. They were bishops of Cherson at different times during the fourth century, and they sealed their apostolic activity with martyrdom. Only Aetherius died in peace. The holy emperor Constantine sent Bishop Capiton to Cherson to replace Saint Aetherius. The Christians met him with joy, but the pagans demanded a sign from the new bishop, so they might believe in the God Whom he preached. Placing all his hope on the Lord, Saint Capiton put on his omophorion and went into a burning furnace. He prayed in the fire for about an hour, and emerged from it unharmed. “Shall anyone bind fire in his bosom, and not burn his garments?” Solomon asks (Prov. 6:27). Saint Capiton carried red-hot coals in his phelonion, yet neither his body nor his garments were scorched. Many of the unbelievers were then persuaded in the power of the Christian God. This miracle and the great faith of Saint Capiton were reported to Saint Constantine and the holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council (325), and they all glorified God. After several years Saint Capiton journeyed to Constantinople on business, but the ship encountered a storm at the mouth of the Dniepr River. The local people (pagans) seized the ship and drowned all those on board, including Saint Capiton. Although this occurred on December 21, Saint Capiton is commemorated with the other hieromartyrs of Cherson on March 7. Troparion — Tone 5 Since You have given us the miracles of Your Holy Hieromartyrs of Cherson as an invincible rampart,/foil the machinations of the ungodly, O Christ our God,/and strengthen the faith of the Orthodox Christians,/for You are good and love mankind. Kontakion — Tone 2 The radiant day of the hierarchs and pastors in Cherson has dawned!/Let us sing hymns for the feast of those who suffered for the sheep of Christ!/Hieromartyrs, entreat Christ, the chief Shepherd, that He may number us with the sheep on His right hand,/so that we may cry aloud to you:/Rejoice, holy fathers, for you shed your blood for Christ! Jerusalem clerics slam " brutal " police acts at Easter/Православие.Ru Jerusalem clerics slam " brutal " police acts at Easter Jerusalem, May 12, 2013 Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Metropolitan Theophilos (C) leads Easter service in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem " s Old City May 5, 2013. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun The heads of Jerusalem " s Orthodox churches on Sunday spoke out against the " brutal treatment " meted out by Israeli police to both priests and pilgrims during an ancient Easter ritual in the Old City. The incident occurred during the centuries-old sacred Holy Fire rite which takes place the day before Easter in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with police allegedly hitting a priest and several Egyptian diplomats. It sparked a diplomatic incident with Cairo which promptly summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest, with Israel " s deputy foreign minister confirming he had apologised. " We, the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, watched with sorrowful hearts the horrific scenes of the brutal treatment of our clergy, people, and pilgrims in the Old City of Jerusalem during Holy Saturday, " said a statement from the Orthodox patriarchs and church leaders. " A day of joy and celebration was turned to great sorrow and pain for some of our faithful because they were ill-treated by some Israeli policemen who were present around the gates of the Old City and passages that lead to the Holy Sepulchre. " Footage posted on the Internet showed police manhandling a Coptic priest, with one officer locking the priest " s head in his arm. Police said they had opened an investigation. Although the church leaders acknowledged the need for police to keep order among the thousands of pilgrims and visitors who flock to the annual ceremony, they accused police of " indiscriminately and brutally " beating people. " It is not acceptable that under pretext of security and order, our clergy and people are indiscriminately and brutally beaten, and prevented from entering their churches, monasteries and convents. " The statement called on the Israeli police and the interior ministry " to seriously consider our complaints, to hold responsibility and to condemn all acts of violence against our faithful and the clergy who were ill-treated by the police. " Among the signatories were Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Fuad Twal, as well as the leaders of all the other Orthodox churches in Jerusalem. Martyred Brothers in Cappadocia Commemorated on January 16      The Holy Martyrs Speusippus, Eleusippus, Meleusippus, and their grandmother Leonilla together with Neon, Turbo and Jonilla suffered in Gaul (by another account, in Cappadocia) in the second century, during the persecution under Marcus Aurelius (161-180). Leonilla received Baptism in her old age from one of the disciples of Saint Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, and she afterwards converted her three grandsons (who were triplets) to Christ. The brothers, in their zeal for the Lord, pulled down idols and reproached the pagans for their folly. The judge ordered Leonilla to go to the prison and tell her grandchildren to renounce Christ and worship the idols. Instead, she praised them for their bravery and their firm confession of faith. All three were hanged on a tree, then flogged. Finally, the martyrs were thrown into a fire, but their bodies were undamaged by the flames. After the torture and death of her grandchildren, Saint Leonilla was beheaded with a sword. Saint Jonilla also suffered with her. She saw the steadfast faith of the holy martyrs and said that she too was a Christian. The torturers hung her up by the hair, lacerated her body, then beheaded her. She left behind her husband and young son. Saint Neon witnessed the exploits of the holy brothers, and wrote an account of their sufferings. He gave his manuscript to Turbo, and openly confessed himself a Christian, for which he was fiercely beaten and died from his beating. Saint Turbo, after he copied out the exploits of the passion-bearers, also ended his life by martyrdom. These martyrs are particularly revered in Spain, where many churches are dedicated to them. The relics of the holy martyrs were given by the Byzantine emperor Zeno to a French nobleman from the city of Langres, where they now rest. If it was for this that my countrymen were punished, I also desire to share in their lot!” answered the courageous prince. Tsotne’s chivalrous deed made a dramatic impression on the Mongols, and every one of the prisoners was set free. Tsotne Dadiani is not mentioned in accounts of the next conspiracy against the Mongols, in the year 1259. Historians believe that he had already reposed by that time. The virtues of St. Tsotne Dadiani are known to all throughout Georgia. His heroism and integrity are an example of faith, love and devotion to every generation, and the faithful of every era have honored his holy name. Tsotne Dadiani was numbered among the saints on October 26, 1999, according to a decree of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Thou didst lay down thy life and confess the Lord’s commandment, being made perfect by the Lord. O good Saint Tsotne Dadiani, pray to God for us! Orthodox church vandalised in Istanbul/Православие.Ru Orthodox church vandalised in Istanbul Istanbul, March 26, 2014      A group of young thugs, apparently from the pro-Kurdish Peoples " Democratic Party (HDP), vandalised an Orthodox Christian church in Istanbul. Although informed of the incident, the police refused to intervene. The desecration took place last Sunday. The church, Agia Paraskevi, is located in Kazlçeme, just outside Constantinople " s ancient Byzantine walls. The church is famous for its source of water, deemed holy according to Eastern Byzantine tradition. Church custodian Athanasios Ozkaremihologlu said that a bunch of young men forced their way through the building " s front door. After causing mayhem, they took several sacred objects and the bell of the historic church. Eventually, he sought refuge at a nearby police station. However, the agents on duty at the time refused to intervene, saying that such action would make matters worse. The regrettable act of vandalism took place a week before next Sunday " s local elections, during celebrations marking Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, which falls on the first day of spring, and is widely celebrated across the region. Before leaving the holy place, the vandals left two HDP flags. The party has many Kurdish members. For some observers, incidents like this one are nothing new. Acts of provocation are commonplace at election time. In fact, Turkish voters are getting ready to cast their ballots next Sunday, a vote that will determine the fate of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has ruled the country since 2002. When informed of the incident, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I expressed his regrets and indignation, calling on law enforcement agencies to shed light on what happened. 27 марта 2014 г. The early patristic writers, putting them together, came up with an enumeration of five different ranks. Dionysius the Areopagite added to that list of five the separate ranks of Angel, Archangel, Seraph, and Cherubim, and thus set out the definitive list of the “Nine Orders” of the angels which would form the basic understanding of both the Latin and Eastern churches ever after (in ascending order: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Powers, Virtues, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim). The Seraphim occupied the seventh heaven alongside God, and their proximity to the Divine Presence resulted in their eruption into pure fire (in such a way are they always depicted in iconography). The Cherubim were the living throne of God (a prayer recalling this is said by the priest as he moves to the high place during the divine liturgy in the course of the singing of the Trisagion hymn). The angels were seen to be endowed with almost infinite mobility and vast powers. From the Byzan- tine-era liturgy onwards, the deacons often assumed a role of symbolizing the angelic orders attendant on the liturgy, and the imperial eunuchs (sexless, as Jesus had said the angels were in heaven: Mk. 12.25 ) had the special task of singing the Cherubic hymn at the time of the Great Entrance: “We who in a mystery represent the Cherubim, and sing the thrice holy hymn to the life- creating trinity, now lay aside all earthly cares, that we may receive the King of all who comes escorted by the ranks of unseen angels.” Devotion to the angels in the Orthodox Church has always been strong, and continues to this day as a marked aspect of normal Christian life. They are referred to as the “Bodiless Powers,” and several feasts in the course of the year are dedicated to them, especially to Michael and Gabriel, known as the Taxiarchs (leader of heavenly hosts). Ordinary Mondays in the Orthodox week are dedicated to them. The Sticheron for Vespers dedicated to the bodiless powers reads as follows: “Most radiant attendants of the triune Godhead; you angels who serve as supreme commanders, with all the powers on high you cry out rejoicing – Holy are you O Co-Eternal Word; Holy are you the Holy Spirit; one glory, one kingdom, one nature, one Godhead and power.” SEE ALSO: Cherubikon; Communion of Saints; Divine Liturgy, Orthodox REFERENCES AND SUGGESTED READINGS Danielou, J. Venerable Hilarion the New the Abbot of Pelecete Commemorated on March 28 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru Saint Hilarion the New, Igumen of Peleke Monastery, from his youth, he devoted himself to the service of God and spent many years as a hermit. Because of his holy and blameless life he was ordained to the holy priesthood, and later he was made igumen of the Pelekete monastery (near the Dardanelles). Saint Hilarion was granted gifts of clairvoyance and wonderworking by the Lord. Through prayer he brought down rain during a drought, and like the Prophet Elisha he separated the waters of a river, he drove harmful beasts from the fields, he filled the nets of fishermen when they had no success in fishing, and he did many other miracles. In addition to these things, he was able to heal the sick and cast out demons. Saint Hilarion suffered on Great and Holy Thursday in the year 754, when the military commnander Lakhanodrakon suddenly descended upon the Pelekete monastery in pursuit of icon-venerators, boldly forcing his way into the church, disrupting the service and throwing the Holy Gifts upon the ground. Forty-two monks were arrested, slapped into chains, sent to the Edessa district and murdered. The remaining monks were horribly mutilated, they beat them, they burned their beards with fire, they smeared their faces with tar and cut off the noses of some of the confessors. Saint Hilarion died for the veneration of icons during this persecution. Saint Hilarion left behind spiritual works containing moral directives for spiritual effort. Saint Joseph of Volokolamsk (September 9 and October 18) was well acquainted with the work of Saint Hilarion, and he also wrote about the significance of monastic struggles in his own theological works. According to some sources, he was a nephew of St. Ioane, the founder and first abbot of the Iveron Monastery. Giorgi was elevated to the rank of abbot after St. Ekvtime left the monastery to travel to Jerusalem. Under his leadership, the main church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos was constructed. An inscription on the wall of the church reads: “I established these columns and they will not be shaken unto the ages. Monk Giorgi the Georgian, Builder.” For most of his life Abbot Giorgi was highly respected and even revered in the imperial court of Byzantium, but he was eventually slandered, accused of treason, and exiled to the island ofMonovatia, where he reposed in the year 1029. Fathers slain at Sinai and Raithu Commemorated on January 14/27 The Holy Monastic Fathers Slain at Sinai and Raithu. There were two occasions when the monks and hermits were murdered by the barbarians. The first took place in the fourth century when forty Fathers were killed at Mt. Sinai, and thirty-nine were slain at Raithu on the same day. Mount Sinai, where the Ten Commandments had been given to Moses, was also the site of another miracle. Ammonios, an Egyptian monk, witnessed the murder of the forty holy Fathers at Sinai. He tells of how the Saracens attacked the monastery and would have killed them all, if God had not intervened. A fire appeared on the summit of the peak, and the whole mountain smoked. The barbarians were terrified, and fled, while the surviving monks thanked God for sparing them. That day, the Blemmyes (an Arab tribe) killed thirty-nine Fathers at Raithu (on the shores of the Red Sea). Igumen Paul of Raithu exhorted his monks to endure their suffering with courage and a pure heart. The second massacres occurred nearly a hundred years later, and was also recorded by an eyewitness who miraculously escaped: Saint Nilus the Faster (November 12). The Arabs permitted some of the monks run for their lives. They crossed the valley and climbed up a mountain. From this vantage point, they saw the bedouin kill the monks and ransack their cells. The Sinai and Raithu ascetics lived a particularly strict life: they spent the whole week at prayer in their cells. On Saturday they gathered for the all-night Vigil, and on Sunday they received the Holy Mysteries. Their only food was dates and water. Many of the ascetics of the desert were glorified by the gift of wonderworking: the Elders Moses, Joseph and others. Mentioned in the service to these monastic Fathers are: Isaiah, Sava, Moses and his disciple Moses, Jeremiah, Paul, Adam, Sergius, Domnus, Proclus, Hypatius, Isaac, Macarius, Mark, Benjamin, Eusebius and Elias.
